If everyone had the work ethic of Victorian times the country would be a better place, oh hold on people do but they are the east Europeans I've worked with eastern europeans briefly in a warehouse when I did some temporary work after I was made redundant. In this warehouse you were basically rewarded for working faster, so these guys were absolute b*stards, just obsessed with making money so much they would push you out of the way, throw your pallet to the end of the row while you changed a cage. I hardly think that is something to aspire to, money obsessed crazed lunatics with no manners or common courtesy. You're right we should be aspiring to offer people an alternative to working and supporting them on welfare. Let's just hope those money obsessed east Europeans can pay enough taxes to support the welfare bill.

Obviously I work, have always worked and think if you are fit and healthy then of course you should work, but the EEs have caused wage deflation and taken some jobs, i don't see that the EU can ever work when countries in it are massively unequal, of course people are going to come here if they think they can earn more, but most of them only intend to stay short term and exploit our country, they push wages down and have no respect for us as I learned from my experience. All the time we have unemployment, why should we be accepting immigrants, it makes no sense.

What right does anyone have to say they work harder than someone else, i've done manual labour on minimum wage before, and I'm sure it means working harder than all these idiots making these comments work themselves. Basically you think you deserve more money because you are you, you are better you you you you, and all the poor people can work themselves into an early grave, what a nice man you are!!!!!!!!!

we are slowly regressing to the kind of inequality seen in the Victorian times, surely nobody here thinks that is a good thing? Or is it all I'm alright Jack? If everyone had the work ethic of Victorian times the country would be a better place, oh hold on people do but they are the east Europeans I just love it when people come out with that pig ignorant bull. Those `hardworking` East Europeans` are over here for two reasons. Firstly they are kept to the lives of peasant's,mainly by their own communist governments hence a better quality of life here in good old `Foreign land` and secondly, and more importantly, they get 4/5 times the wage over here for doing the same job in their own countries. Give me 4/5times my wages in construction for doing the same job in Poland, Romania or wherever and I will be on my shanks like a flash. Talk about a myth, that one is up their with the best of them. Would those hardworking Europeans be over here otherwise?

I don't want to appear to be pedantic, or to detract from your post crazytrain, but wasn't the end of Communism in Eastern Europe between the late 1980s and early to mid 1990s?

The cruel truth is that if you're in a job that a lot of other people can do you ain't ever going to be rich. There will always be inequality in society because people will always have different skills, capabilities and levels of commitment. I don't think BRFC or any other small business has a moral obligation to pay higher wages than the market dictates. That's up to government to enforce by ensuring a decent statutory minimum wage. An able bodied person should never be better off on benefits.

True but the rest of the post is accurate. Unless government forces employers to give preference to British Nationals or restricts the amount of money that migrant workers can "send home" the UK will always be very attractive to poorer Europeans.

Of course it was but the standard of life which exists for these countries has improved but still has the communist undertones. Compare it to the UK, Italy, France etc. Just my figure of speech.

Glad we all agree that the EU is allowing the uncontrolled immigration of cheap labour that ultimately drives wages lower. So everyone will be voting Tory or UKIP at the next election

So everyone will be voting Tory or UKIP at the next election "Drives wages lower" wasn't the whole point of this thread about rising wages? Just a thought but if every company did pay the living wage would that make this country even more attractive to the EE's meaning even less jobs for the British? Perhaps meaning more actually means less?

I only know one thing about proponents of the Living Wage: they don't understand inflation. And those who understand inflation possibly dont care about those living below the poverty threshold.

If a member of the catering staff was "moaning" (or try airing concerns/ struggling with etc) how would anyone hear it? By wire tapping their mobiles? A pressure group have been campaigning for clubs to come out and declare they pay the living wage to help improve peoples lives. The more small clubs like Luton that do it the more pressure it puts on filthy rich Premier league clubs to do the same (Chelsea have just come out as the first Prem club to do so which proves it's working). What then happens is peoples lives are transformed, clubs come to represent and respect their local community and the local workforce (and not just playing staff) and everyone feels better off. What's not to like? Oh and it won't drive up inflation - why is it always the poor who can't have more money in case this happens? It's an old trick to convince people to accept the rightness of their inequality. It's not about the poor having more money it's about interference with the market and directing value where the market says there is no more. The argument that this increased liquidity won't increase the rate of inflation has already been proven wrong by one of the proponents of it on this thread: The free availability of credit from mid/late 90s to mid-2000s meant greater liquidity throughout society. If that greater liquidity didn't drive up inflation we would have seen a fairly stable or low level of inflation over that period wouldn't we? Which is what 2008 and the last two years of the last Labour government was famous for; economic stability and low inflation ... wasn't it? I guess you believe in trickle down economics ?

Why would it pay more? Because it can afford to and because it cares about the well being of the local community which (in the case of football clubs especially) it represents. Besides "it" in many cases is represented by super rich chairman and directors who have money to burn (E.G Abramovitch/ Man City's Sheiks). Beyond all this talk of market there actual individuals making decisions based on greed and disregard for working people. Also personally I don't care where people are from they deserve a decent wage either way. As for 'inviting EEs to do cheap labour jobs - I don't think that is what the last govt. did but to keep this thread about football (specifically the role of football clubs) and not simply current affairs I don't want to get into that debate. Ah a labour voter that doesn't want to go there, oh diddums what a surprise eh? If your not willing to consider all the issues that drive wages at both end of the scales it's because you can't cope with the answers, god help the country if people like you vote in another labour government. If that happens it will be time to consider emigrating & leave you with the millions choosing to live on welfare, a government that allows it & a never ending supply of cheap labour from abroad to keep the country afloat. Oh what a s*** future that is I detect an insular little Englander. Cue Rule Brittannia

You do realise neither of the countries you quoted are communist ruled, right ? You do realise that the bulk of longterm unemployed are the indigenous population, right ? Thought not
