I thought leaving the Mem when we had lost to Forest Green was bad enough but today was the most embarrassed I have felt following a Rovers match. For those who didn't go I say "You lucky sods!". As a football match it was little short of a total disgrace from a Blue and White aspect and what makes it worst of all is that we didn't even deserve a draw and the performance bordered on that of a Sunday pub side. A punchless attack backed by a non existent midfield and a defence who can only pass to each other with any accuracy at all made Bath look more like the premier side and even assisted with both goals in what can only be described as Schoolboy errors.
I won't blame DC for the defeat or the manner of it because the team he sent out onto the pitch contained players who should have been capable of comfortably beating a Bath side who have hardly set the Conference South alight. I can't think of any player who really came out of the game with any credit. Some put the effort in which would be a positive but against that there was no quality whatsoever in anything they produced on the day. If decisions as regards players in January was based on today's game (which thankfully it isn't) I would send back all the loanees with a "Thanks but no thanks" and transfer list most of the rest of the players who appeared. I will try to mark them but it is very difficult after such an inept performance.
Spiess 5 A mixed game, one excellent save and some good handling but liked like rabbit in headlights when corners came over and was badly at fault for the first goal.
Leadbitter 3 Worth a 5 for his attacking aspects but defensively very poor and hardly worth a mark especially on the second goal where he had ample opportunity to put the ball out but carried it right back towards the goalline and then lost it. On todays performance we may as well say that Lockyers place is cemented for the rest of the season barring injury because despite his restricted attacking ability at least he defends solidly and can be relied upon to not hand the opposition goals.
Trotman 5 Reasonable performance but looked very pedestrian at times and certainly is not Captain material. Strong in the air today but failed to come out with any conviction and allowed his opponent to move away from him most of the time.
Parkes 5.5 MOM The best defender and tried his hardest to bring the ball out of defence and to feed the forwards.
Brown 4.5 Some good runs forward but got caught out on too many occasions and distribution was generally poor.
Balanta 4 The only player of the midfield 4 to have at least some quality on the ball and the ability to beat a player however the amount of this quality which took place was disappointing and he seemed to give up once we went behind.
Clarke 2 Non existent in midfield. At the best a squad player but certainly could not do the "mansell" role which allows Sinclair to run everywhere. As it was Sinclair ran everywhere as usual and clarke was nowhere to be seen and if he was it was generally a pass backwards or a p-ass to the opposition. Slow and pedestrian.
Sinclair 4 Some may say this is harsh as he did run everywhere and his effort could not be faulted however the midfield was crying out for organisation, creative passing and closing down the midfield which to be honest Sinclair only succeeded partially today in the closing down aspect and first half especially his passing was well below par and possession was wasted. Secondly and I blame DC for this ,he is NOT a winger and the quicker DC realises this the better.
Martin 4 To be fair to him he had a reasonable first half and other than one good cross a very poor second half. I have seen enough of him now to know he is not the answer on the wing and about as likely to score as Stuart Campbell. Missed the best chance of the second half with a mediocre touch.
Blissett 3 Won very little but had no support whatsoever.
Taylor 3 I am rating him based on what he is really there for and that is scoring goals. If you play with a targetman then you can't afford to have a player alongside him who rarely gets ina goalscoring position and when he does more often than not misses it. Showed lovely control and tried hard throughout but that does not win you football matches or even as in this case rescue a draw.
Gosling 1 Can't remember him touching the ball and just couldn't understand why you would send Sinclair out wide and him in the middle.
Wall 2 Did very little other than foul his opponent
Goldberg 0 Did he come on???
Referee 6 Fussy but adequate
DC 5 Wouldn't blame him for this defeat- that rests firmly on the shoulders of the players on the pitch but his half time talk certainly didn't inspire a better second half performance and substitutions were mystifying. Hopefully he has learnt that Clarke and Sinclair CANNOT play together in midfield and Sinclair is definitely not a winger.
Haven't enjoyed writing this report but enjoyed the 90 minutes "entertainment" even less. Must go down as one of the worst Rovers performances I have ever seen.
