Brussels: Police officer stabbed to death, A police officer has been killed and another has been injured in a knife attack in Brussels.
The two officers were taken to hospital after they were attacked close to Brussels North railway station on Thursday evening.
Local media are reporting that the attacker has also died at hospital after he was shot at the scene.
The attacker's motive is unknown, but anti-terror officials say they have taken over the investigation.
"We took charge of the case because there is suspicion of a terrorist motive, which will be confirmed or disproved by the investigators," spokesman Eric Van Duyse said.
The two police officers were on patrol in the area before being attacked.
Police said another patrol arrived at the scene and "neutralised" the attacker; he was shot in the legs and abdomen before being taken to hospital.
One local resident told the AFP news agency that they heard "five or six shots" fired shortly after the attack, which occurred at around 19:15 local time (18:15 GMT).
In a tweet sending condolences to the dead officer's family and friends, Belgium's Prime Minister Alexander De Croo wrote: "Our police officers risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of our citizens. Today's drama demonstrates this once again."
"My sincere hope is that his hospitalised colleague will be well," he added.
Police tape, sealed-off streets and flashing blue lights bring back bad memories for Brussels.
It was six years ago, but Brussels still bears the marks of a coordinated terror attack - at the main airport and on the metro - that killed 32 people in 2016.
In the coming weeks, nine alleged members of a cell of the so-called Islamic State are due to go on trial for their involvement in the attacks.

Police errors contributed to Solihull deaths..
Two women who were stabbed to death after repeated calls to police were murdered while on the phone to officers begging for help, their family says.
Raneem Oudeh and her mother Khaola Saleem were killed in Solihull in 2018 by Raneem's estranged husband Janbaz Tarin.
A jury at their inquests found police errors "materially contributed" to their deaths.
West Midlands Police has apologised to the family.
The inquest jury ruled the pair were unlawfully killed in the early hours of 27 August.
Tarin was jailed for a minimum of 32 years in December 2018, after admitting murdering them.
After the inquest, Mrs Saleem's sister, Naur Norris, said West Midlands Police "had so many opportunities to save their lives, right up until the end".
In their final hours, Ms Oudeh made seven 999 calls after Tarin struck her at a restaurant and followed the pair home, but officers failed to reach them in time.
In the last call, played at the inquest, Ms Oudeh's screams could be heard as she was attacked by her estranged husband.
It was not the first time Tarin's actions had been reported to police, with the IOPC police watchdog detailing 10 domestic abuse incidents reported to West Midlands Police between April and August.
However, Ms Norris said the force had "failed Khaola and Raneem beyond imagination".
Speaking on behalf of the family, she said her sister and niece's legacy should be a "cultural change" and "no more dismissal of the victims of domestic abuse".
Ms Norris said little had changed since 2018 and clearer records of incidents were needed, with officers requiring more training in how to deal with such crimes.

Man stabbed to death on Birmingham nightclub dance floor..Boxing Day.
A murder investigation is under way after a 23-year-old man was stabbed to death on the dance floor of a Birmingham nightclub.
The man was fatally injured at The Crane on Adderley Street, Digbeth just before 23:45 GMT on 26 December.
Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, West Midlands Police said.
"This was a young man enjoying himself with friends on a Boxing Day night out," Det Insp Michelle Thurgood said.
The incident happened during a Boxing Day event featuring well-known techno DJ Marco Carola, that started at 15:00 GMT.
Police believe the victim was approached by a group before being stabbed and are urging anyone in the club to get in touch.
"We know there were hundreds of people in the nightclub at the time," added Ms Thurgood.
"While we've spoken to a number of them already, we still need to hear from anyone who was there and who witnessed or even filmed what happened."
No arrests have been made but the scene remains closed while officers gather evidence and review CCTV footage.
Neighbourhood officers will be patrolling the area over the coming days to offer reassurance, police added.

Cody Fisher stabbed to death on Birmingham nightclub dance floor - updateichef.bbci.co.uk/news/490/cpsprodpb/F517/production/_128134726_mediaitem128134725.jpgA 23-year-old man stabbed to death on the dance floor of a Birmingham nightclub has been described as a "best friend" by his family. Cody Fisher, a non-league footballer and school sport coach, was fatally injured at The Crane nightclub, just before 23:45 GMT on 26 December. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, West Midlands Police said. His family said: "They have broken our hearts; I have lost my best friend." Police are appealing for witnesses. The incident happened during a Boxing Day event at the club, on Adderley Street, Digbeth and featured well-known techno DJ Marco Carola. Mr Fisher played left back in local non-league football around Birmingham. His picture, released by West Midlands police, shows him in the colours of a Bromsgrove side, and he also played for Stratford Town and Stourbridge. He had been in the Birmingham City FC Academy, and was also a trainee with Walsall, according to social media and local media posts. Police believe Mr Fisher was approached by a group before being stabbed and are urging anyone in the club to get in touch. "We know there were hundreds of people in the nightclub at the time," added Det Insp Thurgood. "While we've spoken to a number of them already, we still need to hear from anyone who was there and who witnessed or even filmed what happened." One clubber told the PA news agency there were "groups of lads" who were "looking to cause trouble". "As soon as me and my friends walked in, we got a very weird vibe and the atmosphere wasn't good," said Sydnee Power, 23, from Birmingham. Another attendee from Wolverhampton said the event was a "disaster waiting to happen". "Me and the friend I was with, not once did we get asked to clear our pockets out even though mine were full. I had cargo trousers on with pockets full," he said. "They didn't even touch me whilst searching me, they just followed the outline of my body with their hands then tapped me to say go on through. "Obviously you want everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves [but] when we got in I said to my friend: 'That's the worst search I've ever seen'. Anyone could have brought anything in." Bromsgrove Sporting FC tweeted it was "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Cody Fisher". "Cody, was a friend to many at the club and we send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones." Stratford Town FC posted a tribute on its website that said: "Our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of Cody Fisher. "Our thoughts are with the you at this very difficult time. "Cody made 54 appearance for The Bards and having started with the club in 2018." Woodrow First School, where Mr Fisher coached children, said: "Everyone is devastated today to hear of the tragic and needless death of this bright, friendly and talented young man. "Many of the children at school know Cody as their sports coach and have enjoyed working with him." No arrests have been made but the scene remains closed while officers gather evidence and review CCTV footage. In a statement, the venue said its staff were "deeply shocked and saddened" by the incident, which happened shortly before the event was due to finish at midnight. It said "our thoughts are with the victim, and his family and friends" and staff were working closely with investigators.

Cody Fisher stabbing: Birmingham nightclub's licence suspended..
The nightclub where a 23-year-old footballer died in a knife attack has had its licence suspended for 28 days.
Birmingham City Council held an urgent meeting earlier after police said there had been "serious management failings" at the Crane nightclub.
The West Midlands force said Cody Fisher had died during "a fight on the dance floor" and officers had then faced "a scene of chaos and drug use".
The suspension is pending a full review hearing to take place at a later date.
Managers of the Digbeth club said they were cooperating with authorities following events on Boxing Day (26 December).
One sergeant's account said the club's security guards had asked officers to help them with crowd control following the stabbing, while other "oblivious" staff members were "wandering around all over the place" and began cleaning up the crime scene.
"They have started to clean the dance floor further down from where the deceased was; officers shouted at them to stop," the sergeant said.
"While officers are doing CPR, you can see people are just wandering around in the scene freely. As soon as we had more officers on the scene they were removed and the whole dance floor was cordoned off and the area was made sterile.
"There were hundreds of small drugs bags and nitrous oxide canisters all over the dance floor. These include the small and the very large nitrous oxide canisters with balloons."
In a statement issued after the hearing, the nightclub said it was focused on "helping support the fullest possible investigation".
"It cannot be business as usual at the Crane and we have not opposed the temporary licence suspension requested by the police," it said.
"It is much too early to comment on details or individual anecdotal accounts surrounding this appalling event; these must be sifted and assessed with care, and we welcome that.
"We recognise that issues such as checks and security facilities employed at the venue on that evening must come under close scrutiny, and whilst our contracted security staff are qualified professionals licensed by the SIA, this will nevertheless be the subject of a careful and detailed review."
Officers said they had arrested a 22-year-old man in London at about 03:00 GMT on Thursday in connection with the stabbing.
He is the third person to be arrested on suspicion of murdering Mr Fisher, a left-back for Stratford who previously played for other non-league clubs including Bromsgrove Sporting and Stourbridge. The sportsman also worked as a coach at a school in Redditch, Worcestershire.
Four others have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

What sort of person does this? Takes a knife into a nightclub, then stabs a total stranger? Will they think it was worth it, when they`re seven years into their sentence? It`s beyond me.

Gare du Nord: Six people injured in stabbing attack..
Six people have been injured with one in a critical condition after a stabbing at Paris's international Gare du Nord station early on Wednesday.
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said a man was stopped by two off-duty police officers who were returning home from a shift.
He said the suspected attacker was shot three times and taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities are trying to establish if there was a motive for the attack.
The attack took place at 06:42 (05:42 GMT) - within one minute all six people were injured and the attacker was stopped.
Mr Darmanin thanked for police for their "brave and effective" intervention, which he said saved many lives.
He added that among the injured was one French border police officer.
Police are yet to name the man, who did not have identity documents on him at the time he was taken to hospital.
Mr Darmanin told reporters the man attacked people in the station with what looked like a home-made weapon.
Police earlier said the man used a knife or blade.
Criminal investigators have taken control of the case for now, rather than anti-terror police, Mr Darmanin said.
The incident caused major delays to trains at the station in the early morning rush, with police cordoning off the station and setting up large white curtains around the attack scene.
Paris Gare du Nord is one of the busiest international railway stations in Europe - with about 700,000 travellers a day.

Ian Kirwan 53: Boy 15 guilty of Redditch Asda stabbing murder..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/820/cpsprodpb/15C2A/production/_127603198_screenshot2022-11-11095400.jpgIan Kirwan was a software engineer contractor for Jaguar Land Rover A 15-year-old boy has been found guilty of murdering a man stabbed to death outside an Asda supermarket. Ian Kirwan, 53, was attacked at the store in Redditch, Worcestershire, on 8 March after challenging him for messing about in the customer toilets. Two youths aged 14 and one of 16, were cleared of killing Mr Kirwan but were found guilty of violent disorder, while a fifth, 16, was cleared on all counts. The jury heard the killer, was part of a masked gang that "terrorised" people. None of the four boys can be legally identified because of their ages, and are due to be sentenced on 15 February. Mr Kirwan, an artificial intelligence engineer at Jaguar Land Rover in Coventry, died after being stabbed in the heart. Birmingham Crown Court heard he had gone to Redditch to buy a light switch from B&Q and had simply used the toilets at Asda. The killer, from Birmingham, then aged 14, had travelled with four other boys by train to the town on the day and subjected Mr Kirwan to a minute-long attack near the entrance of the store. He was an "unfortunate member of the public in the wrong place at the wrong time", jurors were told during the 10-week trial. The fifth defendant was acquitted of murder, manslaughter and violent disorder, having claimed he was not involved in the fatal confrontation and could not have predicted it. High Court judge Mr Justice Fraser told the 15-year-old who was convicted of murder: "I know that your counsel will have explained this to you already - you are going to be sentenced to the youth equivalent of a life sentence. "But I am not going to pass that sentence [now] because I have to fix the minimum term. I am going to do that on the 15th of February." The youth, who appeared via a video-link from a secure unit, showed little reaction as the jury returned its guilty verdict, glancing to his left and then at a floor, before watching other verdicts being returned.

Hexham stabbing: Girl, 16, and boy, 15, seriously injured..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/F05E/production/_128443516_screenshot2023-01-27220714.jpgA 16-year-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries and a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in a suspected stabbing. It happened in the Priestpopple area of Hexham, Northumberland, just after 17:10 GMT. Both teenagers have been taken to hospital and 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault. Northumbria Police said the victims had injuries consistent with having been caused by a bladed article. "This is clearly a serious incident and a full investigation is under way," Det Supt Aelf Sampson said. Officers believe all those involved are known to each other. Their next of kin were being informed, the force said. A police cordon has been set up and is expected to remain in place into the weekend. Meanwhile, police patrols have been stepped up in the town centre to offer reassurance to residents. "If you did see something or have information in relation to what has happened, please report it to police as soon as possible," Det Supt Sampson urged. The arrested teenager remains in custody.

She was fatally wounded in the Priestpopple area of Hexham at about 17:10 GMT on Friday. She and a 16-year-old boy were taken to hospital where the girl later died. The boy's injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Northumbria Police said another boy, also 16, was arrested on suspicion of murder having initially been arrested on suspicion of assault. He remains in custody. 'Devastating time for families'The force said it believed the three teenagers knew each other. Ch Supt Sam Rennison described the girl's death as a "tragedy". Speaking at a press conference, she said she wished to thank members of the public for their support - "particularly those who tried to provide assistance to the injured boy and girl at the scene". "This is a devastating time for the families of these young people. It's really important we continue to provide specialist support and advice to make sure they get through the coming days, weeks and months. "We're obviously in the first 24 hours of the investigation. At this moment in time I'm not going to release any further information. "However, we do not believe there is any wider risk to the community. We are treating it as an isolated incident." Asked about the weapon used, she declined to provide any detail other than it being "a bladed article". Officers remain in the area to continue their inquiries and provide reassurance to the community. ' Ruin so many lives'Hexham mayor Derek Kennedy said the the town was "in complete shock". "To lose one of our children who attends a local high school is just horrendous. "It will ruin so many lives."

Hexham stabbings: Boy, 16, charged with murdering teenage girl..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/820/cpsprodpb/43A3/production/_128451371_hollynewton.jpgA 16-year-old has been charged with the murder of a teenage girl who was stabbed to death in Northumberland. Holly Newton, 15, was fatally wounded in the Priestpopple area of Hexham at about 17:10 GMT on Friday and later died in hospital. A 16-year-old boy, who was also taken to hospital, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The teenager charged with murder has also been charged with attempted murder and possessing an offensive weapon. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is scheduled to appear before magistrates in Newcastle on Monday. Northumbria Police Ch Supt Sam Rennison said Holly, of Haltwhistle, "still had so much left to look forward to in life, and this tragic incident has left her family devastated beyond words". She added: "Their grief simply cannot be put into words, and our thoughts are with both families involved and their loved ones as we continue to support them in every way we can. "The investigation is ongoing, and I'd like to show my appreciation to the people of Hexham - and beyond - who have greatly assisted with our enquiries and shown their support. "While our enquiries continue, we do believe all those involved are known to each other and there is no wider risk to the public." Holly was a pupil at Hexham's Queen Elizabeth High School. A statement from the school said: "We are in shock after the terrible events of Friday evening and devastated at the loss of Holly, a truly lovely student who was quiet, conscientious, helpful and kind. "Our thoughts are with Holly's family at this time of unbearable pain. We will come together as a school community on Monday to support each other as we grieve." A candle-lighting service has been held at Hexham Abbey and the town's mayor, Derek Kennedy, was among those who attended. He said: "The whole town is still coming to terms with this, it's been a massive shock. "A young girl who's just starting life and attending the local high school, starting her education and getting out there, it's just terrible. "It's going to have a big impact on all the schoolchildren when they go back on Monday because one of their own won't be coming back ever again."

Teacher stabbed to death by pupil in France..
A high school student has stabbed a teacher to death in a school in the French town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
French government spokesperson Olivier Véran confirmed Wednesday's attack and said the perpetrator was 16 years old.
Police attended Saint-Thomas d'Aquin school with the local prosecutor, where the student was arrested.
French newspaper Sud Ouest said the attacker entered the classroom while the teacher was giving a Spanish class and attacked her.
The teacher was in her 50s and died of cardiac arrest after emergency services arrived at the school, local media reported.
French TV station BFM said the attacker locked the classroom door and stabbed the teacher in her chest.
France's Education Minister, Pap Ndiaye said in a tweet that his thoughts were with the teacher's "family, colleagues and pupils".
He said he was on his way to the school "straight away".
Local media reported the student may have been suffering from mental health issues. They said at this stage of the investigation there was no suggestion the incident was terror-related.
In a press conference, Mr Véran said the government would support educators across the country in the wake of the incident.
"I can hardly imagine the trauma that this represents," he said.
The school is a private, Catholic establishment near the centre of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a well known French summer holiday location.
By lunchtime, students who had been told to remain in their classrooms were able to leave the school and many were collected by their parents.

Khayri Mclean: Boy killed near school by 'youths lying in wait'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/820/cpsprodpb/2FCF/production/_128993221_huddersfield.jpgA boy was killed outside his school by two youths who were lying in wait for him wearing balaclavas and carrying knives, a court heard. Khayri McLean, 15, was stabbed near the entrance to North Huddersfield Trust School and later died in hospital. Leeds Crown Court heard that as he left for the day, Khayri was met by two boys, aged 15 and 16, who "charged" towards him aggressively. The younger boy admits murder, the older denies it. Prosecutor Jonathan Sandiford KC told the court the 15-year-old had shouted "Oi Khayri" or "Yo Khayri" before jumping in the air, swinging a knife with a 30cm blade and stabbing Khayri. This proved to be the fatal blow as it went through his ribs and penetrated one of his lungs and heart, the court was told. Mr Sandiford said Khayri fell to the floor and was "defenceless on his back" when the 16-year-old went after him, knife in hand, and stabbed him again. "Fortunately, Khayri was able to lift his legs to block the blow and so the knife penetrated his lower leg rather than a more vital part of his body," the prosecutor said. The jury was told that the 15-year-old had pleaded guilty to murder. The 16-year-old, who has since turned 17, denies murdering Khayri and is on trial. Mr Sandiford told the court that although the older defendant did not inflict the fatal blow on 21 September 2022, he is guilty of murder because the pair acted together, "encouraging and supporting each other to carry out that attack". "This was not an act of spontaneous violence but a planned attack in which [the defendants] armed themselves with knives, changed some of their clothing and wore balaclavas to hide their identities before going to lie in wait to attack Khayri as he walked home from school," he said. After attacking Khayri, the boys ran away together, before stopping to remove their balaclavas and the clothing worn for the attack, Mr Sandiford said. "Those items, and most likely the knives used to murder Khayri, were left in bags, concealed in woodland, from where they were later retrieved and disposed of by others," he told the court. Having changed their appearances, the boys calmly walked to within a short distance of where Khayri lay fatally injured in the street, he added. 'Pack of lies' The court was also told that the older defendant's mother had texted him in the aftermath of the incident saying: "Your enemy has been stabbed and it doesn't look good." Mr Sandiford said the 17-year-old has since claimed that he went to the school to confront another person who he believed had broken windows at his mother's house. He was concerned this person and his friends might have knives, so he picked up "a small kitchen knife to defend himself if necessary", the court was told. He did not name his co-defendant, but said "another boy" offered to come with him, and when a group of pupils approached them, the other boy rushed at them and he "instinctively" followed. The boy claims he swung his knife at Khayri "in panic" as he "feared he would be attacked". Mr Sandiford described the claim as "a pack of lies". "The prosecution says this was a well-planned and targeted attack on Khayri McLean with the intention of killing him or at least causing him really serious harm," he added. The trial continues.

Brentford: Ten arrested for murder after man dies in street
Police say 10 people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was fatally stabbed in London.
Officers said the man was found in the street with serious injuries in Brentwick Gardens, Brentford, at 05:15 BST and died at the scene.
It came after the force was alerted to reports of intruders at an address in the same street.
Seven men and three women were subsequently detained and remain in custody.
A post-mortem examination will be scheduled, police confirmed.
Det Supt Figo Forouzan, from Met Police, said: "This is a truly shocking incident that will understandably cause the community concerns.
"I want to reassure the Hounslow residents that we have commenced a thorough investigation with the support of our homicide investigation team to ensure those responsible are brought to justice."
The force has appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
