I wouldn't say that, Lee Archer regularly got the Archie chant at the start of games, and subsequently if he managed to do anything good during the game. He certainly got more fan interaction than say Tony Pounder or Andy Gurney did as I remember, probably due to the fans liking to sing old songs (see also: Worrell Sterling).

That's a good point, Asty.. It was certainly a chant from where I was, but whether it caught on as much as before, I'm just not sure..

When Archie Stevens was signed from non league, he was very raw and very direct in his play, if he could see the goal he would shoot, if the ball was crossed his attitude was that it was his and woe betide anyone who got in his way. Of course BRFC soon coached that out of him. I loved watching is 100% effort, not pretty, but great to watch.

I also vividly remember standing on the North Stand terrace watching one of these early games and hearing this:
gashead#1 "what do you think of our new centre forward ?" gashead#2 "He's a bit raw" gashead#1 "yes, he is a bit"

Now I have seen more of him playing, I think he looks more like Richard Walker in the way he plays and runs

You have to see past the ginger hair And his extra pace, and his inability to get in a position from which he might score...
