France defender William Saliba put the Premier League leaders ahead with a towering header from a corner by Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira. But Arsenal's lead lasted just 12 minutes, Goncalo Inacio nodding home the equaliser after hesitancy from keeper Matt Turner following a corner by English winger Marcus Edwards. In an absorbing game in the Portuguese capital, Paulinho fired Sporting ahead only for Arsenal to equalise through an own goal by Japan midfielder Hidemasa Morita. Both teams created numerous chances in a free-flowing encounter. Former Tottenham player Edwards was denied by Turner when the score was 1-1 and Paulinho wasted a great chance to make it 3-1 to the hosts before a wicked deflection off Morita made it 2-2. Arsenal had a chance to take a lead back to Emirates Stadium for the return leg next Thursday (20:00 GMT) but Vieira's header was kept out by Antonio Adan.

Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst were all on the scoresheet as United put themselves in a strong position to reach the last eight when the tie is decided in Seville next week. No-one will claim one win alone will banish the memory of Sunday's record 7-0 annihilation by rivals Liverpool in the Premier League. However, the backing manager Erik ten Hag and his players received from the home supporters suggested recrimination from the stands will not be long lasting. And Fernandes, condemned by many critics for his display at the weekend, had the satisfaction of not only keeping the captain's armband but heading home Luke Shaw's corner from close range after 58 minutes. The Portuguese ran away to celebrate with his hands to his ears as the United fans chanted 'Bruno, Bruno' in his honour.

After an open first half Rashford put United ahead in the 55th minute with a thunderous long-range effort dipping into the bottom corner. The hosts had created plenty of chances before United opened the scoring as Betis' Joaquin saw his early curled effort hit the outside of the post. Erik ten Hag's side had done the hard work in Manchester last week and advanced as 5-1 winners on aggregate.

Europa League Quarter-Final 1st Leg Result
Thursday 13th April
Feyenoord 1 (Wieffer 53) Roma 0ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/656D/production/_129356952_gettyimages-1251787009.jpgMats Wieferr gave Feyenoord a slender advantage over Roma in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie. The midfielder met Oussama Idrissi's left-wing cross, with his 20-yard effort going through a crowded area and bouncing twice on its way in. Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini hit the post with a first-half penalty after a harsh handball call against Wieferr. They went close again when Roger Ibanez's header was nodded onto the underside of the bar by two defenders. Jose Mourinho's Roma lost Argentina forward Paulo Dybala to a thigh injury in the 26th minute, while England striker Tammy Abraham suffered a shoulder issue in the 58th minute. The match was a repeat of the 2022 Europa Conference League final, which Roma won 1-0 thanks to a Nicolo Zaniolo goal. The win extended Feyenoord's unbeaten record in home European games to 14. German side Bayer Leverkusen or Belgian's Union Saint-Gilloise await the winners in the semi-finals.

Europa League Quarter-Final 1st Leg Results
Thursday 13th April
Bayer Leverkusen 1 (Wirtz 82) Union Saint-Gilloise 1 (Boniface 51) .........................................................................
Juventus 1 (Gatti 73) Sporting Lisbon 0 ........................................................................
Manchester United 2 (Sabitzer 14, 21) Sevilla 2 (Malacia 84 og, Maguire 90+2 og)ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/17043/production/_129357249_whatsubject.jpgUnited have threatened to take the lead and now they have it! After good work by Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes plays a superb ball into the feet of Marcel Sabitzer, who has stayed offside, turns and fires a shot into the top corner. It may have taken a little flick off a defender's boot, but few in here care. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/8b0ef8ce-160b-4453-8164-2b6793689a01.jpgHe's done it again! Marcel Sabitzer is on fire. Anthony Martial collects the ball in his own half and drives. He is forced to check but then picks out a pearl of a pass to release Marcel Sabitzer into the box. One touch and then a fired finish past Bono. Man Utd could blow Sevilla away here. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/2d5eccc8-f2b0-4531-9d66-9b55fa3b2209.jpgMarcel Sabitzer had drifted into the number nine position for the first goal when Bruno Fernandes played that superb pass through the Sevilla defence. The Austrian's turn and finish was superb. Erik ten Hag skirted round the issue on Wednesday when he was asked whether he might Sabitzer permanently from Bayern Munich in the summer. I think it would be a good move. Erik Lamela doesn't escape a booking. He puts his boot down on Casemiro's shin. The Man Utd midfielder has slid in to tackle. VAR will take a look to see if this deserves to be upgraded to something worse for the ex-Spurs man. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/74f60bcd-a889-4470-921a-a02531e76e15.jpgWhat a great save by David De Gea, again he is proving his worth for this team. Without him, Man United would have gone in 2-1 up instead of 3-0 or 4-0. It's now 2-0 but it should have been more. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/dcadf079-fbd0-4b29-aa3b-160245a8688b.jpgThere is no market for De Gea with the wages that he has. Top player, you would think in Spain there would be a fight for him and yet he does not have the same prestige in Spain as he does in the Premier League. In fact, according to the last two national team managers, he is not even in the top three in Spain. If he went to Spain, it would be to play for Real Madrid who have Courtois, Barcelona who have Ter Stegen or Atletico Madrid who have Oblak. So no, the only thing I can see happening is him renewing his contract at Man United which he has said already that is what he wants to do. He has become a legendary goalkeeper at Man United. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/c7ec5dd9-8e33-4f10-9f09-bf7575172adc.jpgJadon Sancho does really well to beat a man but after getting into the box he goes down so easily following a totally fair challenge from Gonzalo Montiel. What has happened to that kid who terrorised teams in Germany for Dortmund? ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/7b8ae4c4-2147-4927-846b-e4dcbb64cb65.jpgIt was interesting to see Erik ten Hag make that triple substitution. After moaning about the packed schedule causing Marcus Rashford's injury at the weekend, Ten Hag admitted it was 'a good question' when he was asked why he hadn't taken the England man off once his side had gone 2-0 up against Everton with 19 minutes left. Manchester United have so many games coming up it was probably a sensible move. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/bc4665a9-7a74-45af-8d97-e156f8923fb8.jpg84 mins GOAL - Man Utd 2-1 Sevilla Tyrell malacia owen goal They've risked it all half! Manchester United's failure to put this to bed comes back to haunt them! The home side fail to clear a cross from the right properly and it allows Sevilla to chip a cross to the back post that Tyrell Malacia fatally allows to run to let Jesus Navas steal in and fire home via a significant deflection off the defender. In a flash, the tie is back in the balance. Peter Schmeichel Former Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live What a difference for Sevilla this will make to the home leg. This is what I have been fearing. Sloppy. What is Malacia doing? Navas crosses the ball and it comes off Malacia and De Gea and into the back of the net. What a terrible goal to concede in a game where Man United were in control. Manchester United have imploded! Sevilla's extra man tells and their pressure is rewarded. A cross from the right is met by Youssef En-Nesyri and his header takes a deflection off Harry Maguire and finds the United goal. Who could have seen this coming at 2-0?! 90+2 mins GOAL - Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla Harry Maguire own goal ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/13/eec06330-6456-496b-8786-7718b93d7bf5.jpg90+7 mins FULL-TIME Man Utd 2-2 Sevilla It's advantage Sevilla, after a mad end to this game. At half-time, it was all about whether Man Utd might out this time out of sight. But two late goals, with a Lisandro Martinez injury to leave them with 10 men thrown into the mix, means Sevilla are the team with a bounce in their step. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/104D7/production/_129357766_whatsubject.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/B6B7/production/_129357764_whatsubject.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/168EB/production/_129359329_manutd.jpgMan Utd failed to win a match in major European competition in which they had a two-goal lead for the first time since a 3-3 draw with Basel in September 2011. They remain unbeaten in their last 25 home games in all competitions, winning 21 and drawing four. Manchester United's late capitulation to Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final proved they "are not a top European team yet", according to their former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. Erik ten Hag's side raced into a two-goal lead and were cruising against the Spanish strugglers only to wilt in the face of late pressure and end up drawing. "When they were two goals up, they needed to up the tempo and go for the third goal," Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "That's an ability Ten Hag needs to add. "It was a little bit too casual from certain players and that is my worry. We have seen their lack of ability to manage a game and couple of times this season." Schmeichel also pointed out a lack of on-field leadership at Old Trafford, most notably when a stricken Lisandro Martinez was carried from the field by two Sevilla players. "The club captain was on the pitch and should have managed that situation," he said. "Sevilla had momentum and they carried him off because they wanted to keep going. "United were under pressure so they needed to play the professional game. Instead, it meant United did not have time to regroup, have a conversation with each other and calm it down." Spanish football expert Guillem Balague agreed with Schmeichel, saying: "Manchester United should have managed the game better. "That's the difference between a good team that can be brilliant and a very, very good side that United are not yet." Lisandro Martinez has been such a cornerstone of the Manchester United defence since he has come in from Ajax. He was clearly upset when he was carried off the pitch before he was stretchered to the dressing room. Erik ten Hag said it isn't an Achilles injury, which is good news if that is right, but he didn't say what it was. Ten Hag did say it didn't look good. Martinez seemed to get his foot trapped in the pitch. There was nobody else near him. The season is at such a fine point for Manchester United at the moment. They are aiming for the top four, trying to get into the semi-finals of the Europa League and they are in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. They really can do without a pile-up of injuries. They have got Marcus Rashford out, Raphael Varane went off at half-time yesterday and Ten Gag said he's unlikely to be fit for the game at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, so it just added to a pretty difficult evening for Manchester United. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/14/c677e7f9-35b0-4557-8cce-ba65f94a312b.jpg

The tie is delicately poised at 2-2 after United conceded two late goals in the first leg at Old Trafford. "The timing of emotions is important in big games - we must focus on the best game you can as a team and individual," Ten Hag said. Sevilla have won the trophy a record six times. But Ten Hag said he is "confident" his side can get back on track on Thursday with victory in Spain to progress to the semi-finals. "Defensively we are good, we have the most clean sheets in the Premier League so our organisation all over the pitch is good and attacking we should have scored more goals over the season," said the Dutch boss. "I am confident, especially now we have all the players on board, we score every game." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17A2B/production/_128711869_gettyimages-1413486451.jpg

Europa League Quarter-Final - 2nd Legs - Latest Scores..26 mins
Thursday 20th April - Reports by Emma Sanders and Michael EmonsUnion Saint-Gilloise 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1 (Diaby 2) - (Agg 1-2) Sporting Lisbon 1 (Edwards 20) Juventus 1 (Rabiot 9) - (Agg 1-2) Roma 0 Feyenoord 0 - (Agg 0-1) ............................................................ Sevilla 1 (El Nesyri 8) Manchester United 0 - (Agg 3-2) ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/D090/production/_129429335_gettyimages-1483626435.jpgGOAL - Sevilla 1-0 Manchester United (Agg: 3-2) Youssef En-Nesyri (8) A disaster for Harry Maguire. Sevilla score inside eight minutes and it is a gift from Manchester United. Captain Maguire sends the ball back to David de Gea and then gets it back, but Maguire's pass is cut out by Erik Lamela and it falls to Youssef En-Nesyri and he slots it past De Gea. Sevilla strike first in Spain. United were 2-0 ahead in this tie, they're now 3-2 behind. In his 146th appearance for Sevilla in all competitions, Youssef En-Nesyri has netted his 50th goal for the club. A first chance of the match for Manchester United and it falls to Aaron Wan-Bissaka after good work down the left from Jadon Sancho but Wan-Bissaka's effort is really, really poor straight at home goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and lacking power.

Sevilla 1 (El Nesyri 8) Manchester United 0 - (Agg 3-2) - 35 minsichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/146A7/production/_129432638_gettyimages-1252023050.jpgMore nerves from Manchester United at the back and it's just from a straight-forward long ball through the middle. David de Gea sprints off his line, but Harry Maguire decides to launch it out for a throw-in instead. Colin: Maguire should be looking over his shoulder but that is a hospital pass from De Gea. Awful. Paul: De Gea is a top shot stopper but if you want to play out from back he’s not right for it. That’s why Spain don’t have him as their number one. To then add Maguire into that whole playing out idea is even worse as he’s a calamity as well. Tame from Wan-Bissaka in the end and he had time to take the strike. Well played Jadon Sancho, Jesus Navas is not interested in defending and that is on all night for Sancho if he gets the ball in space. Better from Manchester United. Sevilla with a chance to make it two. It is amazing skill from Nemanja Gudelj with a 'rabona' cross from the left but David de Gea deals with the resulting header from goalscorer Youssef En-Nesyri. That cross though, a thing of beauty. One to try next time you're on a pitch. Or in the office.

DISALLOWED GOAL - Sevilla Sevilla 1-0 Manchester United (Agg: 3-2)The goal is ruled out by VAR. It is back to 1-0 to Sevilla. There was nothing wrong with Lucas Ocampos' finish, but Sevilla were just offside with the ball from Youssef En-Nesyri to Marcos Acuna. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/4/20/06a102a7-6f5d-433a-b8e9-fdd5292e8373.jpgSo a lucky let-off for Manchester United. The video assistant referee comes to save them. But this has been an awful first-half performance from Manchester United. Ivan Rakitic volleys at goal, brilliant technique, but it bounces off the chest Casemiro and goes over the top. Superb defending. Half-Time - Sevilla 1-0 Manchester United (Agg: 3-2) Sevilla are 45 minutes away from the semi-final after Youssef En-Nesyri's goal. The hosts thought they had got the second, but Lucas Ocampos was denied by a very tight offside just before he got the ball. The good news for Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is his side can't do any worse in the second half. They've been really poor tonight and heading out as it stands. Rob Green - Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live Manchester United have been masters of their own downfall. They've gifted another goal to Sevilla and it was scratched off by a kneecap.
