I will never forget that night back in September 2003 when Keith Curle's Mansfield side completely outplayed us, Liam Lawrence was one of the best players I've ever seen at the Mem. He went on to play 80 times in the premier league, has 15 international caps, even at 34 this will be a sensational signing. Me too, half the crowd buggered off to the pub at half time and it was bloody freezing on the Blackthorn End I wasn't at this match (one of the very few home games I missed during this era) but if I had a penny for every time someone had mentioned it in glowing terms I'd be able to make a small impact on reducing my overdraft. Is Keith Curle some sort of wizard? He seems to have convinced everyone who was at this game that Mansfield were equivalent to the 1970 Brazilian side? I know they obviously played well that day but years later there's still gushing praise for that performance. I'm not sure any performance by any opposition team is ever flagged up as much as this one. And just to confirm it was a League 2 game against Mansfield....I wasn't there, I'll clearly never understand what I missed. I'm just bitter I think - I was there for all those dreary 1-0 defeats, I missed the time we were gloriously taken apart by the Harlem Globetrotters of 4th tier football! In 40 years time Gashead on their deathbed will lean over to their Grandchildren and say 'always remember the Mansfield side of 03'...... An excellent signing by the way.

Haha that's just made me laugh. Mansfield were bloody good that evening mind.

From the Bristol Post report . . . Another piece of the jigsaw falls into place then. But he's never played for Salisbury so he doesn't tick all the boxes. But what is his beard like? Anyway, does anybody else think that this signing is a good sign that we may also get Gaffney permanently? Looking at their relative ages, one might think that RG would have seen LL as a role model and someone he may have hoped to play alongside at international level when he was a teen and LL was breaking through. At the very least it won't do any harm to us landing what I would hope is our number one target this window.

I was there and I can't remember a Rovers side ever being taken apart so clinically at home. Mansfield just destroyed us that evening - fast flowing football and excellent finishing and we just couldn't live with it. We were lucky it wasn't an even more one sided result. Dis scored twice I think doing what he does best (arriving in the box late), but i remember Lawrence pulling the strings in midfield and wishing he was ours. Wish we had got him at the same time we signed Disley. If he's even half the player he was then, we have something special in the team.

I wonder if Oxford fans say the same about us c.1999? "that Robbie Pethick was a wonderful player..."
Anyway he managed a couple of decent passes and one nearly-decent effort and one poor effort on goal yesterday, in filthy conditions against a wall of defenders. I'd like to see him start the next game.
