Manchester United could bid for Crystal Palace's 23-year-old England defender Marc Guehi in January. Sweden defender Victor Lindelof, 29, expects Manchester United to trigger a one-year extension clause in his contract, with 12 months left on his current deal. Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans, 35, thought he would have to retire because of injuries last season before returning to Manchester United in the summer. Former Tottenham head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is favourite to become sporting director at Manchester United, putting current football director John Murtough's job at risk.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/83e5/live/d64e08c0-496b-11ed-9ae9-959994b8a64c.pngManchester United winger Jadon Sancho will be transfer listed unless he apologises to manager Erik ten Hag. The 23-year-old was left out of United's loss to Arsenal last month for not meeting training standards. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's proposed deal to take a 25% stake in United is unlikely be completed in time for the opening of the January transfer window, stunting the side's ability to spend big this winter. Detail has been thin on the ground from Thursday's eagerly-awaited Manchester United board meeting. The meeting was set up because the club are due to announce their end of year financial results by the end of the month and it is a statutory requirement. However, with investment from Sir Jim Ratcliffe expected, it was thought the ownership situation and the strategic review launched by the Glazer family in November could at least get a mention. Ratcliffe is hoping to secure an initial 25% minority stake. I have been told his overall aim is still to get control of the club. How long that takes is another matter. Ten Hag's side will offer one-year contract extensions to defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof and pen a new deal with midfielder Hannibal Mejbri.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, speaking to Sky Sports: "First and foremost it is a really sad day. We obviously found out this afternoon and preparing for a game it hit us hard. Sir Bobby came into the dressing room a lot and he lit the place up. He is an absolute legend of the club. We are delighted to win the game but this is more than football and our thoughts are with his family. "He'd always come in if we won or lost but his presence was really felt in the dressing room. You'd always see him around the club. We will miss him, the world will miss him." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/bdab/live/548322d0-7057-11ee-9229-c1913454ec1c.jpgPep Guardiola, Manchester City manager: "A huge loss for his family and for the Manchester United family and for English football, European football. "A big legend. On behalf of Manchester City our condolences to his family, Manchester United and for everyone because we have the Premier League that we have because of these type of people." Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final: "Very sad news today. We will never forget him & nor will all of football. A great colleague and friend. He will be sorely missed by all of the country beyond sport alone." Prince William, English Football Association president: "Sir Bobby Charlton. First Division Champion. European Champion. World Champion. Gentleman. Legend. A true great who will be remembered forever. Thank you Sir Bobby." Rio Ferdinand, former England and Manchester United defender: "Sir Bobby. Icon, Legend, Great… these words are thrown around by all of us to many who 100% don't deserve them, especially when you compare them to a man of Sir Bobby's calibre." Gary Neville, former Manchester United defender: "One of the original Busby Babes. He won youth cups at Man Utd then won the European Cup, the World Cup and in the modern era he was a director of the club. No doubt [he was] English football's greatest player and ambassador. A champion on and off the pitch." Martin Keown, former Arsenal defender: "He was a truly wonderful player and an immense talent. He's been a great ambassador for Manchester United in recent years. The way he carried himself - he was such a dignified man and he's going to be remembered for a very long time." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1672E/production/_126805919_01b315a8-eddd-49c5-9fc5-442d19cd5881.jpgJack and Bobby 1970

Sir Bobby Charlton: Denis Law on 'dream' Man Utd team-mate - 'Most keepers didn't stand a chance'..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0EE2/production/_131501830_476dfa87f0744c022524d222430326d8a88f82ae.jpg Fans have adorned the United Trinity statue with scarves and other tokens of remembranceDenis Law has paid tribute to his former Manchester United team-mate Sir Bobby Charlton, saying playing with him was "a dream". Along with George Best, they formed United's so-called 'Holy Trinity' as the club rebuilt following the 1958 Munich air disaster. A statue of the trio at Old Trafford has become a place for fans to remember Charlton, who died on Saturday aged 86. "What a striker of the ball he was," Law, 83, told United's website. "He could hit the ball so hard that I knew most keepers didn't stand a chance. On the rare occasion they did manage to deflect it, it would drop nicely to me to finish it off. "We had many special and successful years together and he was a joy to play with. He knew where every player was on the pitch and for me that was a dream. I knew, if Bobby had the ball, it would find me, and it did." Although an injured Law missed United's victory in the 1968 European Cup final, as they became the first English team to win the trophy, he won two league titles alongside Best, who died in 2005, and Charlton. Charlton spent 17 years as a first-team player at Old Trafford, netting 249 goals in 758 games, and also scored 49 goals in 106 appearances for England, famously helping them win the 1966 World Cup. Law said: "The great part of playing with Bobby and George was that if one of us was having a bad day, the other two knew and that's what made our relationship special. "Sir Bobby was an unbelievable player and a gentleman. Manchester United meant everything to him. "I am saddened by the news, like all football fans today." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/AB22/production/_131501834_gettyimages-958019632.jpg

Evidently, Manchester City are not happy at the behaviour of some supporters around the death of Sir Bobby Charlton. City's condemnation of the 'offensive chanting of a small number of fans' at the Etihad Stadium was swift & was echoed by the Premier League in their own statement. However, it has been noted City scarves have been left at the Holy Trinity statue at Old Trafford to pay tribute to Bobby. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/23/f95853ac-3066-44e4-8967-6b9a08f8ce76.jpgJohn Stiles, son of Nobby Stiles who played with Sir Bobby Charlton, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "He was a wonderful, special man who happened to be one of the greatest footballers the world's ever seen. "My dad [Nobby Stiles] said he was the greatest player he ever saw. He could do things nobody else could do. "I shudder to think what a Bobby Charlton would cost [in the transfer market now]. "He was a Rolls Royce, he was like a throughbred with two great feet and a great attitude. Just a magnificent, magnificent footballer. "It's his smile , when you met him. He would ask you about yourself. Not the football, it's that." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/23/142c8679-d861-4387-a6c7-2fe76ab33c5c.jpg

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker: "You can only judge players that you have seen in your lifetime and I was lucky enough to see him play when I was a young boy. He was one of my heroes, one of many people's heroes. I was always nervous and in awe of him, but he was so gentle as a man he always put you at ease. He was always so kind. He was unique. Wherever you go in the world, even if they didn't speak the language, they knew two words - Bobby Charlton."
Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney: "Winning the World Cup in '66 and the European Cup in '68 after what he'd been through with the Munich disaster - he's had a great life."
Former United midfielder Michael Carrick: "He's a great, an absolute legend of the game. He's an iconic figure around the world. I was lucky enough to get to know him and feel his support and feel what Manchester United meant to him. It was a position I never took for granted."

He won youth cups at Man Utd then won the European Cup, the World Cup and in the modern era he was a director of the club. "He used to come into the changing room - win, lose or draw. He is an icon. "What a true gentleman of not many words, but when he spoke you stood still, stopped what you were doing and listened. "A lot of the history was living and breathing through him and he was a constant at the club while I was there - travelling with us all over the world. "Win, lose or draw he would be in the changing room wishing us well. Sammy McIlroy has described his former Manchester United team-mate Sir Bobby Charlton as "one of the greatest of all time". McIlroy, 69, paid a warm tribute to Charlton, who was in the United team when he made his debut for the Old Trafford club in 1971. "He was an absolutely fantastic footballer," McIlroy told Radio Ulster. "I made my debut alongside him and was very proud and privileged to do so. He was what Manchester United were all about, a fantastic ambassador for the club." He added: "He had everything. Both feet - left foot, right foot. He could hit it from 20 yards into the top corner, and he did that many times for England and Man United. "If any kids haven't seen Bobby Charlton play then go and have a look at him in his pomp. What a player and what a man. "He will never be forgotten by supporters of England and Manchester United. [He was] one of the greatest of all time, no doubt about that." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/23/b81a810d-40b5-4e23-8099-5c3bc996def1.jpgManchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney said: "I'm still in shock. Coming out at half-time for the second half, we heard the news. "Winning the World Cup in '66 and the European Cup in '68 after what he'd been through with the Munich disaster - he's had a great life. He's a great, an absolute legend of the game. "He's an iconic figure around the world," added Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player. "I was lucky enough to get to know him and feel his support and feel what Manchester United meant to him. It was a position I never took for granted." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/23/28bd3d5a-3cee-42bc-92ec-bd236346a44f.jpgManchester United boss Erik ten Hag on the atmosphere at the club after Sir Bobby Charlton's passing: “Bobby was a legend a giant not only for Manchester United but for football so his legacy, what he left were the standards, the high standards. We have to live it every day. First of all our thoughts are with his family, his wife, his children, his grandchildren but also what he meant for man u the importance for man u the standards he set we have to live. The last couple of days, they were emphasised." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/65D6/production/_131507062_gettyimages-1749100794.jpg

Here are some of your words:John, Brampton: Bobby Charlton was my boyhood hero - and has been an inspiration ever since - a gentleman and a great sportsman. Thank you Bobby for all the magic moments you gave to so many English and Man Utd supporters. Stan: Privileged to see all of Bobby's World Cup goals live on a black and white TV. He was a schoolboy's hero in the 60 and 70s. So many kids will have screamed his name scoring in the schoolyard or against the garage door! Jay, Milton Keynes:106 caps and 49 goals in a time where friendlies didn't count says it all. England's best ever. Thank you Sir Bobby Charlton. David: Sir Bobby Charlton was the nearest in British football to royalty. The greatest ambassador we had. Even those not interested in football very much knew of him. Rest In Peace to a genuine legend. Mark, Salford: Legend is a word used way, way too loosely in the world of football and sport. What a legend this man was both for the club I love and our country. RIP Sir Bobby Charlton, a true gentleman and wonderful, wonderful player. They don't make them like Sir Bobby anymore. Katie B, Stratford :Sir Bobby epitomised the very best, not only of United, but of football itself. A true gentleman. Fergus: Sir Bobby was a hard-working soldier and he wanted the best for everybody. He deserves to be a legend and that’s why he is one. Albert: I have been a Manchester United fan all my life, I remember when Sir Bobby got married at the church across the road from where I lived. Great man, great legend, great memories. RIP Sir Bobby. Paul: The word legend is a much misused term especially in the world of football but I'm proud to say that I had the opportunity to witness his skills at Old Trafford along with other legends like George Best and Denis Law. These are true legends of football. Sir Bobby was the best ambassador for all we love about English football. Rest in peace. Jeff: I met Sir Bobby Charlton in the 1980s when he opened a car show room in Peterborough. He was such a lovely man. I have a photo of us both together, I will never forget that day. It was a honour to meet him way back then! Malcolm: I first started supporting United and Bobby Charlton in 1961 while still at school. In 1963 I sat for my GCE and wrote about United’s FA Cup win against Leicester City, with Charlton and Law the heroes. I passed my exams. And three years later I was present at Wembley to see England's games as they went on to win the World Cup. He was a great player. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31246808.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_Manchester-United-squad.jpg

Data displayed on MOTD showed Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial have contributed one goal in a combined 1,398 minutes. He said: "If they want to get in and around that top four then one thing has to change and the forwards have to chip in more with goals. They certainly created the chances against Sheffield United, and they should’ve put the ball in the back of the net more than they did. "Rashford, Hojlund, Antony, Garnacho, Martial, you’ve got to ask for more and you’ve got to demand more when you’re getting into these positions and working the ball, passing. "They are getting into positions and they are creating the chances, so I suppose the time to worry is when you’re not doing that at all. "I mean Scott McTominay is their top scorer and he's only started three league games and scored three goals. The demand to put the ball in the back of the net from the strikers that has to improve." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7dc5/live/9069a3f0-70e8-11ee-aa1f-4fbe1e0fd531.jpgESPN senior football writer Mark Ogden feels Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may soon need to "drop" Marcus Rashford. Following a difficult win for the Red Devils at Sheffield United, Odgen believes Rashford is presenting a problem for Erik ten Hag. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, Ogden said: "There’s something not right about Rashford. He had a great burst after the World Cup last season and scored in every game for 12, 13 games. "But he plays in patches where he doesn’t contribute. It's an issue that Erik ten Hag has to address. Great Manchester United sides would never pass the ball sideways, they would always go for the attacking pass to put teams under pressure. "Players should have confidence, players should have drive, you don’t see any drive in United right now. Rashford should be carrying this team to victories and he's not. "Ten Hag may have to drop him. But the situation is he hasn't got the people in the squad capable of coming in for Rashford. Jadon Sancho looks like he’ll never play again, Hojlund is playing well through the middle, but beyond that what've you got?"

TUESDAY 24th OCTOBER 2023 - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - GROUP A - Manchester United v FC Copenhagen
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/81B1/production/_131510233_sergioreguilon.jpg
Defender Sergio Reguilon could be fit for Manchester United for their crucial Champions League game against FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Red Devils are struggling with injuries and have lost both of their Group A fixtures so far. Reguilon has recently recovered from injury but missed Saturday's win at Sheffield United because of illness. "Sergio got ill for Saturday so he was fit," Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag said. "He trained all week last week and yesterday [Sunday] he was back in part training. He will train [on Monday] and then we have to assess if he is ready and game fit or if he can be involved in the squad. We have to wait for that." Reguilon's return would be a boost for Manchester United, with midfielder Sofyan Amrabat having to play out of position to cover at left-back. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/1236/live/2ab9e700-719b-11ee-8e7d-652b30667635.jpg United to pay tribute to Bobby CharltonTuesday's game will be an emotional one as it will be United's first home game since club legend Sir Bobby Charlton's death was announced on Saturday. The club is yet to finalise the details of a planned tribute to the 1966 World Cup winner but the players will wear black armbands and there will be a minute's silence. "He is a huge inspiration for us every day." said Ten Hag. "He is in front of Old Trafford, with Denis Law and George Best [in the statue]. He is always with us. I am sure it will be even more a very emotional evening." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15794/production/_130665978_gettyimages-1593944759.jpg Rasmus set for family reunion with former sideThe game will also see striker Rasmus Hojlund face his younger twin brothers and former club. The Denmark international, who joined Manchester United from Serie A side Atalanta in the summer for £72m, has scored three goals for the Red Devils - in the Champions League defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray. He has enjoyed a rapid rise since leaving FC Copenhagen in January last year, having a spell at Sturm Graz before moving to Atalanta. His 18-year-old twin brothers, Emil and Oscar, are on the books at FC Copenhagen, with the latter expected to be in the squad to travel to Old Trafford. "You know it's a special game for him," Ten Hag said of Rasmus. "He grew up at the club and you know he will be highly motivated. It's for me, for the team but especially of course for him to use that in the right direction, the right balance." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/17DB9/production/_131512779_screenshot2023-10-23222443.png

Sir Bobby Charlton: Emotional scenes as Old Trafford honours Manchester United icon..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11A78/production/_131521327_wreath.png A wreath was placed on Sir Bobby's seat in the directors' box at Old TraffordManchester United's players wore black armbands while there was a minute's silence before the Champions League game with FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford in honour of legend Sir Bobby Charlton. On an emotional night, a wreath was placed on Sir Bobby's seat in the directors' box as United played at home for the first time since his passing. United boss Erik ten Hag, led by a lone piper, laid a wreath on the pitch. Charlton was also remembered on the cover the match programme. Before kick-off, two black and white images of the England 1966 World Cup winner looked down from the glass fronted main entrance at Old Trafford next to the words 'Sir Bobby Charlton 1937-2023 Forever Loved'. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/0908/production/_131521320_pipe.pngMany United fans, who were advised to arrive early for 20:00 BST kick-off, laid floral tributes outside the ground. Inside Old Trafford the stadium announcer urged supporters to take their seats well before kick-off as there would be a pre-match tribute to "one of the greatest players there has ever been". A banner read "Sir Bobby. Born in Ashington. Made in Manchester", while Copenhagen fans joined in chants of "One Bobby Charlton". Ten Hag walked onto the pitch with Alex Stepney, a former team-mate of Sir Bobby's, and Under-21 captain Dan Gore, before laying a wreath and taking part in a minute's silence. The trio had been led out by piper Terry Carr, while away supporters unveiled a banner that read "Passion is what separates the good from the great. Rest in peace Sir Bobby Charlton."

Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana. "Those players, Harry Maguire played a good game and Andre Onana as well. He made an important save just after half-time. "A poor first-half, but we stayed calm and in the second-half we stepped up and made more chances than them. It was a narrow escape in the end." On Christian Eriksen coming on: "Very important, Christian is always positive. He brings football and we did not have the football in the first-half - Copenhagen are well organised and you have to break them. Christian Eriksen makes the right passes." On team balance: "Of course every time we have to change the back line, if you look back to last year we had a very good back four and so consistent, with Casemiro in front all the time we controlled the ball. "This season every time we have had to swap the back four and then the routines go away and the midfield opens up, and we struggle to get the right balance. "We have seen games this season where we have not had good possession and we lose control in midfield. But, I am sure when we get the routines back in the back four it gives the team a foundation to play off." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/dd5c/live/cba402e0-72b3-11ee-9dbc-bb19b52bbb60.jpgHarry Maguire speaking to TNT Sports after the game: "Incredible. We have got to be more clinical, we had numerous counter-attacks and we didn't give them a chance in the second-half. "The first-half was really poor, it was not perfect but an important win. This man [Andre Onana] stepped up and it was a massive save." On the win being for Sir Bobby Charlton: "Definitely, it was meant to be. We were meant to win the game, a magnificent save and a win dedicated to Sir Bobby and his family. "It has been a tough week for us away at Sheffield United and losing someone like Sir Bobby, it affects the cub and the dressing room. But really pleased we could get the win tonight." On the fans singing his name: "It is amazing. When you are not on your game it gets picked up, but I am really proud and pleased how I have acted over this six to 12 months. "I have been given an opportunity and I want to help the team and get the club back to where it should be." Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana on TNT Sports: "I'm just doing my job, the most important thing is to win against a tough team. "I am happy for the victory, we did a good game and a big goal from Harry [Maguire]. "We are Manchester United. We are a big club, big players. It's just a matter of time, now we have to continue like this. I have no doubt we will make it." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/12FF4/production/_131521877_onana.jpg

Jadon Sancho, 23, may be allowed to leave Manchester United on a "long-term loan" in January with the England winger's former club Borussia Dortmund leading the chase. However, Sancho is unlikely to return to Dortmund in January and instead it is Italian side Juventus who could offer an escape route.

Manchester United and Liverpool have been watching Spain defender Robin le Normand, 26, and could move to sign him from Real Sociedad next year. Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City are continuing to monitor Michael Kayode despite the Italian right-back, 19, signing a new contract at Fiorentina.

United forward Garnacho, 19, put the emojis with a photo of him and Onana celebrating the Cameroonian saving an injury-time penalty against Copenhagen. "People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what [Garnacho] meant: power and strength," Onana wrote on Instagram. "This matter should go no further." Argentina international Garnacho published the post after Onana's save from the spot secured a vital 1-0 win on Tuesday which breathed new life into United's Champions League campaign. The Football Association (FA) is aware of the social media post and has asked for Garnacho's observations.

Sir Bobby Charlton: Manchester United and England great was 'tower of strength', says Sir Alex Ferguson..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article11324017.ece/ALTERNATES/n310p/Premiership-Title-1994.jpgSir Alex Ferguson described Sir Bobby Charlton as a "tower of strength" in a tribute to the England and Manchester United legend. Charlton, a key figure in England's 1966 World Cup victory, died at the age of 86 earlier this month. Those at Old Trafford for the Manchester derby on Sunday paid tribute to Charlton with a moment of applause. Former United manager Ferguson said Charlton was "the greatest English player of all time". After his playing career, Charlton served as a director and ambassador for Manchester United and remained a prominent figure throughout Ferguson's trophy-filled 26-year reign as manager, which began in 1986. In a eulogy in the matchday programme for Sunday's derby, Ferguson reflected on his "personal connection" with Charlton. "The directors came to meet me in Glasgow and asked what my vision was for the job. I said I would take the same approach I had at Aberdeen, by looking to build up the whole club, not just the team, and that I would do that by developing young players," Ferguson wrote. "As I was explaining this, I saw Bobby nudge one of the other directors and he said, 'that's what we want'. He'd made his mind up. From that moment on he was a tower of strength for me." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8472/production/_131560933_gettyimages-1763351872.jpgManchester United fans paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton with a banner before the Manchester derbyBobby won 106 caps for England and scored 49 international goals - both records for his country at the time. During a 17-year first-team career with United he won three league titles, a European Cup and an FA Cup. "People loved him because of all those thunderbolt goals, but it was more than that," Ferguson added. "My dad used to say that humility in success is a sign of greatness, and that was Bobby. "He never used to boast about his own achievements - it was always about the team and the club." Bobby's death came soon after Ferguson's wife, Lady Cathy, died aged 84. Ferguson said: "I am so sorry for Lady Norma [Charlton], who was always by Bobby's side, especially as his health declined, and my thoughts have been with the whole family these past few days. "Unfortunately, I have also suffered the painful loss of my beloved wife, Cathy, this month, and I want to thank the club, the fans and everyone who has sent me their condolences." A tribute was laid in the centre circle on the pitch at Old Trafford before kick-off on Sunday, reading 'Sir Bobby Charlton - forever loved'. Former team-mates and City opponents of Charlton joined the players on the pitch as a poignant moment of applause was held. Supporters also held up tributes in the stands, with one describing Charlton as 'the finest English footballer the world has ever seen'. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D3C8/production/_131561245_gettyimages-1763350262.jpg Fans held up cards to create a mural in remembrance of Sir Bobby Charlton
