Man Utd: Marcus Rashford birthday party 'unacceptable' to Erik ten Hag after derby defeat..By Simon Stone, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15BBD/production/_131612098_gettyimages-1769066886.jpgMarcus Rashford's birthday celebrations hours after Manchester United's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City were "unacceptable" and the forward has apologised, says manager Erik ten Hag. The party last Sunday night was pre-planned, and attending the gathering did not prevent Rashford from arriving on time for training on Monday. "I am aware of it and I spoke with him about it," said Ten Hag. "It is unacceptable. I told him. He apologised and that is it." Ten Hag was clearly unhappy at the optics of Rashford being seen out in one of Manchester's most exclusive nightspots when he had just been part of an abject Premier League display in which United ended up being comprehensively outclassed. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/137EB/production/_131615897_rashford.jpgThe manager refused to say whether the England international, who turned 26 on 31 October, had been fined, saying it was an internal matter. However, he confirmed Rashford had not been omitted from the starting line-up for Wednesday's EFL Cup fourth-round defeat by Newcastle as a disciplinary measure. It is not the first time Rashford has been rebuked by Ten Hag. On New Year's Eve last year, he was put on the substitutes' bench for United's Premier League game at Wolves after being late for a team meeting. The striker subsequently scored the winner after his introduction from the bench.

Several Saudi clubs including Al-Nassr are keen on signing Manchester United's French centre-back Raphael Varane, 30, in the January transfer window. Nice have told French centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo, 23, they are willing to sell him at the end of the season. Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan and Atalanta are all said to be interested. Manchester City want Manchester United's 18-year-old English midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. But United are relaxed about City's long-standing interest in Mainoo.

Man Utd ownership: F1's Toto Wolff would consider joining Sir Jim Ratcliffe bid..By Andrew Benson, Chief F1 writer.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11D3D/production/_131612037_ratcliffe_wolff_getty2.jpg Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group owns a third of the Mercedes F1 team, which is run by Toto Wolff Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff says he has spoken to Sir Jim Ratcliffe about joining his bid to buy a shareholding in Manchester United. Ratcliffe has made an offer to buy 25% of the club from the Glazer family. The founder of petrochemicals giant Ineos owns a third of Mercedes F1, with Wolff and Mercedes owning equal shares. "Jim has shared the trajectory with me. I very much respect his values and we trust each other," Wolff told the Press Association. However, he added in an interview with Sky Sports at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix that any investment was "very far away". Ratcliffe's Ineos Group is aiming to secure a 25% stake in United but the deal is still to be completed. He wants to assume control of the football operations side of United. Wolff made his fortune by investing in internet and technology companies before moving into motorsport, first with Germany's HWA, which has links with Mercedes, and the Williams F1 team before taking over at Mercedes F1 in 2013. The 51-year-old Austrian added: "I have never aimed for trophy investments but I like the competitiveness of the Premier League. "Jim and Manchester United is a love story because he is born there. Our personal relationship is strong and with Ola Kallenius (Mercedes-Benz chief executive), they call us the Three Amigos because we live in the no-nonsense world. "If we felt I could contribute then I would consider joining him at Manchester United." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/7A4F/production/_131611313_ratcliffe_wolff_getty.jpg

Fulham 0 Manchester United 1 (Bruno Fernandes 90+1)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/171D9/production/_131618649_reut.png Each of Manchester United's last seven Premier League wins have been by a single goalCaptain Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time winner against Fulham to alleviate the pressure on Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag. United were heading for another game without a win or a goal when Fernandes drilled low past Bernd Leno from the edge of the box following a poor clearance. In a disappointing game of few chances, Scott McTominay thought he had given the visitors an eighth-minute lead, but it was ruled out for offside after referee John Brooks viewed it on the pitchside monitor. Fernandes, before his winner, forced Leno into an acrobatic save while Andre Onana made two saves to deny Harry Wilson and Joao Palhinha. Up until the dramatic finish, United struggled to make an impact, while their injury problems continued when Marcus Rashford failed a fitness test before the match on a leg injury. Rashford had been criticised by Ten Hag on the eve of the match, with the United boss describing the England forward's birthday celebrations after last week's 3-0 defeat by Manchester City as "unacceptable". Harry Maguire played the full match despite suffering a head injury early on, while the game was stopped on a couple of further occasions so the defender could be checked. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/FCA9/production/_131618646_mu11.png

Here are some of your comments:
Man Utd fans
Rateesh: We cannot rely on individual brilliance and miracles to be a winning team. This victory is nothing more than just relief we didn't lose. This mentality of celebrating or criticising individuals need to stop. Scoring goals and playing beautiful football consistently needs to be lauded. Consistency is the key. Until then, it's worrying times. Kath: Not the best performance but at least some hope. Maguire was magnificent - and who would have thought that a few weeks ago. Ronnie: Not a great improvement but playing Garnacho is a must. He works hard, helps the defence and attacks the penalty area - the complete opposite of Anthony, who doesn't do any of these things. Gee: The manager must learn that beating up players in public is not the answer. The players must learn they are not bigger than the club and act like adults, not spoilt children. They all need to grow up for the club to get back where it belongs, not where it is now! ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/755/cpsprodpb/2ba6/live/08fccb70-7bc6-11ee-8ddb-47bd0cd4f829.jpg

'Manchester United need Maguire's leadership'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/987e/live/e2be4710-7bd7-11ee-8139-61b1db4c8e2f.jpgThe Match of the Day panel were full of praise for Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, who brushed aside a number of knocks - including a heavy looking early blow to the head - to put in an impressive display in Saturday's 1-0 win over Fulham. Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown said: "I'm a big fan. I think he's been one of the top defenders in the Premier League for some years. "He was spraying the ball around, playing with such confidence. He was so brave and was so important for them. "If Manchester United are going to get out of trouble they need this guy on the pitch and his leadership. "The stats suggest that he was dominant in every area - touches, clearances, duels won. That's why they kept him on." Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy added: "Great example of resilience and determination for any players who are in that position and thinking they're out in the cold. "He deserves a lot of credit and if everyone who played for Manchester United had his attitude and application they would be in a better place."

Harry Maguire: Brain injury charity Headway calls for stronger action on concussion..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1402A/production/_131626918_gettyimages-1763885654.jpg Harry Maguire has made six Premier League appearances for Manchester United in 2023-24Brain injury charity Headway wants stronger action on concussion protocol following a "concerning" incident with Manchester United defender Harry Maguire on Saturday. Maguire showed signs of discomfort following a collision with Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz. He was assessed by United's medical staff before being allowed to continue. Headway chief executive Luke Griggs said it was "concerning for a number of reasons". The England defender had a cut above his eye after his head made contact with the shoulder of Muniz just two minutes into the Red Devils' 1-0 win at Craven Cottage. He passed medical checks and was deemed fit to continue but referee John Brooks called for another assessment with around an hour played when Maguire looked dazed following a headed clearance. Griggs said: "We are not privy to the discussions with his medical team, nor should their professionalism be questioned. This is an issue with the very culture of football and its stubborn refusal to put players' health above all else - including the result of a game. "Every time the 'if in doubt, sit it out' principle is seen to be ignored in elite level football, our chances of educating younger players and better protecting future generations from short and long-term brain injury is diminished. "Temporary concussion substitutions would immediately help return some credibility to the process, but an evolution of attitude is urgently needed." Manchester United are said to be supportive of the action taken by their medical staff, with Maguire cleared via the concussion protocols for the first incident, while it is understood his second assessment was due to a hand injury.

Marcus Rashford: Man Utd forward wants 'malicious rumours' about future to stop..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E986/production/_131628795_gettyimages-1752955800.jpg Marcus Rashford made his Manchester United debut in 2016Marcus Rashford has called for gossip about his future at Manchester United to stop after he missed Saturday's win at Fulham through injury. Rashford was criticised by boss Erik ten Hag after he went out to celebrate his birthday hours after the 3-0 loss against Manchester City just over a week ago. But Ten Hag confirmed the striker's absence on Saturday was due to injury. "Please STOP spreading malicious rumours," Rashford said. The 26-year-old posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, in response to The United Stand account, a Manchester United fan channel. The United Stand teased their latest podcast by asking: "Rashford's future in doubt? WE'RE LIVE!" The England forward did feature from the bench in the 3-0 Carabao Cup loss against Newcastle three days after the encounter with City. Rashford was Manchester United's leading scorer last season with 30 goals across all competitions but has struggled to match those figures this campaign - registering just once. United have lost five of their 11 Premier League fixtures this campaign but Saturday's last-gasp victory over Fulham saw them bounce back from successive defeats in the league and Carabao Cup. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/9B66/production/_131628793_gettyimages-1763745166.jpg

WEDNESDAY 8th NOVEMBER 2023 - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - GROUP A
FC Copenhagen v Manchester United - 8pmichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/108A0/production/_131644776_gettyimages-1768063920.jpgMarcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United's squad for the Champions League trip to FC Copenhagen, with manager Erik ten Hag insisting the striker is "committed" to the club. The 26-year-old, who has struggled for form this season, missed the 1-0 win at Fulham after a knock in training. But he will travel for Wednesday's game, looking to improve on his record of one goal in 14 games so far. "He's investing hard work in training to get back into form," said Ten Hag. "Marcus is very committed to Manchester United." When asked if the England forward would be ready for the match in Denmark, Ten Hag replied: "100%. (He) missed one game with a small knock." Rashford was United's top scorer in 2022-23 with 30 goals across all competitions, but has only netted once this season - in a 3-1 loss to Arsenal in September. Defender Victor Lindelof is also back in the squad for the game at Copenhagen, having missed Saturday's game at Fulham which the Red Devils won late on through a Bruno Fernandes goal. Full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka could make his first European appearance of the season after recovering from injury, while 19-year-old Omari Forson has travelled with the team. Midfielder Casemiro remains sidelined with a hamstring issue, while defenders Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia also miss out. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/156C0/production/_131644778_gettyimages-1758298794.jpg

Not to mention players unavailable because of choices made by himself and the club hierarchy. He is, I feel, narcissistic and inflexible, and it shows in his tactics, formations and selections. Unable to adapt to different situations and demands. Other managers seldom need a 'plan B' against him, as it is clear what to expect. James: As a Man Utd fan for 50 years, I think Rashford red card was correct. He was very unlucky and didn’t intend but he could have done serious damage albeit by accident and he had to go. Even with 11 men, Man Utd are just chaotic every game. At times really good and at times just a mess. No consistency. I’m at a loss as to what they should do because this seems to be the new norm. Depressing as a fan. Ricky: The red card was a joke! That should be used as a test to all referees. Those who vote red card should be sacked. Stuart: Rashford should have had a yellow. Seen plenty of similar instances in the Premier League when players either get away with it or get a yellow. VAR also got both penalties wrong but at least it was consistent in awarding both for the same thing. Dave: Please stop bleating about VAR, injuries & bad luck. These expensive over-paid players are just not good enough! John: Not really sure what Man Utd fans are complaining about. Potential ankle breaker of a tackle and he wasn't actually playing or even looking at the ball. How would that not be a red ? Silvio Di Fede: In today's football, Rashford's challenge is a daylight red card. Clear and cut. Andrew: I am sorry, but I have absolutely no sympathy for Man Utd and their supporters, they told us LFC fans to shut up and accept the decision when it happened to Curtis Jones - how does that medicine taste now ? James: It’s never a red card. The other player lunged in, NOT Rashford. Once again, Man Utd unfairly penalised. Steven Bennett: Not even a foul. Rashford is in possession of the ball and the Copenhagen player endangers himself by getting too close. Also both players feet were in the air a few frames before. Derek: Rashford's foul could have broken Jelert's ankle. Luckily it didn't. It was not intentional but it was dangerous...that's why a red card is justified. Rich: If the Curtis Jones red card against Spurs was a red then this Rashford one has to be too! Don't agree with both, but at least there is consistency.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0460/live/e8569580-61fe-11ee-8068-c19f6a8a5beb.jpgWe asked for your views after Manchester United's Champions League defeat at Copenhagen. Here are some of your thoughts:Andy: I'm not surprised at the result. United have been poor in all of their games this season. A lucky win at the weekend seems to raise false hope but it cannot disguise the poor form and fitness. We’ve seen it before when managers start bemoaning their bad luck and fail to acknowledge their own poor decision making and stubbornness. Jon: They have no consistency in pattern of play. Disappointing the ways we play to lose matches. I really don't know why Marcus Rashford did what he did. He has not been resourceful since the beginning of this season. That is not what is expected of him, match after match, not much impact. Not happy with this team at all. Tony: It’s an awful showing and I’m sorry to say it’s all down to the lack of discipline in the dressing room. The manager needs to go, we cannot keep making excuses for refereeing decisions and injury-time winners against teams where United have been lucky. Adam: United actually played their best football of the season but were outclassed by a determined referee. Common sense has been removed from the refereeing of the modern game. While this result is comedy gold for other fans, one should question whether this is how football should be run. In another era no red card, no penalties and United win this game. Graham: It's time for Erik to go. I have backed him all the way since he was first appointed but for his own sake and career, quit now. Maybe he is out of his depth or maybe he is too good for United. The club from top to bottom is a shambles but this is now Erik's team and the signings made by him have only added to probably the worst squad in history.

Hojlund has scored five goals in four Champions League appearances but is still yet to register in the league after signing for United in the summer for £72m from Atalanta. "You need a striker who is going to get you anywhere in the region of 20-25 goals. He has got off to a decent start in Europe but he struggles in the Premier League," Yorke told BBC Radio 5 Live. "Maybe the demands and pace there is different. Maybe in the Champions League it is a bit more tactical and played at a slightly slower pace but he seems to have fitted into the Champions League. "That record is really good and we would like to see that record improve now in the league. But when you are playing in a struggling team, that doesn't create much for you, you will always struggle no matter how good you are." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/9/dc851de4-6b0e-4807-8e1d-c8a75cc42d0d.pngFormer Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke: "The Marcus Rashford decision was harsh but ultimately that is still nine defeats this season which is not particularly good. "That also does not change the dynamic of that Champions League group now that we are at the bottom of it. As bleak as it might look we still have an outside chance of qualifying. "When you make the start that United did and get the red card, you expect to show that resilience, which has been part of the DNA at United for many years. "After last season you expected [United] to be stronger not weaker. So there is a lot of questions there. Looking from the outside I would have done things differently, but in hindsight it is easy to do that. At the moment things are really going against him and Erik ten Hag is under the pump." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/9/a840b366-c57c-4fef-8e86-c80c4a7852de.jpg

SATURDAY 11th NOVEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Manchester United 1 (Lindelof 59) Luton Town 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14244/production/_131700528_gettyimages-1787746280.jpg Victor Lindelof scored his first Premier League goal of the seasonManchester United secured a much-needed victory over Luton at Old Trafford to ease the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. A rare goal from Sweden defender Victor Lindelof, his first since December 2020, proved enough to reward the hosts' dominance. It should have been more, with Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho all guilty of wasting excellent opportunities. But a second successive clean sheet, for the first time this season, helped secure the points to please Ten Hag, less so the injury that forced star striker Hojlund off 11 minutes from time. That is four Premier League wins out of five games for United though, even if their cup form - at home and abroad - has not been as good. It also means they head into a potentially significant international break on a positive note given it could bring confirmation of an addition to the United ownership in the form of Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/82DC/production/_131700533_gettyimages-1787696985.jpgThe Legend Alex Ferguson and Big Sam...On his return to the directors' box for the first time since the death of his wife, Lady Cathy, Sir Alex Ferguson was accompanied by his friend and former managerial rival Sam Allardyce. Midway through the first half, the TV cameras panned to the pair, just as Allardyce committed to a lengthy yawn. It was an unfortunate reaction that didn't reflect play. The home side had done most things right as they dominated proceedings without finding the goal they so desperately needed. Rashford, one goal all season, blazed a half-volley over from an angle. Hojlund, no Premier League goals yet, got his knee to a deflected Rashford cross but couldn't get any strength behind it to take it past Thomas Kaminski, who kept the initial effort out with his chest and then scooped the ball away before a home player could prod the rebound in. Later in the half, Hojlund found Garnacho in lots of space on the edge of the Luton box but the Argentine's decision to control rather than shoot first time was fatal as it gave Kaminski chance to close him down and the opportunity was gone. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12ADE/production/_131701567_gettyimages-1775865435.jpgChristian Eriksen had to be replaced by Mason Mount in the first halfUnited continued in the same positive manner during the second half. But aside from Lindelof's goal, driven home after Rashford's off-target shot from the calm Mason Mount pass that set him up, they struggled in front of goal. Rashford hit another effort straight at Kaminski, who also repelled Scott McTominay's near-post header. It left United vulnerable, but Luton lacked the touch of class to make them pay. Allardyce would presumably have approved of the direct manner of Luton's only significant opening of the first half as Carlton Morris rose impressively to meet Issa Kabore's right-wing cross, forcing Andre Onana into a full length save to his left. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/178FE/production/_131701569_gettyimages-1787830489.jpgHe would have been less forgiving of the Hatters in the second half, when Ross Barkley wasted a free-kick in an excellent position and former United defender Teden Mengi sent their only shot on target straight at Onana. That is 19 straight away defeats at United for Luton now, going back to the 19th century, but these are not the games on which their Premier League future will be decided. There is still an element of 'pinch me, look where we are' about the club whose last visit to this stadium was in 1991. And for 30-year-old midfielder Jordan Clark, whose CV includes a loan spell at nearby non-league club Hyde, a top-flight debut as a second-half substitute must feel very satisfying.

"My memory was meeting him for the first time when I got signed [at United]," Stepney told BBC News. "I knew straight away what a great guy he was, a humble guy. "Nothing was over his head or anything like that, it was all about playing for Manchester United. Even on international duty it was about winning and that was what Bobby Charlton was all about. A humble guy, a great family man. It never went to his head." When asked about what Charlton was like in the dressing room, Stepney said: "It didn't matter what the score was, at half-time he would say 'we can score four more'. That was Bobby. He was a winner. He never wanted to be a loser. He was an absolute winner - let's be honest he scored some great goals to win games." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/13/2fa41e8c-ac91-4786-aa93-d510b142ef88.jpg Thousands of fans applauded as Sir Bobby's funeral cortege passed Old Trafford.
