Well another 3 points in the bag so at the end of the day that is what we sought to get so objective completed. For a football purist I would suggest the Conference is not for you and the ride this season is not going to be an easy one. The chap who Clarke "chatted" to at the start of the second half is, without doubt, one of these who expects to come out and watch a game of skilful, attractive football and who expects us to cast "smaller" clubs to the sword by at least three or four goals- to him I would say Wake up and smell the Coffee- we have to accept we are a Conference side with mainly average players but..and this is a big but; they are a bunch of players who are always going to be committed to the cause and for this they DESERVE our support at the games. I would say there is still a fair amount of ability in our players that we haven't seen yet which could well need a couple of additions to the squad to bring out. They certainly don't need loud vocal abuse every time something goes wrong which is exactly what this "Supporter" provides, this no use whatsoever to a side who are growing in confidence; if not; as yet in silky skills.
I always say that you have to first win the right to beat the opposition and that means in this division you have to match the opponents effort and combat their style of play. Yesterday it was a team who in Conference terms ,although bottom of the pile, are certainly not on current form and were capable enough to beat Woking away 3-1 in their last League game. Their style is certainly not pretty to watch but is effective- a constant bombardment of high balls whether it be from the foot, the head or more often than not- a very useful but over used long throw. I personally felt that EVERY player did their part in restricting Telford to very few worthwhile attempts and last season under that type of aerial assault we would have come unstuck and probably been beaten by two or three goals.
With the above in mind I just cannot mark ANY of the defenders with less than a six because they all did their main job which is defending to a high standard. What you have to remember as well is that if most of what I call the general play from the opposition is in the air then it is not an easy task to change the game to a good "playing on the ground game" especially if the opposition hassle you at every opportunity and challenge you legally or illegally with the backing of incompetent referees (something which the Conference seem to have in abundance!!) So down to the individual players Puddy 7 Can't fault his performance yesterday as although he had very few shots he dealt with everything competently and proved a more than adequate replacement for Mildenhall. Goalkeeping is not all about shot saving but about command of the area, distribution and the worldlies are a big bonus!! I felt that he dealt with the aerial bombardment superbly and would go as far as to say that he is actually a better keeper than Mildenhall on distribution and dealing with crosses but I would still pick Mildenhall for his shot saving and dare I say ..size.
Lockyer 6 Calm under pressure and a defender with so much ability until it comes to distribution which is something he must continue to work on. He is a centre half who is playing at full back and in fairness is doing a pretty good job and very few wingers (in this League ) are getting the better of him. People must remember as well that Tom is still very much a young player who is still learning the game and doing a much better job of the full back position than he was.
Trotman 7 Just another day at the Office for our best defender this season. His aerial ability alone makes him a formidable defender Unfortunately I fear that his injury is pretty bad and he could be out for weeks ,possibly months. I hope I am wrong because we will certainly miss him.
Parkes 8 MOM His best game so far this season and hopefully he can make this his "Norm". Won most of his battles and looked comfortable throughout. On his game Tom is one of the best defenders in this league and if Trotman is out for a long period we will need him to be at the top of his game consistently.
Brown 6.5 Didn't get forward as much as he would have liked but didn't allow his winger to get past him much and did his main job which is defending well.
Mansell 6.5 Again covered so much of the pitch, defensively he performed very well and certainly battled from beginning to end. In truth he really needs a more enterprising player alongside him BUT it has to be remembered that playing with two wingers it puts a lot more emphasis on these battling qualities as you will often be outnumbered in the middle. IMO he should never have to release the Captains armband as he is the best captain we have had in many years and should now be made Captain on the pitch.
Clarke 6 Like Mansell, covered a lot of ground and also scored a great goal but is not the midfield player we really need as his effectiveness is built entirely around effort rather than technique and forward drive. He is too often lost in games and is too similar in his general game to Mansell which means the defensive duties are generally well performed but that department lacks the Quality in providing killer passes or confidentally holding the ball and bringing the ball out quickly and imposing himself on the game and controlling the pace of the game. I was very impressed with telfords number 20 who IMO controlled the pace of the game because he ALWAYS wanted the ball and rarely gave away possession.
Gosling 5 For me he was lost for long periods of the game which is a great shame because he actually possesses a lot of ability and skill. He does not seem to possess great pace and this quality is sadly lacking in our team.
Monkhouse 5 Very similar comments to Gosling but IMO would be better used in the central midfield area because he does possess the ability to hold on to the ball and the experience and ability in the air but is lost to the game for too long by being played on the wing. I felt his sending off was very harsh in what had been a game with a lot of "physical" battles and as with many of the sending offs given for this offence I did not think the intent was there and a yellow card would have sufficed. I really think referees should be trying their hardest to keep full sides on the pitch especially as it was never a dirty game.
Taylor 6 Provided no goal threat whatsoever but cannot fault his general game. Neat in possession and rarely gave the ball away but can we afford two players up front who don't look likely to score many goals? I wonder if he could be tried as an attacking central midfield player or even out wide but i feel to do this we would need a more natural winger on the other side. (Maybe Balanta could eventually be this winger?)
Harrison 6 A very mixed game from Ellis as often he showed good ability on the ball and obviously has the pace but is he really the answer to our prayers up front? I think not until he can get consistency in his game or find a partner to feed off.
McCrystal 6 Slotted in effortlessly at the back but picked up a needless booking. Distribution will never be any different but if you accept this limitation can do a good job and will always give his all.
Cunnington 5 Didn't really affect the game enough in the short time he was on.
DC- 8 A couple of marks here for the way he dealt with the "supporter". He has brought together a team of workers who give their all for the club and if he can find the answer to both the supply and taking of chances then he will no doubt do a good job. Result wise he cannot be criticised and I am very happy with the position we find ourselves in. If we can cut the gap between us and Barnet by the New Year then I think it is within our capabilities to win this League as we are becoming a very difficult team to beat. One point i will make is that it is very disappointing to see a free kick out wide with five minutes still to go used as a method to waste time rather than score a second goal. Thats ok if you are two minutes from the end but we ended up giving away possession very cheaply and may as well have tried to put their keeper under pressure.
Referee 3 Very poor generally and some mystifying decisions for both sides. Not sure on the "dropped ball back pass incident" because I don't know when the linesman actually went down. If it was just before the pass back then the dropped ball was probably the right decision. He also may have taken into account the height the ball bounced up. We had a similar incident a couple of games back where a defender passed back and the keeper picked it up and no free kick was given so it will probably even out over a season.
Whatever people may think of the performance we competed physically with a very strong ugly game and restricted them to pretty well no opportunities to score and therefore it is a very valuable 3 points and overall probably just about deserved.

Credit to Telford. They battled for every ball doubling up on our players where they could. I don't think they allowed us to play completely dominating the arial battle with there bullying of our players. They were a big physical side and the sort of opposition that doesn't suit our game. Could easily have been beaten by them so overall e points stolen and back to winning ways. UTG

I find running the clock down infuriating, and I often hope it comes back to bite a team on its arse a la Cardiff at Twerton all those years ago. I understand why teams do it, but I wish they wouldn't, and I like to think fortune favours the brave.

Great report, we are starting to become a 'horses for courses' team and the accolades go to DC for that. I very much think if this game had been earlier in the season we would have lost, just think of Altrincham. Great three points.....we just need a striker who can score goals consistently to put less pressure on our defenders which then puts more pressure on our oppenents......UTG !

It seems to be a frustration for many fans that teams dare to try against us and make life difficult.
Sooner these folk remember
a. our guys are doing their best b. the opposition see playing Rovers as a chance for a glory scalp
the sooner peoples blood pressure will come back to normal levels, and can enjoy 3 points.
One nut job told me we have to do better than win 1-0 yesterday. Words fail me (until such time as you get bonus points for extra goals 3 points is the most points awarded per game)
Yes goal difference is important, but only if you are level on points with the team above. And 1-0 wins against teams fighting to beat a big name and frankly fighting for their survival and mortgage payments make sure you keep pace with those above.
Yes we'd all like to see expansive football and 7-0 wins against 'part time sides' (not that part time means anything in this league) but the fact is that isnt the place we are right now so 1-0 wins in meantime will do me just fine.

A fair report, Mr k192.
I want to add my admiration for the patient way the goal was created.
I remember a succession of short "triangular" passes on the left wing by Lee Brown, Andy Monkhouse, and a couple of others, before a firm, low raking pass was pinged across the edge of the box. Its angle made it impossible for Telford to clear, and was eventually picked up by Gosling on the right wing. A couple more passes ensued (with Matt Taylor / Lee Mansell?) before the ball was worked to Ollie Clarke. The patient passing worked an angle for a clear sight of goal, and Ollie's shot beat the keeper more by its accuracy than its power.
A lot of comments about the game on the match thread have criticised the standard of play and the ugliness of the win. But I think the goal (and the build-up) was something for the purists to treasure.

(Maybe Balanta could eventually be this winger?) Harrison 6 A very mixed game from Ellis as often he showed good ability on the ball and obviously has the pace but is he really the answer to our prayers up front? Agree mostly as I do almost all the time with your evaluation, Steve. Would just like to add especially in second half, Taylor's running off the ball was exemplary. He seems to be a good football thinker, and it's a shame his runs aren't picked out more. He also has an engine on him and I applaud his efforts. Just wish he scored more goals! But I guess if he did, he wouldn't be a Conference player as that would tick the all round box. I would like to add: GASHEADS 9. Apart from one incident which I didn't see (the man pays his money so is entitled to his views)I thought we were really loud and turned up in numbers. Again. Great away day, well done everyone whom made the trip. UPTHEGAS!

(Maybe Balanta could eventually be this winger?) Wasnt there yesterday, but that sounds reasonable. We havent played that well thos season, but we are picking up ppints which has to be the main priority. Hopefully we can keep grinding results oit and find someone with a killer pass or killer instinct in January. If we are there or there abouts at that time i am sure we will be a draw for the right player

thoroughly agree with you again, as I do most times to be fair ,fantastic away support yet again.....as for the disgruntled "supporter, and supporters" i despair yet again in your poor attitude to a manager and side trying their very best week in and week out in a god awful conference, shame on all of you. it was 3 points ffs

Let's not cover up for the fact it was a shocking offensive performance, where we scored a goal with probably our only decent move of the match. I wonder if Barnet are playing the same god awful football, or are genuinely going out to win games/score goals?
To say Taylor had a good game is surely starting to wear a bit thin, as surely a striker is on the pitch to score goals? We were relegated last season as we had workmanlike strikers in Beardsley who couldn't score. If we don't get a striker, or two, in who can score the lottery of the Play Offs is the best we can hope for this season.
I've no idea what the ref was up to with the pass back as he clearly originally gave a free kick, watch the YouTube highlights for proof of that, why he changed was a mystery and why Telford players didn't make more of it as that was probably there best chance of the match to score. Although apart from that error Purdey had a very good game. Not sure McChrystal booking was foolish as surely he stopped at least a shot on goal if not a goal.

Personally, and this probably won't be a popular opinion, I would try and sign Telfords number 9 purely on the strength of his throw ins which were better than about 3 quarters of the corners Ive seen at this level. It wouldn't lead to beautiful football but it would surely be worth some goals, which is what we are sorely lacking

Might be better off signing Godfrey Poku ,their number 20 yesterday who to me controlled the pace of the game, always wanted the ball and passed it pretty well too and kept them going forward although his shooting was awful.I also thought Higgins looked a reasonable full back.

Taylor has "a good engine" a good "footballing brain" and "very rarely loses the ball" Sounds like a perfect description of an attacking midfielder to me.

I find running the clock down infuriating, and I often hope it comes back to bite a team on its arse a la Cardiff at Twerton all those years ago. I understand why teams do it, but I wish they wouldn't, and I like to think fortune favours the brave.
after being 2-0 down after 90minutes then up steps the super-sub Christian McLean 2-2 felt like a massive win in our division 3 championship winning season , unbeaten at home all season losing only 5 away
