If they're going for batting points they might want to stop losing wickets. 143/6
edit: which they did. Well played Tom Abell. 3 bonus points and a crafty declaration to thwart Glos getting a 3rd.

He did play well and he had the chance to get his career best score which is 134, so well done to him for giving that up. Our top order batting isn’t the strongest but our bottom half is strong compared to other counties. Having Lewis Gregory coming in at 9 gives us a chance to do what we did today. Still likely to be a draw.

Still likely to be a draw. I’ve come in from the ground. So much for global warming. It was a cold blustery wind and very cloudy. I can’t really explain why the wickets went down when they did, other than as Wareham says a middle order out of nick, it was same bowlers, track, conditions and an older ball, yet all of a sudden as new batsman came in they were playing and missing. There was a bit of cloud for Worrals spell where he took his tally to 3. Because of this collapse I think Somerset ultimately achieved under par scoring for the track. The crafty declaration may not have had denying Glos a point in mind, merely maximise the Somerset bonus take, the 50 runs from 2 wickets run a ball maybe longer odds than backing bowlers to make one or two, especially with gauranteed overs tonight quickly disappearing nothing much guarantteed tomorrow. it’s not just Gloucester on the mind, Hampshire now level on points with Somerset, only behind by the draw and bonus Somerset take from this - qualifying can end up very tight between all three.

outstanding start from Somerset this AM, the glums stand at 25-5 !! but rain has held up play again not only that but the Umpires complaint about dissent shown by Gloucestershire could now result in points reduction. the actual forecast for the rain isn’t until after tea now, but bad light and mizzle could keep them on and off most the day.

There’s been a few wickets where the Gloucestershire batsmen looked very unhappy, did they say something as well? Bracey yesterday didn’t look happy and Lace this morning hung about after being given out. Have the umpires officially complained? They’d have had to do it overnight and if so Lace’s reaction this morning wouldn’t have helped. Be surprised if anything happened to Gloucestershire as a club though the players may get a Level 1 warning if they do it again. Pressure showing, something Gloucestershire might not be so used to.

Glorious glorious rain here in GL12. Hopefully conditions are similar in Bristol.

Glos have enjoyed nothing but good momentum since the season began, interesting to see if they can bounce back from this failure at The Oval next week. Dent exposed his team to the pressure with his diabolical shot.

Glorious glorious rain here in GL12. Hopefully conditions are similar in Bristol. yes that’s probably it from this one now, but Somerset did get the point for 300 and 2 bowling points in quick time. It’s a three way battle, so those points hurt Hampshire in first instance, as draw in Somerset won’t suit them. They were right, as I suggested last night, in the moment they chose to switch to bowling. The last two can wag for 50, but there was more than runaball cut off for the point. Bowling is Somerset strong point, but chairing bowler around ground like the Pakistan team of 80’s and 90’s without waiting for the umpires decision is going to grate with cricket loving opponents and neutrals, isn’t it? Bracey was bang out of order to stand his ground and glare when given out, that doesn’t appeal to cricket lovers either.

Play at last between Somerset and the glums, going to take a bit of inventiveness from the captains to achieve some sort of result other than the obvious, [Sunday not like;ly to be that great] but no doubt the glums will be happier of the two if it just follows the current path Very true, but I don’t think there’s going to be much negotiation. Somerset may go for maximum batting points later this afternoon and hope to get some bowling points tomorrow and get the best of the draw. Gloucestershire probably happy to just meander along, get the draw and still have the game in hand. Yes - there wasn't really much incentive for Glos to manufacture a finish there. Almost got one by accident though!

Provided the two top do go through, still to play both Hampshire can top this group. www.espncricinfo.com/series/county-championship-2021-1244186/gloucestershire-vs-somerset-group-2-1244271/match-report-4

Thanks superbus. So it’s only half points then, which is different to what was said a few months ago. Unnecessarily complicated and as a principal why are matches played earlier in the season worth only half what they are later on (even if the rule in this case favours Somerset)? Don’t agree with that but rules are.....Perhaps it’s to avoid the situation that would happen if Somerset and Gloucestershire did qualify. Gloucestershire with full points would have 32 and Somerset would have 19. Enough to make sure Somerset would probably not finish top and therefore couldn’t be Champions which goes against what this Stage 2 is meant to be doing I guess. The same argument may be surrounding groups 1 and 3 with the teams that qualify. Its all quite complicated!! Anyway, not sure that Somerset will be in top two. Weather is improving and we miss the next round of matches when there will be results and Hampshire may be clicking. 3/4 rounds to go so lots of points up for grabs.

In theory Hampshire have bowling and batting quality so could beat both Somerset and Gloucestershire away. All three could make the argument they will produce the strongest third placed side than the other 2 groups? The weak suit for all three looks like the batting line up having off days. Hampshire and Somerset’s next match is at Taunton. The injury prone Barker could be the differential if he plays as he adds wickets to the back up bowling. your argument why it’s halved seems a good one. Also if in new group you play remainder once, halved from twogames bring with you makes sense also.

Thanks, yes, your point that halving the points because they come from two matches makes a lot of sense if you then play the other teams from groups 1 and 3 once. I guess come the end of the season we’ll kind of know if the best team wins the County Championship. And if this “conference” system continues the ECB may change things for next season in the light of experience.

And if this “conference” system continues the ECB may change things for next season in the light of experience. I think that’s fair, decide at the end if this type of system anoints the rightful Kings that year. If so. Conference has some good things for it, provided there are no vagaries of play offs, every team is in with a chance from the start. It can guarantee 2 games against your nearest, biggest rival, the game that pulls fans in, so a nod to good business. Some sort of seeding system to avoid easy groups and groups of death would be tricky bit. It would also be good, if as well as derby games and good seeding it takes into account who haven’t met for a while? it’s certainly made competitive cricket, already teams scrapping over bonus points in the game, which brings the whole point of bonus points to life, as well as encouraging last day run chases and desperate hold outs for draws. It appears to have had a galvanising effect?

Gloucestershire have lost the toss in some trouble here. Same team from last week, picked up exactly where they left off, don’t look like beating the bat or capable of bowling Surrey out once, let alone twice.
It’s a used pitch, and Surrey have slipped in a second quality spinner. Could be a small bonus point gathering loss, for Glos.

It was only a matter of time before Surrey started playing well. Had a slow start but getting it together now as the season progresses. Too many good players for them not to be a winning team. Gloucestershire just got two wickets so it’s looking a bit better. Weather set fair for a result one way or the other. Yorkshire have made a recovery from a dire position v Lancashire, but still in trouble. The winner there should be set fair for Stage 2 later on.
