Thousands of counter-protesters have rallied in towns and cities across England after a week of rioting and disorder.

Gatherings in locations where anti-immigration protests had been expected - including north London, Bristol and Newcastle - were largely peaceful, as counter-protesters formed the bulk of the crowds.

Police had been braced for further violence, with thousands of officers monitoring as many as 100 locations.

The demonstrations followed days of riots initially sparked by misinformation online that the suspect in the fatal stabbing of three girls in Southport on 29 July was a Muslim asylum seeker.

Mosques and hotels housing asylum seekers have been among places targeted over the last week, with some shops burnt out and looted.

On high streets across England, shop owners boarded up windows and closed early on Wednesday in anticipation of further violence.

Immigration lawyers had been told by police to work from home after lists of solicitors’ firms and advice agencies were shared in chat groups as possible targets.

But only a handful of arrests were reported during the evening as demonstrations largely passed off peacefully.

Meanwhile about 1,500 counter-protesters gathered in Bristol. The streets of the city were filled with trade unionists, anti-fascists and members of the black and Asian community.

Your descriptions of the thousands of people across the country gathering to defend peace and non violence leave me shocked. Truly shocked and genuinely astonished that you can call these ordinary people who have views different to yours:

I am almost speechless and actually quite taken aback that anyone can really think this way given the knowledge we all share about what has transpired recently.

Police have made one arrest so far in connection with the large protest in an area of Bristol. Avon and Somerset Police said one person has been arrested after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle and a bottle was thrown.

Thousands of people gathered in an area of Bristol this evening in response to far-right threats. At one point, around 2,000 people were counter-protesting along the West Street and Old Market area where a far-right protest outside a law firm was expected at 8pm. So far, there have been no signs of the far-right, but a group of about 200 people - mainly masked up men - broke away from the main crowd earlier in the evening to go to Centre after hearing rumours of far-right protesters gathering there. Fireworks were let off along Castle Park on the way back to Old Market.

In a statement at 10pm, Avon and Somerset Police said: "We’ve made an arrest on West St after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle & a bottle was thrown.

"We’ve facilitated a largely peaceful protest but we won’t tolerate acts of criminality. Significant numbers of officers remain in the Old Market area to maintain order."

At about 9pm, the crowd slowly started to disperse, with large groups being seen heading up Stapleton Road back towards Easton. However, significant numbers remain at Old Market at present where there is a "party atmosphere" and music is playing from a sound system.

Businesses on the street shut early today, with many having been boarded up, and there are large numbers of police present too - including on horses. This comes as police say incidents of disorder that were seen in Bristol on Saturday are 'completely unacceptable', and were 'not legitimate protests'.

Police chiefs have reassured people in the communities in Old Market and Easton that they will 'not tolerate any behaviour which attempts to divide our communities'. A Section 34 dispersal zone is now in place and Avon and Somerset Police has also been granted enhanced stop and search powers under Section 60 and Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act.

Nothing, but as long as they are peaceful then not a major issue, surely?

Let me elaborate further.

There are elements of the mob rule on the left that will protest against anything that they believe will be deemed to be seen as virtuous, even if it makes no logical sense .

They did this with black lives matter, even though it's manifesto has Marxist intent, and George Floyd was a terrible.. terrible person.

The same is with this rubbish about 'queers' for Palestine.They are so self absorbed in their on self importance, that they don't understand that in Palestine a gay person would be thrown off a roof ...but you've gotta raise that flag .🌈

Their protest's largely make little, if any sense.Other then by them trying to grab the moral high ground, by virtue signaling, if they can.

They then jump upon the next bandwagon, and again with very little thought of what they are doing.They then simply repeat this process, over and over again for different causes.

Before I posted my response to Top up above, I listened to a very stupid girl on the radio talking about how last night was such a great 'victory' and how they were always going to defeat them! ...Defeat who exactly..? Why is this now a contest..?

These are the same people that have grouped every British person...(myself included ) as a "far right racist" just for being proud of being British, and wanting to have a serious discussion about our immigration crisis, and our incompetent government.

These people are so thick, along with being so far up their own asses, that they don't realize that last night that they were protesting against the people, that were protesting against the murder of those 3 British girls!!

I've heard no chants about saving our kids from that side, even in the media..and they say nothing out of respect for those little babies murdered.

And what about the other 10 people that were stabbed and now scared for life, do they bring them up ?

I've seen barely any British flags at the counter demos either. All they have done is come across as anti British, by their very nature, and their completely wreckless rhectic spoken about people like myself... only because I hold a different opinion to them, and NOT a violent one, only a different one.

The English flag to them , is like what garlic is to a vampire.

Do you know how insulting and utterly disgusting it is to be called a Nazi, or a fascist by these clown's? Its the lowest of the low.


See they haven't helped anything..all they have done is created more division in our society, just like the hooligans are doing on the other side that they so say oppose.

These people as well as our default prime minister labeled myself and every other person wanting to protest ( a very dangerous crisis happening in this country ) as a "far right racists " and Im sorry, but that is deplorable , and completely unacceptable, and for them spreading those lies about us they can simply f**k OFF.

Now as for the genuine people there last night, that expressed their free rights to protest against those far right scumbags,I've got no problem with that, continue to do it if needed.

Its the hidden agitators that I've got a problem with, and that's what makes the "radical left" so dangerous.

A High on self-loathing, low on self-esteem bunch of individual's , yet a very dangerous pack of bullies with a very threatening agenda.

So you are against any form of protest that doesn't meet your ideas and ideals.
So you are against 'queers' then. 
They don't group every British person as 'far right racist' - only those who use the death of three innocent children as an excuse to riot, loot, and attack the police.
The far right rioters to use your words - that they don't realize that last night that they were protesting against the people, that were protesting against the murder of those 3 British girls!!
In a free society you can 'protest' about what you want as long as that does not incite hatred, rioting, looting or attacks on the police.
If any side does the latter then they deserve the full force of the law upon them.
