Everton: 'Mismanagement on a grand scale at Goodison Park'..By Phil McNulty, Chief football writer.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0BE3/production/_132334030_gettyimages-1925216838.jpg Everton manager Sean Dyche guided the team to Premier League safety on the last day of last seasonA familiar scene unfolded at Goodison Park on Sunday when the Premier League anthem rang out before Everton faced Aston Villa. The famous old stadium echoed to a storm of jeering while pink cards bearing the message that the Premier League was "corrupt" were held aloft by Everton supporters. This is all the result of Everton's fury and frustration at being docked 10 points after being referred to an independent commission by the Premier League for a breach of profit and sustainability regulations earlier this season. And the mood of resentment will grow even further with Monday's announcement that Everton have been referred once more by the Premier League for another alleged breach of financial regulations covering seasons 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23. Nottingham Forest have also been charged with a similar breach. Everton are currently in the process of appealing against the first sanction and, in an echo of that charge, made it immediately clear they will be defending their position robustly once more - but this is another unwanted distraction and a feeling of deja vu for manager Sean Dyche. The club's hope is they will get the 10-point punishment, at the very least, reduced - but the latest turn of events is another twist in a season that has almost been trauma on a loop. The club is fully focused on that appeal, with the expectation there will be a resolution by the end of February. The commission looking at the latest charge cannot meet until the first appeal has been concluded because the result could influence the outcome of the new commission. One of Everton's arguments is that overspend they are accused of is the result of loan repayment costs incurred as a result of building their new stadium on the banks of the River Mersey at Bramley Moore Dock. In other words, Everton believe they are also being punished for building a new stadium. However, many fans feel there has been mismanagement on a grand scale at Goodison Park under the reign of owner Farhad Moshiri and Everton's previous board, with more than half a billion pounds spent on pushing the club to the edge of the footballing and financial precipice. Everton survived relegation in last season's final game with home victory over Bournemouth, while it took a 3-2 win against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park in the penultimate game of the previous campaign to ensure safety. Ironically, the punishment imposed earlier this season united a club that had been broken in previous months, the fans' relationship with the hierarchy fractured to such an extent that Everton's board of directors' felt unable to attend matches at Goodison Park on safety advice from January 2023. The sense of injustice, warranted or not, and the belief the punishment is excessive and heavy-handed has acted as a unifying force. Since then, owner Moshiri has put a takeover deal in place - still awaiting approval - with United States investment firm 777 Partners, while former chairman Bill Kenwright died in October aged 78. Manager Dyche has often stated his job is to ignore "the noise" around off-the-field events and simply get results on the pitch. It is a task made harder by Monday's developments. Everton are currently one point outside the relegation places, one point ahead of Luton Town having played a game more, so cannot afford any further points sanctions. Dyche's team, in effect, wiped out that 10-point deduction with four straight Premier League wins but an indifferent run has made their position perilous once more. Everton will hope they can defend their position successfully at both the initial appeal and any subsequent commission - but there is no doubt the coming months will shape the very future of the club.

Everton points deduction: Appeal hearing to begin on Wednesday..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/802A/production/_132501823_everton-main.jpg Everton are currently 17th in the Premier League but would be 12th without their points deductionEverton's appeal hearing over their 10-point deduction for breaching financial rules will begin on Wednesday. The hearing in front of an appeal board is expected to last three days and BBC Sport understands an outcome should be revealed by mid-February. The club admitted the breach but said they were "shocked and disappointed" at the severity of the punishment. Everton were handed the biggest sporting sanction in Premier League history in November. The Toffees have not been told how the figure of 10 points was reached by the independent commission, which decided the sanction, and feel a sporting penalty for breaking financial limits is unjust. The appeal will go before a panel which will review the ruling of the commission, assessing the process and whether, in its opinion, the penalty issued was fair or not. Sean Dyche's side are facing another possible points deduction after they were charged with breaching rules for a second time earlier this month. Nottingham Forest were also sanctioned for alleged breaches of profit and sustainability rules in their accounts. Meanwhile, Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has been asked by MPs to clarify his remarks about Everton and Forest. Appearing before the Culture, Media and Sport Committee on 16th January, Masters used the term "small clubs" when answering a question about the two.

TUESDAY 30th JANUARY 2024 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Everton 0 Fulham 0ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/48EE/production/_132507681_1facd39b4553972adcca44dff9f8515bdc85b84c.jpgEverton dropped into the Premier League relegation zone despite clinging on for a hard-fought goalless draw at Fulham. Despite the scoreline there was no shortage of goalmouth action at Craven Cottage with both sides hitting the woodwork and having efforts cleared off the line. Everton endured both in a matter of seconds as James Tarkowski's scuffed shot flicked the head of Issa Diop and looped up to hit the crossbar. The ball then brushed Antonee Robinson and rolled back towards the goal, only for Timothy Castagne to poke it away in the nick of time. Castagne was on the receiving end of a goalline clearance later in the first half when his fierce shot was deflected past Jordan Pickford and Tarkowski was on hand to block. After a fairly even first half, Fulham dominated the second with Castagne's flicked header coming back off the bar and Pickford making a stunning save to keep out a Tosin Adarabioyo header that looked destined to find the net. Marco Silva's side kept their visitors penned inside their own half for much of the second period but failed to make the most of numerous promising situations and were nearly punished. Everton substitute Beto headed over from point-bank range in injury time and the Toffees were unable to force the ball home during a scramble on the edge of the Fulham six-yard box a minute later.

Saturday 3rd February 2024 - Premier League
Everton 2 (Harrison 30, Branthwaite 90+4) Tottenham Hotspur 2 (Richarlison 4, 41)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4C3A/production/_132541591_richarlison-main.jpg Richarlison has scored nine goals in his last eight games for Tottenham
Report By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport at Goodison Park.Jarrad Branthwaite scored a dramatic equaliser deep into injury time, following Richarlison's double, to salvage a Premier League point for Everton against Tottenham. The hosts looked to be heading for a deflating defeat but the despair turned to joy as defender Branthwaite converted at the back post in the 94th minute. A point momentarily takes the Toffees out of the relegation zone on goal difference, before Luton visit Newcastle later on Saturday. Before that late leveller, it looked like in-form Richarlison had returned to haunt his former side with a delightful double in front of the Gwladys Street End. It took the visitors just four minutes to prise open the Toffees backline as Destiny Udogie pulled the ball back for Richarlison to guide home a lovely volley from eight yards out, and after the hosts drew level, he curled in a sumptuous second from the edge of the box. Everton had improved in between those goals and Dominic Calvert-Lewin nodded over the crossbar before the striker's header from close range flicked in off Jack Harrison for the leveller. Sean Dyche's side went in search for another equaliser and substitute Youssef Chermiti came close late on before Branthwaite bundled in to bring much-needed relief - although only after a video assistant referee check confirmed there was no offside. "It's a great header, it's a brave header," said Dyche. "Who knows [with VAR] at the minute? I don't think anyone can make head or tail of it." Manager Sean Dyche said: "There are so many good things and so much character in the team. It shows even when we're stretched, young lads coming off the bench, there are good signs about what we are trying to achieve here amid all the adversity and all the noise."

The 36-year-old, who won 87 caps for Belgium and appeared at two World Cups, had ended his international career in 2019. Fellaini joined Everton from Standard Liege in 2008 and moved to United in 2013 before signing for Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng in 2019. "What an incredible journey it's been," said Fellaini in a social media post. "I am so grateful to have played the sport I love at the highest level." Fellaini said he was "proud" to have represented the clubs he had and that it was "an honour to have played for the Belgian national team at the Olympics of 2008, Euro 2016 and the World Cups of 2014 and 2018". He made 141 Premier League appearances for Everton, scoring 25 goals and registering 14 assists. Fellaini scored 22 goals in 177 appearances in all competitions for United, who he helped win the 2016 FA Cup as well as the Europa League and EFL Cup in 2017.

Everton: Toffees 'sick' of waiting - Alan Stubbs..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7887/live/349d29c0-cceb-11ee-8a7d-5f5aaf952428.jpgEverton fans are "sick" of their appeal over a 10-point deduction being "dragged on". That's the view of club legend Alan Stubbs as fans, players and anyone associated with the club await an outcome, which is expected soon. Speaking on a special episode of The Football News Show all about the Toffees, Stubbs said: "There was a lot of bewilderment from a lot of people within football and outside when the initial penalty of 10 points was given. "From Everton fans there was a lot of anger and animosity. Realistically we as Everton fans are sick of it. We're sick of how long it's getting dragged on. It's a prolonged process. "We were told it was going to be the middle of February, and then Wednesday or today, but there is still no news."

"Second half, they found a great goal out of a nothing moment and we responded very well to that. We were on the front foot, asking questions, creating chances in general play. "We looked a threat from set piece, which we finally scored from and I thought second half was a much better display." On nervy atmosphere: "Sometimes it's a mentality, the hardest fight to win is the one that everyone thinks you should. We've got to grow with that. "In my short time here and some of the players have been here a long time, the crowd do expect a lot but you've got to row towards that and there were signs in the second half that we did. "It was 'let's be braver in possession, ask more questions of the opposition'. We let in a bad goal from our point of view, goal from theirs, a clean strike but there was a lot of good in that second half. "Our mentality has been key the last few weeks and will be going forward." On Dominic Calvert-Lewin chances: "He's working hard at his game, he's getting stronger by the week in key areas. That's all I want to do is see him in key areas because the hardest thing to do is put it in the net. "He's delivering strong performances. First half wasn't right but the second half was much more what we should be." On appeal against points deduction: "I don't know the dates, we're just waiting. For the good of football, I think it needs to be speedier for everyone. "I don't think anyone wants them dragged out, whatever it's going to be, let's get on with. "It's not in my hands, though. Who knows [when we'll find out]."

Ex-Everton footballer Li Tie 'sentenced to life in prison' for match-fixing and £300k job bribe..By Nathan Ridley, Senior Sports Reporter.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32193086.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_GettyImages-1194708928.jpgFormer Everton player Li Tie has been sentenced to life in prison, according to reports in his native China. Li, 46, was embroiled in a corruption scandal after publicly admitting that he paid 3 million yuan (£330,000) in bribes in order to manage China's national team. Also in his televised confession on state broadcaster CCTV, the ex-defensive midfielder admitted to taking part in a match-fixing scandal which earned promotions for his club teams. One of the most talented Chinese players of his generation and capped 92 times by his country, Li made 33 appearances for Everton during a loan spell from boyhood side Liaoning in the 2002-03 season. He was then signed permanently by the Toffees in a £1.2million transfer deal and played seven matches the following campaign before breaking his leg on international duty in February 2004. This led to serious injury problems and despite signing a two-year contract with Sheffield United in 2006, Li only made one appearance for the Blades. He returned to China in 2008 and after retiring from playing three years later, Li embarked on a coaching career which has since been left in disgrace. The 46-year-old has admitted to successfully fixing matches while he was the head coach of Hebei China Fortune and later Wuhan Zall. The Wuhan-based side won promotion from China League One as champions in 2018. On Friday, reports from China emerged claiming that Li had been sentenced to life in prison, while the former head of the Chinese Football Association, Chen Xuyuan, will serve a 15-year term. Also, current vice-president Du Zhaocai has reportedly been handed a 13-year sentence. Last month, speaking on live television, Li said: "I'm very sorry. I should have kept my head to the ground and followed the right path. "There were certain things that at the time were common practices in football. By gaining 'success' through such improper means, it actually made me more and more impatient and eager for quick results. "In order to achieve good performance, I resorted to influencing referees, bribing opposing players and coaches, sometimes through clubs dealing with other club. This behaviour becomes a habit, and eventually, there is even a slight dependence on these practices." After Italian boss Marcello Lippi resigned in 2019, Li was appointed manager of the Chinese national team, initially on a caretaker basis before being given the job permanently. After two years in charge, he was replaced by 2002 World Cup teammate Li Xiaopeng. In November 2022, it was announced that ex-Everton player Li had been placed under investigation for 'serious violation of laws' by China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) and their anti-corruption agency. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32193084.ece/ALTERNATES/n310p/0_GettyImages-53323998.jpg i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32193083.ece/ALTERNATES/n310p/0_GettyImages-1052647456.jpg

Everton points deduction: Punishment reduced to six points after appeal..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/70f8/live/8161f200-d4ab-11ee-a5b0-3d48464c63ef.jpgEverton's punishment for breaching Premier League financial rules has been reduced from 10 points to six after an appeal. The club were immediately docked 10 points in November for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in the three-year period to 2021-22. The punishment - the biggest in Premier League history - took Everton from 14th to 19th in the table. The reduction in the ban lifts them from 17th to 15th. Everton, who admitted to the breach, said they are "satisfied" with the reduction. A Premier League statement read: "Everton FC appealed the sanction imposed against it on nine grounds, each of which related to the sanction rather than the fact of the breach." A three-person appeal board concluded that the independent commission which imposed the 10-point ban "made legal errors" on two grounds. It said the commission was "wrong" to punish Everton for being "less than frank" over what it told the Premier League about its new stadium debt. The appeal board also said the commission was "wrong not to take into account available benchmarks" and that a six-point sanction was "broadly in line" with English Football League guidelines. Everton are facing another possible points deduction after being charged with breaching rules for a second time in January, for the three seasons up until 2022-23. That case could not be heard until their appeal against the 10-point deduction was competed. Everton say they remain "fully committed to co-operating" with the Premier League over the second charge. English top-flight clubs are permitted to lose a maximum of £105m in a three-year spell, or £35m per season. Everton, who have not won in the league win since 16th December, are now five points clear of the relegation zone with 12 games remaining. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e6b0/live/691760e0-d4ab-11ee-8f28-259790e80bba.png

Richard: Good defensive display again, it seems it is the only way we can play. The fourth best defence in the league but fourth from bottom - it doesn’t make sense. Oh yeah! The 10-point deduction! Give us fans our points back. It’s football, not politics. Chris: 1-0 up against 10 men and we sat back instead of going for the kill. Typical Dyche football and got what we deserved! The loss of those two points could be vital at the end of the season. Mark: We really need to be earning more than draws. We are difficult to beat but struggling to score enough goals to win. Goals need to become more prevalent soon. Russ: Negative Dyche against 10 men. He does the opposite of what is needed every time. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/54e8/live/2432b7b0-d3e1-11ee-a415-71316478a5f4.jpg

Barry: Poor again from a team seemingly intent on being relegated. I seriously worry for my club. Unable to score, unable to win at home, poor squad depth, a manager seemingly out of ideas and a month of tough fixtures ahead. With further points to be deducted and ownership unresolved, we could be relegated and in administration come the end of the season. Russell: Very frustrating. We lack finishers up front and teams punish us for it. West Ham were good but beatable, but yet again we couldn't put a game to bed. Defence was strong but once we hit the final third, I just didn't feel confident in attack. Amadou Onana was sloppy and Jack Harrison is a headless chicken at times. Something has to change. Michael: We simply cannot hide behind the docked points. We have not won a Premier League game since mid December. We do not score goals and goals decide your fate. Sheffield United and Burnley are not good enough for Premier League - and sadly neither are we. Jon: Embarrassing. The four points back was a lifeline, but it means nothing now. We deserve to be relegated. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/ad4e/live/8da478e0-d8c4-11ee-bdc1-197cc955033f.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5a10/live/7eb4aa30-d8ba-11ee-af96-c1efa284166f.jpgJames Tarkowski hit the nail on the head with his post-match assessment of Everton's 3-1 home defeat to West Ham. "We didn't put the game to bed," Tarkowski lamented. "The penalty, four or five great opportunities, you get punished in this league." Hard for any Evertonian to argue with that? The Blues created enough chances to win the game but once again their failure to put the ball in the net proved costly. It's becoming a bit of a recurring theme for the Toffees this season. Beto did get his name on the scoresheet, having got the nod ahead of the misfiring Dominic Calvert-Lewin in attack, as he scored his second Premier League goal since his £30m move from Udinese last August. But in truth it was the chance he would have done well to miss. As for his miss penalty? The less said the better. Oh, for Everton to have a banker from the spot like Leighton Baines. It felt like a pivotal moment in the game that might cost the Blues, and so it proved.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/44fe/live/ce68b890-da37-11ee-9bc5-a55e5d4134b9.jpgAs Everton's players return to training on Monday, alongside Sean Dyche and his coaching staff, they'll sit through the film and analysis of the West Ham match. Not only will it make for painful viewing, but also deliver a huge sense of deja vu. It’s not the first game, and probably won’t be the last this season, where the theme of not taking your chances is the most obvious feedback. Despite their points tally having changed for the better following a successful deduction appeal, the on-field issues stay the same. They remain the worst team in the division when it comes to measuring efficiency against their expected goals (xG). Of the 29 Premier League goals scored, their xG - a statistic which measures the probability of a shot resulting in a goal - is 41.54. So, in theory - and I must stress this is based on data crunching - Everton should have scored 12 more goals (12.54 to be precise). This will be of no surprise to Everton fans, especially those at Goodison on Saturday, whose moans and groans were rooted in the anxiety which stems from witnessing the past two campaigns, where their league status was only assured in either the penultimate or final game of the season. Most worrying, though, and given their side could still face a further points deduction for breaking profit and sustainability rules, is how they measure up against those other teams who are still at risk of potential relegation. The reality is Everton, like everyone else, need as many points as possible from their remaining fixtures. It’s now 10 Premier league games without a win for Dyche - five on those being draws. While the courts may well eventually decide their fate, it could be their profligacy in front of goal, rather than defensive fragility, which could ultimately cost them top-flight status.

Everton pay tribute to club legend Jimmy Husband after he passed away aged 76..by Jeorge Bird.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/10/15/82277611-13179613-image-m-154_1710083613418.jpgEverton Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of 1969/70 League Championship winner Jimmy Husband. Jimmy, 76, died peacefully on Saturday following a short illness. Jimmy joined Everton in 1963, when the Blues were the reigning League Champions, and would score 55 goals in 199 first-team appearances. He was born in Newcastle on 15 October 1947 and was a much sought-after young footballer as he progressed through his teens. He played for England Schoolboys and had a choice of over a dozen clubs, including Aston Villa, Leeds United, Sunderland, Newcastle United, Middlesbrough, Burnley and Everton when he decided to turn professional. He picked Everton and made his debut away at Fulham on Easter Monday in April 1965. Legends like Gordon West, Brian Labone, Jimmy Gabriel and Johnny Morrisey were among his team-mates, while George Cohen, Bobby Robson, Rodney Marsh and Johnny Haynes were in the Fulham side. During his formative years at the club, Jimmy lived in digs in Tuebrook and at the end of the 1964/65 season he was part of the Everton team that won the FA Youth Cup for the very first time, defeating Arsenal in the two-legged final. His first senior goal came at Goodison Park in January 1967 when he netted in a 4-1 victory against Sheffield United. i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article28790890.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-78953350.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/10/15/82277607-13179613-image-a-152_1710083585075.jpgwww.toffeeweb.com/images/history/players/husband-car.jpg
