For Rovers - Nigel Martyn. Or if an outfield player Mickey Barrett. For the opposition - Craig Bellamy. - Funny thing is, until that game we played against West Ham I hadn't thought much of Craig Bellamy. He must have been coming to the end of his playing days, and still ran the show. Always wanted to be on the ball. Picking it up from the back 4 and then being at the centre of things when they were attacking - a real box to box performance. It wasn't until I saw him play live that I appreciated how good he was. The rest of the West Ham team seemed average and he was the difference between the sides. To think he played in our schoolboy sides! - I was going to say a fella who scored a fantastic hat-trick against us at The Mem (10 years ago or so?), and we gave him a standing ovation as he was substituted. A few years later he signed for City, but never really got a chance there. Can't remember his name, nor the team he was playing for at the time. But it was an absolutely scintillating performance, and I'd be surprised if he had as good a game again. Good call on Bellamy for that game Concept, remember it well, it was late in his career but he still had incredible energy, he was absolutely everywhere.

Best player for Rovers was Barry Hayles - based on my recollection. The thing which set him apart was that he made so many of his goals through skill and strength. And I just liked his rise up the pyramid. I don't think we truly saw the best of Astafjevs since none of his teammates were on the same wavelength.
Best player against Rovers was either Lua Lua - he always had us for breakfast or I remember a game at Twerton v Birmingham where Kevin Francis was just unplayable (but that's my memory maybe playing tricks). I also remember when Ismael Miller absolutely owned us when we played West Brom in the cup. The best player I have seen play against Rovers was Edgar Davids but he wasn't at his best.

Barry Hayles for us and Craig Hignett for Barnsley, with an honourable mention to Ismael Miller for West Brom.

Haha! Did'nt George dance around our defence and comfortably score? I seem to remember that. can recall being there. was a larger than expected crowd,20,000 was it? and thought there was more excitement watching stuff going on on the River behind us!!! Playerwise, i though Ball and Cooper were the best i could remember for us, ans as mentioned previous a young Paul Mariner full of eagerness ans everthing that took him to the highest level When David Williams was running midfield and playing the through balls, incredible and exciting, I am adding Paul Randall to that era though and Martin Thomas only just surpassed by Nigel Martyn between the sticks.

Best Rovers player I ever saw was Geoff Bradford. Best players playing against us were Alan Sunderland ( Wolves 5-1 ) Craig Bellamy ( West Ham League cup ) Mcmanaman ( Liverpool Cup replay ) and possibly Ken Wagstaffe ( Mansfield Town.

Couple of other honourable mentions - Stuart Pearce for Forest, 2-0 League Cup 92ish. And Jan Molby, both games against the Gas in the FA Cup. Over-weight, never even jogged. Rarely moved outside of the centre circle. But seemed to run the game from there with an unbelievable first touch and vision. As for Rovers. Toughie. Barry Hayles or Rickie Lambert. Or Jason Roberts. This thread is a pleasant diversion.

Peter Reid was pretty damn good when Man City came to Twerton. Barely broke sweat and none of our players got near him. My son asked why Rovers fans were booing him. "Because he's too bloody good for us" was my reply.

The best own goal i've ever seen.

Best player I’ve seen v us was George Best, undoubtedly. I’d also give a mention to the Stoke City midfielders in the League Cup quarter final in November 1971. Was a youngster and can’t remember their names probably Hudson and Conroy but they absolutely destroyed us that evening at Eastville. They were brilliant, sadly.
The best for us, got to be Nigel Martin or Rickie Lambert or Mabbutt on the basis that they played for England. I’d go for Mabbutt. But to choose from players who spent their careers largely with us I’d go for Harold Jarman with an honourable mention for Alfie Biggs.
UTG!

Perhaps in some ways a bit like Grealish. Back then in the 70s players like him and Tony Curry took an awful lot of stick physically. UTG!

Must have been Conroy and Eastham then. Whoever, they were brilliant that night. I arrived full of optimism that night and tbh we never had a sniff. Still think it was one of the best team performances against us I’ve seen even after all these years. UTG!
