A wonderful days cricket. Everything, a collapse, a recovery early afternoon and an 8th wicket stand of 170. Abbott hammered all over the ground, 24-2-132-1 an dthat wicket was when Gregory was going for it. Who’d have thought! Wicket still looks green today but the sun is shining and Hampshire have a strong batting team and we’re without Overton. To answer your question superbus, we are well over par considering where we were at 2.00 yesterday but overall about par if you’re talking about two top teams. Hampshire have a good attack with Abbott and Barkerbut withoutAbbas who’s gone back to Pakistan they didn’t look to have much else and once Abbott and Barker were knackered mid afternoon Somerset batsmen made hay. But an evenly balanced match I’d say.

Could still go either way. meanwhile at Leicester, Gloucestershire 80 for 1 lost 9 for 80 on a pitch that is now a Bunsen. Somerset have to think of themselves first and foremost, but a defeat of Hampshire does Gloucestershire a favour.

Quick 2 wickets have helped Somerset but it will be a close thing. Defeat Hampshire and it helps Somerset and yes it does help Gloucestershire but atm Gloucestershire need to help themselves and they’ve really hit a wall over the last few matches. And there’s a long way to go in their latest match, they’ve shown they can bat stubbornly.

And there’s a long way to go in their latest match, they’ve shown they can bat stubbornly. the break from 4 day stuff and fact they have two games at Cheltenham helps Gloucestershire, they are still very much in it and could be okay. Somerset foxes home and Surrey away, Hampshire play Surrey and visit Gloucestershire, lots of top 4 clashes. Weather forecast for first few weeks July is poor on most models, so rain effected draws should put Somerset through and tight between the other three. The Somerset declaration denying Gloucestershire chance of bowling point could knock Gloucestershire out after all.

What looks like a very interesting day at Taunton is likely to be curtailed by low cloud, not looking very promising, if the cloud lifts then an instant declaration along with atmospheric conditions could lead to a handsome win for Somerset, here's hoping 🤞😊

I’ve been here all the time and yesterday after tea we had Hampshire on the ropes, 250 ahead, 7 wickets left and the bowlers completely worn out. Yet we meandered along at about 3 an over for the century stand between Goldswirthy and Bartlett. Not much in the pitch and I’d be surprised if we could bowl Hampshire out in less than a day. They are batting now with Banton in so I’m looking for an exciting 30 minutes before the declaration. But, an alternative view, Somerset will be happy with a draw and always would have been to keep themselves 10 points above Hampshire. They won’t be unhappy with Somerset and Hampshire going through because we’ve beaten Hampshire and we take more points through if it’s Hampshire and not Gloucestershire. Gloucestershire’s loss yesterday afternoon may have influenced how this game went. And Somerset may bat on to ensure they don’t lose. I may be wrong but I’m not sure there is a great enough incentive to go for the win and risk the defeat in the current position. If so it’s a shame after 3 very good days.

Looking at the long range forecasts looks like weather will make draws out of last rounds of fixtures. Up Next, the Bash.

Yes, the Bash starts today. Should be entertaining but I’m not expecting any great stuff from us. Though it was good to see Tom Banton score very quickly last week under pressure from the Hampshire bowlers. At least this competition will allow those one-day specialists some batting time before “The Hundred” starts. I have little time for this competition but I do feel sorry for the players who were selected for the franchises nearly two years ago now and since then, nothing. When they were selected they were in form, since, there’s been little cricket and some players may struggle. So I’m looking forward to seeing them get some 20/20 cricket.

Just noticed the Durham v Essex match. Essex 182 a.o. Durham 40-5. Of 15 wickets to fall 11 have been LBW, 3 bowled and only 1 caught. All 5 Durham wickets are LBW. they had a ding dong last time they met. Gloucestershire having a mare at the Oval. Lancashire going strong against Yorks. A great day out for our Irish? Sorry - been offline for a bit as panicking about a house move but seems sorted now so free to chat nonsense about cricket again!
The Latvian is right. The wheels have come off horribly for Glos. Think the truth is probably some where in between. I don't think they are as good as their result suggested early or as bad as they have suggested in the last few weeks. Very much underdogs to get through to the next stage now though with Surrey finally clicking.
I went to 3 out of 4 days at Old Trafford for the Roses match. Bliss to be watching cricket again! 1st morning was the key bit after that it was very attritional. I'm probably biased because I see them a lot but I really do think Mahmood and Bailey should be in the England reckoning. More so Mahmood who I think is genuine class but England could do a lot worse than Bailey in English conditions which they have just been done over by New Zealand at their own game. Looking less likely that I'll get my Lancs - Glos game at OT later in the summer but should be some key games played there in September so I'm not complaining as I should be able to watch some good competitive cricket. Would love to go to the return Roses at Scarborough but am busy that week.
Now we have T20 from now to the end of time.....

I only saw bits of it on the TV, but the spell Mahmood bowled early on the (3rd) morning was fantastic. Quick and movement both ways. I can see why the selectors like him. England have a plethora of fast bowlers at the moment. Shame we've got no batters or spinners!

England have a plethora of fast bowlers at the moment. Shame we've got no batters or spinners! It is a shame we’ve no batsmen nor spinners. But tbh why haven’t we got spinners? They don’t want to play Leach and seem to be messing with him, he’d be better off back at Somerset. And I’m honestly not just saying that because we actually want him and need him. England seem to be muddled over Leach they think he should be in the squad to quell the media but seem not to want him in the team. 3 years ago Mason Crane was pressing for a place but he seems to have disappeared off the radar. I saw him do 12th man duties for Hampshire at Taunton last week. Organ was their spinner with Dawson. Dawson bowled few overs in the first innings and Organ had a long spell on the third afternoon. He got 3 wickets, 2 were given away from Somerset batsmen but he outwitted Abell who was on 98 at the time. But he was expensive and will not be better than Leach. My point is Crane is now third choice spinner at Hampshire. Who else? Parkinson at Lancashire and Verdi at Surrey. Counties we’re encouraged to create spinning pitches for days 3 and 4. What’s happened to that? Again muddled thinking from the ECB esp when other counties who didn’t necessarily have the spin attack to take advantage when they came across a spinning pitch started to complain. Somerset now, after their fine which seems to have lasted forever, will not be looking at producing real turning pitches I don’t think, though I’ll be interested to see the state of the August and September pitches. Anyway with Leach twiddling his thumbs for the last two Summers in the England dressing room Somerset will go for pitches to help their pace attack I hope. Sorry Jack, it’s a long way to answer your question why aren’t there any spinners. But simply a few are there but England don’t want to play them or prepare pitches to help them which, with India about to visit may not be completely surprising! Counties by and large are not producing them either, they’d prefer to have pitches to help the healthy crop of county fast/medium bowlers instead. And, from a biased pov as a Somerset fan we did produce pitches which helped spinners and Nottinghamshire, Lancashire, Surrey and Essex all benefitted from those pitches yet got fined.

Mahmood could be back in the England side very soon. I think stone is injured now. England called up Overton but didn’t use him. Garton is now in the one day side, will be interesting to see how he goes because he demolished Gloucestershire single handed. The bad news is the mixed weather looks set to stay for at least 8 weeks Attachment Deleted

The weather forecast is awful isn’t it? It will really decimate the 20/20 and even the Hundred if it persists into August. For once the North group seems to be getting the better weather whilst the South group has been badly hit. What with all the foreign withdrawals from the Hundred from overseas players the ECB plans look to be falling apart. I actually hope the Hundred gets the weather we need and it’s a success, I think English Cricket needs it to be successful but everything looks to be working against it. Pouring down here at the moment so I don’t think India v NZ will have much play today being only 40 miles away.

Well, I missed the best two matches of the Euros to watch Kent v Somerset this evening. I wasn’t let down. Kent started well an looked to be on for a total of 180/190. But Somerset esp Lewis Gregory bowled very well to limit them to 168. After that it was the Tom Banton and Devon Conway show. Banton, a chanceless innings of 107 and 50 for Conway gave a 10 wickets win with nearly 5 overs to spare. Fantastic entertainment if you’re a Somerset fan, not so much for Kent. Very close at the top end of the South table, no one sure yet of being in the top 4.
