Cristiano Ronaldo ended his barren spell with the first Europa League goal of his career as Manchester United earned victory at Sheriff Tiraspol.

Erik ten Hag's men suffered defeat at Old Trafford in their Group E opener against Real Sociedad but responded by claiming all three points in Moldova.

The Red Devils opened the scoring in the first half as a lovely team move was coolly finished off by Jadon Sancho from Christian Eriksen's reverse pass.

Sancho, who was left out of the England squad earlier in the day, came close to a second but his low shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Sheriff captain Stjepan Radeljic on the stretch.

But United did double their advantage before half-time courtesy of Ronaldo's penalty, awarded after Patrick Kpozo tripped Diogo Dalot in the box.

Ronaldo could have taken his tally to 700 club goals but side-footed over from the edge of the area while at the other end, Sheriff could not force David de Gea into any meaningful saves.

In the group's other game, Real Sociedad made it two wins from two with a 2-1 victory over Neil Lennon's Omonia Nicosia.

Omonia Nicosia v Manchester United - 5.45pm

Three changes for Manchester United tonight following their chastening derby defeat at the weekend - with the headline being the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo starts up front in place of Marcus Rashford, having spent the entirety of the 6-3 Premier League loss to Manchester City on the bench.

Victor Lindelof and Casemiro come in for Raphael Varane and Scott McTominay in the other starting XI alterations.

Cypriot Cup winners Omonia Nicosia are managed by former Celtic boss Neil Lennon.

Omonia forward Loizos Loizou, 19, said: "He can make it [the difference].

"He helps us think we're not playing against one of the best teams in the world, just to play like we always play.

"He can help us win. In his career as a coach he won a lot of trophies and titles. He knows how to win these titles."

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson believes Cristiano Ronaldo will finish the season as Manchester United's top scorer, despite the Portugal star spending a lot of time on the bench.

Speaking on the Footballer's Football podcast he co-hosts, Wilson was frustrated to see Ronaldo left out of the team for the Manchester derby on Sunday.

However, he predicted that Ronaldo will find his way into the starting line-up and prove his worth to boss Erik ten Hag.

"If you've got Ronaldo at your football club, you play the guy," Wilson said. "He got 20-odd goals last season and is still in peak condition.

"That's what I don't understand. If your philosophy is to press from the front and that's why you don't go with Ronaldo, then put someone in to do the extra running for him.

"He's an attacking weapon that they are fortunate to have. I think he stays until the end of the season and ends up United's top scorer."

Arsenal put in another strong display to comfortably see off Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League at the Emirates.

Striker Eddie Nketiah reacted to poke in the opener after Kieran Tierney's powerful effort came back off the post.

Fabio Vieira crossed it in for Rob Holding to head in a second before the Portuguese made it 3-0 late on.

Mikel Arteta's side have won four successive matches in all competitions and top their Europa League group, as well as leading the Premier League.

They looked like a team playing full of confidence despite Arteta making eight changes from the side that beat rivals Tottenham in the weekend's north London derby.

Nketiah, who also scored in the 2-1 victory over Zurich in September, came into the team and was a threat throughout.

He deserved his goal when he pounced on the rebound from Tierney's strike - he had curled it inches wide earlier and teed up Vieira for his effort which struck the crossbar within 10 minutes.

Vieira was also hugely impressive, coming close on several occasions as well as providing the quality service for Holding's goal and scoring himself when he finished off a scintillating move by Gabriel Jesus.

Captain Granit Xhaka had a free-kick tipped over the bar and another shot saved by goalkeeper Nikita Haikin as Arsenal could easily have added to their tally.

Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt grew into the game in the second half and posed a threat but Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner was not tested enough and they lacked a clinical edge.

There were signs though that Arsenal will need to be at their best again when they travel to Norway for a second meeting next week.

With two wins from as many group games so far, Arsenal now top Group A by two points over PSV Eindhoven, who they face on 20 October.

Arsenal took a big step towards qualifying for the Europa League knockout stage with a slender win at Bodo/Glimt.

The winner came after Bukayo Saka combined with impressive midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga and his toe-poked effort hit a defender before ricocheting back off his chin and past the helpless goalkeeper.

Bodo/Glimt came into the game with a 14-game winning streak at home in Europe and they were spurred on by a boisterous crowd, but they were guilty of missing a number of clear-cut opportunities.

Amahl Pellegrino skewed wide when through on goal in the first half, while Runar Espejord placed over when eight yards out in the second.

It was far from vintage Arsenal on the artificial pitch in Norway, as shown by the fact they had to bring on Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Martinelli after an hour, but the result, combined with the fact he was able to rest key striker Gabriel Jesus and defender Gabriel, will delight manager Mikel Arteta.

The win leaves Arsenal five points clear of third-placed Bodo/Glimt, who have played a game more because the Gunners' fixture against PSV Eindhoven last month was postponed owing to policing issues following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The rearranged match with second-placed PSV takes place next Thursday, when a win will guarantee Arsenal's progression.

For any boyhood Manchester United fan, playing at Old Trafford is a dream come true. Then, to produce the performance of your life, takes things to a whole new level.

That is exactly what happened to Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper Francis Uzoho on Thursday and even Scott McTominay's stoppage-time winner for Manchester United would not spoil his moment.

Uzoho, 23, had only played 134 minutes so far this season, but produced a string of stunning saves as the Cypriots threatened a big Europa League upset.

McTominay finally broke his resistance as the hosts boosted their hopes of qualifying as group winners - but a beaming Uzoho refused to let that ruin his night.

"I am not disappointed," Uzoho told BT Sport. "We had a good game, I am happy, it is not an easy stadium to play at.

"It is a dream come true. I have dreamed to play here for a long, long time.

"When I saw the draw, I wanted to play and I got the opportunity.

"Arguably it is the best I have played. I am proud of my team-mates though, because it is not a one-man job."

When the draw was made in August, Uzoho, who has played 25 times for Nigeria, replied to United's tweet, saying "finally Theatre of Dreams here I come".

He has now played there and produced a performance that will "change his career", according to BT Sport pundit Owen Hargreaves.

"He had the game of his life, he was amazing," added the former United and England midfielder.

"He will nick a move off that. To think he was their back-up goalkeeper.

"He was a wall. His agent will be on the phone and he will be having a Jerry Maguire phone call.

"We all have moments, games that change your career - everyone will know his name.

"This game will change his career, arguably change his life. It is spectacular, that is what sport is all about. He sums it up there with that beaming smile in the interview."

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, now managing Omonia, said Uzoho "hasn't shut up all week" about playing at Old Trafford.

"He was inspiring. I'm very proud of him," said Lennon.

"When you play a team of this calibre you need your goalkeeper to play well and he was world class. I was so happy for him.

"He has had to be patient. The opportunity came along and I had a chat with him about what I wanted.

"I thought he was magnificent. He excelled under the spotlight. I'm so happy for him because all of his hard work has come to fruition."

Premier League leaders Arsenal missed a chance to seal top spot in Europa League Group A as they lost to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

The Gunners only needed a point to go straight through to the last 16 next March.

Arsenal secured their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a narrow victory over Zurich at Emirates Stadium.

Kieran Tierney's thumping 20-yard drive into the bottom right corner ensured the hosts advance as Group A winners.

While Arsenal's margin of victory could have been more significant it proved an ideal night for manager Mikel Arteta.

The Spaniard was able to introduce Bukayo Saka after the break to allay any fitness concerns and also rest several key players prior to Sunday's Premier League trip to Chelsea.

The only complaint was that Arsenal did not put the result beyond doubt during a dominant first-half display in which Eddie Nketiah twice stung the palms of Zurich goalkeeper Yanick Brecher, and Fabio Vieira saw his goalbound effort blocked from close range.

That ensured a nervy finale with Adrian Guerrero's left-foot effort ruled out for offside and Ukrainian forward Bogdan Viunnyk seeing his rasping drive just fly wide of the top left corner as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

However, the Gunners held on and have now won all eight of their matches against Swiss clubs in European competition.
