1st April 1967 (no sniggering please) vs Peterborough at Eastville. The Baron was playing I think. Went with about 3 friends. We wore rosettes too and had a huge wooden rattle which we were too self-conscious to use ! Age: 14. If only I knew then what I know now..........
Am trying to see a game at all the grounds of the clubs who were in the League in 1966/1967 season. About 63 visited to far. The aim is to visit Peterboro for number 92. UTG

April 1967,home to Peterborough,I was 9,went with my grandad, stood at the Muller road end. I remember thinking how old Alex Munro looked ( because he was bald),and thinking that Peterboroughs colours were red ,I didn't realise it was there away kit, also Doug Hillard taking the goal kicks ? can that be right ?. I didn't realise the Southampton 76 crowd was that low,Saints brought loads it was Easter Saturday ( we had played city the day before) and they were cup finalists a couple of weeks later..I think that Andrew Evans injury was the next season, the game after the 9-0 at Spurs ?. That match was my first one too (1st April 1967). We stood on the South Stand terrace, near the Tote End. 1-1.

April 1974 v Oldham. We lost 2-1. My sister's boyfriend at the time, a bloke called Bob Gain took me. We stood on the open end, so I assume segregation was still not quite in place then.

When I think of the clubs that we used to play then,Stockport,Southport,Barrow,Workington, and a few more I realise that things could have been much worse for Rovers.

Ah, slight differences discovered ! I've just added mine up and it comes to 58 grounds visited, sorry about the error. My head is still spinning from Mattie T's hat-trick. Also, I've seen 58 first X1 matches at these grounds, but not all of them featuring the Gas (eg Man U vs Bayern M in the CL semis !!). So you are ahead of me on two counts. Keep it up ! Nice to have the 1st Apr 67 prog too - a good idea I might adopt. UTG

I have been told I went to games before this, but the first game I remember is on 29th April 1967 (thanks Definitive History) verses QPR. We won 2-1 thanks to 2 goals from Alfie. I was 7 years old and was taken by my elder brother and his mates. Can't remember much about it apart from we went in the North Enclosure. UTG

1968, aged 5. A midweek game V either Tramere or Doncaster. I had someone actually look it up but I can't remember. I know it was Rovers V Rovers and the away team had Ted shirts with white trim. We then played in solid blue with white trim. My Dad and one of my brothers took me and we sat in the north stand. I was so excited as I a,ways adored going anywhere with my Dad and any of my brothers. Am pretty sure Bobby Jones scored. Those were the days my friend. I remember we used to have a fair few matches Vs Aston Villa in those days and there was always a good crowd when we played them

We stood on the open end, so I assume segregation was still not quite in place then. i was there age 13, game was on match of the day i think as table topper I also watched that one from the Muller Road end. On Match of the Day, with Rovers losing, Barry Davies spotted some people departing before the final whistle. His commentary went along the lines: "there are some Bristol Rovers fans leaving early. They don't deserve to be champions". He later clarified in the Evening Post / Green 'Un that he was referring only to those who left, not all Rovers fans. My first game was in the 1969-70 season, the 3-0 win against Luton Town on Tuesday February 10th. It was an evening match, so the dazzling floodlights brought out the vivid green of the pitch and blue and white of the players to this seven year-old observer. Goals were by Graydon, Ford and Munro, the latter two scoring from the penalty spot. I remember Carl Gilbert had a "perfectly good" goal disallowed, thus establishing my lifelong readiness to criticise officials!

Which should have been mine probably. As it was Rovers v Swindon, pre-season friendly 1973 -2-2. Loved it, sat in south stand with my Dad who muttered 'what the frick have I done' at the end as I stated I would be on the Tote for the rest of the season....

I don't remember much else about the game, except that Oldham played in orange, and they had Andy Lochhead playing for them.

1972 - lost at home to York City (2-1).Remember very little about the game except the noise, smell of cigar smoke and standing on some sort of structure to be able to see.
Went with my Dad, dearly mourned Grandfather and a friend of the family. Dad is a sheedhead but as with many folk at that time, they would go and watch both teams. It was always Rovers for me though - not sure why but perhaps because they were perennial underdogs to City. Think my Gramphy also had more of a soft spot for Rovers so he always encouraged me in this. I think I also persuaded them at the time to let my first match be Rovers rather than City.

My Dad followed City, but not closely (wise man) so I had to be Rovers. The stand out early game for me, having been before but forgotten which, was the 0-3 loss to Arsenal with over 35 000 in the crowd. We played 2-3-5, how things have changed, with the likes of Harold Jarman and Alfie Biggs up front; we also played badly!
Even earlier I remember being on my dad's shoulders watching the Harlem Globetrotters with an impromptu basketball court on the pitch in front of the North Stand.
Did we ever have half time boards with the letters?

Did we ever have half time boards with the letters? we did, the code was in the programme 1963 Vs Colchester we won 3-1 and that was that. I was at that Arsenal game and didn't think we played that badly. Alfie set up Dick Plumb (as I recall) and he missed which might have got us back into the game. But the gap was huge not unexpectedly.

And as it was the only day it would be all the results so you could here a valid league table then study it in the Green Un. These days can be still leaving the ground at 5 o'clock.
