Feck me dread to think what the reaction would have been if we had lost, 1 point better off, moved up a place, good day at the office. Home on Saturday and a good chance to keep building another unbeaten run, at least tonight proved that pretty much every striker in our squad doesn't look much of a goalscorer, glad Taylor is no longer a scapegoat.
Anyone who saw Alfreton beat Torquay 4:2 on BT Sport will know that they have the ability to win games in this league, so it puts our performance and point tonight into some more context. (As an aside, what is it about the Alfreton pitch? Many of the Torquay players were slipping over in that game, even in dry conditions, so it was no surprise that Rovers couldn't keep their feet in the constant rain).
I was pleased to note that (compared to the game at Altrincham, where there was a poisonous atmosphere) the majority of the Rovers fans at Alfreton seemed supportive. Unfortunately, I did observe a few fans who have obviously not come to terms with the task before us this year: to get as many points as we can from the twenty-three opponents we face in the Conference Premier, home and away. Four or five fans went to the front of the terraces at the end and yelled dogs abuse at the players. I can't read the minds of the other 310, but I'd like to think that at least a few of them agree with me.
We all know that the goals-for column needs improvement, but we can take a number of positives from the game:
Della-Verde is a class act
Ellis Harrison's control was effective against the tiring Alfreton defence. He worked some good triangles with Brown, Taylor, etc, especially down the left.
Ryan Brunt appears to have overcome his severe fitness problems of last year.
Jamie White's acrobatic shot was a highlight. He hadn't impressed me in sub appearances at the Mem, but might be worthy of a starting place on Saturday.
The players were not bullied out of the game, and were able to restrict Alfreton to few chances.
No heads dropped.
For the second time in four days, Rovers finished the game with a 15-minute power play.
i agree that Harrison looked much better when he came on as he has much better technique. When we did play a few triangles we actually got behind their back line and Brown was unlucky not to score from our best move.
I'm not at all surprised fans who have travelled so far to witness that last night get frustrated. More movement to find space and balls into feet would have made a big difference last night. Second half we started better and the full backs got wide much more quickly. This helped to stretch the play and create space for others.
