Each to their own and all that. I'd rather like us to approach the Port Vale manager and see if he fancies joining us. I think he probably feels more at home working for the Port Vale owners who are ordinary people that have had to work hard to make their money in the same way that Darrell was essentially an ordinary footballer who had to work hard to make a decent career for himself as a player and manager. The essence of the problem we have at Rovers is that Wael never had to earn his money so doesn’t appreciate its true value and Barton was blessed with natural footballing ability but lacked the self discipline needed to fulfill his potential and has never worked hard enough on addressing that failing. Port Vale were the League 2 Club that stood to lose most at the end of the 'points per game' season. But they didn't contest the decision because it was in the best interests of the wider game. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52680382Respect. Dignity. Pride. 3 words I associate with Port Vale. 3 words that I cannot possibly associate with Bristol Rovers. Carol Shanahan, take a bow. Wael Al-Qadi, hang your head in shame.

Before kick-off Radio Bristol had an interview with Lee Brown. When Keith Brookman phoned him up to see if he was free Lee said he was in Subway at the time and would they like him to get anything! On to the interview, and naturally the D&R game came up. It was as if Browner's voice went a bit wobbly going back to it, and describing what happened. I started to get goosebumps again, just hearing about the game, and remembering the day. We'll always have that day. I doubt we will ever have such a dramatic end to a season again. But I can always say I was there, I experienced it, and no one can take that away. Absolutely. In 50 years of watching professional sports, Brown`s goal was the single most exciting moment for me

DC's 2016-17 squad - the team for our first season back in league one - included HARRISON, TAYLOR, EASTER, LUKE JAMES, GAFFNEY and BODIN.
we scored goals (Luke james didn't) and looked fluid in attack. We had options.
We had more than 3 strikers in the entire squad.
Going back to emperor's mention of TOM NICHOLS - with the benefit of hindsight, I might have played him behind the main striker (s) in more of an oztumer role. Still, it's water under the bridge now. He's playing up top for Crawley and has scored plenty.
Surely - if nothing else - joey will spot that we need more than 3 strikers in the whole squad???
However, we can have all the strikers we want but won't win games unless we start to impose ourselves in midfield and develop patterns of play. This will lead to us creating GOOD chances and not the half-hearted ones we've seen for so long.
Gc's remark after Ipswich that "I I don't know how far I can take this team" has again resonated in the last few days. Was he refused the chance to strengthen in that particular forthcoming January window? I wasnt keen on the football we played under him, but - to his credit- he got results with what he had available. Surely that's what management is about in any profession? He was also fiercely defensive of the players, which isn't what we're seeing from JB.
My general hope is that JB will add some experience in defence; ensure we have midfield generals to break up play properly and get a foot on the ball; and sign at least 2 strikers with proven league two pedigree.
What we can be certain of is that we're heading into the new season with yet another new squad. Whereas the likes of , hmm PORT VALE for example, will probably be building on what they already have.

Kroenke has slowly strangled the life out of one club, Wael is doing something very similar to the other.

I don't know if your analogy between K and W stands up, it makes too many assumptions, but could be true. What can we do as fans? Withdraw support?

Kroenke will keep that club starved of what it needs to succeed, he doesn't care that it was amongst Europe's elite clubs when he arrived, empty seats and empty tills is all he'll understand. Wael running out of money is, I think, what's going to draw his time here to a conclusion. So if you want to hurry that along, don't give him any money.

Poor decisions and grateful for them are different things. But.....if Wael has the money to secure his way out of trouble (however trouble is perceived), whom am I to say spend it this way or that? It's so easy to spend other people's money....

Almost certainly empty this empty that won't work.....the boycott cup a good example! Principle/integrity/old school means jack all to the majority. I admire the thought though..

We use the word grateful when we want to show appreciation for an act of kindness or for some benefit we have received. But Wael didn’t go into this to be kind to Gasheads or provide us with some benefit he went into it to satisfy his own personal desires and there is nothing wrong with that. If, as a side effect, he had made Rovers a successful football team, secured a modern stadium and the club had been transformed into one which was enjoyable to be part of then there would be cause to thank him. But he hasn’t. Wael has already shown he had enough money to get Rovers into serious trouble but if Gasheads keep saying we are “grateful” (and to me his latest open letter sounded as if that is what he is looking for) we will encourage him to make more unwise decisions and the club will continue to decline. But if the message from Gasheads was more assertive and showed that we expect him to perform better himself, and not hide behind the failure of those he employed, I think the outcome for Rovers and for him would be a lot better.

Nice post as always, Swiss but this feeling of hiding behind others resonates pre Wael. Higgs refused to take responsibility or even plan for non league. At least, publicly. Dunford was liked/unliked but I found his tenure to be ok... just that, ok.. (I actually liked gd myself). Dennis was a genuine saviour. I know you appeared to knock around with some of forementioned, and others, but I'm just a pleb. What is your advice to a season ticket/helpline/occasionally 50/50 and regular bar payee?

No one is more plebeian than me o2 . All those you mention came from humble backgrounds and had to earn their money so recognized its true value and you can add Gerry Francis and Darrell Clarke to that list. When Nick Higgs came to power I could see him making the same mistakes I had made ten years earlier, namely that when you have had some success you sometimes have a tendency to think everything you touch will turn to gold and only find out the hard way that it doesn’t. My forum postings at that time were aimed at trying to prevent him making this mistake but were to no avail and as is happening now he was also surrounded by a group of loyalists who were “grateful” and shouted down any criticism which only encouraged him to keep blundering. I just think we need to take a mature attitude to the club owners and treat them as we would a leader in any other walk of life. If our boss, or the headmaster of our kids school or the chairman of our village cricket team was failing we wouldn’t bow and scrape and say how grateful we were. We would say “look you took on this responsibility and we want you succeed but it’s not working and you have to do something about it, we’ll help if we can but it’s up to you to lead the way”

Maybe a good start would be him going on a Radio Bristol phone in programme and answering questions,Geoff Twentyman hinted the other night that he would like that to happen.

I think you are being asked whether withdrawing financial support is likely to get Wael's attention? Of course he won't notice one person not paying for streams or ordering tat from the club shop, so let him know, politely, via Twitter or something, what you are doing, and why would be my advice. If what you say about Wael's financial situation is correct then he can't continue to cover £3m P/A indefinitely, something has to change. Turning us into a talent conveyor belt to pay the bills has taken us from the top of the division straight to relegation, so that ain't gonna work. Wonder what his next plan is?

(nowt wrong with that, although the 'South Bristol' bit is sub-optimal) They had an annexe at Red Cross Street near Old Market where I studied economics alongside Gordon “flash ” Fearnley. My most enduring memory of that time is the contrast between his Italian styled designer wardrobe and my Fairfax House special offers.
