Manchester Originals produced some superb death bowling to beat Trent Rockets by one run in a final-ball thriller at Old Trafford in The Hundred women's competition.
The Rockets, who would have gone top of the group standings with a victory, needed four off the final ball to win but England's Nat Sciver-Brunt could only pull Kathryn Bryce for two.
The Originals had been thrashed by Welsh Fire in their opener but produced a fine display to record their first win of the season - and hand the Rockets their first defeat.
After being put into bat the Originals made a measured start before Bryce (32), Eve Jones (34) and some late power hitting from skipper Sophie Ecclestone (13) helped them post a competitive 137-6.
The Rockets had looked in control for much of their chase with Sciver-Brunt (56 not out) and Australia's Ash Gardner (36) anchoring the innings.
But, needing 22 off the final 10 balls, Originals bowlers Lauren Filer and Bryce slowed the scoring to help their side to a thrilling victory.

Northern Superchargers and Southern Brave recorded the first tie in The Hundred women's competition in a low-scoring thriller at Headingley.

The Superchargers required three to win off the final delivery, but batter Kate Cross could only scamper through for two after driving to long-on.

In a match that was a repeat of last year's final, defending champions Brave lost wickets at regular intervals and could only post 100-8, with Chloe Tryon top-scoring with 25.

The Superchargers cruised through much of their chase and needed just 19 from their final 20 balls.

But Lauren Bell, who finished with her tournament-best figures of 4-11, took the crucial wicket of Alice Davidson-Richards (27 off 22) and conceded only six runs off her final five deliveries.

Given Superchargers' advantage through much of the chase, Brave will perhaps be the happier with the result, though both teams remain without a win in this season's competition after losing their openers.

Birmingham Phoenix ended a run of 13 matches without a win in the Hundred women's competition with an Ellyse Perry-inspired victory over Trent Rockets.

Australia's Perry struck a brilliant 66 off 34 deliveries to help the visitors post 139-3 at Trent Bridge.

The 33-year-old then took 1-10 off 10 deliveries and a stunning catch on the long-on boundary to remove Rockets opener Bryony Smith.

England's Nat Sciver-Brunt hit 59 off 37 balls to lead the chase but was caught attempting a ramp shot off the bowling of Charis Pavely late in the innings.

Heather Graham finished unbeaten on 30 to ensure a close finish, but could only slice a two with six needed to win off the final ball.

Match report:

Hayley Matthews hit an unbeaten 78 as Welsh Fire beat Oval Invincibles by six wickets in The Hundred women's competition at Lord's.

The hard-hitting West Indies star paced her 46-ball knock perfectly to help Fire chase down a tough target of 151 with five balls to spare.

Danielle Gibson hit 41 off 25 balls for Invincibles and seamer Freya Davies was the pick of the Fire bowlers, dismissing England captain Heather Knight for five and Meg Lanning (31) in the space of three balls.

Fire struggled for fluency early on before Matthews stepped on the accelerator.

With 16 needed from 10 balls, Matthew saw it off in style with consecutive boundaries off the bowling of Deepti Sharma.

Spirit suffer a first defeat in this year's competition and remain second in the table, with Fire moving into third place.

Laura Wolvaardt hit an unbeaten 78 as Manchester Originals beat winless Southern Brave by six wickets in The Hundred women's competition.

Brave posted a competitive 136-5 thanks to Danni Wyatt's 61 off 46 balls and useful contributions from Charli Knott (27) and Maia Bouchier (24).

England left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone finished the pick of the Originals' attack (2-17), with Kim Garth and Fi Morris claiming one wicket apiece.

Originals lost opener Beth Mooney for just two early on in their run-chase but a stand of 80 from Wolvaardt and Eve Jones (39) for the second wicket got them back on track.

Brave took three wickets for eight runs as Georgia Adams claimed 2-24 to leave the Originals at 100-4 off 77 balls.

However, Wolvaardt kept her cool, and with 10 runs required off the final set she hit Lauren Cheatle for three consecutive fours to secure victory with two balls to spare.

Northern Superchargers Women win by 82 runs


Match report:

Annabel Sutherland starred with bat and ball as Northern Superchargers clinched a thumping 82-run victory over Oval Invincibles in The Hundred's women's competition.

The 22-year-old all-rounder smashed an unbeaten 63 off 40 balls - her maiden fifty in the competition - as she and Australia team-mate Phoebe Litchfield (44) provided the bulk of the Superchargers' total of 146-4.

Rachel Slater claimed 2-11 for the Invincibles, but both Marizanne Kapp and Amanda-Jade Wellington went wicketless.

Linsey Smith and Kate Cross then combined superbly with the ball for the Superchargers with two wickets apiece in a devastating opening spell as the Invincibles collapsed to 23-5 off 22 balls.

Paige Scholfield and Wellington gave the Invincibles faint hope with counter-attacking knocks of 24 and 26.

However, Sutherland enjoyed a stellar day as she blew away the home side's lower order with four wickets in six balls - including Wellington - to wrap up the success in style.

Amy Jones hit her maiden half-century in The Hundred and then produced a record-breaking performance behind the stumps as Birmingham Phoenix beat Southern Brave by 16 runs in the women's competition.

Jones top-scored with 51 off 36 balls, while Emily Arlott chipped in with a 12-ball 22 as Phoenix posted a competitive 137-7.

Tilly Corteen-Coleman was the pick of the Brave bowlers at Edgbaston as the 16-year-old left-arm spinner claimed 2-22.

Phoenix skipper Ellyse Perry ripped through the Brave top order as she took 3-21, including the key wickets of Maia Bouchier and Smriti Mandhana.

Danni Wyatt whacked a defiant 43 off 33 balls but as soon as she and Freya Kemp (23) were out, Brave's effort faltered as they were bowled out for 121.

England wicketkeeper Jones snaffled six catches with the gloves - the most dismissals of any wicketkeeper in the history of the women's tournament.

Sarah Bryce hit her maiden half-century in The Hundred to pilot Welsh Fire to a six-wicket win over Trent Rockets that moved them to the top of the table in the women's competition.

The 24-year-old keeper-batter was unbeaten on 51 off 39 balls as Fire chased down their target of 131 with two deliveries to spare.

Bryce's smart stumping had ended Rockets' top scorer Nat Sciver-Brunt's knock of 37, as the home side posted a total of 130-5.

Jess Jonassen was the pick of Fire's bowlers with 2-29, and the Australian's 26 in a 38-run partnership with Bryce was a vital part of the run chase.

Nath Wraith, Ash Gardner and Heather Graham could not capitalise on good starts in the Rockets' innings, and Bryce was alert enough behind the stumps to catch home skipper Sciver-Brunt out of her ground off Jonassen's bowling.

Mistakes from several Rockets fielders in the closing stages helped Bryce and Georgia Elwiss, who grabbed 18 off 15 balls, to help Fire to their third win of the 2024 competition.

London Spirit and Oval Invincibles played out a thrilling tie in The Hundred women's competition at Lord's.

Having taken 4-11 in the Spirit innings, Marizanne Kapp (47) looked set to guide Invincibles to a comfortable victory, with the visiting side needing just four runs from their final nine balls.

But Deepti Sharma bowled the South African all-rounder and the Spirit delivered five successive dot balls to put themselves back in contention.

Ryana Macdonald-Gay scooped Danni Gibson for two but was run out from the final ball of the innings as the Spirit pulled off an unlikely result.

Having been put into bat, Spirit found themselves reduced to 47-5 at halfway, with their top five - including Meg Lanning and Heather Knight - all bowled, four of them by Kapp.

India international Sharma (44) dragged the Spirit score towards respectability, before becoming the first of three wickets in the final six balls of the innings as the hosts finished on 113-9.

Invincibles lost Chamari Athapaththu and captain Lauren Winfield-Hill cheaply in their reply, but Kapp and Alice Capsey put on 54 for the third wicket to put their side in control.

Sharma bowled Capsey, sparking a mini collapse as Invincibles lost 4-13, but Kapp looked set to bring her side home before the India international returned to spark a remarkable end to the London derby.
