Canadian Open: Andy Murray beats Lorenzo Sonego as Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans lose..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BFE9/production/_130692194_gettyimages-1584848126.jpg Andy Murray won the US Open in 2012 before success at Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016Andy Murray is through to the second round of the Canadian Open in Toronto after a straight-set victory over Lorenzo Sonego in blustery Toronto. Murray, 36, beat the Italian 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 in two hours and nine minutes at the ATP Masters 1,000 event. The Scot previously won the tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2015. Speaking after his game, Murray said: "I managed to sneak through the tie-break and after that he was obviously a bit disappointed, and I relaxed a little bit." The three-time Grand Slam winner had to save two set points at 5-4 on his own serve, and dropped the first two points of the tie-break, before he won a marathon 88-minute first set. The second second set was more of a formality as Murray backed up an early break with two more and grabbed match point at the first opportunity. Murray will face Australia's Max Purcell in the next round. "Obviously I've had success here in the past," added Murray. "It was a very long time ago, but I have good memories from this tournament. I love playing here and hopefully I can build a bit of momentum." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/13519/production/_130692197_gettyimages-1584827882.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie was beaten 7-5 6-4 by Australia's Alex de Minaur, while compatriot Dan Evans lost to Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo. Norrie, who is ranked 13th in the world, had a first-set point on serve against De Minaur but he struggled with the windy conditions as his poor run of form continued. The 27-year-old then saved two match points in the second set before De Minaur, 24, sealed the tie on his third attempt. Fresh from winning the first ATP 500 title of his career at the Citi Open in Washington DC, British number two Evans fell to defeat against Diallo. World number 21 Evans - who beat Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets on Sunday - lost 7-6 (7-4) 7-5.

National Bank Open 2023: Katie Boulter loses to Coco Gauff in straight sets..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B8EC/production/_130704374_gettyimages-1299877447.jpg Coco Gauff broke Katie Boulter's serve five times on the way to triumphing in one hour and 13 minutes ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/43BC/production/_130704371_gettyimages-1230920665.jpgBritish number one Katie Boulter was swept aside in straight sets by American teenager Coco Gauff in the second round of the National Bank Open. Boulter, 27, had not dropped a set in coming through two qualifying matches and her main-draw opener in Montreal. But she lost 6-2 6-2 to 19-year-old Gauff, who will face Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or the returning Caroline Wozniacki in the last 16. Gauff, ranked seventh in the world, made a blistering start against Boulter on Wednesday as she lost just three points in the first four games of the opening set, twice breaking serve to establish a 4-0 lead. World number 72 Boulter responded with a break of her own and later saved two set points at 5-2 and 40-0 down but Gauff converted the third. The Briton failed to take a break point at the beginning of the second set and was broken three games later before Gauff sealed victory with another break, despite Boulter saving three match points.

Canadian Open: Andy Murray fights hard to overcome Max Purcell in Toronto..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E4E9/production/_130710685_murray1.jpg Andy Murray won the Canadian Open in 2009, 2010 and 2015Andy Murray fought hard to overcome Australian qualifier Max Purcell to reach the last 16 at the Canadian Open. The 36-year-old Briton beat Purcell 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 7-5 in two hours and 47 minutes in Toronto. Murray will face Italian seventh seed Jannik Sinner for a place in the quarter-finals. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/9791/production/_130710883_murray.jpgThere was little to separate Murray and Purcell in the opening stages and although Murray took the first set on a tie-break, world number 78 Purcell rallied in the second to force a deciding set. Purcell, 25, went a break up early but three-time Grand Slam winner Murray held his serve at 4-2 down to start his fightback. At 5-5, Murray was able to hold again and edge ahead before breaking Purcell's serve in the 12th game of the set to win the match. Meanwhile, Murray has spoken of his enjoyment at watching Alcaraz in action - especially when he is taking risks. "The thing that I love about watching him is the freedom that he plays with, and part of that is youth, I think. I just hope he doesn't lose that," Murray told the ATP website. "Sometimes it looks a little bit kamikaze, but he just is totally instinctive. And I love that."

Andy Murray withdraws from Canadian Open with abdominal strain..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/233E/production/_130722090_murray.jpg Andy Murray had beaten Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell at the Canadian Open this weekAndy Murray apologised to the crowd at the Canadian Open after withdrawing from the tournament with an abdominal strain. The 36-year-old Briton was due to face Italian seventh seed Jannik Sinner in the last 16 after beating Max Purcell in the second round. Addressing the fans in Toronto, he said: "I feel like I've let you down." Murray added: "This might be my last time playing here as well. So to finish like this feels rubbish." The Canadian Open alternates between Toronto and Montreal, so the men's event will be staged in the latter next year. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/157D6/production/_130722088_murray2.jpgThis is only Murray's seventh time conceding a walkover in his career. Sinner advances to the quarter-finals and will face Frenchman Gael Monfils on Friday. In a statement, Murray said he had suffered a "very similar issue" during a tournament in Stuttgart last year before Wimbledon, which forced him to miss the event at Queen's Club. "It took me about 10 to 12 days before I was feeling good again," the three-time Grand slam winner added. "This is not as bad but obviously the danger if you compete and play on it is you make it worse. "So, I'll need to see how it develops over the coming days and hopefully feel better in a few days. I'm really sorry. Thank you." The abdominal strain will disrupt Murray's preparations for the final Grand Slam of the season at the US Open, which begins 28th August in New York.

Andy Murray named in Great Britain's Davis Cup team..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DF97/production/_130793275_gettyimages-1513212986.jpg Andy Murray was beaten in the second round by Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon in JulyAndy Murray has returned to Great Britain's Davis Cup team for the ties against Australia, France and Switzerland in Manchester next month. The three-time Grand Slam champion was left out of the squad for the 3-1 win against Colombia in February. Murray, 36, was integral to Britain's 2015 victory - their first Davis Cup win in 79 years. The top two nations in Group B of the group stage in Manchester qualify for November's finals in Malaga. All of GB's ties will be broadcast on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app. Neal Skupski, Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans have also been selected for the 10-time champions who were eliminated in the group stages of last year's Finals. "Having Andy in the team is great. He's the senior statesman, the one who has been there and done it," GB captain Leon Smith told BBC Radio 5 Live. "But we're also fortunate we've got Cam who is top 15 in the world, and who has been top 10 recently and reached the Wimbledon semi-finals last year. "Dan has had tough year but he won Washington title recently - an ATP 500 event - that is the first time he has won at that level. "And our fourth player is Neal who has just picked up the Wimbledon doubles title and is number one in the world. "We have good depth and I'm hoping the players come through the US Open successfully and injury free."

Cincinnati Open: Andy Murray withdraws with abdominal strain..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6EFA/production/_130801482_tv086739260.jpg Murray had to withdraw in Toronto before his third-round match with eventual champion Jannik SinnerBritain's Andy Murray has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open as he bids to recover in time for the US Open. The former world number one, 36, is still suffering from the abdominal strain that forced him to withdraw from the Canadian Open last week. Murray travelled to Cincinnati and hoped to face Karen Khachanov but will now be replaced by a lucky loser. Andy Murray was named in Britain's Davis Cup team on Monday for their Finals group games in Manchester in September. Murray returns after missing GB's win over Colombia in February but first hopes to compete in the US Open, which starts on 28 August. The three-time Grand Slam winner is currently number 36 in the world, his highest ranking since hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, but pulling out of Cincinnati means he is set to miss out on being seeded at the US Open. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/10B3A/production/_130801486_tv086692820.jpg

US Open 2023: When does it start? Schedule, seedings and draw..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3B0A/production/_130841151_swiatek_alcaraz.png World number ones Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz will be defending the US Open singles titles which they won last yearThe world's best players are set to descend on New York for the US Open - their last shot at major glory in 2023. The hard-court tournament is the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the tennis season. Here are all the key details...
When is the US Open 2023?The main draw starts on Monday, 28th August at Flushing Meadows and concludes on Sunday, 10th September. Qualifying begins on Tuesday, 22nd August. Players have to win three qualifying matches to earn a place in the main draw. The women's singles final takes place on Saturday, 9th September, with the men's final concluding the tournament on the Sunday. What time do the matches take place? The day sessions start at 16:00 BST (11:00 local time). The night sessions - which are held on Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium - begin at 00:00 BST (19:00 local time). The singles finals both start at 21:00 BST (16:00 local time). US Open not changing night scheduling in New York Who is playing?Defending champions Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz lead the women's and men's singles fields, with both players set to be the top seed in their respective events. Poland's Swiatek, 22, won in New York for the first time last year and is aiming for her fifth major title after earning her third triumph at the French Open in June. Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova plays in the first major since she became a Grand Slam champion, while Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka is set to be seeded second behind Swiatek. Two-time champion Venus Williams, 43, has been given a wildcard for a record-extending 24th appearance in the Open Era, but her younger sister Serena Williams is not there after retiring last year. Spain's Alcaraz, 20, won his first major at Flushing Meadows 12 months ago, adding the Wimbledon title in July to his Grand Slam tally. Alcaraz is likely to be challenged by 23-time major champion Novak Djokovic, who returns to the US Open for the first time since 2021 after missing last year's event because of Covid-19 protocols. Djokovic's great rival Rafael Nadal is not playing as he recovers from the hip injury that has ruled him out of almost all of the 2023 season. Which British players will be there?Andy Murray, who won the US Open in 2012, is the biggest name British player in the singles draws. The 36-year-old former world number one will be joined in the men's singles by Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans and Jack Draper. Emma Raducanu, who famously won the 2021 US Open as a teenage qualifier, is out as she recovers from wrist and ankle surgeries earlier this year. Two British women - Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage - have direct entry into the singles draw. Harriet Dart, Heather Watson, Katie Swan and Lily Miyazaki will aim to join them by coming through qualifying, with Liam Broady and Jan Choinski looking to do the same in the men's. There will also be a strong British contingent in the doubles, with Wimbledon winner Neal Skupski and two-time defending champion Joe Salisbury leading the way. Alfie Hewett will be defending his men's wheelchair singles title, while Gordon Reid, Lucy Shuker and Andy Lapthorne are also competing in the wheelchair and quad events. When is the US Open draw? The US Open singles draw will take place on Thursday, 24th August. There are 128 players in each draw and 32 will be seeded. Seedings are used to separate the top players and ensure they do not meet in the early rounds at a Grand Slam. They are based on a player's world ranking, which is determined by the points players pick up at tournaments. What is the prize money? The total prize money for the tournament is a record $65m (£51m). On the 50th anniversary of the US Open becoming the first sporting event to pay equal prize money to men and women, it represents an increase of more than 8% from last year's total. The two singles champions will receive $3m (£2.35m). How can I follow the US Open on the BBC?There will be a daily live text commentary on the BBC Sport website and app, as well as live scores, reports, analysis features and all the best content from Wimbledon. You can also listen to radio commentaries - from BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller and the team - across 5 Live and Sports Extra, BBC Sounds, plus the Sport website and app.

Cincinnati Open: Novak Djokovic wins title by beating Carlos Alcaraz as rivalry intensifies..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/48DF/production/_130855681_gettyimages-1628329563.jpgNovak Djokovic avenged his Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz by beating the Spaniard in just under four hours to win the Cincinnati Open. The Serb survived match point in the second set before going on to win 5-7 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-4). Top seed Alcaraz beat Djokovic in five sets in last month's Wimbledon final. "The feeling that I have on the court reminds me a little bit of when I was facing [Rafael] Nadal when we were at our prime," Djokovic said. "I don't think I've played too many matches like this in my life." Djokovic compared the draining win to his Australian Open final victory in 2012, when he defeated Nadal in five hours and 53 minutes. "Each point is a hustle. Each point is a battle. You've got to basically earn every single point, every single shot, regardless of the conditions. It's amazing to be able to experience that with him on the court," Djokovic added. Despite the defeat, Alcaraz will keep the world number one ranking for his US Open title defence. However, Djokovic will return to the top of the rankings if he wins just one match at Flushing Meadows. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/96FF/production/_130855683_gettyimages-1628342454.jpgDjokovic won a record-extending 39th ATP Masters 1000 titleThe world number two moved ahead of Nadal in the all-time men's major list after winning his 23rd Grand Slam title at June's French Open, where he overcame Alcaraz in the semi-finals. Djokovic and Nadal have faced each other 59 times over the past 17 years, while Alcaraz has played just four matches against Djokovic and is tied with the 36-year-old at 2-2. "It's amazing playing against you, sharing the court with you, learning from you," said the 20-year-old Alcaraz, who was tearful after the defeat in Ohio on Sunday. "This match was really close, but I learned a lot from a champion like you. So congratulations to you and your team." After missing out on match point in the second-set tie-break, Alcaraz found himself 5-3 down in the third, but he saved two match points to pull back to 5-4 before breaking Djokovic's serve to level the set. However, Djokovic went 5-4 up on Alcaraz's serve in the tie-break before winning the next two points to claim victory in three hours and 49 minutes - the longest best-of-three-sets final in ATP Tour history. "This rivalry just gets better," Djokovic said. "It gets better and better. [He's an] amazing player. Tons of respect for him. For such a young player to show so much poise in important moments is impressive. "Obviously, three sets today, but almost four hours. You just have to put your hats down to a guy like that. He plays so maturely, handles the pressure so well for a 20-year-old. "We cannot forget how young he is. That's something that is so impressive about him." Both players now head to New York for the US Open where Alcaraz will attempt to defend a Grand Slam for the first time, while Djokovic, bidding for a 24th Grand Slam win, returns after missing last year's tournament because of his Covid vaccination status.

John Isner: American ace record holder to retire after US Open..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/3D98/production/_130886751_gettyimages-1362285784.jpgThe 38-year-old, who has served a record 14,411 aces, has won 16 singles titles, reaching a career-high world ranking of 8th in 2018. He also competed in the longest tennis match in history at Wimbledon in 2010, beating Nicolas Mahut 6-4 3-6 6-7 7-6 70-68 over 11 hours and five minutes. "After 17 years on the ATP Tour, it's time to say goodbye to professional tennis," said Isner. "This transition won't be easy but I'm looking forward to every second of it with my amazing family. "The US Open will be my final event. Time to lace 'em up one last time." Isner served a record 113 aces during his 2010 epic with France's Mahut, which took place over three days and concluded with a 138-game fifth set. His best result at a Grand Slam was also at the All England Club, where he reached the semi-finals in 2018 where he was beaten by Kevin Anderson. Isner was the top-ranked American man in the year-end rankings between 2012-2020 and finished inside the top 20 for a decade from 2010. The draw for the US Open takes place on Thursday, 24th August, with the 1st round beginning on Monday.

US Open 2023: Jack Draper retires injured at Winston-Salem warm-up event..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1E38/production/_130863770_gettyimages-1494303837.jpg Jack Draper injured his left shoulder at the French Open, retiring in his opening match against Argentina's Tomas Martin EtcheverryBritain's Jack Draper suffered another injury scare in the run-up to the US Open after retiring from his second-round match at the Winston-Salem Open. Draper, 21, lost the first set tie-break against Tallon Griekspoor and decided he could not continue. The British number five was playing his first ATP Tour event after almost three months out because of a shoulder injury sustained at the French Open. Draper missed Wimbledon as a result but is hoping to play at the US Open. The final Grand Slam event of the season starts in New York on Monday. Draper, who reached a career-high ranking of 38th in January, has suffered a catalogue of physical problems in his young career. The damage to his shoulder meant he was forced to retire from his French Open main-draw debut and it was the third successive Grand Slam match where his performance was affected by injury. Afterwards, Draper said he "hates being the guy who's injured a lot". He missed the whole of the British grass-court season and, having dropped to 118th in the world, marked his competitive return by reaching the semi-finals of an ATP Challenger Tour event in Winnipeg last week. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/2D75/production/_130873611_draper_ws.jpgHowever, Draper remained cautious going into Winston-Salem. "I think with these sorts of injuries, especially the tendons, you need to be careful with them," Draper, who beat Portugal's Nuno Borges in the first round, told the ATP Tour website. "It takes time and you have to rehab them properly. I wouldn't say I am completely out of the woods, I have to keep on doing the right things for it and hopefully it will be OK and keep improving week by week."

US Open 2023 draw: Andy Murray to play Corentin Moutet in New York..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/3/14630058-d469-4119-aee5-65a3baed30fc.jpgAndy Murray, who won the 2012 US Open title, reached the third round last yearBritain's Andy Murray will play France's Corentin Moutet in the US Open first round as he starts his latest bid to go deep at a Grand Slam. Murray, 36, has not reached the last 16 of a major since 2017. The main draw of the US Open, which is the final Grand Slam event of the year, starts at Flushing Meadows on Monday. Murray has been nursing an abdominal injury which forced him to pull out of recent events in Toronto and Cincinnati. However, the 2012 champion has continued to train and is set to practise in New York on Thursday. Murray, who is ranked 37th in the world, narrowly missed out on a seeding for the US Open, leaving him open to a tough draw against a seeded player. Instead, the Scot was pitted against Moutet, who is ranked 71st and reached the fourth round in New York last year. If Murray beats the Frenchman, he could play Bulgarian 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.

Dart, 27, struggled with her serve in a 6-3 6-4 second-round loss to the Belgian, notching seven double faults and making only 50% of first serves. The match was paused for a brief rain delay at 4-4 in the second set, with the players remaining on the court. They finished the match but the rain got heavier and disrupted the schedule.

Murray set to lead British challengeMurray, 36, has been dealing with an abdominal injury during the build-up, withdrawing from tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati as a result. While the problem left him unable to serve, the former world number one - who won the first of his three major titles at the US Open in 2012 - has been able to train over the past week. Murray is one of six Britons to have earned direct entry into the main draw at Flushing Meadows and is joined by Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage and Jack Draper. Raducanu, however, is absent as she recovers from wrist and ankle surgeries. The 20-year-old, who memorably created history by winning the 2021 title as a teenage qualifier - had the operations in May and is hoping to make a competitive return to the court before the end of the season. Video replays to help umpiresTechnology has been a key part of the sport for many years but will be used for a new purpose at the US Open. The tournament has introduced a video-assist review system for chair umpires to be able to immediately check incidents - double bounces, hindrance and a player touching the ball or the net - if challenged by a player. "We haven't had it before where the chair umpires will have the review at their fingertips," said US Open tournament director Stacey Allaster. One thing that remains the same, though, is the tournament's night schedule. Finishing matches in the early hours has been a regular source of concern for players, but organisers have resisted calls to change its scheduling to avoid potential late conclusions. US Open night sessions start at 19:00 in New York and feature two matches, meaning finishes in the early hours of the morning are common. "At the moment, we are staying the course with two night matches. We will continue to evaluate it," Allaster said.

US Open 2023 qualifying: Liam Broady and Lily Miyazaki win in New York..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0AC8/production/_130906720_bus.png British pair Liam Broady and Lily Miyazaki are aiming to play in the US Open main draw for the first timeBritain's Liam Broady is one more victory from reaching the US Open main draw for the first time after finally completing his second-round qualifier on another rainy day in New York. Broady, 29, started against Dutchman Jesper de Jong on Thursday and clinched a 0-6 7-5 7-5 win over 24 hours later. Fellow Briton Lily Miyazaki is also through to the final qualifying round after beating Valeria Savinykh 6-4 6-4. Play did not start until 16:30 local time on Friday because of heavy rain. The disruption means Broady and Miyazaki will return on Saturday to try and book their spots in the main draws. Broady, seeded 10th in the qualifying event, was unable to serve out victory at 5-4 in the decider, but recovered to break again for 6-5 and secure a meeting with Japan's Sho Shimabukuro in the final round. Miyazaki has never played in the main draw of a Grand Slam event. The 27-year-old, who moved to London aged 10 but only changed allegiance from Japan last year, will achieve that if she beats Slovakian ninth seed Viktoria Hruncakova. To qualify for the final Grand Slam event of the year, which starts at Flushing Meadows on Monday, players must win three matches this week. Six British players have already qualified directly for the main draw in New York as a result of their ranking. Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, Jack Draper, Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage discovered their first-round opponents in Thursday's draw.

US Open 2023: Lily Miyazaki reaches main draw but Liam Broady out..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/AFDD/production/_130912054_miyazaki.jpg Miyazaki has qualified for a Grand Slam event for the first time, having previously been given a wildcard at Wimbledon in 2022British number seven Lily Miyazaki got through to the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time after battling through US Open qualifying. Miyazaki, 27, won 6-3 4-6 6-4 against Slovakian ninth seed Viktoria Hruncakova in New York on Saturday. Miyazaki, who is ranked 199th in the world, won three matches in a rain-affected week to reach the main draw. Fellow Briton Liam Broady missed out on the men's singles after losing 4-6 6-3 3-6 to Japan's Sho Shimabukuro. British number four Broady, 29, has never reached the main draw at Flushing Meadows, although he could get a reprieve as a lucky loser if there are further withdrawals before the tournament starts on Monday. As it stands, Miyazaki's progress means she will be the seventh British player in the singles. She joins Katie Boulter and Jodie Burrage, Britain's two highest-ranked women, in the women's draw, with Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans and Jack Draper set to compete in the men's event. Those six players all earned direct entry on the basis of their world rankings and they all play their opening matches on Tuesday. Miyazaki, who moved to London aged 10 but only changed allegiance from Japan last year, is waiting to find out who she will play against. Her only previous Grand Slam appearance came when she lost in the Wimbledon first round in 2022 after being given a wildcard.

US Open 2023: Andy Murray ready for US Open after no more injury setbacks..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport in New York.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F528/production/_130906726_murray.jpg Andy Murray practised with Danish world number four Holger Rune at Flushing Meadows on SaturdayAndy Murray says he has had no further "issues or setbacks" with an abdominal injury in the build-up to the US Open. The British former world number one, 36, pulled out of events in Toronto and Cincinnati because of the issue. Murray, ranked 37th in the world, has been practising fully at Flushing Meadows this week, with the final Grand Slam of the season starting on Monday. "I think I made the right decision [to rest]," said the Scot, who faces France's Corentin Moutet on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Murray withdrew from the Canadian Open before his last-16 meeting with eventual champion Jannik Sinner. The three-time major champion then decided not to play the following week in Cincinnati. An initial assessment of the issue was inconclusive but further scans when he arrived in New York, which were analysed by Murray's radiologist in the UK, confirmed he had a small tear. "You have to be very careful with that," said Murray, whose recent ranking of 36th was his highest since having the hip resurfacing surgery in 2019 which left him fearing for his career. "You can't protect that when you're playing matches. You're having to use that area a lot, especially when you're serving. "I had to take six or seven days off from serving and slowly build back up. It has not been perfect in that sense but my ab has been OK. "The last few days have been good - no issues or any setbacks in the practices. So that's really good."

Who is Lily Miyazaki ?..Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/28/98c07c9f-a928-4706-9b25-671f0ba70b73.jpgThose outside of British tennis circles might not know too much about the seventh member of Team GB in the US Open singles. Lily Miyazaki, ranked 198th in the world and seventh among the British women, qualified for a Grand Slam for the first time on Saturday. Born in Japan, the 27-year-old spent a few years in Switzerland as a young child before moving to London aged 10. That was a result as her parents moving for her father Yoichi's job in finance, while her mum Akiko is a professional pianist. Miyazaki, who has an undergraduate degree in maths and did an IT management master's which focuses on data science, began representing Great Britain last year. "I wouldn't say I expected myself to qualify, but I've always felt like I've had the level," she said. "This is the eighth time I've played in qualifying so I'm happy to get through." 'This is what I've worked my whole career for'There was not set to be any British interest on day one until Lily Miyazaki fought through qualifying. The British number seven qualified for a Grand Slam event for the first time in New York this week, saying it is what she has "worked my whole career for". Miyazaki, 27, won 6-3 4-6 6-4 against Slovakia's Viktoria Hruncakova in the final round of qualifying on Saturday. "I'm really happy. My mind is still racing. I'm really proud of all the work I've put in," said Miyazaki, who plays Russia's Margarita Betova about 19:00 BST. "This year has been a bit up and down. I've had a few injuries here and there, not like big ones but just a few small ones that kept me out for a week or something. "I played a couple of 25Ks in England at home and I managed to get a few matches under my belt there and I felt like my game was going in the right direction. "Then I came here last Thursday and I felt good in practice. So I think maybe it's just belief that my game is good enough and that's what helped me." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/28/7d894f38-45a7-4d3a-9bcf-9700e3f06355.jpgWhat a proud moment for Lily Miyazaki. The 27-year-old Brit is up and running in the first US Open match of her career. It is the first time she has qualified for a major after her only previous appearance came courtesy of a Wimbledon wildcard in 2022. An enthusiastic cheer for the qualifier with plenty of British fans - like there always is New York - supporting her.
