Hi Bristol Rovers supporters. Hope things are going well with your plans for a return to the Football League. Also many thanks indeed for the terrific compliments that you made on many social network sites about Grimsby Town Football Club and your wish to see us return to the Football League next season. I am not sure if you have seen what is happening at Grimsby with the supporters quest to boost our financial playing budget at our little old club? Please take a look, it is really super for a little club like ourse. If you would like to help us out with a pledge for as little as £1 it would be warmly received. Thank you. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/GTFCIt would also be very helpful if you would help our campaign by sharing this link on social network sites, Thanks once again and good luck for next season.

I assumed this was a joke but I can't find the punchline.

It's a cracking idea but I shan't be donating, mainly because it's still to a rival. I do wish Grimsby all the best but this isn't for me.

I'm with Chewie on this one.
Wish you all the best, Grimsby. Really hope you do well next season, but my can't bring myself to support any other club. I would feel like I've been unfaithful!
Good luck with raising your funds.

What I will say is over £10,000 in a matter of hours is something else. Reminds me of the time we had a successful donation scheme that they tagged another somewhat hilarious word on to.

You can't blame a chap for trying can you? But if I feel like making a donation to a football club it will be BRFC. Good luck to the good ship Mariner though, and all that sail in her.

I've just let Lagos United withdraw all my money from my account in return for owning 50% of the club

I'm afraid i'll have to side with the BR fans. You cant really expect rival fans to give to another club to buy players. Its been really cosy over the past few weeks with both sides being very complimentary, rather like finishing with your girlfriend but remaining friends and actually getting on better with her now that you are no longer seeing each other which is all really lovely and all that. But asking for a few quid is then like asking the aforementioned ex girlfriend if you can be friends with benefits - don't push it mister!

Agree with everyone else so far, but do wish you the best of luck. I can't see you failing to hit your target if the way you've started off is anything to go by, but if the worst comes to the worst you could always ask the Grimsby Telegraph to make up the shortfall - they've had a lot of extra eyeballs on their rag lately thanks to us and are always on about how they're backing you all the way. I'm sure they'd seize the chance to put their money where their mouth is and prove it

It's a great initiative by the supporters and fabulous that it's made £14K in a few hours. How do these things work: does it close at £20K or can it keep accepting funds? Also, well done to the EuroMillions winners for agreeing to double it.
It's a bit thought provoking for me, though (not whether to contribute: 'I have a charity to which I donate, thank you, but good luck'). I hugely applaud the inclusiveness and 'doing something' stuff and there's no mileage at all in not doing it, but does it put football finance in context? 'We'll all club together and raise £20K to boost the squad for promotion.' How far does £20K go? What's the playing budget at somewhere like Grimsby (or BRFC for that matter)? As equivalents, if total attendance over the season goes up by 1,000, say 40 per game, each paying £20 (keeping the figures round and ball park), there's £20K. Double those numbers because of the EuroMillions folk in this case, but it still has to be marginal and within the margin of error in financial planning. Reach the 1st round proper of the FA Cup and that would more than do it.
I'm certainly not disrespecting it - the involvement and good will benefits in themselves are probably worth more than as much again - but £20K (even doubled to £40K) doesn't buy much in football.
Much as we can talk about our Directors funding their own mistakes, the sums spent on architects, planning consultants, lawyers, managers on gardening leave, injury prone players on the treatment table etc., that £20K illuminates what a financial black hole it all is. It also shows how a bit of marketing oomph to fill the ground each week would make a huge difference in funds available (have someone who counts and aims to reduce the unsold tickets, rather than announcing the attendance), but that's another story.
I still applaud it and admire the speed it's racking up, though.

How about no? The fact we've been nice to you after completely thrashing you 1-1 doesn't mean I'm going to help your clubs financial position.

£50 donated from a whip around at the Three Lions pub at BS3 I'd get rid of that whip round damn sharpish, probably find every one of those notes with an exceptionally high cocaine reading. Off course if they all just gave 50p each you're in the clear
