England win a sometimes niggly final, with Spain doing the "latino" effect of having been shoti n almost every tackle made on them but the "who me" when commiting one, lost count of yellows and reds as the game came to a close, rather stupid !!

SATURDAY 8th JULY 2023 - EURO UNDER-21 CHAMPIONSHIP - FINAL

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C604/production/_130329605_england9.jpgEngland won the European Under-21 Championship for the first time in nearly 40 years after a dramatic last-minute penalty save by James Trafford ensured the Young Lions held on to beat Spain. Trafford, who is set to join Burnley from Manchester City in a deal that could be worth up to £19m, kept out Abel Ruiz's low spot-kick in the 99th minute after a lengthy VAR check. The 20-year-old then produced another brilliant stop on the follow-up before being mobbed by his team-mates. The winning goal came with virtually the last kick of the first half when a Cole Palmer free-kick deflected off team-mate Curtis Jones and wrong-footed goalkeeper Arnau Tenas to find the bottom corner. Spain, who had scored 13 goals in the tournament, had a Ruiz goal ruled out for offside after half-time, before Trafford's late heroics sealed England's victory. The win meant Lee Carsley's talented side are the third England team to win the competition after previously picking up the trophy in 1982 and 1984. They are also the first team to record six successive clean sheets in the tournament's history. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/157AE/production/_130328978_england5.jpgJames Trafford, who is on the brink of becoming the third-most expensive English goalkeeper ever, will rightly take the headlines for his heroic double save in the last minute of added time of the final. However, that moment just capped off what had already been a superb tournament, having been a standout player in this team from the very first game. Trafford has shown he is the very definition of a modern-day goalkeeper - comfortable with the ball at his feet, dominant when coming for crosses and making eye-catching saves when called upon. He also has immense self belief, telling people that he would one day play for England while he was on loan at Accrington Stanley. During this competition he has spoken about his desire to play at the highest level and he will now get the chance next season when he becomes a Premier League number one at Turf Moor. Match stats: Possession 35% - 65% - Shots 8-21 - On Target 6-4 - Corners 0-9 - Yellows 3-5 - Reds 1-1 - Referee: Espen Eskåsichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/174A0/production/_130329359_england11.jpg

Lee Carsley: England Under-21s manager set for talks with FA about future..By Alex Howell, BBC Sport in Georgia.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E635/production/_130333985_gettyimages-1515041306.jpg Lee Carsley was appointed England Under-21s manager in July 2021Lee Carsley is set for talks with the Football Association about his future after leading England Under-21s to European Championship success. The Young Lions won the tournament in Georgia for the first time in 39 years with a 1-0 victory over Spain. Manager Carsley was appointed in July 2021 and is believed to be undecided about whether to carry on in the role. The 49-year-old will meet FA technical director John McDermott once he returns from holiday to discuss his plans. Carsley is on a rolling one-year contract and is understood to have been approached by clubs during his tenure as under-21s manager. The former Everton midfielder, who won 40 caps for the Republic of Ireland, has been lauded for fostering a strong team ethos and attractive style of play in a side which did not concede a goal at this summer's tournament. However, Carsley's assistant Joleon Lescott is set to leave the England Under-21s set-up as he looks to pursue a career as a technical director.

Gareth Southgate's side are already well on their way to qualification for Euro 2024 with four wins from their opening four Group C games. Ukraine have played most of their recent 'home' games in other Polish cities and one in Slovakia. The Tarczynski Arena, which will host the game, holds 45,000 people.

England boss Gareth Southgate is expecting his side to come up against a passionate pro-Ukraine atmosphere when the two sides meet for a Euro 2024 qualifier at Poland's Tarczynski Arena.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F108/production/_131040716_england.jpg England face Ukraine in Poland on Saturday in a Euro 2024 qualifier before playing Scotland in a friendly in Glasgow on TuesdayUkraine have not played at home since Russia launched an invasion of the country in February 2022. They are expected to be backed by 40,000 fans in Wroclaw for Saturday's game. "We know there are thousands of Ukrainians here," Southgate said. England are top of Group C with 12 points from four matches and know another win will all but secure a place at next year's European Championship in Germany. "We are expecting a passionate crowd but we are here to win a football game, so for us it is about keeping our emotions in check and focusing on our job," added Southgate. The Three Lions beat Ukraine 2-0 at Wembley in March with goals from Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane. Ukraine are second in the group and Southgate said: "Football-wise it is just a difficult game for us. "They have players who have played in England and we know very well. We have to play our best to get the result we want." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/A2E8/production/_131040714_england.jpgFormer Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is in the England squad but has faced some criticism this week for defending his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. There have been reports he could face protests from some LGBTQ+ supporters in Wroclaw, but Southgate insisted that would have no impact on who he picks to face Ukraine on Saturday. "I don't pick the team based on external reaction," he added. "I think Jordan expressed himself this week that he'd be sad if that's how they felt. His feeling towards that community hasn't changed. "I think as a team... I am sure all of our fans are going to get behind the team when the game starts. "I understand some of the comments that have been, and I respect the comments that have been made. "But I think what's also been said is that they're going to get behind the team when we play, and I am sure they'll get behind Jordan when the game starts as well."

SAT 9th SEPT 2023 - EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP - QUALIFYING GROUP C - At the Tarczynski Arena, Poland
Ukraine 1 (Zinchenko 26) ENGLAND 1 (Walker 41)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E6B8/production/_131046095_gettyimages-1670055304.jpg Kyle Walker's first England goal came in his 77th game for his countryEngland's winning run in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign came to a halt as they were held to a draw by Ukraine in Wroclaw. Ukraine were backed by 40,000 fans in the Tarczynski Arena, giving the game the fervent feel of a home fixture despite the hosts being unable to play in their own country because of the war with Russia. The magnificently noisy backing in Poland turned to a deafening roar when Arsenal's Oleksandr Zinchenko put Ukraine ahead after 26 minutes, turning in a cross from Yukhym Konoplya. England had plenty of possession but lacked creativity and it needed a moment of brilliance from captain Harry Kane to set up the equaliser four minutes before half-time, dropping back almost to the halfway line before sending a magnificent raking pass to play in Kyle Walker for his first international goal on his 77th appearance. Gareth Southgate's side had the better of the second half, going close when Bukayo Saka's shot was turned on to the bar by the slightest touch from Ukraine keeper Georgiy Bushchan. England are still firmly on course to qualify from Group C for next summer's Euros in Germany, but this was a lacklustre performance. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/182F8/production/_131046099_gettyimages-1670161897.jpgUkraine have not been able to host a home game in their home country since November 2021 due to the war with Russia

So, the usual things that are expected of us with England, really. "But I think the first thing is we can't fiddle around with the team because we're playing a top-level side, who are going to be at full tilt and giving us a really high-level challenge. So, you can't overly experiment because that would be ridiculous." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/12/afd3fd87-49eb-4f7f-90fb-9c3711a38752.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/12/01bb3a95-eae2-4b22-999d-3a7cb0994735.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/12/35236575-a6b3-452c-b749-b975691d51d2.jpgEngland defender Conor Coady has backed the selection of "mainstay" Harry Maguire by boss Gareth Southgate. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/12/0fb647da-0601-4963-b1fe-cf1226ac4e0c.jpgFormer England footballer Chris Sutton praised defender Kyle Walker on the BBC's Monday Night Club: "I really enjoyed his goal at the weekend he was like a young kid, the unbridled joy. "The competition for places in that particular position on the pitch has been phenomenal. He actually seems to thrive with that competition. "He’s been versatile for Gareth as well when England play three at the back at times, he slotted in well. The Scots last triumphed in this fixture in 1999, but hopes of a 42nd win appeared ominously faint as Phil Foden's opener silenced the national stadium before the terrific Jude Bellingham was gifted a second three minutes later. A shaken Scotland eventually awoke the home crowd as Harry Maguire's lazy leg sent Andy Robertson's cross screeching beyond Aaron Ramsdale. However, England's classy play and intricate movement would pay once more as Harry Kane slotted home the visitors' third after a mesmeric Bellingham assist. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11680/production/_131069217_20855716.jpgAll the class and talent which took Bellingham to Real Madrid was made devastatingly clear in Glasgow. Scotland 1-3 England: Gareth Southgate condemns 'ridiculous' criticism of Harry Maguire..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1597/production/_131072550_harrymaguire.jpg Harry Maguire joined Manchester United for £80m from Leicester in August 2019England boss Gareth Southgate has condemned the "ridiculous treatment" of Harry Maguire, saying the criticism the defender has faced is "a joke". Maguire, 30, gained his 59th cap but scored an own goal in the 3-1 away friendly win over Scotland on Tuesday. He helped England reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020, but has struggled for first-team football at Manchester United. "I've never known a player treated the way he is," said Southgate. "He's been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful England team for decades - he's been an absolutely key part of that. "I've talked about the importance of our senior players, he's been crucial among that. "Every time he goes on the field, the resilience he shows is absolutely incredible. He's a top player and we're all with him and our fans were brilliant with him." Against Scotland, Maguire came on as a substitute at half-time and was mocked by the home fans before he scored a 67th-minute own goal. "From a Scotland fans' point of view I get it. I have absolutely no complaints with what they did," added Southgate. "But it's a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time. "It's a joke. Not by the Scottish fans but by our own commentators, pundits or whatever it is. They've created something that's beyond anything I have ever seen. "I think our fans recognised, 'OK there might be a bit of heat from our own supporters but we're not going to have others getting into him'." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D8E7/production/_131072555_harrymaguire.jpgHarry Maguire has played more minutes for England this season than he has for his club Manchester United

Former England winger Chris Waddle, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, picked out a host of star performers for the Three Lions against Scotland: "Kyle Walker, outstanding, Dunk, outstanding. Foden played really well. Phillips was excellent in midfield alongside Rice, the two of them, one touch football, the awareness, the vision when they spotted danger and intercepted it. Rashford, first half, caused a lot of problems down the left-hand side. "Harry Kane, people were moaning about Harry Kane dropping into midfield, I think it's brilliant. As a centre-half you’d think 'what do I do, do I go in?' and he’s got the pace [around him]. Foden can run in behind, Rashford can run in behind. Tactically it's very difficult to defend [against]. Harry Kane’s got a very, very intelligent football brain. He’s a very clever player." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/13/ca647a87-1c46-4f9d-860b-990a80af066d.jpgMore from Waddle - speaking on the Football Daily podcast on BBC Sounds - on Jude Bellingham's stand-out performance: "If you put a shirt on him, you’re going to put a 10 on him, won’t you? It's what he is, he’s a playmaker. He can score goals, he can make goals and that’s what you want. "You want him in the other half, you don’t want him to come back defensively. He’s played unbelievable in the Bundesliga, now he’s gone to Spain, he’s come out the blocks flying. "This guy’s got so much talent, he’s just got to maintain it. He’s going to have a dip, his age will prove that. It’s how he comes back." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/13/5897f185-1984-4a5e-a1d2-299246d206ca.jpg

Has moments where he’s not concentrating and does silly things, but when he goes for the throat he’s like a force of nature. Jordan: Bellingham for Ballon D’Or ? Graham: Get the England team built around Bellingham. It's a no-brainer. Richard: Bellingham reminded me of Zidane last night, his presence and skills were just on another planet. Nick: The phrase ‘world class’ is thrown around so much these days but Bellingham shocks me every time with just how good he is. Ed: Can everyone just calm down. England beat Scotland in a FRIENDLY, yet couldn't beat Ukraine in a meaningful game. You'd think by the comments and reports that England had beaten a World XI. David: Bellingham has the smooth pedigree of Bobby Charlton, the driving force of Bryan Robson and the vision and skill of Paul Gascoigne all rolled into one. Good luck anyone playing against him! Lee: How we all laughed and scoffed, when Birmingham retired Bellingham's shirt number.

Bukayo Saka: Arsenal forward ruled out of England squad for October games..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1754E/production/_131366559_gettyimages-1705603490.jpgArsenal forward Bukayo Saka has been ruled out of England's games against Australia and Italy because of injury. The FA confirmed he has withdrawn after being assessed by England's medical team and would not be replaced in the squad, which now has 25 players. England face Australia on 13th October, before taking on Italy in a European Championship qualifier four days later. "No, he will not make it," said Gunners boss Arteta after Sunday's game. "He has not trained for a single session." While he would not disclose the likely length of Saka's spell on the sidelines, Arteta added: "He is not available to play football at the moment." Saka's absence on Sunday ended a run of 87 consecutive Premier League games in which Arteta had played the 22-year-old winger. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/95DE/production/_131366383_gettyimages-1715469115.jpgHe has been struggling with his hamstring in recent weeks, limping off during Arsenal's 2-1 Champions League loss at Lens on Tuesday, and being withdrawn in last weekend's victory at Bournemouth. England manager Gareth Southgate said last Thursday he would take no risks with Saka, despite England being able to qualify for next summer's European Championship during this international break. "We've got that responsibility of qualifying for the country, but I've been a player. I've never ever taken a risk on a player's physical wellbeing, and nor would I," said Southgate. "They [Premier League clubs] have trust in us that we make decisions that are right for the long term whenever we can."
