Haha! Did'nt George dance around our defence and comfortably score? I seem to remember that. He sure did Bas, after 71 seconds ha ha, now that’s a way to debut!, 25,000 at the Cottage that day!. Fantastic entrance! I was'nt there, but I think it made the 9 O'clock news.

can recall being there. was a larger than expected crowd,20,000 was it? and thought there was more excitement watching stuff going on on the River behind us!!! Indeed, many Gasheads ejected that day for over exuberance, most came back in by shining along the Thames wall and climbing back into the ground, I know, I was one of them!. i think that the police thought there would be some big trouble that day, there were a big travelling group from rovers that day,but thought it was a bit of an excitable crowd because of the George Best appearance and nothing else

The police that day were ‘spotting’ the crowd and anybody showing any emotion was targeted and hoisted from the ground, the coach I travelled up on was half full before half time, ha ha.

Steve Kindon playing for Wolves at Eastville. He totally destroyed us when they won 5-1.
Also Stan Collymore at Twerton where he made Steve Yates look like a snail.

I remember having to duck some bricks that were being lobbed in to the tote from Wolves fans up on the old embankment just to make the afternoon an even worse experience.

He sure did 02, his debut for Fulham, League 2, Saturday 4th Sept 1976, Fulham team also had, Rodney Marsh, Bobby Moore, Viv Busby and a few more high profile players. I was sixteen, loved it and have never forgot it. them were the days!. Haha! Did'nt George dance around our defence and comfortably score? I seem to remember that. Fulham beat us that day 04.09.1976 1-0, but in the return game at home on 12.02.1977 we beat them 2-1, George Best played in both games.

I saw Collymore do the same at the Gate with Forest, picked the ball up on the left half way and just cut through like a knife through butter, banged it in the corner. A trademark goal for him. 4-1 I seem to remember.

Anyone remember playing Wycombe at Twerton with Martin O'Neill dancing around on the side.
1-1 I think, a late leveller, maybe even an own goal, they had Terry Evans at the back who was 6ft 5, and a pub player at best.
Great thread.

Best for... Astafjevs, his vision.....he once played a brilliant through ball that when it bounced, it vertically held up (like a backspin) away at Wycombe, I was in awe....no one could keep up with his skill. (Surely the best has to be Bradford or Dix?) Best against... Steve McManamon away to Liverpool. Unplayable. I think jocky is still spinning!? (Surely the best has to be George Best? ....if he did play against us?) Was Steve Cross emergency left back in replay. Pool worked this out and everything was going to Macmanaman 2nd half.

I had my brothers tell me of that night, many times over and i was listening on the radio.

1.Geoff Bradford. 2.Alfie Biggs for PNE at Eastville when he scored a thirty yarder against us but pleased to say he returned after one season.
