A workmate in my past who went to football in the 50's & 60's said to me once.."in my youth it was not uncommon for a lot of bristolians to go to eastville one saturday and ashton the next"...how times change over the years. Does anyone know anyone who still goes to both Rovers and City? I know John Atyeo was a regular at the Mem and Ashton until his death in 1993 Not trying to be a smartarse but was he a rugby fan then?

A workmate in my past who went to football in the 50's & 60's said to me once.. "in my youth it was not uncommon for a lot of bristolians to go to eastville one saturday and ashton the next"...how times change over the years. This is very true, well in my experience it is at least. In the 1950s and early 1960s my father always went to Trashton one week and Eastville the next, and as a child I went with him. His only motivation was to watch a game of football, and relax after a weeks work. He didn't favour City above Rovers, or vice versa, and he would always finish off the afternoon by getting a copy of both the Pink 'Un and the Green 'Un which he would read from front page to back page . . . and then back again. By way of explanation there was no television at that time, only the radio, and the winter evenings could be very long. The clue here is entertainment. It wasn't until much later that this poisonous atmosphere came into existence between the two clubs. Even when the other mob coined the expression Gasheads, I've never believed that it was intended to be particularly derogatory, just an attempt by them at alternative humour. And we responded in typical fashion by describing them as S***heads. But the point is that in the meantime times had changed, we were no longer in the late 1950s but the late 1960s, and society had changed quite fundamentally . . . and not only football neither. But in my mind they have always been more obsessed with BRFC and its supporters than we were with B*FC, and this is the nub of the problem. Anyway they lost this afternoon, didn't they?

I often used to see John Atyeo queuing at the turnstiles at Twerton, and a proper gent he was too. I used to think that it was a shame that BRFC couldn't make some arrangements for him. But the point is that only a real football fan would bother to pitch up to Twerton, I always wondered if he ever went to Trashton.

Atyeo used to sit by us in the stand at Twerton, chatting to him one time my dad asked him if he went down Ashton,he replied that city at that time made him pay to get in so he didn't bother and we gave him complimentary tickets. He was a very nice man

It really is hard to believe that they asked him to pay, isn't it? But I wouldn't doubt it for one moment, clearly Harry Dolman was no longer around. I am pleased that we gave him complimentary admission though, as he really was a giant of the game when I was a lot younger, and the other mob had an awful lot to be grateful for where he was concerned. Mind you at that time you were allowed a sneaking regard for your close rivals, unlike today.

Two and a half hours of very positive publicity for the rivals today and a reasonable performance on national TV. Not good.

Ok Performance I would say, don't think West Ham got out first gear to work up a sweat and still won today. The s#it lost again on national tv.
Really like us to concentrate on ourselves. Like most Gasheads gutted about stadium situation but things looking good on the pitch for first time in a while, hopefully it remains so, plenty of games left to get the points to catch Barnet.

I refuse to take part in that OTIB thread anymore. I stopped opening it about 3 months back.
That's silly now and I would agree.
I used to have an intense dislike of BRFC. I grew up in Fishponds and Downend as one of probably 4-5 City fans at best in the whole school.
The 1990 day at school ranks as one of the worst of my life. Fk me there was kids I didn't even know liked football coming up to me. Still at least the 4 of us hung together. It was like a scene from Zulu....
I do miss the rivalry in all honesty. Bristol Rovers have become so irrelevant to us (like we have to you) because we never compete against each other any more. Also gasheads have married into my family (Dad and myself will never fully accept them of course) and it's all a bit different.
Nonetheless someday we shall meet again and maybe we'll renew it. But now I find myself concentrated on us and also think it'd be good for Bristol if you sorted yourself out and returned to the league.

I think he died before we actually moved back to Bristol.

When you watch the 2nd of may goals again, they were both lovely finishes. If it had been anyone else they would be called cool, calm finishes, but because dev looked so awkward he never got the credit he deserved.

Banter - i half believed you until you said you went to school definitely stopped believing you when you suggested you knew your dad.
