The club also had a proposal in 1955 to build a new stadium in Speedwell near what is now the school close to what is now Broad Plain Rugby Club. The Supporters Club meanwhile paid for the new North Stand and floodlights at Eastville so they decided to re develop instead of moving. Greyhound racing and a well supported second division (Championship) football club with average gates of 20,000 pushing for First Division football. What was not to like ..... where did it all go wrong ?Crowds were down to under 3500 when we left with our tails between our legs and went to Bath where even 3500 was a tight fit.

I drew a picture of a potential ground for a Year 6 School Project I did on Rovers. It had two tiers behind each goal and three on either side and was to built near the M32. It had a capacity of 91,883 and has stands named after Geoff Bradford, Smash & Grab, Peter Beadle and Stuart Taylor. I'll try and dig it out to show you all. One of my mates actually built a model of a new ground in Year 7 or 8. It was a bit more modest than yours, but had the advantage of actually being built in three dimensions. I reckon he has come closer than anybody yet to building a new ground for Rovers. I bet he's still got it too.

I'm surprised to read that, as I wouldn't have thought that this piece of land would have been stable enough to build on in 1955, or even now if it comes to that. What do you mean when you say ''proposal,'' did the club seek permission or was it offered by Bristol City Council. Harrys site must be by B***** Hill Rugby Club (or Barts as they now like to be called) as Broad Plain play south of the river at the old Robinsons (?) sports ground I'm thinking that the area described by Harry is known locally as ''The Tip,'' and extends from Charlton Road to Whitefield Road and Argyle Road to Duncombe Lane. It is unstable partly because it was a council tip for a time, and also because there are old mines beneath the surface. In fact one opened up quite recently. I think it was the reference to Speedwell School that was the clincher for me, and a part of the area has become the home of B***** Hill Rugby Club.

There was planning behind it. 90,000 to make it 10,000 bigger than the old Wembley and 1,883 as a nod to the year we were founded. Also made a lot of lego stands around that time for my multi-purpose Subuteo / Scalextric stadium with Desk Lamp floodlights, I had a Rovers subuteo team as well so does that count?

Don't forget the original Hambrook stadium plans, I've no idea how that was going to be funded or why the plans bit the dust.

Remember being at the planning meeting when Kingswood council voted against the proposals for Mangotsfield in 1990. Just one councillor voted in favour. Incidentally the NIMBY leader was a ST holder at Ashton.
5 days later the Teds burnt the main stand at Twerton.

The plans bit the dust because it was deemed to have access road problems, which seemed a bit strange to me as it was edged on one side by the M32 and on another by the Filton bypass, 2 of the biggest roads in South Glos. There was also a scheme to build near Filton, guess where the site was? Yes you guessed it, it's where the current Sainsbury's and B&Q are.

No it wasn't, it was at the back of Parkway Station where Esporta was built.

I have an old video of an HTV interview in which Fox said that Rovers were "out of their tiny minds if they think they are going to build a stadium at Hambrook". I've always remembered that expression, as I thought it was very disrespectful...but as a politician in the 1980's, he knew he was on safe ground being anti-football.

That's how I remember it, in fact now I think about it some more, I remember Gordon Bennett telling me it was Dr Fox who was against it.

Admittedly it never got further than an artist's impression of how the ground could look, but there were definite discussions about the site.
