Ellis Simms: Coventry interested in signing Everton striker..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/90A7/production/_130313073_simms-main.jpgChampionship side Coventry City are interested in signing Everton striker Ellis Simms on a permanent deal. Simms spent the first half of last season on loan at Sunderland, scoring seven goals, and netted once in 11 games after returning in January. The academy product, 22, is reportedly valued at between £7m and £10m. Simms could replace striker Viktor Gyokeres at Coventry, with the Swede being linked with an £18.5m move to Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon. Gyokeres scored 23 goals last season as the Sky Blues were beaten by Luton in the Championship play-off final on penalties. Some Everton first-team players returned for pre-season training on Thursday, but Simms was not seen with the group amid talk of a move away. Tom Davies, Yerry Mina, Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic have all left after their contracts expired, while loan deals for Conor Coady and Ruben Vinagre have not been made permanent. Everton survived in the Premier League on the final day and the squad is undergoing an overhaul, with the acquisition of a striker a priority after the side scored only 34 goals in 38 games last season. In an interview with a local newspaper on Tuesday, Almeria chief executive Mohamed El Assy said the Toffees had made a bid for the La Liga side's 21-year-old frontman El Bilal Toure. The Mali international reportedly has a 40 million Euros (£34.3m) release clause, but BBC Sport understands El Assy's quotes about a formal offer from Everton are wide of the mark.

Dele Alli: Everton midfielder says he was sexually abused aged six..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/93A4/production/_130369773_gettyimages-1246700754.jpgEverton midfielder Dele Alli says he was sexually abused when he was six years old. In an emotional interview with former England footballer Gary Neville, Alli revealed the abuse he suffered as a child before he was adopted aged 12. He said he was "molested" aged six, started smoking aged seven and was dealing drugs at eight years old. Alli, 27, recently spent six weeks in rehab because of a sleeping pill addiction and mental health issues. One of football's brightest young talents, Alli was part of the England squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and helped Tottenham reach the Champions League final in 2019. However, his form dipped and he left Spurs to join Everton in February 2022 before going on a loan spell to Turkish side Besiktas last season. Alli, who earned the last of his 37 England caps in 2019, returned to Everton at the end of last season because of injury. "When I came back from Turkey, I found out I needed an operation and I was in a bad place mentally," he told The Overlap. "I decided to go to a modern day rehab facility for mental health. They deal with addiction, mental health and trauma. "I felt like it was time for me. With things like that, you can't be told to go there. You have to know and make the decision yourself or it's not going to work. I was caught in a bad cycle. I was relying on things that were doing me harm. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/4584/production/_130369771_gettyimages-1413415003.jpg"I was waking up every day and I was winning the fight going into training, smiling, showing that I was happy but inside I was definitely losing the battle. It was time for me to change it." Alli said he had come out of rehab three weeks ago and "could never have imagined how much" he would get from it as "a lot happened when I was younger that I could never understand and figure out" and it had helped him on that front. He later talked about being "molested" at six before being "sent to Africa to learn discipline". "At seven, I started smoking, eight I started dealing drugs," he added. "An older person told me that they wouldn't stop a kid on a bike, so I rode around with my football, and then underneath I'd have the drugs. That was eight. "Eleven, I was hung off a bridge by a guy from the next estate, a man. "Twelve, I was adopted - and from then, it was like - I was adopted by an amazing family like I said, I couldn't have asked for better people to do what they'd done for me. If God created people, it was them."

Ashley Young: Everton sign full-back on one-year deal..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/00D9/production/_130371200_young-main.jpg Ashley Young has made over 700 career appearances for club and countryEverton have signed free agent Ashley Young on a one-year deal after the full-back left Aston Villa this summer. Young, 38, becomes Everton's first signing under manager Sean Dyche and has joined the club on their pre-season training camp in Switzerland. BBC Sport understands Young had held talks with Luton, while there was also interest from Saudi Arabia. "I am delighted to be an Everton player and to have joined this massive club," former England player Young said. "I can't wait for the season to start and walking out at Goodison Park is going to be an unbelievable feeling and to hear the passionate fans behind me. "The manager was important in me signing. I know him and know what his passion and desire is like. His honesty, will to work hard and his hunger for the game is second to none." Former Burnley boss Dyche took over in January, replacing the sacked Frank Lampard, and guided the club to Premier League survival on the final day of the season. Dyche said: "Ashley is a top-class professional whose record of team and personal achievements during a successful career make him an excellent addition to our squad. "I've known Ashley for many years, having been his captain when he first broke through at Watford, and his qualities both on and off the pitch will prove valuable." Winger-turned-defender Young won the Europa League and League Cup with Manchester United and earned 39 England caps, playing in the 2018 World Cup semi-final defeat by Croatia. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/11B3B/production/_130370527_young-index.jpgYoung has played over 700 career games for club and country, including 32 appearances for Villa last season, and will provide experience to an Everton side that narrowly escaped relegation the past two seasons. Young added: "I know things haven't gone too well for Everton in the past couple of seasons but the manager's ambition, speaking to him and hearing what he wants to do to change the club around, was a key factor in my decision. "The other is the size of Everton. It's a massive club and the fanbase is one of the best. Having them behind me is a fantastic opportunity. "I've always said age is just a number for me. I feel as fit as I ever have done - even than when I was younger. Whenever the manager calls upon me, I'm going to be fit and ready to go." On Monday, the Toffees travelled to Switzerland for a five-day training camp in the Alps where they will face second-division side Stade Nyonnais on Friday.

Arnaut Danjuma: Everton sign Villarreal winger on season-long loan..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/01C1/production/_130494400_gettyimages-1564850702.jpg Arnaut Danjuma has 23 made Premier League appearances with Bournemouth and Tottenham HotspurEverton have completed the signing of winger Arnaut Danjuma on a season-long loan from Villarreal. The Netherlands forward agreed terms with the Toffees in January, but joined Tottenham after they made a late move. The 26-year-old made nine appearances for Spurs before returning to Spain at the end of the season. Danjuma said he did not move to Merseyside in January because of uncertainty over the managerial situation. Frank Lampard was sacked as Everton boss on 23 January and Sean Dyche appointed seven days later, one day before the transfer window closed. Danjuma is Dyche's second signing as Everton manager, after full-back Ashley Young, as the Blues look to avoid another relegation battle. "I think it makes it even more beautiful for me to join now," Danjuma said. "I had interest from other clubs but there was a pull towards Everton because of the fans, the manager and the history of the club. "It is second time lucky for me." Danjuma has six caps for the Netherlands and was a key member of the Villarreal side beaten by Liverpool in the 2021-22 Champions League semi-finals. This will be his third spell in the English top flight after signing for Bournemouth in 2019 and leaving for La Liga in 2021. The Toffees begin their Premier League campaign at home to Fulham on Saturday, 12th August.

Sean Dyche: Everton manager says club have missed out on transfer targets..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14274/production/_130584528_dyche-main.jpg Everton needed an injury-time Amadou Onana goal to beat Stoke on SaturdayEverton are "working hard" to make new signings for their squad but have missed out on transfer targets this summer, says manager Sean Dyche. The Toffees are yet to make a permanent acquisition but have brought in full-back Ashley Young on a free transfer and winger Arnaut Danjuma on loan. The Blues are unbeaten in pre-season but have netted only four goals in four games against lower league opponents. Dyche said the lack of goals from his team is "always a concern". Everton escaped relegation on the final day of last season by edging to a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth but scored only 34 goals in 38 league games. Injury-prone Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggled to stay fit and managed just two goals all campaign while fellow striker Neal Maupay has netted only once in his past 40 league and cup appearances. The need for a new striker has been evident but they suffered a blow in their pursuit of long-term target El Bilal Toure, who opted to join Serie A side Atalanta from Almeria. BBC Sport understands there is a mild interest in Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho, though no approach has yet been made. In the build-up to the new season, Everton have defeated Swiss second division side Stade Nyonnais 2-1 and beaten League One Wigan 1-0, before a goalless draw at Bolton. They needed an injury-time Amadou Onana goal to beat Championship side Stoke 1-0 on Saturday, after which the 2,900 travelling supporters ironically chanted: "We're gonna win the league." Everton have financial concerns and are set to go before an independent commission in October for alleged breach of the Premier League's Financial Fair Play rules. Dyche, meanwhile, may have to bring in further temporary solutions with the need to operate on a tight budget at Goodison Park. "It's a tough market," he said. "There is only so much that we can do, so we are working very hard - I can assure everyone of that - to construct deals that can work. "There is no exact moment until it's over the line. There have been situations where we have been into where we thought we were going to get it over the line and we don't - that's the way it goes. "A lack of goals is always a concern because you need to score to win games. We showed in the second half of the season that we needed to find different ways of scoring goals and we are going to have to do that going forwards. That is part of football." Everton complete their pre-season schedule when they welcome Sporting Lisbon to Goodison Park on Saturday 5th August, beginning their Premier League campaign a week later by hosting Fulham.

The 26-year-old striker has struggled with a range of injury problems during the past two seasons. In the 2022-23 campaign he scored two goals in 17 Premier League appearances. "It's been a vicious cycle of rushing back, with an expectation on me to be back and not being allowed time to get 100% fit," Calvert-Lewin said. "The manager [Sean Dyche] came in and said, 'You're not coming back until you are fully fit'. When I come back, I am not a passenger, I have a job to do leading the line. "He has shown patience, deflecting all attention that is always put on me about 'when he's back?'. He took that load off me. "It was almost like factory reset when the season finished. It was like, 'What can we do differently, what's going wrong?'." The peak of Calvert-Lewin's scoring career for Everton came in 2020-21 when he hit 16 goals in 33 Premier League games. Calvert-Lewin has played 45 minutes in each of Everton's last two pre-season friendlies having declared himself "over" his injury problems thanks to a fitness programme, including yoga, which has strengthened his overall mobility. The England international should be in contention to face Fulham in Everton's opening Premier League fixture of the season on Saturday. Calvert-Lewin added on BBC Radio Merseyside: "I am still on my journey of becoming a better player and I feel like my best has not been seen yet, even though I have hit good levels so far. "When you can't physically do that and perform on a regular basis, it is the most frustrating thing in the world. "It's a mental battle when you are getting injured all the time. When you are on the pitch you are probably not fully committing as you feel something might go wrong. "I am over that now and in a good space of mind to go and attack the season."

Youssef Chermiti: Everton sign Sporting Lisbon striker in £15m deal..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A692/production/_130724624_gettyimages-1607169829.jpg Chermiti has represented Portugal at under-19 levelEverton have signed teenage striker Youssef Chermiti from Sporting Lisbon on a four-year deal for £15m. The 19-year-old Portuguese forward broke through at Sporting last season, scoring three league goals and making 22 appearances in all competitions. Now the task of showing he can be a finisher in the Premier League awaits the talented youngster. "I couldn't turn down this opportunity - it's a big moment and I'm fully focused to get to work," said Chermiti. Everton begin their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Goodison Park on Saturday. "It's a big move for me. Joining Everton is a new beginning, a new page and I'm very happy to be here. It is a beautiful city and a beautiful club," Chermiti added. "I have new goals now. I'm here and I want to do my best for Everton. I want to help the team. I hope the fans will like me and I want to show them what I am capable of." Chermiti becomes the Toffees' third signing following the arrivals of full-back Ashley Young from Aston Villa and winger Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal. Everton avoided relegation on the final day of last season with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth but were evidently missing a striker. Injury-prone Dominic Calvert-Lewin managed just two goals all campaign, while fellow striker Neal Maupay has netted only once in his past 40 league and cup appearances. Manager Sean Dyche said after Everton maintained their Premier League status that things would need to change but admitted they had missed out on some signings in the summer transfer window. "Youssef is a talented young striker who can add a different dimension to our squad," said Dyche. "He is still a teenager who is learning his game, which we will be mindful of, but we think he has the raw talent and ingredients to be a very good player and that's why we are pleased to have signed him for Everton." Wolves and Bournemouth had also expressed interest in youngster Chermiti. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/5872/production/_130724622_gettyimages-1607169872.jpg

Neal Maupay: Everton condemn social media abuse of striker..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/982E/production/_130785983_maupay-main2.jpg Neal Maupay joined Everton from Brighton last summerEverton have condemned the social media abuse suffered by striker Neal Maupay following Saturday's Premier League defeat by Fulham at Goodison Park. Maupay missed several chances in the 1-0 loss and later posted a screenshot of the abuse he received on Instagram. "This is what I get for not scoring. No one should ever deal with this," he wrote. "We stand firmly against such behaviour and are investigating the accounts that have targeted Neal," said Everton. Visitors Fulham added their support for the player, saying: "We stand with Neal Maupay and support Everton's message to report, condemn and highlight such abuse." Asked about Maupay's performance after the game, Dyche told BBC Sport: "I want all players to get in the right areas and Neal did. You have to keep getting there to score goals. "Eventually, if you create that many chances and keep doing it relentlessly, you will score goals and win games. That is what I have learned in my life in football." Maupay added in his social media post: "Gutted about the result today, we tried our best it wasn't enough." And team-mate Idrissa Gueye posted a message of support for Maupay, saying: "We win together and lose together. We all know the hard worker that you are." Everton added: "Everton Football Club condemns all forms of personal abuse directed towards our players and their families or any club staff on social media. "We encourage anyone using these platforms to report, condemn and highlight any such abuse to the social media platforms on which it appears. "Discrimination and hate has no place in our game." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/22FE/production/_130785980_maupay-2.jpg

Worker dies at Everton's new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium site..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/3DA3/production/_130797751_mediaitem130795673.jpgA worker has died after being injured at Everton's new football stadium which is being built in Liverpool. The 26-year-old was taken to hospital after being hurt at about 12:30 BST on the construction site at Bramley-Moore Dock, Merseyside Police said. The force said the man's family had been informed and it was working with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Everton said everyone at the club was "heartbroken" and sent condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Work has been suspended at the site until further notice, stadium contractor Laing O'Rourke said, adding it had been "shocked and saddened" by the "tragic incident". 'Unimaginably sad'It added: "We can confirm that earlier today a member of our team, who was carrying out work for one of our sub-contractors, was seriously injured in an incident. "He was taken to hospital via ambulance, where he sadly died. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased man and our wider project team." The HSE said it was "on-site" making inquiries. Laing O'Rourke said it would "cooperate fully with any investigation". A statement from the football club said: "Everyone at Everton Football Club is heartbroken by the news a male worker has died following an incident at the Everton Stadium site at Bramley-Moore Dock. "The thoughts and condolences of everyone connected with Everton are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this unimaginably sad time." The new ground on the banks of the River Mersey is expected to be completed in late 2024, after which the club will leave their current home at Goodison Park, which opened in 1892.

Che Adams: Everton in talks to sign Southampton striker..By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B89C/production/_110606274_cheadams2.jpgEverton are in talks to sign Scotland striker Che Adams from Championship side Southampton for £12m. Adams, 27, scored 25 Premier League goals in four seasons for the Saints before their relegation in May and has two goals in three games this term. Everton scored only 34 goals in 38 top-flight games last season and finished in 17th place as they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day. He would become Sean Dyche's fifth summer signing. The Toffees has so far brought in Ashley Young, Arnaut Danjuma, Jack Harrison and teenage striker Youssef Chermiti from Sporting Lisbon. But manager Dyche said the 19-year-old Portugal youth international "needs to get properly, Premier League fit" and would be surprised if he is "ready straight away". Despite their restricted budget, Everton were intent on bringing in another frontman in addition to Chermiti, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin not fit and Neal Maupay struggling to find the net. Everton were also interested in signing Adams' team-mate Kamaldeen Sulemana but the move looks unlikely as they are finding it difficult to agree terms with Southampton. Meanwhile, Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto remains of interest. Everton have so far had two bids rejected for the 19-year-old and have informed Leeds how much they are willing to pay for the Italy international. Gnonto is refusing to play for Leeds, where he faces internal disciplinary action; he is now training away from their first-team squad. Manager Daniel Farke re-iterated their stance that Gnonto is not for sale and does not have a relegation release clause in his contract.

Sean Dyche: Sky Sports apologises for 'insensitive' comments about Everton manager's clothes..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1579E/production/_130866978_dyche1.jpg Sean Dyche was wearing a black armband in memory of Michael Jones, who died while working on Everton's new stadiumSky Sports has apologised for "insensitive" comments made about Everton manager Sean Dyche during the 4-0 defeat by Aston Villa on Sunday. Commentators Bill Leslie and Andy Hinchcliffe said his clothing made him look like a "croupier" - someone who oversees gaming tables at casinos. Dyche was wearing a black armband in memory of Michael Jones, who died working on the club's new stadium. A Sky spokesperson apologised for any "upset or distress caused". "Comments made during the Aston Villa v Everton game were insensitive and regrettable," they added. "We have spoken to everyone involved in the coverage including both the commentators and have reminded them of their responsibilities and the need for care and sensitivity." Both Leslie and former Everton defender Hinchcliffe have expressed regret at their comments. Construction worker Jones, 26, was fatally injured last week at the Bramley-Moore Dock development, which Everton are yet to confirm a move-in date for. Players and coaching staff wore black armbands, tribute banners were displayed and supporters applauded in the 26th minute at Villa Park in memory of lifelong Everton fan Jones. Jurgen Klopp took his Liverpool squad to lay flowers at the site near the River Mersey before their Premier League match with Bournemouth on Saturday. Heads and dick may spring to mind....
