My first was a 0-4 home defeat to Grimsby in 1997 on a freezing Tuesday night in front of less than 5,000 I think. It was my Dad's first Rovers game for about 15 years. I thought it was absolutely terrific so I came back for the game the next Saturday and we beat Bournemouth 5-3.

My Dad followed City, but not closely (wise man) so I had to be Rovers. The stand out early game for me, having been before but forgotten which, was the 0-3 loss to Arsenal with over 35 000 in the crowd. We played 2-3-5, how things have changed, with the likes of Harold Jarman and Alfie Biggs up front; we also played badly! Even earlier I remember being on my dad's shoulders watching the Harlem Globetrotters with an impromptu basketball court on the pitch in front of the North Stand. Did we ever have half time boards with the letters? yes, can clearly remember the halftime scores on thoses boards, trouble was often it was nearly 4.30 by the time you found out the ht score, which by then had changed, so not much use really, oh for a moblie in 75 Thanks clockend, I was vague about my first game, but I do have some recollection of boards but I could have been confused with other grounds I visited. Anyone know when the boards were stopped, I've looked for photos in vain?

Ashamed to say I have no idea!! I was a late starter and it was at Twerton in 88....
I did watch second half of Rovers v City in 84 from the hard shoulder of the M32....faked a breakdown. It got a bit feisty at the end when City fans were kept back so proceeded to kick their way out of the ground

The letter scoreboards in front of the Tote End. I'm trying to remember but I guess they would have had to put the scores on both sides?
Then a decade or so later you would have a big group following one person with a portable radio, out of the ground, and down the street, trying to listen in on the scores.
Back to the car and with James Alexander Gordon you could try to guess the away teams score by the inflection in his voice.

It's not going to be long before some idiot BBC executive changes the music Out of the Blue for some modern crappy stuff. The presenter already talks over the tune after two bars (of music that is, not pubs) and the way in which the results are delivered now is so so poor - there is no gravitas, presence or feeling, and you are right the inflection did help with the away result, it now sounds more like reading the measures for a recipe (please no sexisim howls because none was intended.)

Octoberish 1993 - 4-3 last minute win over Bradford. 6 second half goals, Stewart Hat Trick (2 from the spot). All been downhill ever since really. That was a spectacular game to watch live. I was on the Popular Side and the atmosphere was electric. Has to be one of the biggest emotional rollercoaster of a game I've been to. Must have been epic for a first game. Did you go home thinking it would be like that every week?

Did you go home thinking it would be like that every week? You're absolutely right - it's been a massive problem for me. There's just no way that on a week by week basis I can ever top that first game! We were 1-0 down at half time as well - absolutely no inkling of the chaos to come. Weirdly I've had a massive soft spot for Bradford ever since. I was 10 - things I remember are; -The swearing, even though I was in the family enclosure (I've always loved the concept of a family enclosure - 'Oh Timmy look at that perfectly formed example of a typical lower middle class British Family, isn't it sweet - they're having dinner, the mum and dad are having a passive aggressive argument over whose turn it is to take the bin out and the 2 kids are stairing at the their I-Phones and refusing to eat their vegetables or engage in meaningful conversation.....whatever you do try not to distrub them by mentioning houseprices or laylandi hedges'). -The smell - I don't know if smoking was still allowed on the terraces back then but I remember the smell distinctly anyway. -The noise - that was a barnstorming game and the place was rocking come the end. The only one I can remembe that was similar from that time was last 20 minute comeback from 2-0 down to beat Oxford a year later. That was probably my all time favourite memory of Twerton. -Lee Archer - for ever in my mind as a superstar on the wing.
