Man armed with knife shot dead by police in Derby.
A man with a knife has died after being shot by armed officers outside a police station in Derby.
Derbyshire Constabulary said armed officers were sent to Ascot Drive and a police firearm was discharged at 10:03 BST.
The force said the incident was not being treated as terror-related but an investigation was continuing.
The man, whose identity is unknown, was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Deputy Chief Constable of Derbyshire Constabulary, Kate Meynell, said: "It is not believed to be linked to counter-terrorism at this time, however inquiries are ongoing.
"The male's identity is currently unknown, but I can confirm he's a white man and we're working to establish who he is."
The force said officers were sent to the scene after a man was seen with a knife in the secure car park of the police station.
A window was smashed before a weapon was fired with officers giving first aid to the man until paramedics arrived.
Witnesses saw an air ambulance land near the scene.
Derbyshire Police has informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the death.
Eyewitness Mark Baxter said he heard six gunshots and saw a police officer with a gun standing over a man on the ground.
Mr Baxter, who works at Marilly Motors on nearby Pontefract Street, said: "There was a series of gunshots. Two sharp blasts, two shots afterwards, a brief delay and then two more shots.
"We came out to the back of Farmfoods and police were already on site.
"One of our customers came down and said somebody had been shot in the entrance to the police station and he was on the ground.
"We [went out] saw there was someone on the ground with a guy stood over him with a gun, police cars and they shut the road off."
Eyewitness Mick Lahel said: "I heard the gunshots and walked around to the front of Farmfoods.
"I looked right next door to the fire station [which shares the site] and I saw somebody lying on the floor… and I saw an armed policeman with a gun.
"I thought it was an explosion at first, I was waiting to see smoke but then heard sirens."

Three people are stabbed near Harrow underground station after teenagers seen 'with a machete'..
Three men have been stabbed near Harrow underground station during rush hour on Wednesday after teenagers were seen running with a machete, according to police.
Police said they received reports of a stabbing and were called to Harro on the Hill 'near the underground station and the bus station'.
Officers attended along with paramedics from London Ambulance Service, who found three males with stab wounds.
'Saw loads of teenagers running around in Harrow bus station with a machete,' said a bystander, according to Harrow Online.
Paramedics treated the men at the scene and took them to hospital.
The condition of two of the men is assessed as non-life threatening, the police said in a statement.
They did not release any information on the condition of the third victim.
We were called today (9th November) at 5:11pm to reports of an incident at Harrow on the Hill Station, Harrow,' said the London Ambulence Service.
'We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an incident response officer, an ambulance crew, a medic in a fast-response car, and an advanced paramedic. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.
'We treated a teenager at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority.'
Another male was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault and taken into custody.
The three men appear to have been injured in the underground station, and the MET are referring the case to British Transport Police.
A crime scene has been put in place while enquiries continue, the statement concluded.

US Walmart shooting: Employee kills six at Virginia supermarket..
An employee at a Walmart supermarket in the US state of Virginia has shot dead six people and injured four others, police say.
Officers were called to the scene after the gunman, who has not been named, opened fire on colleagues at the branch in Chesapeake.
He later turned the gun on himself and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The motive is still unknown. Police are not searching for anyone else in connection with the attack.
The first emergency call was made at 22:12 local time on Tuesday (03:12 GMT Wednesday) and officers arrived at the supermarket within two minutes.
They entered the building shortly after, and the scene was declared safe an hour later once it had been cleared and all the victims had been located.
Processing the crime scene would likely take several days, Police Chief Mark Solesky told a news conference on Wednesday, adding that the investigation was being carried out with the help of the FBI.
He did not identify the attacker, saying their family had not yet been informed.
An eyewitness - who was wearing a Walmart uniform - described what happened in footage that circulated on social media shortly after the attack.
He said he had left a staff room, which a colleague then entered before quickly opening fire. "Sadly we lost a few of our associates," he said.
One woman told WAVY-TV that her brother, a 20-year-old employee, was shot and wounded just 10 minutes after signing on for work.
But she said her sibling was able to talk to relatives and send texts - saying this was "comforting".
Another woman, Joetta Jeffery, told CNN that her mother had been inside the building when the attack took place, and had managed to send text messages.
Ms Jeffrey said her mother was not hurt but was in shock.
In a statement, Chesapeake Mayor Rick West - who was unable to attend Wednesday's news conference because of a Covid-19 diagnosis - said the city was "devastated" by the shooting.
"We're really shaken by the news," he said. "We will support each other throughout this time."
Walmart said it was "shocked at this tragic event" and was "working closely with law enforcement".
Mark Warner, a Democratic senator for the state of Virginia, tweeted that he was "sickened by reports of yet another mass shooting".
Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas, also a Democrat, added that she was "absolutely heartbroken".
She wrote on Twitter: "I will not rest until we find the solutions to end this gun violence epidemic in our country."
The shooting comes just days after a gunman opened fire at a LGBT nightclub in the US state of Colorado, killing five people and injuring 17 others.
And earlier this month, three American Football players were shot and killed at the University of Virginia.

Wallasey pub shooting: Two arrested after Elle Edwards killed on Christmas Eve..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/17306/production/_128128949_elleedwards-2.jpgA man and a woman have been arrested in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old who was shot at a Merseyside pub on Christmas Eve. Beautician Elle Edwards died in hospital after being shot in the head at the Lighthouse in Wallasey Village. Police said a 30-year-old man has been arrested in Tranmere on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. A 19-year-old woman from Rock Ferry has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, they added. Both suspects have been taken into custody and will be questioned by detectives. Four other people who were at the pub were also injured - one of those, a 28-year-old man from Beechwood in Wirral, is still receiving medical treatment, police said. Flowers and other tributes have been laid at the scene, including a note signed "mum and dad" which read: "To my beautiful Elle, you are the light of my life, you will never be gone." A heart-shaped plaque bearing a pink and green floral design read: "Special Daughter, the happiness you brought in your own special way, will be remembered with love each and every day." Merseyside Police believe Ms Edwards, who was also known as Ellie, was not the target of the attack. Detective Superintendent Sue Coombs described her death as a "cold-blooded shooting". "Elle's family are still having to come to terms with her tragic loss, and our specially trained family liaison officers are supporting them," she said on Monday evening. Several shots were fired at the entrance to the Lighthouse at about 23:50 GMT on Christmas Eve. The pub was packed with mainly young people. Ms Edwards was rushed to Arrowe Park Hospital where she was pronounced dead. One of Ms Edwards' friends, called Jess, said people initially thought they had heard fireworks when the shooting started. "But automatically everything just stopped and we had a feeling that something wasn't right," she told Sky News on Monday. She said she felt "numb" when she saw her friend on the floor, with people trying to help her. Police are appealing for more information, especially from those who were in the pub at the time of the shooting. "We are also appealing to motorists and residents in the area, who may have captured anything on Dashcam or CCTV to contact us and every bit of evidence is crucial to the investigation," Det Supt Coombs said.

British man Sean Patterson shot dead in Jamaica, police say..
A British man has died after being shot in Jamaica, police on the Caribbean island have said.
Sean Patterson, a personal trainer from west London, was found on Monday with gunshot wounds to his upper body and head in St James, officers said.
Jamaica Constabulary Force told PA news agency that witnesses heard "loud explosions".
Mr Patterson, 33, was transported to hospital, but could not be revived, the force said.
According to local media reports, he was approached by a man with a gun whilst he was standing in the pool deck at a villa in Bogue Hill around 11:45 local time (16:45 GMT) on Monday.
Officers from Montego Bay Police received reports that Mr Patterson was standing by the pool of the guest house.
A Foreign Office spokesperson said they were "supporting the family of a British man who died in Jamaica and are in contact with the local authorities".
Local media said a 34-year-old man has been taken into custody.
The Gleaner newspaper reported that 198 murders were recorded in St James last year.

Utah shooting: Eight relatives including five children found dead in home..
A family of eight - including five children - have been found shot dead inside a rural home in Enoch City, in the US state of Utah.
Officials did not disclose a motive for the shooting or the exact relationship between the family members.
Police found the bodies on Wednesday while conducting a welfare check at the property.
City manager Rob Dotson said the town of about 8,000 people was in shock.
"This community at this time is hurting. They're feeling loss, they're feeling pain and they have a lot of questions," Mr Dotson said in a video statement.
He added that the family was well-known in the town, and that police would release further information as the investigation continued.
Enoch City is a small agricultural town in the south-western part of the state, about 245 miles (394km) south of Salt Lake City.
The five children attended schools across the Iron County School District, which released a statement expressing its sorrow.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox tweeted his condolences for those affected by the "senseless violence".

Newport News: Boy aged six detained after shooting teacher in US..
A six-year-old boy has been detained by police after shooting a teacher in the US state of Virginia, officers say.
The shooting happened shortly after 14:00 local time (19:00 GMT) at Richneck Elementary School in the city of Newport News, Chief Steve Drew said.
It is unclear how the child obtained the gun, but Mr Drew said the incident was not "an accidental shooting".
The teacher - who has not been named and is said to be in her 30s - was left with life-threatening injuries.
She was taken to a local hospital and is being closely monitored by doctors. The incident took place in a first grade (ages six to seven) classroom after an altercation between the pair.
But Mr Drew emphasised that the shooting had been an isolated incident and stressed that officers "did not have a situation where someone was going around the school shooting".
Officials said that while the school - which has around 550 students - had metal detection facilities, students were checked at random and not every child was inspected.
Police declined to name the weapon used in the incident, but said the boy had used a handgun.
School District Head Dr George Parker said officials would "be looking at any instance that may have occurred that may have caused this incident".
"This is terrible, something like this should never occur," Dr Parker added. "We want to ensure nothing like this happens again."
He said the school would be closed on Monday, and pledged that students and parents would be offered support to help them deal with the traumatic event.
Mayor Phillip Jones - who took office just three days ago - said the shooting marked "a dark day for Newport News".
"We're going to learn from this and we're going to come back stronger," he told reporters.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said he had offered assistance to local officials, adding that his administration was "ready to help in any way we can".
"I am continuing to monitor the situation and am praying for the continued safety of all students and the community," he wrote on Twitter.
Newport News is a city of around 180,000 people and sits about 70 miles (112km) to the south of the state capital Richmond.

Without wishing to cause offence, I did think it read as Redneck Elementary School.

Christmas Eve pub shooting: Murder arrest over death of Elle Edwards..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/0E58/production/_128127630_elleedwards-nc.jpgA man has been arrested on suspicion of murder over the fatal shooting of a woman at a pub on Christmas Eve. Elle Edwards, 26, was shot outside The Lighthouse in Wallasey, Wirral, shortly before midnight on 24 December. Merseyside Police previously said she was not believed to have been the target of the shooting. The force said a 22-year-old man from Wirral had been arrested "following enquiries in mid-Wales". A 23-year-old woman, also from Wirral, has been held on suspicion of assisting an offender. Three people who were previously arrested over the shooting have since been released. Ms Edwards died from gunshot wounds to the head after several shots were fired towards the entrance of the pub. Four men were also injured, including a 28-year-old who was critically hurt. The force said his condition was no longer life-threatening. Opening Ms Edwards' inquest at Liverpool's Gerard Majella Courthouse on 5 January, coroner Anita Bhardwaj said the dental nurse and beautician had been a "beautiful young woman" who had a "bright future ahead" and her death was "tragic". The hearing was told Ms Edwards was pronounced dead at Arrowe Park Hospital on Christmas Day after being taken there from the pub. Paying tribute to her on social media, her younger sister Lucy described Ms Edwards as her "soulmate" who was "beautiful, inside and out". Det Supt Sue Coombs said the two new arrests brought the number held "in connection with the tragic death of Elle to five". She added that although extensive work was going on "from our dedicated teams" and a "great deal of intelligence" had been gathered, she still wanted "anyone who has information and has yet to come forward" to do so.
