2nd Test Latest: Eng won toss, West Indies 181-5...67 ovs. Pretty dull day really. The Windies really have killed their wickets in recent years.

Disappointed for Cook who looked all set to get the 100 he needs to get the media off his back (4 fifties in 7 innings suggests his form is not as bad as is claimed)
Ali's innings was one of the worst I've ever seen. I can only assume Root spooked him by calling for that near-suicidal run. He could have been run out three times in a four-ball innings.
Marlon Samuels 1 Ben Stokes 0. The salute was marvellous.
Hopefully Buttler can stay with Root today and put another quick 100 on the scoreboard, but I'd want the Windies in by lunch if possible.

England are either going to have to score very quickly and get up to a 200 run lead which seems a bit unlikely or they'll need to break through Windies resistance more comprehensively than they managed in the first test to force a result. Either way it is a similar task; take 10 wickets within a likely maximum of 3 sessions or end up having to settle for the draw. A bit sloppy from the lower middle order. We should be in a better position than this with Windies looking at having to bat out at least 5 sessions to save the game. As it is if they can skittle us quickly tomorrow they will fancy their chances of another stalemate.

I felt the evening session yesterday summed-up England's attitude to not only Test cricket, but also demonstrated why they are useless at the one-day game. The Windies bowlers were tired, and they were beginning to look down and out. They were there for the taking. This was the point the batsmen should have pushed on and really punished them. But we didn't. We bimbled along and didn't put any pressure on them.

We are too defensive in the key moments of matches. Root has given us a chance here though. He's probably won us an extra session in which to take 10 wickets. The Windies have been doing this for years. They know they're overmatched in Tests so they design dead tracks and force the opposition to the make the running. I can understand the approach but it must be a bit demoralising for their young bowlers. Gabriel looks like he might have something about him if they were to give him a chance to actually take wickets. I think the key is to make sure the game goes 5 days in order to maximise the tourist revenue. Again, fair enough, but it doesn't create very exciting cricket. I feel like I've watched the same Windies Test on repeat for most of the last decade.

Well a win was very deserved here after Jimmy turned on the style, and some able help from Moeen. Trott will never make an opener, least of all against the Aussies, if they keep him at No2 then i fear he will have another of his episodes where he had to leave the Aussie tour, get him at no 4 where he will produce the goods, Ballance would be more favourable, though wether he has the ability to stand up to the NZ and Aussie attack is another matter

Fair recovery to 237/6.
Excellent patient innings from Cook. A well deserved 100. Only blemish was running out Moeen but he does that himself so he shouldn't complain!

Well he's out now so he won't be boring you any more LiS!
Silly end to a great knock. Hopefully that's a monkey off his back and he can keep hold of this form all summer.

We haven't really batted well and the Windies attack really isn't as bad as all that. A lot of it seems lack of application though I feel sorry for Trott who got a terrific delivery from Taylor. Very much game on here. We need another 100 I feel. The Windies must be fired up - a chance to ram those 'mediocre' comments down Colin Graves throat.

They are mediocre, unfortunately so are too many of our players. They've bowled pretty well but this is test cricket. You expect that. We've given them too many soft wickets and we'd probably have bowled them out for 50 runs fewer had Moeen and Root bowled fewer pies. Very frustrating.

We've given them too many soft wickets and we'd probably have bowled them out for 50 runs fewer had Moeen and Root bowled fewer pies. Very frustrating. Maybe but that was a pretty arrogant comment for a team with a shaky recent record away from home. I think Windies have looked very fired up in this series and they definitely well enough to deserve the chance to steel a share of the spoils. The fact is England went through a period in which we had a world class strike bowler in his prime and a world class spinner; history says that'll win you a lot of Test Matches in all conditions. Now England has an ageing world class strike bowler and very inconsistent spin; that will win you less especially away from home. Anderson has had very little help from others in this series - England won one match off his back and are in with a shout in this one largely due to his contributions. Very few other parts of our lineup have performed to the necessary standard to justify winning Test Matches. We are back to having a lot of players who do good things and are basically decent enough, but we are a bit lacking in match winners outside of our own conditions I think. There's nothing new about that - it's been the case for England team for most of our history. Mainly because England has never really produced World Class match winning spinners; we produce truckloads of very good containing spinners of the Tredwell variety who can win games if the conditions are favourable to them. We don't produce spinners that are a threat across the board. Swann was almost unique in that respect. Windies have gone off well in this run chase. There's going to be big pressure on Root and Ali.
