Everton to make formal appeal to Premier League by Friday after 10-point deduction..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/ED99/production/_131852806_evefrton-amin.jpg Everton fans held anti-Premier League protests on SundayEverton will submit a formal appeal to the independent commission which handed them an unprecedented 10-point Premier League deduction by Friday's deadline. The Toffees received the biggest sporting sanction in Premier League history after being found to have breached financial rules. The club admitted the breach but said they were "shocked and disappointed" at the severity of the punishment. The appeal will be heard and concluded before the end of this season. The club have not been told how the figure of 10 points was reached by the independent commission which decided the sanction, and feel a sporting penalty for a breach of accounting is unjust. The appeal will go before a judicial panel which will review the ruling of the commission, assessing the process and if, in their opinion, the penalty issued was fair or not. The points deduction dropped Everton from 14th in the Premier League table to 19th, in the relegation zone and now five points adrift of safety. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/9F79/production/_131852804_everton-index2.jpgEverton's case relates to interest payments on the building of the club's new £760m stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, which they believe were permissible 'add backs' for profit and sustainability calculations in the 2021-22 financial year. But the commission disagreed and did not accept the club's claim of mitigating factors such as compliance with the Premier League process over the past two years, the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, which resulted in the loss of the lucrative USM sponsorship, and the impact of the Covid pandemic on the transfer market. Sources have pointed to Sheffield Wednesday receiving a 12-point deduction three years ago for a "much clearer breach" on spending rules over the sale of their Hillsborough Stadium, with that sanction being halved on appeal. Everton may face further financial concerns with possible compensation claims from five clubs including Nottingham Forest, Leicester and Southampton. Burnley and Leeds dropped the threat of legal action over the Toffees' finances in July 2022 after being advised that profit and sustainability rules had been complied with. But this may be revived after a ruling from David Phillips KC in May in which he said he was "satisfied that the applicant clubs have potential claims for compensation". Clubs have 28 days from the date of this month's ruling to decide if they want to pursue a claim. Sports lawyer Chris Farnell told BBC Radio 5 Live: "When the chair of the committee's wording said relegated clubs 'have' potential ground for compensation, it was very telling. He didn't say they 'may have', he was clear. "The door has been left widely open so I expect those relegated clubs from last season to chase this." Thousands of Everton fans held anti-Premier League protests before Sunday's 3-0 loss against Manchester United over the scale of the punishment. Meanwhile, a number of regional politicians have raised concerns about Everton being docked 10 points. Mayor for Greater Manchester Andy Burnham, an Everton season ticket-holder, has written a letter to Premier League chair Alison Brittain calling for the punishment to be declared "null and void". The Mayor of Liverpool Steve Rotheram has written to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters saying he "completely supports" the club's appeal. Labour MP for West Derby Ian Byrne tabled an early day motion (EDM) in the House of Commons calling Everton's punishment "grossly unfair".

THURSDAY 7th DECEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Everton 3 (McNeil 79, Doucouré 86, Gomes Betuncal 90+6) Newcastle United 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B513/production/_131955364_mcneil-main.jpg Dwight McNeil scored his second goal of the season for EvertonEverton scored three times in the final 11 minutes of a hectic encounter to beat Newcastle and move out of the Premier League's relegation zone. The Toffees were sent tumbling into the bottom three by their 10-point deduction for breaking the top flight's financial rules, but moved back into safety thanks to late goals from Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and summer signing Beto. The hosts punished a pair of mistakes from Kieran Trippier, the first coming as McNeil pounced on a poor touch, drove forward and thumped a deflected effort into the net, before Doucoure coolly slotted home seven minutes later. Beto then ran clear during 10 minutes of stoppage time and slid home his first league goal to make sure of the points as the home supporters wildly celebrated a deserved victory. Before the late flurry, the Blues looked to be heading for a miserable night in front of goal having spurned a number of good chances in the opening period. The returning Dominic Calvert-Lewin was unable to convert the best of those, controlling Jarrad Branthwaite's flick on onto his chest and volleying over from four yards out. Newcastle had openings in the first half too but Trippier's free-kick and Miguel Almiron's scuffed effort after darting through were both kept out by Jordan Pickford. In the second half the returning Anthony Gordon, who was jeered by the home supporters throughout the game following his January transfer to Newcastle, should have silenced the Goodison crowd when he picked off James Tarkowski's loose touch on the edge of the area but only stuck a low shot straight at Pickford. Those three late goals mean the Toffees claw themselves out of the drop zone by leapfrogging Luton into 17th place, while Newcastle remain seventh behind Manchester United. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/1937/production/_131955460_everton-followup.jpg

Everton scoreboard responded to poverty chanting in Chelsea game with foodbank advert..By Shamoon Hafez,BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CB77/production/_131978025_dobbin-main.jpgEverton will continue to advertise charity foodbanks on the Goodison Park scoreboard as a direct response to opposition fans' 'poverty chanting', after it was praised on social media this weekend. Following similar chanting during the previous matches against Manchester United and Newcastle at Goodison Park, Everton had engaged with the fans' advisory board and fans' forum to discuss what could be done. In a planned move, it was decided the message of 'fans supporting foodbanks' would be displayed on the big screen inside the stadium whenever the chants - such as "Feed the Scousers" and "sign on" - were heard in Sunday's Premier League match against Chelsea. They are songs specifically aimed at Everton and Liverpool fans by rival supporters mocking Merseysiders around the theme of unemployment. In total, the message flashed up three times during Everton's 2-0 win over Chelsea - the first coming after just 34 seconds - and the club said this will continue throughout the season. Fans Supporting Foodbanks is a joint initiative by Everton fan group Blue Union and Liverpool's Spirit of Shankly in the city and Everton said on social media it was "proud" of the "vital" work being done in their communities. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/7D57/production/_131978023_everton-index.jpgFans Supporting Foodbanks said: "A club and its fan base standing together as one. It's not big or smart to chant about poverty and food insecurity." Goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin gave the Toffees the victory and after the opening goal, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said: "Delighted Everton have gone in front after the nonsense getting sung by the Chelsea fans." Natalie Smith, an Everton fan from Liverpool who was at the match, told the BBC's Newsbeat program: "I thought it was brilliant by Everton Football Club to put the picture up. I think the right way to respond to it was to raise awareness." The move was backed by other fans in the city too. Dan Morgan, a Liverpool fan, said he had experienced the "very dated, very unfunny, very boring" chants following his team "in stadiums up and down the country". "I don't think it's something you can just say is just fair game in terms of tribalism and how supporters communicate to each other," he added. "It's really sad to hear the chants on Thursday from the Newcastle supporters and then hearing it again on Sunday from the Chelsea supporters," said Liverpool West Derby MP and Fans Supporting Foodbanks campaign co-founder Ian Byrne. "We've been going for eight years now, and we've done lots of work with Newcastle and Chelsea fans. It's not as if those supporters aren't living in areas where they're seeing the cost of living crisis in their communities. "It was extremely disappointing to hear, but I thought Everton's response was phenomenal."

Here are some of your comments:
Everton fans
Jonny: If we can keep this form up, Sean Dyche should be appointed manager of the season! If it was not for the points deduction, we would be sitting hoping for Europe. Anyhow, for the first time since Carlo Ancelotti, it looks like we're playing an attractive Evertonian style of football. Can't wait for next year and maybe a push for Europe! Kevin: Everton produced another good defensive display snuffing out the relentless forward play of Chelsea but let themselves down by giving the ball away too easily which resulted in more pressure. Two great strikes though and I am absolutely made up for Lewis Dobbin. Chelsea played well for no reward. Andy: It’s been a long time since we’ve looked this good. Having an identity as a club and a style of play that works for our players is paying off. Dyche deserves high praise for the job he’s done. Patrick: Very impressive win again. Dyche deserves so much credit for this turnaround. Club was in total chaos when he came in, had to sell players last summer to get cash in. Doing an amazing job with a team of battlers who also have plenty of talent.

Everton: Club confirms move to new stadium in 2025-26 season..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12E90/production/_132065477_gettyimages-1824354715-1.jpg Building work on Everton's new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock began in August 2021Everton's move to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock has been confirmed to be the start of the 2025-26 season. The Toffees had kept option to move in during the 2024-25 campaign open, but that will now be the final full season at Goodison Park instead. The decision not to move mid-season was driven by commercial and logistical reasons, and supporter feedback. The Merseyside club say the 52,888-capacity stadium remains on schedule to be completed by the end of 2024. "Firstly, and to be absolutely clear, our decision to not move in mid-season is not because of a construction delay," said interim chief executive Colin Chong. "It is a club decision driven by a combination of commercial insight, a comprehensive review of the logistics required, an analysis of the potential impact upon our football operations and, importantly, fan feedback sourced as part of our recent stadium migration survey." Everton added there will be a series of events to mark their departure from Goodison Park, their home since 1892, throughout the 2024-25 season. The club has been deducted 10 points from the Premier League after an independent commission found Everton's losses to 2021-22 amounted to £124.5m, with English top-flight clubs only permitted to lose £105m over three years. Everton believe interest payments on money borrowed to build the club's new £760m stadium at Bramley Moore Dock were permissible 'add backs' for profit and sustainability calculations in the 2021-22 financial year. But the commission disagreed and did not accept the club's claim of mitigating factors such as compliance with the Premier League process over the past two years. Everton are the only current top-flight club to be building a new stadium. Costs for the project have increased from £500m to £760m.

SATURDAY 16th DECEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Burnley 0 Everton 2 (Onana 19, Keane 25)

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E049/production/_132071475_onana-main.jpg Amadou Onana scored his second goal of the season, with his other one also coming against Burnley in the Carabao CupManager Sean Dyche enjoyed a winning return to Burnley as his in-form Everton side picked up their fourth consecutive Premier League victory. Dyche was in charge at Turf Moor for almost 10 years before being sacked last year, and there was no room for sentiment as his Toffees team ruthlessly moved seven points clear of the relegation zone. James Trafford made a superb save to keep out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's header, but Amadou Onana leapt above the Burnley goalkeeper from the resulting corner to nod in the opener from Dwight McNeil's delivery. The visitors doubled their lead after 25 minutes as Michael Keane stroked in at the second attempt after his initial effort was saved by Trafford and Dara O'Shea failed to clear the rebound. Burnley looked to threaten in the second half as Zeki Amdouni forced Jordan Pickford into a fine save at full stretch and Sander Berge rattled the crossbar, but a bleak season continues as the Clarets remain second bottom and are now six points adrift of safety. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/9EA9/production/_132071604_everton3.jpg

Here are some of the top comments:
Everton fans
Blue: On any other day Everton would have come away with a draw here. The shock of the two early goals made it a difficult task. Richarlison was always going to score and he did. It was nice seeing Gomes back in the team after so long and I'm pleased for him that he scored. Hopefully we will see more of him, a quality player who did exactly what was asked of him. A good effort today. Jeff: It's a mystery to me why Dyche keeps on starting Calvert-Lewin instead of Beto, and why he waited until the 79th minute to bring him on when we went into half-time already 2-0 down is a mystery too. Mark: A reasonable performance which, with a bit of luck, could have resulted in a point. However, we’ve got to remember where we’ve been the last couple of seasons before being too hard on ourselves. Our main problem is that, like it or not, we will always be compared with our neighbours and, in all honesty, we will always come up worse. Rich: This was a far cry from the Toffees of last season when heads would drop after going two goals down. The spirit right to the end, chasing players down, and pressing to the very last minute gives more than just hope for the rest of the season. A performance that makes you proud to be a Blue.

Here's what you had to say:
Paul: Still remember George Wood throwing snowballs at the Everton fans during the first half at Bolton's Burnden Park on New Year's Day in 1979. The match eventually got abandoned at half-time due to the snow. Ian: Boxing Day 1977 Goodison Park v Manchester United was a 6-2 defeat. Not a great memory to be honest other than for the fact I took my younger brother to the game. He was a United fan due to a cousin's influence. What made it memorable was the sheer delight on his face when United won. (He was only 10 and he still reminds me off the scoreline). Still has the strip he wore! Peter: Boxing Day 1962 v Arsenal. Called off when heavy snow fell. It was the start of the 'Big Freeze'. Chris: I remember being there on Boxing Day in 1983 as one of 13,000 fans watching a 0-0 draw with Sunderland! Who would have thought less than six months later we would go on to win the FA Cup! upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/7c/Everton_FC_logo.svg/200px-Everton_FC_logo.svg.png

Best January signings in Premier League history - Seamus Coleman - Sligo Rovers to Everton - £60,000ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/3/ed5148c3-64e3-4807-98e5-c5c961085aea.jpgWhen Everton announced in January 2009 that they had signed a right-back from the League of Ireland for £60,000, few paid much notice. But little did we know that Seamus Coleman would have such a major impact. The 35-year-old has struggled with injury this term, featuring just twice in the league, but has amassed 411 appearances across all competitions during his time at Goodison Park. That works out at a pretty decent £146 per game! OK, Everton haven't lifted a trophy during his stint on Merseyside but it's still pretty good business and credit has to go to the scouts at the club.

The 26-year-old was dismissed for the first time in his career in the 0-0 FA Cup third-round draw at Selhurst Park. He had his studs up in a challenge with Nathaniel Clyne and clipped the Palace defender's shin with minimal contact. "The slow motion shows a different picture," said Dyche. "If you want to slow-mo everything, you have to slow-mo everything. There's minor contact and in live time he [referee Chris Kavanagh] doesn't give anything, then they slow it down and everything looks worse." Kavanagh originally took no action but reviewed the incident on the monitor following an intervention from VAR Michael Salisbury before showing Calvert-Lewin the red card in the 79th minute. "I have no clue what that [monitor] is there for," added Dyche. "Every fan must be going 'what is the point?' We all know the outcome, they are going to agree with everything they're being told. "The chance of having something turned over is miniscule so why even bother? "I'm a fan [of VAR] but we're all aware it needs tidying up. I thought it was getting tidied up but it seems to have stepped back a little bit. I remain a fan, but it is beginning to test my patience."

The 26-year-old striker faces a three-game ban after being dismissed for the first time in his career. He had his studs up in a challenge with Nathaniel Clyne and clipped the Palace defender's shin with minimal contact. Everton say they have "notified the Football Association" of their decision to appeal. Here are some of your responses:
Everton fans
Will: One of the most ridiculous red cards I have ever seen. He was hardly moving and only went down to improve his chances of controlling the ball. All of the replays suggested it was nothing, but one freeze-frame used made it look more cynical than it was. Let's look at the positives and see it as an opportunity for Beto to prove himself. David: A gritty and hard-working performance, especially when down to 10 men. It was a big improvement after the Wolves match. I hope we appeal Dominic Calvert-Lewin's unjustified red card. Steve: Another good performance, but in an attacking sense very poor. It's easy to say, but if we had Liverpool's forwards we would be in the top six! The sending off was again officiated from miles away - what is the point of a referee on the pitch who gets his head turned by slow motion? Rest time now. Maybe it will unearth a forward within the squad... Jeff: The red card is a total and utter disgrace. Nobody appealed so who decided to re-referee the game? Everton must appeal against the decision. Otherwise, a game between two mediocre, mid-table teams. Another example of how poorly VAR is being used and how incompetent the officials really are.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin: Everton successful in appeal against red card against Crystal Palace..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/4/d2a4f515-0273-4956-bf4a-19f26f316fe6.jpgEverton have been successful in their appeal against the red card shown to Dominic Calvert-Lewin in their FA Cup third-round draw at Crystal Palace. The striker, 26, was facing a three-match ban for a challenge on Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne which led to the first red card of his career. But the Football Association (FA) has overturned the dismissal and Calvert-Lewin can return to action immediately. The Blues next host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday at 2pm. Referee Chris Kavanagh originally took no action but reviewed the incident on the pitchside monitor following an intervention from video assistant referee (VAR) Michael Salisbury before showing Calvert-Lewin the red card in the 79th minute. "I have no clue what that [monitor] is there for," said Everton manager Sean Dyche following the game. "Every fan must be going 'what is the point?' Peter Johnson: Former Tranmere Rovers owner and Everton chairman dies aged 84..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12761/production/_132271657_shutterstock_editorial_8475656c.jpg Former Tranmere Rovers owner Peter Johnson sold the club in 2014Former Tranmere Rovers owner and Everton chairman Peter Johnson has died at the age of 84. Johnson took Tranmere out of administration in 1987 before the Birkenhead-born businessman bought a controlling stake in Everton in 1994. The Goodison Park club beat Manchester United to win the FA Cup in 1995 during his time in charge. Johnson then sold his shares to Bill Kenwright late in 1998 and returned to Tranmere. The club went on to reach the second-tier play-offs on three occasions, as well as making the League Cup final in 2000. Johnson went on to sell the club to former Football Association chief Mark Palios and his wife Nicola in 2014. Tranmere offered their condolences to Johnson's family, while Everton said they were "deeply saddened" to learn of his death. "Without his intervention in the 1980s, there may well literally not have been a Tranmere Rovers today," Palios said. "Everyone who loves the club owes him an enormous debt of gratitude and I will miss him hugely. Thank you for everything Peter, and God speed."

In the first goalless draw in manager Unai Emery's 97 top-flight games with Arsenal and Villa, his side could not produce the decisive moment to enable them to overhaul Manchester City and move into second place. Villa thought they had taken a first-half lead when Alex Moreno rifled a 25-yard finish past Everton keeper Jordan Pickford but the goal was ruled out for offside after a four-minute video assistant referee (VAR) check. Everton had chances of their own before the break but the struggling Dominic Calvert-Lewin could not beat Emi Martinez after racing clear, the Villa keeper then producing a superb save from James Garner. Villa pressed after the interval, with Jhon Duran coming close, but this very poor game eventually fizzled out into a draw. Everton remain 17th, one point above the relegation zone. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2C38/production/_132302311_seamus.pngEverton fans held up a banner in honour of long-serving defender Seamus Coleman before the game with Aston Villa

Everton boss Sean Dyche unaware of possible new financial charges..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A67C/production/_132302624_seandyche.jpgEverton boss Sean Dyche says is he unaware if the club are facing a new charge regarding an alleged breach of the Premier League's financial rules. Reports suggest Everton and Nottingham Forest will learn on Monday whether they have been charged with breaking profit and sustainability rules in accounts submitted last month. Everton are appealing against a 10-point deduction from a previous charge. "You don't know until you know," Dyche said. "The last time, the news came out of the blue. I'll explain further if and when the news comes through." Under the profitability and sustainability regulations, clubs can lose a maximum of £105m over a three-season period, or £35m per campaign, before facing sanctions. Clubs that breach those limits are at risk of a fine or a points deduction. Everton received an immediate 10-point deduction in November after an independent commission found the club's losses to 2021-22 amounted to £124.5m. The punishment is the biggest sporting sanction in the Premier League's history. Everton's appeal is due to be heard before the end of this season.
