But we did grind out a different kind of win tonight to go top for an hour before Kent won to go top. That makes it only 1 defeat in our last 9 games and 5 wins out of 6. Good time to hit form. 😀

On a serious note: I was concerned when I saw the squad for tonight’s game. I thought we’d be struggling to put out a competitive team with no Banton, Hildreth, Gregory, Abell, but we just about scraped a win tonight. And I started, for the first time, to feel sympathy for Surrey and Yorkshire and the hits they take from England calls. Our academy continues to produce very good players and whilst I’ve seen Goldsworthy play I haven’t seen Will Smeed but people are saying he’s a real talent and as he’s joined the Manchester Originals in the 100 I think he’s come in under the radar somewhat. Banton has better be included in the England team tomorrow otherwise I will struggle to understand why he’s missed 2 T20 and 1 very important Championship game to carry the drinks. I’m looking forward to seeing Devon Conway against Leicestershire. I’ve been saying for at least 4 years we needed a solid red ball batsman and I’m hopeful he’s the one to give our batting some greater consistency. Azhar was good but Conway is in great form. Fingers crossed.

Somewhat of a recovery in the 8th wicket stand of a 100, the weather certainly playing it's part at Taunton 🤔 Finished with a cool 461 for 9 Dec, Somerset are hysterical. Game after game, 250 from the tail gets them out of trouble. I was at Cheltenham today. No sun. No rain. A bit of wind, not very cold. Fantastic array of food. No one wearing masks. Obviously sensible to see two sides bat before calling the scoreboard, but I’m calling it below par by about two hundred runs. The bowling wasn’t at all threatening all day, just about every Glos Batsman made a shocking decision. On paper Hammond got 75, but his shot was the worst of all. In mitigation, if having a thin squad is ever an excuse, but added to the absence of Charlesworth and Cobain, Dent has a broken finger, Smith and Higgins also absent, and Phillips deemed better choice for this match than GVB. You know you are done for when Scott walks out to open. They might get some absentees in for Sunday, but by then it’s already too late, the loss in this game doesn’t set up a showdown with Hampshire, with Hampshire and Somerset set to seal huge wins in the next couple days.

Glums having a cracking day with the ball, meanwhile Somerset getting held up by some stubborn Leicester batting, Hampshire help up with the weather looking in a good position to get good points, still going to be tight after this round of games Back from Cheltenham. Very little sun, plenty of wind, and it rained. The weather done for Middlesex. The four wickets in the morning fell in gloom under low cloud. After the rain the air was muggy, on the drying field every glos bowler was bowling bananas, even Tom Price who bowled so helplessly against Somerset in his only previous tryout last year. This round of matches have almost certainly decided the top two. Somerset’s draw against Leicestershire takes them through, considering Surrey’s humiliation in this round and Hampshire and Glos meet next week so both cannot pass Somerset. Hampshire virtually certain to mop up Surrey tomorrow, after key wickets this evening. Even if Gloucestershire beat Middlesex, as looks likely, Hampshire will be a long way ahead on points, the draw, the weather created draw means Hampshire join Somerset in Division 1. The media won’t tell you Hampshire are already through this week, there will be some degree of ramping a Gloucestershire win in the last round takes them through. The reality is at least two of the Cheltenham match days next week are a wash out, perhaps even three. www.yr.no/nb/værvarsel/daglig-tabell/2-2653261/Storbritannia/England/Gloucestershire/Cheltenham

Why hysterical? Our bottom half got us out of trouble? We had an opening stand of 134!! I agree two century stands for the 8th and 9th wicket but Van De Merwe did it last match as well so it’s not as if it’s a one off. Yes, we do bat deep but why is it hysterical? Anyway was in Taunton for the first 3 days but not today. Leicestershire did very well and batted well on a harmless pitch, only 16 wickets in the whole match and nearly 1000 runs. Well done to them. I’ll finish with my normal complaint at the ECB. Why on earth do they think that ordering Jack Leach to self isolate and so take him out of our team, take Coverton and Gregory after day 2 and put them into a bubble that England can’t keep secure is a good thing. Gregory wasn’t chosen for this match because he’s not fit! How on earth will choosing him unfit help him or England. We were already without Abell so without 4 front line bowlers it meant that on such a placid pitch we couldn’t really do much on day 3. Our usually dangerous bowling attack was without Coverton, Gregory, Abell, Leach and Josh Davey might have an injury as he didn’t bowl on Tuesday. We’re not that big a county to be able to withstand losing effectively 5 top bowlers. And that’s without considering we lost Bess and Joverton from last season. So it became a draw and not a win. Never mind it was good to be at the cricket and two very good days and a Leicester fight back with a dour but determined batting performance.

I meant hysterical in a good way, as you pointed out it keeps happening. Two innings of first Middlesex game and some games last season too. It’s hysterically good nine ten jack keep doing it. But also hysterically wrong. Last season and this season the team would be nowhere without the frequency of this. And Somerset have every right to bemoan King of Spain’s mess of the England bubble, taking Overton from this game probably denied Somerset a win. Neverless, I make it 3 points at Surrey ensure Somerset’s Div 1 status, or are they already through?

But following what happened yesterday, what Surrey done today is remarkable. And yes, it absolutely changes things. Everyday this week things have ebbed and flowed remarkably. If Glos secure the win, draw next week will favour them, and the forecast this weekend and first half of next week is poor (soon next week the umpires lift the stumps the weather is settling down)

Neverless, I make it 3 points at Surrey ensure Somerset’s Div 1 status, or are they already through? Good response. Fair enough. Not only this and last season, it has happened consistently for 3/4 years because our batting esp the openers have been poor since Tres in his prime. We’ve been crying out for a top batsman in form, like Conway so far. The others we’ve had haven’t been in form. But in defence of our players currently in this Leicestershire match they were got out by good bowling. They didn’t, as they so often do, give their wickets away so well done to Leicestershire. But you’re completely right about Middlesex, they should have beaten us twice instead of us beating them. Their batting has been even worse than ours though they might make a better job of it today, hopefully! But I still expect Gloucestershire to wrap up a win mid afternoon. As for the ECB and their bubbles, Tom Banton been with us all season no problems and coming back into form. England take him last week but don’t bother to play him. Now he won’t play at all and because of that and the calling up of Overton and Gregory our whole season is in jeopardy. Incompetence on the part of the ECB doesn’t even begin to explain it. Our bowling attack will be pretty flimsy at the Oval next week. Yes we will still go through but to actually win the County Championship I think we need Hampshire to go through with us ( to do with the points we carry forward). I’m not confident about the Surrey match. They won’t stop us going through even if they win but it would disadvantage us in the next stage.

That’s what you call a collapse. Typical Middlesex based on this season. Makes next week intriguing. Gloucestershire have come back well after a bad spell. They look to be in the best position to get the second place or even first because I think Somerset will struggle next week at Surrey with all the injuries and withdrawals. If we get two points we’ll stop Surrey whatever but if we then lose then both Hampshire and Gloucestershire could both qualify. Gloucestershire probably need to lose to not qualify. Looking good for them. Should be an exciting week.
