Beth Mooney hit an unbeaten 99 as Manchester Originals beat Northern Superchargers by 17 runs in the women's Hundred competition at Old Trafford.

The Australian opener struck the second highest score in the competition's history as her side made 151-3, a target the Superchargers proved to many, finishing on 134-8.

The Originals had suffered the disappointment of being eliminated from the competition by the Invincibles-Spirit result earlier in the day, but will have enjoyed keeping their local rivals from moving top of the table.

The home side won the toss and their decision to bat proved a good one, as Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt put on 60 for the first wicket.

Linsey Smith had Woolvardt stumped, but Mooney accelerated, scoring 51 of the 67 runs in a partnership with Kathryn Bryce.

Originals retired Bryce (13 from 21) with 10 balls to go, replacing her with Sophie Ecclestone, but the England spinner was run out from the final ball of the innings attempting the second run that would have taken Mooney to her century.

The Superchargers lost openers Davina Perrin and Hollie Armitage for single figures in their reply, but the Australian pair of Phoebe Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland put on 41 for the third wicket.

Kim Garth bowled Litchfield and Eve Jones caught Sutherland off the bowling of Bryce to see the Superchargers slip to 102-4.

Georgia Wareham kept the Superchargers in the match, hitting Danielle Gregory for three fours.

But Bryce returned for the final set, combined with Mooney to complete a hat-trick, seeing Alice Davidson-Richards caught and Kate Cross stumped, before removing Wareham two balls later as Superchargers fell well short of their total.

England Test captain Ben Stokes was carried off the field after sustaining a hamstring injury while playing for the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred.

Stokes was batting for the Superchargers in their match with Manchester Originals at Old Trafford on Sunday when he pulled up after running a single.

England are set to begin a three-match Test series against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford on Wednesday, 21 August, with doubt now surrounding the skipper's prospects of being involved.

The Superchargers said Stokes will have the injury assessed, with an update expected on Monday.

Team-mate Harry Brook, captain of the Superchargers, said the situation "doesn't look great".

The 33-year-old Stokes was clearly in pain while being attended to by physios, punching his leg in frustration.

He was wheeled into the pavilion on a gurney, before being seen on crutches at the end of the match.

Should he be unavailable for England duty in the coming weeks, vice-captain Ollie Pope would be likely to step up and captain the side.

Stokes appeared to have returned to full fitness this summer after recovering from surgery on a knee injury that had limited his ability to bowl.

He opted out of the Indian Premier League and T20 World Cup to assist with his recovery, then led England to a 3-0 series victory over the West Indies, taking five wickets at 34.20 in three Tests.

Stokes has been playing in the Hundred for the first time since 2021, and this was his third match for Northern Superchargers.

He was bowled by Tim Southee for a first-ball duck in the match against Birmingham Phoenix on Tuesday, before being dismissed for two in a shortened game against Welsh Fire two days later.

Opening the batting on Sunday in a chase of 153 against the Originals, he was two not out after four balls when he picked up his injury and had to retire hurt.

Superchargers went on to win the match by seven wickets.

A rapid 43 from Brook and a 33-ball knock of 66 not out from Nicholas Pooran took them to victory with three balls remaining.

Brook, speaking on Sky Sports, said of Stokes' injury: "Doesn't look great unfortunately, but I think he'll be getting a scan tomorrow and we'll see how he is."

Tim Southee took a brilliant 5-12 to set Birmingham Phoenix on their way to a crucial six-wicket win over Trent Rockets at Edgbaston.

The New Zealand seamer struck twice early on to dismiss Tom Banton and Joe Root before claiming three in the last five balls of the innings as Rockets were restricted to 118.

A review denied him a hat-trick after John Turner was initially given out lbw but Southee still finished with the second best figures in The Hundred men's competition.

Left-hander Tom Alsop was among Southee's victims but only after making an impressive 51 from 37 balls on debut for the visitors.

Rockets bowlers Turner and Luke Wood were also on hat-tricks as Phoenix were put under pressure at 52-4 in the chase.

But with such a modest target, it only took one partnership to get the hosts back on track and Liam Livingstone (30* from 32 balls) and Jacob Bethell provided it.

A patient, unbroken stand of 68 took Phoenix to victory with seven balls to spare.

The win lifts them up to third and keeps progress to the eliminator in their own hands, while Rockets are now out.

Northern Superchargers moved into the knockout places of the men's Hundred after their match with London Spirit at Headingley was abandoned because of rain.

Chasing 111, the Superchargers were comfortably ahead of the run-rate on 64-1 after 44 balls when the skies opened, winning the match by 21 runs on the DLS method.

The result means they move second in the table having played all their group matches, but they will need other games to go in their favour if they are to reach the elimination match.

Having been put into bat, Spirit swiftly lost Michael Pepper and Dan Lawrence to the home side's seamers, but Keaton Jennings made a 12-ball 30 before being caught by Pat Brown off the bowling of Reece Topley.

He was the only batter in their top five to pass five, as the Spirit slid to 62-6 with England spinner Adil Rashid taking 3-16.

Veteran Ravi Bopara (31) put on 39 for the seventh wicket with Liam Dawson (27*) before he was bowled by Matty Potts with the penultimate ball of the innings.

Olly Stone was run out from the final delivery as Spirit finished on a below-par 111-8.

The Superchargers reached 47-0 in reply before Matt Critchley had Graham Clark (25) caught by Pepper from the first ball after the powerplay.

Ollie Robinson (13*) came in to join Matthew Short (25*) and the Superchargers looked set to cruise to victory until conditions intervened.

Oval Invincibles beat Trent Rockets by five wickets to progress to the women's Hundred knockout phase and eliminate their opponents.

South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp starred at Trent Bridge, taking 3-8 with the ball and anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 26 as Invincibles sealed the win with six balls to spare.

Put into bat, the Rockets endured a horror start, finding themselves 3-3 after Kapp removed openers Bryony Smith and Grace Scrivens and Rachel Slater bowled Nat Sciver-Brunt for a duck.

Ash Gardner hit a brisk 43 from 26 balls, but Rockets slipped to 60-5 when she was caught by Mady Villiers off her own bowling just past the halfway mark.

They scored just 31 from their remaining 48 deliveries, finishing on a below par 91-8.

On a difficult pitch, Invincibles were unable to wrap up the swift victory that would have seen them finish top of the table, finding themselves 33-3 after Lauren Winfield-Hill and Alice Capsey fell to consecutive deliveries from Heather Graham and Alana King.

But Kapp put on 51 for the fourth wicket with Paige Scholfield to put the Invincibles firmly in the driving seat.

Kirstie Gordon had Scholfield caught by Alexa Stonehouse and Villiers was stumped off the bowling of Gardner, but Kapp hit the winning runs to send her side into an eliminator match with London Spirit at The Oval on Saturday.

Oval Invincibles missed out on the chance to confirm a place in the final of the men's Hundred competition as they lost to Trent Rockets by six wickets in a thrilling encounter at Trent Bridge.

Opener Dawid Malan hit an unbeaten 53 as the Invincibles set a challenging target of 151, but Tom Alsop (41*) and Rovman Powell (45) put on an impressive display of strokeplay for the already eliminated Rockets as they won with six balls to spare.

Table-topping Invincibles had already qualified for the competition's knockout phase, but will now have to wait for the result of Thursday's final group game to see if they will progress directly to the final at Lord's on Sunday.

The visitors chose to bat against the already eliminated Rockets and started well, reaching 47-0 before Lewis Gregory removed Will Jacks lbw.

Malan shared a partnership of 71 with Ollie Cox (39), ended when the new England call-up was bowled by Sam Cook, and Donovan Ferreira clouted 27 from 10 deliveries to close the innings.

Rockets had leading run-scorer Tom Banton caught behind for six off the bowling of Saqib Mahmood early in their reply, and were behind the rate on 57-3 at the halfway stage.

But their innings began to build momentum, starting with Alsop hammering tournament leading wicket-taker Adam Zampa for consecutive sixes.

Needing 56 with 25 balls remaining, five boundaries in the next ten balls helped bring that total down to 24.

Powell smashed Sam Curran for his fourth six of the night, but the England seamer got his revenge from the following ball, having him caught in the deep by Ferreira to end the partnership of 80.

But by that stage the damage had been done, and Alsop struck Mahmood for four to see his side home.

Georgia Redmayne backed up a fine effort from her bowlers as London Spirit comfortably beat city rivals Oval Invincibles to reach The Hundred final.

The Australian left-hander scored an unbeaten 53 from 47 balls as Spirit, set 114 to win, clinched an eight-wicket victory with nine balls to spare in the Eliminator at The Oval.

Invincibles dropped Redmayne on 19 - one of four drops in the innings - and the Spirit opener made them pay with a well-paced half-century in an unbroken stand of 74 with captain Heather Knight, who finished 36 not out off 23 balls.

Spirit were not without fault themselves in the field as Alice Capsey, who top-scored with 30 for Invincibles, was twice put down by Danielle Gibson.

But Knight's side bowled brilliantly as England spinners Charlie Dean and Sarah Glenn took 3-24 and 2-15 respectively, while seamer Eva Gray was superb for her 2-13.

Gibson also claimed two wickets and a brilliant catch to remove the dangerous Laura Harris, as Invincibles subsided late in their innings, losing five wickets in the last 14 balls.

Former Australia skipper Meg Lanning got the Spirit chase off to a strong start alongside Redmayne before the innings stalled briefly after her dismissal.

But Redmayne and Knight put them back on track, ending Invincibles' bid for a third title in four years and securing Spirit's place in the showpiece game for the first time.

Oval Invincibles have won The Hundred for the second year running after a convincing 17-run victory over Southern Brave in the final at Lord’s.

Set 148, Brave made a solid start to their chase but then collapsed from 58-0 to 102-7 as Invincibles seized control.

Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa made the initial breakthrough before fast bowler Saqib Mahmood shredded the Brave middle order with three wickets in seven balls.

Will Jacks took the key wicket of Brave skipper James Vince, the leading run-scorer in the tournament, to back up his tone-setting 37 from 22 balls at the top of the order for Invincibles.

While no Invincibles batter was able to kick on, Sam Curran and Jordan Cox both contributed value knocks of 25 and Tom Curran added 24 from 11 balls late in the innings.

Left-arm seamer Tymal Mills was the pick of the Brave attack, taking 3-33.

It looked like the Brave innings may follow a similar pattern when opener Alex Davies fell to Zampa for 35 from 23 balls.

Vince made 24 but Mahmood bowled Leus du Plooy for 20 then quickly added the wickets of Kieron Pollard and Laurie Evans to stop Brave in their tracks.

Invincibles were able to see out the match without issue and become the first men's team to successfully defend The Hundred trophy.


Oval Invincibles captain Sam Billings: "Amazing. Just a real team effort throughout the tournament, probably even better than last year. It didn't go all our way and that's the strength of the group.
