Ivan Toney: Brentford striker charged by FA with further 30 breaches of betting rules..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11696/production/_128081317_gettyimages-1440963119.jpgBrentford striker Ivan Toney has been charged by the Football Association with a further 30 alleged breaches of betting rules. Last month he was charged with 232 alleged breaches of betting rules. Toney, 26, has scored 10 Premier League goals this season but missed out on a place in the England World Cup squad. Brentford previously said: "The club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives. Those conversations will continue privately." The club's statement continued: "We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed." Toney has until Wednesday, 4 January to respond to the new FA misconduct charges, involving alleged breaches of FA rule E8, which bans players from betting on games, or sharing privileged information for the purposes of betting. He faces a lengthy ban if they are proven. England defender Kieran Trippier was banned for 10 weeks by the FA in December 2020 for giving out information for others to bet on his transfer from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid. In 2017, Joey Barton - then a Burnley player - was banned for 18 months, reduced to 13 on appeal, after he admitted placing 1,260 football-related bets over a 10-year period. Toney said earlier this month, after the allegations were first reported, that he was "assisting the Football Association with their enquiries". You just can't educate pork as they say or too much money than sense... Ivan Toney banned: Brentford striker suspended for eight months over betting..Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been banned from football for eight months after he accepted breaking Football Association betting rules. Toney has also been charged £50,000 and warned about his future conduct for 232 breaches of the FA's betting rules. His suspension starts immediately, but the 27-year-old can return to training with Brentford four months before it ends on 17th September. He will not be allowed to play again until 17th January, 2024. In a statement, the FA said: "His [Toney] sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission following a personal hearing. "The independent Regulatory Commission's written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and the FA will wait to review them before commenting further." The breaches Toney has been found guilty of took place between 25th February 2017 and 23rd January 2021, during which time Toney represented Scunthorpe United, Wigan Athletic, Peterborough United and Brentford. Toney has scored 20 goals in 33 Premier League appearances this season, helping Brentford into ninth place in the table. He will miss Brentford's trip to Tottenham on Saturday and the final day of the season at home to league leaders Manchester City on 28th May. Brentford say they note the FA's decision and are awaiting the publication of the written reasons before "considering our next steps". ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/136F6/production/_129760697_gettyimages-1252899584.jpg

Crystal Palace's uncapped midfielder Eberechi Eze has been named in Gareth Southgate's squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, Brighton centre-half Lewis Dunk, Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings and Newcastle striker Callum Wilson are also named.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/5/24/1106f29f-02a9-4145-b608-117ab70adb7c.pngEngland manager Gareth Southgate speaking at his news conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "It (the short time between the season's end and the qualifiers) hasn't influenced selections at all. It is a difficult season for clubs, the players and us. "We are always mindful of the welfare of the players and we have to allow players time to recuperate but not to de-condition physically. "Like every other country we have important qualification matches on our way to Germany. "We have picked a strong squad and the players always enjoy coming here. I think we will manage it as well as we can." England manager Gareth Southgate speaking about Eberechi Eze at his press conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "We've liked him for a long time. He was very unfortunate just before the Euros. We were going to call him into a prep camp and he got an injury. "He has finished the season very strongly, he can play in a couple of positions across that front line. He has high quality and bursts of speed to go past players with those dribbling skills." England manager Gareth Southgate was asked at his news conference about the racial abuse suffered by Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr during Real's recent 1-0 loss against Valencia. "I think we could debate about walking off [the pitch] or not. It's a disgusting situation. I think it's so bad that actually it is going to force change. It has taken a central story, not only in Europe but around the world, and it will force change. "It is another example of what we are dealing with and another example of people burying their heads in the sand. "We've been in a similar situation and I think [Real Madrid manager] Carlo Ancelotti dealt with it really well. "There is a lot to take from it, it looks as though action has taken. Hopefully it is a story that doesn't just disappear in 24-48 hours without anything being done." England manager Gareth Southgate speaking about Brighton defender Lewis Dunk and Aston Villa central defender Tyrone Mings at his news conference after announcing his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers: "Yeah absolutely (it was too hard to ignore them). Both clubs (Brighton and Aston Villa) have been excellent. Unai Emery has done a brilliant job at Aston Villa, and the same with [Roberto de Zerbi at] Brighton. Brighton have been exceptional and Lewis Dunk and Levi Colwill have been a big part of that. "(Dunk has) shown great composure with the ball. He is asked to defend very often in one-v-one situations and he thoroughly deserves his call." Dunk's determination pays offichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/5/24/b46bbbf6-d472-450e-aa4c-d28f074e5f23.png15th November 2018: Lewis Dunk makes his England debut in a friendly against USA at Wembley, his only international appearance to date. 24th May 2023: After leading Brighton to European football for the first time in their history, Dunk returns to the England set-up for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

Euro 2024: Injured Lewis Dunk and Jude Bellingham out of England qualifiers..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/131E2/production/_130060387_gettyimages-1064036928.jpg Lewis Dunk's only England cap came in a friendly against the USA in 2018
Brighton defender Lewis Dunk has withdrawn from the England squad for the forthcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers, while midfielder Jude Bellingham will not feature in the games. Dunk, 31, has not joined up with Gareth Southgate's squad at St George's Park because he is injured. Bellingham, 19, is still nursing the injury that kept him out of Borussia Dortmund's final game of the season. However, he will continue his rehabilitation with the England squad. Bellingham is expected to join Real Madrid this summer after the Spanish club agreed a 103m euro (£88.5m) deal with Dortmund for the teenager. The rest of the 25-man squad started to report to St George's Park on Sunday, although West Ham midfielder Declan Rice and the Manchester City contingent - Jack Grealish, John Stones, Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips - are due to arrive in the coming days following their respective European finals. England travel to play Malta on Friday before hosting North Macedonia at Old Trafford on Monday. Dunk's only previous cap came against the USA in 2018, but he was recalled to the squad after helping Brighton qualify for Europe for the first time in the club's history last season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/10244/production/_130061166_bbc-sport-index-imagery-2-split-images-gradient-3811b466-9478-4f4f-9318-0d93dc580afd.png

The Brentford striker was banned for eight months in May after admitting to 232 breaches of FA betting rules. He was charged in November and missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for the 2022 World Cup. "Support is good, but how I am, I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me," he told the Kick Game YouTube channel. "Even though I miss eight months of football, that was the biggest punishment, to miss out on a World Cup - everyone's dream - it is bigger than missing eight months of football." Toney won his first England cap as a late substitute in the 2-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Ukraine in March, having received his first call-up to Southgate's squad last September. The 27-year-old, who was given a reduced ban because of a diagnosed gambling addiction, will not be allowed to play again until 17th January 2024. He can return to training with Brentford on 17th September, four months before the ban ends. "I done what I done before, the punishment is the punishment and get on with it," Toney said. "I just have to focus on when I come back training. I want to be a different animal when I come back. It's going to be frightening." Toney was the Premier League's third highest scorer last season with 20 goals and helped Brentford to a ninth-place finish. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/6/12/16497dc7-0fce-4d06-8b8f-958654b14e53.jpg

Ivan Toney on gambling sponsorshipichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/6/12/9c5eb3d8-9b20-496c-9dba-7616b5d8c1cb.jpgBrentford striker Ivan Toney, who has been diagnosed with a gambling addiction, agreed there were "double standards" in football around widespread sponsorship from betting companies. "The fact is, the majority of football teams now are sponsored by gambling companies," said Toney, who is serving an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.. Asked if the sport should be doing more to address its relationship with gambling, he told the Kick Game YouTube channel: "Of course, I feel that it should. "People out there are painting a certain picture of me, fair enough, but people that know me know who I am and what I'm about. The majority of football teams now are sponsored by gambling companies, so weigh it up. "If the rules are not to bet, you shouldn't be betting, but for people that need help there should be more around them to stop them going in that direction. "When the time is right, I'll speak out on the majority of things and clear a few things up that need to be cleared. That is not now, unfortunately." Leak was 'spiteful' - Toney
Ivan Toney believes the Football Association's investigation into his gambling breaches was made public in a "spiteful" way. News of the investigation into Toney's historical betting surfaced on the eve of Gareth Southgate naming his England squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. "People try to break people down," the 27-year-old Brentford striker said. "How it come out, just before the England camp, obviously missing out on the World Cup…In a way, it was kind of like: 'get out now so you don't go [away with] England'. "And then all of a sudden they want to wait until the end of the season...But it is what it is. They wanted to do it that way. I call it a bit spiteful. You just have to get on with it."

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold - who started in central midfield - scored a fine 25-yard strike between an own goal, and two penalties from Harry Kane and Callum Wilson. Gareth Southgate's side had little trouble dispatching the side 172nd in the Fifa rankings. The Three Lions are next in action against North Macedonia on Monday. Their qualifying campaign to reach Germany next summer is going to plan with nine points from three games - six ahead of Ukraine, North Macedonia and reigning champions Italy. The three points at Ta'Qali National Stadium were sealed inside the first 31 minutes as Ferdinando Apap turned past his own goalkeeper before Alexander-Arnold's impressive strike. Just 96 seconds after Alexander-Arnold's goal, Kane made it 3-0 from the penalty spot after being fouled by Matthew Guillaumier. It was his 50th competitive England goal, and means he has now scored in 11 straight Euro qualifiers. Kane was replaced in the second half, allowing Wilson the chance to score from the spot when his cross was handled by Malta captain Steve Borg and a penalty was awarded by VAR. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/204F/production/_130117280_microsoftteams-image-4.png

Bale or no Bale seems to make no difference 😂Interesting lis. Im sure blue tornado was only talking about England so wasn’t that interested about Wales. But I was interested and noted what Robert Page said about Wales ‘getting a slap they needed’. Robert Page really should choose his language a bit more carefully imo. Not sure anyone ever needs a slap. I seem to remember when he was manager of Northampton and he came here in January ‘17 and we were 4-0 up at half time all scored by Ellis. We won eventually, I think it was still 4-0 and beat Swindon the next week. Almost the high-water mark of DCs time with us with us on the edge of the play offs. But Page said something derogatory about his team ‘playing like a women’s team’ which in todays politically correct times did not go down too well. It got a lot of publicity at the time and he was sacked by Northampton 3 days later I think. I always thought it strange he got the Wales job but he seemed to have kept his cool despite some poor recent performances. (1 win on last 11/12 games or thereabouts) He’ll need to get a reaction on Monday v Turkey or he could be under more pressure. Sorry bt if I’ve changed the content of an England thread. 🤔 UTG!

It was but in jest, but your point about Page is right, moreso in this day and age of sensitivity/ mental pressure and the like, he is walking the edge currently and as you say if the next outing doesn't give him a favourable outcome then the impression is that he will be out the door. Turkey are no push over when it comes to teams of or around their own ability.,and are no strangers to pulling off a big upset at times

MONDAY 19th JUN 2023 - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - QUALIFYING GROUP C
England v North Macedonia - 7.45pm - Venue: Old Traffordichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8E6E/production/_130126463_gettyimages-1499434853.jpgEngland manager Gareth Southgate joked his players will be "tapping up" team-mates while on international duty but says the focus remains on facing North Macedonia at Old Trafford on Monday. The transfer window is open and several members of the squad are being linked with high-profile moves this summer. "I haven't felt the need to say anything," laughed Southgate. "The players are tapping each other up anyway on the quiet so I can't do anything about that!" West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is a long-term target of Arsenal, while there is speculation around Leicester City's James Maddison after the Foxes' relegation from the Premier League. England captain Harry Kane's future is also being talked about as he enters the last year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur. "What I have said is these things run their course, they happen in their own time, you can't force it as a player. Don't get frustrated, don't be asking all summer," added Southgate. "You don't need to be updated on every call that happens. A lot of negotiation goes on. "I remember as a player getting too wrapped up in every detail of that. In the end, there is only a small amount that you can actually control. "I think all of those things will happen later on in the summer and I think the players understand that." England are top of European Championship qualifying Group C on maximum points after three games as they look to reach the tournament in Germany next summer. "They know the focus for the next 36 hours is this game," said Southgate. "Finishing the season well, making sure we're set on 12 points. "We will be in a very healthy position if we do that." Luke Shaw is one player who has been joking with his team-mates about their futures, posting pictures on Instagram with Rice and Kane on a 'Carrington tour' of Manchester United's training ground, where the England team are preparing for the home match against North Macedonia. Chelsea's Mason Mount is also linked with a move to Manchester United and the Blues have had a £40m offer rejected. "Obviously, he is not here but I think it is all just a bit of banter really," Shaw said. "We have a joke and a laugh about it. (I'm) not too sure what goes on behind the scenes. "It is to do with the club really but of course when we are here we are always together and we have a joke about it."

Report By Phil McNulty, Chief football writer at Old Trafford.Bukayo Saka scored the first hat-trick of his career as England made it four wins out of four Euro 2024 qualifiers by thrashing North Macedonia at Old Trafford. Gareth Southgate's side are well on course to qualify for the tournament in Germany next summer and, even though North Macedonia provided meagre opposition, England still demonstrated the dazzling array of attacking options they have at their disposal. And at the heart of it all was Arsenal's Saka who struck a superb treble before departing to a standing ovation with the game won. England actually laboured in the early stages in the face of determined Macedonian defence but once captain Harry Kane scored his 57th international goal - turning in Luke Shaw's cross at the far post after 29 minutes - the floodgates opened. Saka added the second from Kyle Walker's pass nine minutes later and Marcus Rashford scored a third on the stroke of half-time after unselfish work by Jordan Henderson. The highlight of this one-sided affair came two minutes after half-time when Saka controlled a perfect long pass by Trent Alexander-Arnold before sending a thunderous left-foot finish high past keeper Stole Dimitrievski. Saka completed his landmark hat-trick after racing clear on to Kane's pass, prompting Southgate to make a host of changes which allowed substitute Kalvin Phillips to get in the act with a simple tap-in to make it six. Kane scored his second from the spot with 17 minutes left after John Stones had been fouled as England went on a goal rampage to record their biggest win since the 10-0 victory over San Marino in November 2021, and inflict North Macedonia's heaviest defeat. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/154FE/production/_130149278_gettyimages-1499841681.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D092/production/_130149335_gettyimages-1499846925.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/32A4/production/_130146921_gettyimages-1258830871.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/D7FE/production/_130149255_sun.png

Last time England reached a European Under-21 final was in 2009 when they lost to Germany.
Six of Germany’s squad went on to win the World Cup,
seven of England's went on to play for Sunderland.

James Trafford: From farm to the final, is this England's future number one ?
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/111AC/production/_130306007_whatsubject.jpg Burnley have agreed an initial £15m fee with Manchester City for James TraffordJames Trafford certainly did not lack confidence before England's European Under-21 Championship campaign began. That self-belief is unlikely to have dimmed since - he has helped the Young Lions reach the final without conceding a goal and is on the verge of becoming Burnley's record signing. The Premier League newcomers have agreed an initial £15m fee with Manchester City that could rise to £19m with add-ons, which is beyond what the Clarets paid for striker Chris Wood in 2017. It would also make Trafford the third-most expensive English goalkeeper ever, after Aaron Ramsdale and Jordan Pickford, and comes off the back of a successful spell on loan at Bolton in League One. Two years ago, he was on loan at Accrington Stanley, yet the 20-year-old has never doubted he will one day be his country's number one. "From the start of my men's career when I played at Accrington I told people I'd play for England, play for City," he told the Bolton News. "The people around me believe in me and I still completely believe I will." A starring role in England's run to a European final against Spain on Saturday has only added weight to the young stopper's claims. "I want to play at the highest level possible," he told BBC Sport in Georgia. "Bolton were brilliant for me and I was good for them. I've brought the form that I ended the season with here." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15FCC/production/_130306009_whatsubject.jpgJames Trafford spent last season on loan at Bolton in League One

SATURDAY 8th JULY 2023 - EURO UNDER-21 CHAMPIONSHIP - FINAL - Venue: Batumi Arena (Adjarabet Arena)
England U21 v Spain U21 - 5pm - Live on Channel 4ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5598/production/_130321912_gettyimages-1521652458.jpgEngland go into Saturday's final against Spain looking to win the European Under-21 Championship for the first time since 1984. This is England's first final since 2009, when they lost 4-0 to Germany. The Young Lions won the third and fourth editions of the tournament in 1982 and 1984, when they beat Spain 3-0 on aggregate, but never again. Lee Carsley's side have yet to concede a goal in this summer's tournament in Georgia and Romania. "These four weeks has felt the most like a club we've had it in terms of team spirit, the personalities that have developed," said Carsley. "It's a shame in that respect [that many of the team will be finished at U21 level afterwards]. One of the benefits is that there is another group waiting to come through. "I'd like to see this group finish off this campaign with winning it. They deserve it, work so hard and are so diligent. "We were ranked sixth so to get to the final... to get out of the group to start with was a good achievement. The team have got maybe two or three levels to go. If they click it'll be a hell of a performance. "The bigger the stage you'll see a different intensity to the team. I'm looking forward to it."

European U21 Championships: Lee Carsley urges England to take their chance in final..By Alex Howell, BBC Sport in Georgia.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12EC8/production/_130321577_gettyimages-1498384801.jpgLee Carsley has urged his England Under-21 side to take their chance at European Championship glory because his players "can't get this time back" after their final against Spain on Saturday. The match at Georgia's Batumi Arena marks the end of a two-year cycle for Carsley's side, with many of his players no longer eligible to play U21 football once the final whistle blows. "We've spoken about this literally being a moment in time and that it's going to pass quickly," said Carsley. "It's making the most of now and trying to encourage them that they can't get this time back. Whether we've done well or not, this time we've had now, we're not going to get it back. "It's about trying to remove the pressure and let them enjoy the experience. "I always think that if you give the players that feeling of responsibility and ownership, then they are more than likely to perform because they feel part of what we're trying to do." The Young Lions have been widely praised for the exciting football they have played during this tournament. England are also yet to concede a goal in the competition and the possibility of winning the trophy has started a discussion about how this could be one of the best generations of young players to come through the English pathway. "I think the fact that they've got this far in the tournament would suggest that," said Carsley. "It's three age groups coming together — the previous 21s, the 20s and some of the 19s. So creating a good atmosphere and dynamic within that squad and their personalities was important. "A lot of them are vying for the same position and have played against each other for a while now. So it's about getting that mix right." Carsley's own future has been a talking point heading into this tournament, with the 50-year-old on a rolling contract and ongoing speculation he could leave his role at the end of the Championships. "I don't see this as a beginning, middle or end," he said. "It was more important for me that the players had a really good experience - that was the biggest thing. "I don't see this as a step to somewhere else. I see this as making sure I can do a good job, and being as well prepared as I can be. I tried three or four years ago not to look too far ahead on what's next - I did as a player, massively, I was always constantly thinking about it. "I try to avoid that as a coach. I'm not looking at these players as a springboard - the opposite to that. The most important thing to me is they perform well in the final and show what they can do." If England do manage to beat Spain, it would be the first time the Young Lions have won this competition since 1984. "The team have got maybe two or three levels to go," said Carsley. "If they click it'll be a hell of a performance tomorrow. "The bigger the stage you'll see a different intensity to the team. I'm looking forward to it."
