Andy Murray leads the British challenge..ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/28/2aebb90c-8a0e-41c2-ad4c-72b004984fca.jpgSome news from elsewhere and I can tell you Andy Murray is confident he is ready for his US Open campaign, saying he has had no further "issues or setbacks" with an abdominal injury. The former world number one - who won the first of his three major titles at the US Open in 2012 - withdrew from tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati as a result. But he has been fully training this week before playing his opening match on Tuesday. Murray is one of six Britons to have earned direct entry into the main draw at Flushing Meadows and is joined byCameron Norrie, Dan Evans, Katie Boulter, Jodie BurrageandJack Draper. Emma Raducanu, however, is absent as she recovers from wrist and ankle surgeries. The 20-year-old, who memorably created history by winning the 2021 title as a teenage qualifier - had the operations in May and is hoping to make a competitive return to the court before the end of the season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/133A/production/_130922940_murray.jpg

US Open 2023: Lily Miyazaki wins on New York main-draw debut..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F188/production/_130923816_miyazaki_getty.jpg Lily Miyazaki was making her 2nd main-draw appearance at a Grand Slam after receiving a wildcard for Wimbledon in 2022British qualifier Lily Miyazaki earned her first win at a Grand Slam with a confident display against Margarita Betova on day one of the US Open. The 27-year-old won 6-3 6-3 in New York and her reward is a second-round match against Swiss 15th seed Belinda Bencic. Miyazaki, who was born in Japan and moved to London aged 10, had never previously qualified for a major. She came through three matches to reach the main draw and continued that form against an out-of-sorts Betova. "I'm lost for words right now," said Miyazaki. "Coming into the tournament I didn't expect to be at this stage. I'm so happy and proud of myself. "Playing qualifying helped me because I got matches under my belt and got used to the conditions." Watched on by a healthy number of British fans, including fellow player Jodie Burrage, Miyazaki played solidly throughout and forced Betova into a number of mistakes. When the world number 198 sealed victory on her second match point, she broke out into a beaming smile and lapped up the appreciation of the crowd, some of who were waving Union Jack flags. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/6C54/production/_130923772_miyazaki_getty.jpgMiyazaki's greater confidence against a Russian opponent who has not won this season showed throughout. She regularly posed Betova problems with her consistent returning, using the cross-court forehand in particular to good effect in a smart tactical performance. Betova reached a career-high ranking of 41 in 2016 before a serious knee injury derailed her career. She also took time away from the tour to have her son in late 2021 and, now outside the top 1,000, is playing under a protected ranking. After Betova broke for 3-1 in the first set, she was unable to consolidate in her next service game before a poor volley and double fault at 3-3 swung the momentum towards Miyazaki. Winning five successive games put Miyazaki ahead and she showed composure to fight back from 0-40 down at 2-2 in the second set before decisively breaking Betova in the sixth game. Unable to take a match point on Betova's serve at 5-2, she took another opportunity on her own serve to become the first Briton to reach the second round.

US Open 2023 results: Katie Boulter beats Diane Parry..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9756/production/_130924783_boulter_index.jpg Boulter reached the Wimbledon third round earlier this yearKatie Boulter reached the US Open second round for the first time as she began an action-packed day for the British players with an impressive win. British number one Boulter, 27, won 6-4 6-0 against 20-year-old French opponent Diane Parry on day two in New York. "I've started everyone off really well and hopefully everyone can go out and do their best today," Boulter said. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/29/e3b368b3-c081-4cf7-bfca-a5cc77534234.jpgBoulter climbed to a career-high ranking of 60th in the world earlier this month after a strong summer on the British grass where she won her first WTA title in Nottingham and reached the Wimbledon third round. Those results enabled her to re-establish her place in the top 100, four years after dropping out because of stress fracture to her back. After earning only her second major win outside of Wimbledon, she said: "I want to consolidate my ranking and really show that week in, week out I can play these girls and get a lot of wins against them. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/28/c98f0ef4-e940-481e-8ae1-390f22acd5e9.jpg"That's what's really going to build my confidence. I didn't get the chance to do it before when I was inside 100 and I feel like I finally got my feet settled. "Now is my time to really push on." The Briton needed a little bit of time to work out how to cope with 81st-ranked Parry, who is a former junior world number one and initially posed problems with her sliced backhand. But Boulter remained patient and was quickly able to begin executing her forehand to devastating effect. A single break was enough in the opening set before the world number 61, who hit 31 winners, raised her level in a one-sided second set. Boulter will face Wang Yafan next after the Chinese world number 114 stunned French seventh seed Caroline Garcia 6-4 6-1.

Andy Murray reaches the second round - 'My highest ranking since the metal hip'..Andy Murray after his win on Grandstand: "It was amazing, a brilliant atmosphere. He [Corentin Moutet] is one of the most skilful players on the tour. He has so many ways to disrupt you. "He always causes a little bit of chaos. I hope it was entertaining for everyone. "I am glad to get through in straight sets because the second set was very tight. It was a long one but the way that we play it was probably always going to be that. "It was a lot shorter than most of matches this year! I'm happy to get it done in under three hours. "I had to slowly build my serving up this month but I was happy with how I served today. I can't wait to move on to the next one. "I'm at my highest ranking since I had the metal hip put in. I'm happy with that. It's not been an easy journey. Obviously I want to be ranked higher but this is the best I've played consistently since 2017. "I'm happy to keep going and progressing and am hoping to push my ranking up." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B237/production/_130932654_murray.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/D375/production/_130933145_gettyimages-1632061007.jpg

US Open 2023 results: Carlos Alcaraz through in New York..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/780D/production/_130933703_alcaraz.jpg Carlos Alcaraz is aiming to become the first man to defend his US Open title since Roger Federer in 2008Carlos Alcaraz had a short start to the defence of his US Open men's title after German opponent Dominik Koepfer retired injured midway through their first-round match. The 20-year-old Spaniard led 6-2 3-2 when Koepfer, who rolled his ankle minutes into the match, had to stop. Koepfer, ranked 75th, went over on his ankle in the first game of the match, needing a medical timeout and gamely continuing for an hour before deciding it was best to stop. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15E21/production/_130933698_koepfer.jpgKoepfer looked emotional during his early medical timeout and later hid his head under a towel

US Open 2023: Andy Murray calls VAR debut a 'farce'..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11001/production/_130933696_murray.jpg Andy Murray reached the US Open second round after beating France's Corentin MoutetGrand Slam tennis got its first experience of a video-assist review system at the US Open - but the moment of history was labelled a 'farce' by Andy Murray after the technology malfunctioned. With Britain's Murray serving for victory in his New York first-round match, his opponent Corentin Moutet requested the technology to check a double bounce which was called against him by umpire Louise Engzell. The official pulled out a tablet to watch an instant replay of the incident. But, after a long delay, Engzell announced the video review was "not working". "It took about four minutes to make a decision," said Murray, who was 15-30 down in a game where he was serving for the match. "I'm pro using technology to get to the right calls - but you've got to have it working. When it goes like that, it turns into a bit of a farce." The Swedish umpire being unable to see the replays on her personal screen meant she could not make a ruling, despite the big screens inside the Grandstand court at Flushing Meadows showing her, the players and the crowd what had happened. "This is supposed to be the official feed," Engzell told the two players as she pointed to her tablet. "I have nothing here. VR has stopped working." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/10C19/production/_130933686_murray.jpg

British No 2 Jodie Burrage beat Russian Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-4 under the lights on Court 9 last night. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C084/production/_125548294_gettyimages-1404038996.jpg“I felt a little pressure going on the court after obviously all the Brits winning today,” she smiled. “Wish I hadn't known that going on, but who knows, maybe it helped me. I'm very much following all the results. I sat in the changing room. “They have a little room with about six TVs. I had Andy and Jack on there. I followed the other girls this morning. It's been a really good day for all of us. I did feel the pressure, but it's also a really good day and it puts you in a better mood when other people are winning. “It makes you believe that you can do it a little bit more I think, as well. I guess it helped. A good day for the Brits.” It is the first time there are more than two British female players have won a main draw match in New York since 1987. Burrage will next face world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka. “It's a massive match, probably one of the biggest ones I would have played in my career,” she said. “But go out there, enjoy it like I always do.”

US Open 2023 results: Lily Miyazaki loses to Belinda Bencic in New York..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A04A/production/_130943014_miyazaki.jpg Lily Miyazaki had only played once before in a Grand Slam main draw, when she received a wildcard for Wimbledon in 2022British qualifier Lily Miyazaki saw her memorable US Open run come to an end with a second-round exit against Olympic champion Belinda Bencic. Miyazaki, 27, had never qualified for a Grand Slam main draw until she won three matches to reach the first round. The British number seven backed that up with a straight-set victory over Russia's Margarita Betova. But Bencic was a different proposition and Miyazaki, despite frustrating the Swiss 15th seed, was beaten 6-3 6-3. Nevertheless, Miyazaki will take a lot of confidence and knowledge from an experience at the hard-court Grand Slam which she says could be career-changing. As well as the prize money of £98,000 allowing Miyazaki to take support when she travels the world on the lower-tier ITF Tour, a career-high ranking just outside the top 150 will enable her to enter more prestigious tournaments. "It was a tough match, but I'm still super proud of these couple of weeks," Miyazaki said. "I think I've learnt that if I put my level out there, then I have the game to really disrupt other players' games. "Even [against Bencic] I felt like once I got into the points I was able to play my game and control the points pretty well. "So I think I can take a lot of confidence from that." Miyazaki lost her serve for a fourth time in what proved to be the final game, becoming the first Briton to lose in the singles at Flushing Meadows this year. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/C75A/production/_130943015_miyazaki_bencic.jpgMiyazaki can take encouragement from frustrating childhood opponentMiyazaki was born in Japan and lived in Switzerland before moving to London aged 10, travelling around as a result of her father's job in finance. During her time in the Alpine country, a nine-year-old Miyazaki played Bencic - a prodigious seven-year-old - and remembered the loss because of her young opponent's mentality. Their paths to the Grand Slam stage have been contrasting and Miyazaki had enough self-awareness to admit beating an opponent of Bencic's quality would be tough. Nerves were evident in the opening stages as she lost her first service game and was unable to put Bencic's serve under pressure. Miyazaki won just three receiving points until pushing Bencic to deuce at 4-2, then led 0-30 when the Swiss tried to serve out the opening set. Poor returning from the Briton, seemingly a result of realising she suddenly had a chance, enabled Bencic to recover. However, the 2019 semi-finalist was far from happy. Bencic cast annoyed looks to her team before sealing the opener and angrily threw her racquet when leading 3-2 in the second set. Bencic had been a double break up at 3-0, Miyazaki managing to claw one back, but Bencic refocused to raise her level again. "Belinda takes the ball really early, she redirects the ball really well. You do feel quite under pressure," Miyazaki said. "One of the biggest things at that level is you don't really get any cheap points. "I think there were times for me where my intensity maybe dropped a little bit. I gave her some errors, and I think you just can't do that at that level."

Billie Jean King Cup 2023: Team GB to face Sweden in must-win play-offs..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F599/production/_130937826_gbduringbilliejeankingcup.jpg Great Britain have reached the final of the Billie Jean King Cup on four occasions: 1967, 1971, 1972 and 1981Great Britain will take on Sweden in the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup play-offs on 11-12 November at the Copper Box Arena in London. Anne Keothavong's side missed out on a spot in the finals following their 3-1 loss to France in April's qualifiers. The winners of November's tie will advance to the qualifiers in 2024, while the losers will drop down to the regional events. Great Britain reached the semi-final of last year's event. "We had a really great time at the Copper Box Arena in 2019, securing the win [over Kazakhstan] that saw us return to the World Group for the first time since 1993," said British captain Keothavong. "The atmosphere was fantastic then, and we hope it can be even bigger and better in November. "We love these weeks we get to come together as a team, especially when it's in front of a home crowd, and on a personal level to have international women's tennis on the doorstep of where I grew up and learnt to play is really special." The Billie Jean King Cup was formerly known as the Fed Cup until being renamed in 2020.

US Open 2023 results: Andy Murray loses to Grigor Dimitrov in New York..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15275/production/_130954668_murray.jpg Andy Murray hit 45 unforced errors compared to just 16 winners against Grigor DimitrovAndy Murray's hopes of achieving a long-awaited deep run at a Grand Slam were ended by Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov in the US Open second round. Former world number one Murray, 36, lost 6-3 6-4 6-1 against the 19th seed on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Murray, who is ranked 37th in the world, has not reached the last 16 of a major since resuming his career after hip surgery in 2019. The Scot also lost in the Wimbledon second round last month. Putting together a run at a major remains Murray's prime target in the twilight of his career. Going into the four Grand Slam events with a seeding would, on paper, make that a stronger possibility and falling narrowly short of the top 32 going into the US Open did not help his chances in New York. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/DD45/production/_130954665_murray_loss.jpgThose ambitions were hindered by the Scot pulling out of tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati this month because of an abdominal injury. Having recovered from the issue, Murray played well in his opening-round win over France's Corentin Moutet but his level dropped considerably against the wily Dimitrov. A lot of credit must go to former world number four Dimitrov - coached by Dani Vallverdu, who used to work with Murray - for executing a clear gameplan which set out to frustrate the Briton. Dimitrov's backhand slice regularly took the pace out of the rallies, forcing Murray to trade from the back of the court and making the contest physical with some long duels. It became a tough watch for those supporting Murray, who remains a popular figure at the place where he won the first of his three major titles. After falling a double break behind in the third set, Murray gave a gesture towards his team indicating he was finished and his troubles were encapsulated in a double fault on a second match point for Dimitrov. The 32-year-old, who reached the US Open semi-finals in 2019, will play German 12th seed Alexander Zverev in the last 32. Game, set and match - Dimitrov - Andy Murray 3-6 4-6 1-6 Grigor Dimitrov

US Open 2023 results: Jack Draper wins in New York..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6815/production/_130954662_draper.jpg Jack Draper has reached the US Open third round for the second successive yearDraper put his injury problems behind him with a statement 6-2 6-4 7-5 win over Polish 17th seed Hubert Hurkacz. With his easy power from the baseline, Draper is a hugely exciting talent but his progress has continued to be stalled by a series of injuries. A small muscle tear in his shoulder ruled him out of Wimbledon and, after a similar problem at the recent Winston-Salem Open, feared it could stop him playing at Flushing Meadows. But after what he described as a "mentally-challenging" year, Draper is trying to put the problem "out of his mind" in New York. He responded with another strong performance against Hurkacz, putting plenty of returns into play and drawing errors from his opponent. Draper broke Hurkacz's usually-reliable serve twice in the first set, doing the same in the second as it became increasingly apparent the Pole was struggling physically. Slumped on his chair during a changeover in the third set, Hurkacz called to see the doctor and it looked as though he might have to retire. The former Wimbledon semi-finalist gamely battled on, playing what Draper said was "some of his best tennis", and the British number five focused purely on his own side of the court to seal his progress. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/31/0320b027-b0fe-4e4c-a5cc-b78544eea844.jpg

US Open 2023 results: Katie Boulter wins in New York..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/31/adff188f-8b0d-4766-9cdc-3c8157159b4c.jpgBoulter, who is Britain's top women's player, maintained confidence and composure to fight back against China's Wang Yafan in a 5-7 6-1 6-4 win. Reaching the US Open third round for the first time is the latest success for 27-year-old Boulter in a stellar season. It has taken her time to rebuild confidence and regain her ranking since dropping out of the world's top 100 as a result of a back injury which derailed her career in 2019. But she has climbed to a career-high ranking this year on the back of winning her first WTA title in Nottingham and reaching the Wimbledon third round. Now she has matched her Wimbledon performance at the hard-court Grand Slam in New York, having never previously won a main-draw match there. "I'm super happy, I'm really proud of myself. I had to dig really deep," world number 61 Boulter said. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/8/31/817b5763-4d5a-48f8-9273-298d592f86ee.jpg"I had to battle and go for it at the same time. Tactically, I was trying to be very aggressive, I got a bit tight in the first set and managed to loosen up in the second. "I found ways to win points and it made it a little bit easier for me. Like in her opening win against France's Diane Parry, Boulter took time to find her rhythm and range against qualifier Wang. Wang, 29, took a break from the sport last year but has returned with renewed vigour and came into the match on an 11-match winning streak. Beating French seventh seed Caroline Garcia in the first round further demonstrated her pedigree, but the Briton quickly started to get on top in the first set. Boulter was unable to take three set points on Wang's serve at 5-4 and paid the price as her opponent swung the opener her way. But the Briton responded in style. Finding some bigger hitting, she broke serve three times to quickly level and finished the stronger in a tight decider. Boulter's reward is a meeting with American world number 59 Peyton Stearns on Saturday.

US Open 2023 results: Dan Evans wins in New York..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1045/production/_130956140_evans.jpg Dan Evans has bounced back at the US Open after first-round exits in the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this yearDan Evans set up a US Open meeting with Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz on a day where four Britons reached the third round of the singles in New York. Evans, 33, fought back to beat Dutch opponent Botic van de Zandschulp in a 1-6 6-1 6-3 6-3 victory in round two. Evans followed Katie Boulter, Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie in recording wins on another action-packed day for the British contingent. But Andy Murray and Jodie Burrage were eliminated earlier on Thursday. Evans was the final British player in action and rounded off another successful day for the nation as he reached the last 32 for the sixth time in seven appearances. It has been a strange season for Evans, who had a dearth of wins either side of a surprise title triumph in Washington last month. Against Van de Zandschulp, he struggled on serve and returned poorly in the first set before considerably improving in each department as the match wore on. "It took a bit of time to get myself in the match and I played pretty sensible tennis," said Evans. "I wouldn't say it was my best match level-wise but I did what I had to do". ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/11DCD/production/_130956137_evans_celebrates.jpg

US Open 2023 results: Jack Draper wins v American Michael Mmoh..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6E1A/production/_130968182_draper_arms.jpg Jack Draper has dropped only one set on his way to the US Open last 16Britain's Jack Draper reached the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time at the US Open. Draper, 21, continued to brush off a pre-tournament injury with a 6-4 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over American Michael Mmoh. Draper, who has dropped only one set this week, will play Russian eighth seed Andrey Rublev in the fourth round. "It was a long match for me to come through after a tough year. I'm so happy," he said after beating wildcard Mmoh. Counting a booming serve and fizzing forehand as his key strengths, Draper's talent has never been in doubt. He reached a career-high ranking of 38th in the world at the start of this year after being one of the fastest climbers on the ATP Tour in the previous six months. Moving up from outside the world's top 250 was a result of a string impressive wins, including notable victories against top-10 players Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime. But Draper's progress has been hampered by a series of physical problems, leading to what he described as a "mentally challenging" year. A small muscle tear in his shoulder at the French Open was the latest in a long line of injuries, ruling him out of Wimbledon and stopping him playing competitively until last month. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/BC3A/production/_130968184_draper.jpgA similar problem picked up at the recent Winston-Salem Open led to fears it could stop him playing in New York. However, Draper has been determined to put the issue to the back of his mind and against 89th-ranked Mmoh showed how he is becoming increasingly resolute. After dominating the opening two sets, Draper was pegged back as Mmoh improved. Breaking straight back from losing his serve at the start of the fourth set proved vital for the Briton, enabling him to move 4-2 ahead by taking his opponent's serve again. Serving for the match, Draper faced a break point when 25-year-old Mmoh cracked a thunderous forehand past him but saved it by finding his first serve and moved forward to put away a volley. Mmoh hit another forehand long to tee up match point, Draper again deciding to serve and volley to put away backhand winner before standing with arms outstretched in celebration.
