Manchester United do not intend to activate the option to extend the contract of France forward Anthony Martial, 28, when it expires at the end of this season.

Manchester United are open to offers for Brazil midfielder Casemiro, 31, former France defender Raphael Varane, 30, and Netherlands midfielder Donny van de Beek, 26, in January, as well as Martial and Sancho.

If Sancho leaves Manchester United in January, Ivory Coast forward Amad Diallo, 21, could replace him in their first-team squad having just returned from injury.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to TNT Sports: "We didn't lose it today, that's clear. We had good performance but also we made mistakes. Individual errors. In the end it was not good enough.

"Today's performance was very good, we didn't deserve to lose, but we lost the game.

"The team did very well. We were very good in defending organisations, very good in the pressing. But we did not take enough benefit from it, that's the truth. But also Bayern is a good team. Even when they are not in the game, they have individual class and just need one moment. Unfortunately that happened.

"We know we want to be more consistent. As manager I have to improve the team, I have to guide them and the players have to take the responsibility. We have to do that together.

"The players gave everything, you saw the spirit. I have to credit the team, big compliments to the way they worked together, as a team, against a good Bayern side.

"You need energy from the bench, especially our front line, the options were limited."

Look back on the campaign with regret?: "Not with regret. We didn't make it, but we have to accept it. We have to learn from it. We played some good football in the Champions League. We have to take some good performance into the Premier League. We want to be back [in the Champions League]."

On Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw's injuries: "I can't say in this moment. We have to wait 24 hours for an assessment."

Steve, Edgworth: No club is entitled to success, just ask Liverpool. The fact is the Premier League is a lot more competitive than 10-15 years ago. All it takes is a few bad transfer windows and/or managerial appointments and all of a sudden a club can be off the pace. Look at Chelsea - £1bn spent and in a relegation battle. The media drama around MUFC and Erik ten Hag is ridiculous. Give the club and manager time once the ownership debacle is resolved and judge them in 12 months' time.

SD: I'm still behind Erik ten Hag, as I believe most United fans are, but I have to say things are starting to look a bit ominous for him. I can't see us getting another point before the New Year with a tough run of games and increasing injuries - I was dreading Sunday anyway but I'm genuinely concerned we might get another pasting now with Bruno, Maguire and Shaw on the absence list. The players have no drive, no passion, seemingly no desire to give the fans at least a little bit to get enthusiastic about. It's a shambles on the pitch and the players need to shoulder the blame for once - too many times we've seen this "under the bus" thing happen and it might well happen again soon.

Dale, Kettering: No matter how bad Utd's downfall gets, it will never not be funny. Smug fanbase believing they are entitled to a team that wins all the time. Hope Liverpool stuff them again on Sunday and Erik ten Hag just stands, as usual, looking blank on the sidelines!

Manchester United's drawn-out ownership saga could be resolved before Christmas Day.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is eager to get a deal signed off before 25th December which would see his Ineos Group pay around £1.25bn to buy 25% of the club.

BBC Sport understands there has been fresh impetus around negotiations this week.

It is more than a year since the Glazer family announced they were considering selling the club.

However, despite several false dawns, the long-mooted deal for Ratcliffe's Ineos to become minority shareholders has still not been confirmed.

It is expected advisers on all sides will work late on Friday, or into the weekend, if necessary providing a positive outcome is still possible before the Christmas break.

Once a deal is agreed it will be followed by a six-to-eight week period for the purchase to be signed off by the Premier League.

Many at Old Trafford feel the continuing delay is having a negative effect on the club, with most still unsure of Ratcliffe's plans for the football side, nor who is likely to be working for him at Old Trafford, other than trusted Ineos director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford.

Ineos and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani both initially tabled bids of around £5bn for the 20-time English champions.

However, neither bidder was willing to reach the Glazer family's valuation, with co-chairs Joel and Avram Glazer both known to be reluctant sellers.

Sheikh Jassim withdrew from the process in October, claiming his final bid, thought to be double United's $3.2bn (£2.64bn) stock market valuation, had not met the Glazers' demands.

Ratcliffe had already amended his initial plan to buy the Glazers' 69% shareholding and reduced it to a 'majority' stake.

But it was only when he reduced it again, to an anticipated 25%, that the potential for an agreement increased.
