THE TEAMS England XI: Johnstone, Colwill, Tomori, Dunk, Alexander-Arnold, Gallagher, Henderson, Maddison, Grealish, Watkins, Bowen. Subs: Ramsdale, Pickford, Trippier, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Guehi, Rice, Phillips, Bellingham, Rashford, Foden, Nketiah, Kane. Australia XI: Ryan, Burgess, Souttar, Rowles, Strain, Irvine, Baccus, Goodwin, Boyle, Duke, Metcalfe. We've got opportunities for players to play tonight, we have to find out about a few." On Levi Colwill: "Very good. For a very young defender, there are not many young defenders playing at centre=back in the league. He has been playing at left back at Chelsea too and he is comfortable doing both." On giving fringe players a chance: "We need to keep players engaged. We have quite a few players at the back who haven't got many caps. This is a great chance for them at a full house at Wembley." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/13/098b88e1-fdeb-408d-b4cd-30879a4a5958.jpgAustralia manager Graham Arnold has been talking to our colleagues on BBC World Service's Sportsworld.Despite the Socceroos reaching the last 16 at a World Cup for just the second time last year, Arnold doesn’t think the team's successes will lead to change. "Politicians invest hugely in stadiums, with training facilities with all that," he's told Sportsworld’s Mani Djazmi. "Yet with us with football, especially on the Socceroos side, we don't have anything. We have to train at the Rugby League Oval." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/3887/production/_131417441_gettyimages-1733754621.jpgOllie Watkins

Watching Eng vs Aus
20 mins in and despite England dominating possession it's Australia who have created and had the best scoring opportunities.
It feels like a contest between the modern day tippy tappy game (Eng) and old fashion harassing and hard work (Aus). From an entertainment point of view the latter is miles ahead.
I suspect England will gradually grind them down.

I tend to not watch friendly matches, (not fair on the missus) maybe dip in and out, during adverts or the like, Italy on tuesday though will be 100% viewing the whole match.

You're not missing much and the first team vs Italy should be a huge improvement on this, you'd hope.

FT: 1-0 England.
Australia very unlucky and England very crap.
Has to be up there as one of the most boring England games I've watched and trust me, that bar is set sky-high for snooze-fests.

Agree, i watched the final 25 mins, very tip tap, regimented, rigid, devoid of entertainment for those 80k+ fans that went tonight... I thought friendlies were to try something different without anything at stake, running past players and crossing the ball in, wow there's something... Gary Lineker says often that football of course never existed pre 1992, was the football better then, maybe i am just getting old... Football these days seems to be very stagnant and staid..oh well, i think i will put on a dvd of the 1977 FA Cup final for some good old entertainment...

FRIDAY 13th OCTOBER 2023 - INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY - AT WEMBLEY STADIUM
ENGLAND 1 (Watkins 57) Australia 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EF77/production/_131430316_olliewatkins_reuters.png Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins scored his third goal for England in his eighth international appearanceOllie Watkins marked his return to the England side with the winner as Gareth Southgate's side overcame Australia in a friendly at Wembley. Aston Villa striker Watkins turned in Jack Grealish's shot from almost on the goalline just before the hour in one of the few positive moments in a largely undistinguished England display. Watkins made amends for hitting the post with a good chance in the first half as Australia paid the price for not taking advantage of several opportunities before the break. In a game which saw Stephanie Frappart become the first female referee to take charge of a men's international at Wembley, England were fortunate not to be behind at half-time. Sam Johnstone, given his chance in goal, saved well from Keanu Baccus while Mitchell Duke volleyed inches wide and Lewis Dunk cleared off the line from Ryan Strain. Australia also wasted a good chance to level late on when Connor Metcalfe hit the post with a header as England secured a morale-boosting win before Tuesday's Euro 2024 qualifier with Italy at Wembley. There was one contentious moment amid a very subdued atmosphere when the name of Jordan Henderson, England's captain for the night with Harry Kane left on the bench, was jeered as Southgate's substitutions were announced to the crowd after 62 minutes. Henderson's decision to pursue his career with Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League after leaving Liverpool has attracted criticism and it was clear many among the Wembley gallery wanted to make their feelings known as he walked off. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15633/production/_131430678_gettyimages-1723100588.jpgJordan Henderson was booed by some supporters inside Wembley when he was substituted in the second half of England's friendly win over AustraliaThis was a low-key affair from start to finish, although Watkins will be delighted to get back on the mark for England with the simplest of finishes to settle this game. It was an important moment for the 27-year-old - who has just been handed a new five-year contract at Villa as reward for his outstanding early season form - because he had endured a frustrating night up to that point. Watkins may consider himself unlucky to hit the post with an angled first half effort but he should have scored after rounding Australia keeper Mathew Ryan. What is never in doubt with Watkins is his effort and application. There was no let-up in his work ethic and he was on the spot to take the simple chance for his goal after 57 minutes. Crystal Palace keeper Johnstone had a very steady night in in goal, including that good save from Baccus while Dunk also made his mark with that vital clearance off the line from Strain. Elsewhere, England did not flow and often looked like strangers, perhaps understandable as Southgate fielded an experimental line-up before the crucial Wembley date with Italy, giving first caps to Chelsea's Levi Colwill in his starting line-up then Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah as a late substitute. None of England's shadow squad let themselves down but nor did anyone give Southgate pause for thought as he weighs up his future options. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/73A3/production/_131430692_olliewatkins.jpgDunk, Watkins and Colwill

TUESDAY 17th OCTOBER 2023 - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - QUALIFYING GROUP C - AT WEMBLEY STADIUMichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/16E6D/production/_131450839_wembley.jpgKyle Walker is hoping England can get "payback" against European champions Italy in Tuesday's Euro 2024 qualifier. It will be Italy's first match against England at Wembley since beating them there in the final of Euro 2020. A point would secure top spot in Group C and a place in next summer's finals for Gareth Southgate's side, while Italy's qualification hopes would remain in the balance. Recalling the Euro 2020 final, Walker said: "We fell short that night." He added: "Hopefully we can get a little bit of payback." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10350/production/_131448366_gettyimages-1328227344.jpgEngland missed three of their five penalties in the final as Italy won Euro 2020England boss Gareth Southgate said his current team are a different side to the one that lost the Euro 2020 final. "[We have] experience of winning big matches, consistent performances. We've been ranked in the top five in the world since 2018. I don't think there has been any other period over the past 30 or 40 years where that's been the case," Southgate said. Luciano Spalletti's Italy are second in Group C and level on points with Ukraine, on whom they have a game in hand, and who they play in their final qualifier on 20 November. Southgate said England will not be reckless in search of victory. "If it's the 87th minute and we're level, we don't need to lob the goalkeeper into the box," he said. Walker added: "It's about putting a performance on and going out there and winning, but I won't be ashamed if it's 0-0 and we're in the Euros and I'm going to represent my country in the finals." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/F93D/production/_131450836_philfoden.jpg

Sometimes we are just expected to go to the big tournaments but we have seen in the past it is not as easy as it looks. "We went 1-0 behind and stayed calm. We knew we coiuld get the winner and we have done it." Love scoring at Wembley? "I do! It is our home. We have made it a real fortress over the years. We want to repay our fans with victories and we have done that today." On his second goal: "I showed a bit of pace which is not normally my strength. To qualify with two games to go, credit to everyone involved." England captain Harry Kane speaking to Radio 5 Live: "I feel like sometimes we make qualifying look easy, so credit to the boys because it's not. We've had one of the toughest groups, you've seen over recent years some big nations not going to major tournaments, so to do it [qualify] with two games to spare just shows the path we are on. "We can enjoy it, it was a really good performance from everyone, even when we went one nil down there was no panic. We stayed calm and carried on doing what we have done the whole campaign and obviously got the rewards in the second half. On surpassing Bobby Charlton's record of goals scored at Wembley for England: "I love playing here at Wembley. I love playing for England full stop. To do it here at home is always special, perform in front of our fans, to wear the badge, to lead the boys out, and of course to score as well is one of the best feelings ever. "I enjoy the records but we go onto the next one and see how far we can go. This group wants to keep pushing standards. Now we will have to see how far we go next summer. On winning home and away v Italy: "We've beaten big nations quite consistently over the last few years. To win in Italy is one thing, but to back it up here too, with the performance, 3-1, comfortable for us, I think we showed a real maturity out there. "We won't get carried away. Enjoy the next camp, two more games to work together. Then these tournaments come around quick. Before we know it we'll be in March and on the eve of the next tournament." England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to Channel 4: "So hungry, so eager to learn, so together. And you saw that in the performance tonight. We said before that mentality was the main thing. The performance was relentless tonight. "What was really pleasing was that when we went behind we stayed calm and used the ball calmly from the back. In other big games we have lost the ball too easily. Our forwards worked so hard. When your front players play like that it is a great thing for the team. "There were times in the first half we were passive near our own goal. The biggest difference in the last couple of years is that we have more legs and physicality in midfield. You need to be outstanding without the ball against world class teams. "They [our forwards] are all different and bring different qualities. We have dribblers, speed in behind and players who can come short. But you always need the work ethic. In the biggest games you can't carry players and that really pleased me in the performance. "Ideally, we would have everyone playing regularly, but you can see Kalvin [Phillips] and Harry [Maguire] were both outstanding tonight. They are both important for us. They are up against really good players at their clubs. Kalvin has Rodri and Kovacic to compete with. But every time Kalvin plays for us he does a good job. "We need to make sure we are one of the top seeds next month. We need to win our next two games. We want to be in control of that. We need to keep building. There is more to come from this team. This was the toughest qualifying group, with the seedings. People have criticised us for not beating the top teams enough. But we have performed really well."

Harry Maguire says 'proper England fans don't boo players' after Jordan Henderson jeers..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/284C/production/_131461301_gettyimages-1730502775.jpg Jordan Henderson has won 80 caps for EnglandEngland defender Harry Maguire says supporters who booed midfielder Jordan Henderson "aren't England fans". Henderson was booed when he was substituted in Friday's 1-0 friendly win over Australia and when he came on in the 3-1 Euro 2024 qualifying victory against Italy on Tuesday. Former Liverpool captain Henderson was criticised for joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq this summer. "Proper England fans don't boo players," said Maguire. "Don't boo players who dedicate their life to play and do everything they can to make this country have good memories and have special moments for them and their families." Henderson was a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community during his time at Liverpool, but was criticised by some fans and LGBTQ+ campaigners for moving to Saudi Arabia, where same-sex sexual activity is illegal. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/18390/production/_131461299_gettyimages-1730501667.jpgEngland manager Gareth Southgate said after the Australia game that "it defies logic" that fans booed captain Henderson, who said he must take criticism "on the chin". Henderson received a slightly warmer reception when he came off the bench in the 70th minute against Italy. "You heard when he came on the cheers and a few jeers, but they aren't England fans," said Maguire. Maguire has been booed by Manchester United and England supporters over the past year. Last month Southgate said criticism of Maguire was "a joke", and his mother Zoe described the abuse he has received as "disgraceful".

The Three Lions secured their place at Euro 2024 with two games to spare after beating Italy 3-1 in London in October. Gareth Southgate's squad will come up against two nations also featured in the top five of Fifa's world rankings. "I'm happy to have two strong matches in March as we build towards the Euro finals," manager Southgate said. "It is important we take every opportunity to test ourselves against top opposition." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/177D5/production/_131631269_gettyimages-1730507392.jpgEngland, runners-up at Euro 2020, will host five-time World Cup winners Brazil on 23rd March before welcoming Belgium on 26th March. Brazil's most recent visit to Wembley ended in a goalless draw in November 2017, while England beat Belgium 2-1 in a Nations League fixture there in October 2020. Southgate's unbeaten side have taken five wins from six games in qualifying so far and will complete their campaign during November's international break, hosting Malta at Wembley on 17th November before traveling to North Macedonia on 20th November. "Getting two positive results is essential if we are to make sure of being top seeds in the Euro draw next month," said Southgate. "We can't afford to think the job is done as there is still work to do. Every second for us together in camp counts if we are to give ourselves the best chance of success next summer."

England squad: Newcastle striker Callum Wilson recalled for Euro 2024 qualifiers..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/126C9/production/_131656457_mediaitem131656455.jpg Callum Wilson was called up to the England senior team for the first time in November 2018Wilson, 31, has scored seven Premier League goals this season, but sustained a hamstring injury as Newcastle lost at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. Tottenham midfielder James Maddison and Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka are also in despite injury worries. England play Malta on 17th November and North Macedonia on 20th November. Southgate's side have already qualified for the tournament in Germany next June and July after a 3-1 win against Italy in October. Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling is left out of a fifth successive squad. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins retains his place after his first inclusion since March 2022 for the October international matches, while Jordan Henderson, who joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq from Liverpool in July, also keeps his spot. Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah and Manchester City defender John Stones are both out injured. Southgate said during his news conference on Thursday the door was "100% open" for 28-year-old Sterling and other players who have not been chosen. "We don't need to know about his quality, his personality. He is a crucial part of why we've had the journey we've had over the last few years," said the England boss. "I can only repeat what I have said in the meetings, we're playing exceptionally well and who can I leave out?" Southgate also said Chelsea right-back Reece James asked to be left out of the squad as he did not feel "quite ready", having only recently returned to action after a hamstring issue. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/08A8/production/_131661220_callumwilson1-1.jpgEngland squadGoalkeepers: Sam Johnstone, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale Defenders: Levi Colwill, Lewis Dunk, Marc Guehi, Harry Maguire, Fikayo Tomori, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker Midfielders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jude Bellingham, Conor Gallagher, Jordan Henderson, Kalvin Phillips, Declan Rice Forwards: Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, James Maddison, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins, Callum Wilson

Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill latest players to withdraw from England squad
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9EF3/production/_131719604_gettyimages-1742959350.jpg Jude Bellingham missed Real Madrid's La Liga victory over Valencia on Saturday
Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill have withdrawn from the England squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. Both Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham and Chelsea defender Colwill have shoulder injuries. Five players have now pulled out of Gareth Southgate's initial squad for the games on 17th and 20th November. On Monday, Cole Palmer, Ezri Konsa and Rico Lewis replaced the injured James Maddison, Callum Wilson and Lewis Dunk. Meanwhile, Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips will meet up with the squad later this week for personal reasons. Manager Southgate will not add to the squad for Malta's visit to Wembley on Friday and the trip to North Macedonia on Monday. England have already qualified for next summer's European Championship and one more win will assure them of top spot in Group C and being one of the top seeds in Germany. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/183A/production/_131720260_judebellingham.jpg

"At the start of the game, we missed the right tempo. We were sloppy and we couldn't quite build. "In the second half we had more control and created chances. But overall, it's a 2-0 win." On his yellow card for diving: "I was surprised it didn't get overturned but the referee has made his decision. "Sometimes the VAR doesn't want to interfere too much but it is what it is. That's football and it's part of the game. "I am just focused on the fact we won and hopefully, that secures us as top seed for next summer." On preparing for Euro 2024 and the depth in England's squad: "I think we are playing a lot of games at the moment. We have some injuries as well and the players coming in have to perform. "All the players today who started weren't at their usual standard but that's football. We maybe felt mental fatigue a little bit. "We are top of the group and we have one game and hopefully, we finish it with a win." On wearing number nine and scoring on the night Wembley said farewell to Sir Bobby Charlton: "Sir Bobby was one of England's best-ever players and the tribute was fantastic. "He will be missed throughout the whole country. We wanted to win because of that and I was desperate to score because of that. "To say goodbye and win the match at Wembley is a nice thing to do." England manager Gareth Southgate speaking to Channel 4: "It was a game when we didn't start well and if you don't start well it's hard to pick the game up. "e got a goal out of nothing really. "But the quality on the ball is not normally at that level and it was a game where the players knew they could win at a canter and didn't extend themselves. "These players have played so many games and have done so well for us so I am not going to hammer them for it. We weren't where we [should be] but we got the win." On Trent Alexander-Arnold: "He has got outstanding quality. He and Phil [Foden] were the two in the first half that looked like opening the game up for us. "Marc Guehi was good at the back and the changes brought more quality. They don't lose by fives and sixes and obviously, we didn't create as many chances as we'd like to." England manager Gareth Southgate speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "If you don't start games well it's very difficult to pick it up and we didn't. We know the level we've got should be better, can be better. "Those games that you know you can win at a canter, the number of games these players are playing, it's almost a self-regulation. "We didn't hit the heights that we have done this calendar year. "So not enough quality on the ball, and not enough chances created but I have been a player and I know exactly how those games feel and clearly it's possible we could have had three or four with the decisions as well but we didn't create enough clear chances to deserve that anyway." Should fans be concerned? "We've asked people to fill roles that aren't their usual position, like Fikayo, and it's not easy for him to build down that side. "We've got problems with availability in that area of the pitch and you are trying to give some players a rest. We have a lot of players that weren't in there tonight. "I thought Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Phil [Foden] and Marc Guehi were good and Cole Palmer coming on for his debut had a good impact. There are positives but we know we were not where we want to be and can be." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/17/d0c75397-70a5-45ae-a542-2eb3b4381400.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B383/production/_131755954_programme.pngichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17499/production/_131758359_tribute.jpgFA chair Debbie Hewitt placed a floral tribute on the pitch before the match, with Sir Geoff Hurst placing Sir Bobby Charlton's number nine England shirt next to it..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4001/production/_131758361_tribute.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8E21/production/_131758363_applause.jpg
