I'd say more like Carl Gilbert Ah yes, Carl Gilbert. I remember once when (Dodgin ?) had left Gilbert out of the line-up, but he was a sub. The Tote End, who loved him, started chanting 'bring on Gilbert, bring on Gilbert' and sure enough he was brought on, quite early. I have a feeling we still lost though.

When Gilbert joined Rotherham it was reported he couldn't turn down a side like Rotherham and when he saw their training facilities he was blown away by them and had to join. Blimey it must have been a different place from the old Milmoor ground I saw in the last season in 2007 when I saw Bournemouth there the day before I went to Millenium for our JPT Final against Donny. Gilbert a bit like Sandy Allan we all liked him but he just didn't score enough. UTG!

Remember when Bliss reminded everyone of Devon because he was tall and black.

Both great players, BOTH great scoring records.

I'd say more like Carl Gilbert Affectionately labelled "Green Gilbert" by our red friends. Doubt most of our younger fans even know what a gilbert referred to!

Fair comment. Just felt that he wasn't prolific enough and never cemented place in team. But those figures aren't bad. when he came from Gillingham in 1970 did well in last half of 1969-70 but in 1970-71 scored 3 goals in 17+5 in the league before leaving. But I do agree that he was a good player and have good memories of a goal in League Cup win against Birmingham to put us in quarter finals. UTG!

I'd say more like Carl Gilbert One of my favourite Rovers players. As a 10 year old I was gutted when he left.

More of a Richard Walker for me especially his movement on the ball!
What an ace player Archie Stephens was!

Carl Gilberts goal after 41 seconds (or, was it 42) v Leyton Orient in 1969/70 is one of my favourite Rovers goals of all time (Final score 1-0).
The game was on 'Match of the Day' in the days when they showed matches from other divisions, besides the top division.
As a 14yr old, I was gutted when he left us.

One of my mates in the village has an 8 year-old called Archie - he always looks a bit bemused when with arm pumping I greet him 'Archie! Archie! Archie!

...only if you can do the salute to Gaff-ney, Gaff-ney ! What was that all about? I really don't know! I heard a story of some Gas doing it at an away match once when he burst on the scene, and it just stuck. There was an attempted resurgence when Lee Archer played too, but it never really caught on..
