Rafael Nadal: Spaniard withdraws from Indian Wells and Miami events with hip injury..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9E5C/production/_128804504_gettyimages-1246321237.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/183F1/production/_128331399_110c3235b48291485f370851968ed17b7aa8be10.jpgRafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Masters 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami because of injury. The Spaniard, 36, has not competed since losing in the second round of the Australian Open last month. The 22-time Grand Slam champion was expected to be out for six to eight weeks with a hip injury that hampered his defeat by Mackenzie McDonald. "We wish Rafa continued healing and hope to see him back next year," said Indian Wells director Tommy Haas. Nadal won at the California event - which starts next week - in 2007, 2009 and 2013, and lost in last year's final to American Taylor Fritz. Nadal has been mostly limited to physio and gym work in recent weeks, but was able to begin a gradual return to the court on Monday. He will also miss the Miami Open in three weeks' time. Nadal's next target is likely to be the Monte Carlo Masters, where he is an 11-time champion. The first major event of the European clay court season begins on 9th April. "Took my time off, started rehab, gym and physiotherapy as instructed by the doctors. Getting ready to come back in the best conditions," Nadal tweeted. "I am sad that I won't be able to compete at Indian Wells or Miami. Very sad not to be there. I'll miss all my US fans but I hope to see them later this year during the summer swing," he added.

Dan Evans criticises ATP and WTA threats to strip LTA of pre-Wimbledon events..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1363D/production/_128812497_gettyimages-1156992449.jpgEvans is unhappy with the idea that tournament licences could be sold overseas should the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes continueBritain's Dan Evans criticised the ATP and WTA tours for threatening to strip the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) of pre-Wimbledon events, like Queen's, if Russians and Belarusians stay banned. In 2022, the LTA and All England Club (AELTC) banned entries following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The LTA was fined £1.4m by the ATP and WTA for its move, while Wimbledon was played without rankings points. "It's a sad state of affairs if Queen's wasn't on," Evans told the Times. "I'm not a fan of the threats," the British number two added. "The ATP should not throw stones when they live in glass houses. "Queen's is one of the best and most prestigious tournaments on the tour, which has done a lot for the ATP Tour in its time." The announcement to ban Russian and Belarusian entries was generally well received in the UK but led to the removal of ranking points at Wimbledon and resulted in the large fines. Following an appeal, the fine from the WTA will be halved to £500,000 if players from the two nations are allowed to enter this year. The WTA and ATP Tours have said they will cancel the LTA's membership if it exercises further "discrimination based on nationality", which means traditional tournaments staged at The Queen's Club, Eastbourne and elsewhere in the run-up to Wimbledon could be lost. "I'm a massive advocate for the ATP generally," added Evans. "They do great things but we have to have sensible conversations. "I don't think threatening the LTA with taking away the licence for these events is how it's going to be resolved." There is no threat of Wimbledon not going ahead because it is a Grand Slam tournament, meaning it is not governed by the ATP and WTA tours. "It affects all of the Brits," Evans said. "They're not going to get chances or playing opportunities with a wild card. "I think common sense should prevail. The LTA's hands are tied a little bit as well. This subject goes a bit bigger than tennis federations and governing bodies."

Billie Jean King Cup: Coventry to host Great Britain v France qualifier..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/08C0/production/_128804220_gettyimages-1391627518.jpgEmma Raducanu played in last year's qualifier against the Czech Republic but missed the Finals through injury
ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/13D58/production/_128804218_gettyimages-1391627472.jpgGreat Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against France will be played in Coventry from 14th-15th April. The indoor match at the Coventry Building Society Arena will decide who reaches November's Finals tournament. Last year Anne Keothavong's team lost to Australia in the semi-finals in Glasgow. Former US Open champion and British number one Emma Raducanu was absent for that match due to injury and has also had a disrupted start to 2023. The 20-year-old has played only four matches this season having turned her ankle in Auckland, and then taken time out to train after her second-round exit at the Australian Open. She withdrew from this week's WTA tournament in Austin, Texas, because of tonsillitis. Switzerland are the defending champions in the women's team competition - which was formerly the Fed Cup - and both they and Australia have qualified automatically for this year's Finals. They will be joined by the winners of the nine qualifiers and the host nation, although a venue for the final has not yet been confirmed.

Emma Raducanu 'hopefully' playing at Indian Wells despite wrist injury return..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17EBE/production/_128928979_gettyimages-1457332586.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/534B/production/_128932312_gettyimages-1246321461.jpgEmma Raducanu will "hopefully" be able to play at Indian Wells but says last year's wrist problem has returned. The 20-year-old British number one is due to play Danka Kovinic of Montenegro on Thursday in the 16,000-capacity Stadium 1. But Raducanu had strapping on both of her wrists during Wednesday's one-hour practice session with her coach Sebastian Sachs. "The same issue that I had last year has stared to flare back up," she said. Speaking to BBC Sport, she added: "I've definitely been managing my load. It's something that has just come back, so I'm trying to be as cautious as possible. "I'm going to do everything I can to be there tomorrow. "I think we always play through pain and it's just a matter of how much can you take - I'm looking forward to hopefully being out there tomorrow." The initial injury, which forced Raducanu to end last season early and miss the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Glasgow, only affected her right wrist. There were not too many signs of discomfort in Wednesday's practice session, although she did take her hand off the racquet a couple of times. It was the first time Raducanu had practised since the weekend, and on Tuesday she pulled out of the Eisenhower Cup exhibition event in which she had been due to play mixed doubles with fellow Briton Cameron Norrie. Fresh concerns about her wrist follow a bout of tonsillitis, which cost Raducanu the chance to play in last week's ATX Open in Austin, Texas. "It affected me bad for the short term so I haven't prepared much. I've probably never felt so sick in my life," said Raducanu. "When it rains, it pours. This and the infection - it's obviously a challenge. My preparation hasn't been ideal. I played on the weekend and then I rested it - it's how you manage things when you aren't prepared." Raducanu - the 2021 US Open champion - has been able to play just four matches so far this season.

Indian Wells: Emma Raducanu beats Danka Kovinic..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E7C6/production/_128943395_raducanu.jpgEmma Raducanu won in her first match since losing to Coco Gauff at the Australian Open in mid-January ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/4955/production/_128937781_gettyimages-1247918453.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/3/9/84b39392-1eec-4249-8410-385a238270ae.jpgBritain's Emma Raducanu overcame a build-up disrupted by injury and illness to earn a gutsy first-round win at the prestigious Indian Wells event. Raducanu, 20, was unsure she would be fit enough to play because of a recurring wrist injury, but won 6-2 6-3 against Montenegro's Danka Kovinic. The 2021 US Open champion, ranked 77th, faces Poland's Magda Linette next. Since sensationally winning the US Open as a virtually unknown teenage qualifier, Raducanu has been unable to build on that success as her progress continues to be stalled by fitness problems. Various injuries over the course of 2022 wrecked her chances of finding momentum in her first full year on the WTA Tour and the wrist problem that ended her season returned to threaten her participation in Indian Wells. With tonsillitis also forcing her out of a tournament in Austin last week, the British number one summed up her fortunes by telling BBC Sport: "When it rains, it pours." But an efficient victory over 62nd-ranked Kovinic - in Raducanu's first match since losing to Coco Gauff at the Australian Open - should help lift any lingering gloom. Raducanu did not appear totally over her recent illness and trailed 2-0 in each of the two sets, but grew in confidence as 28-year-old Kovinic produced a stream of errors. Kovinic played some loose shots and struggled with her first-serve percentage in both sets, with Raducanu staying patient and playing smart to grind out a solid win.

Wimbledon 2023: Clare Balding to lead BBC coverage of this year's Championships..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1AC5/production/_128935860_balding2.jpgClare Balding will be the lead presenter for the BBC's coverage of this year's Wimbledon. Balding takes over from Sue Barker, who decided to step down from her role at the end of the 2022 Championships after 30 years of broadcasting live sport for the BBC. "It's a huge honour to be given this responsibility but I am very aware that no one person can fill Sue's shoes," said Balding. Wimbledon takes place from 3rd to 16th July. Balding has worked on Wimbledon as a reporter, commentator and presenter for the BBC since 1995. The award-winning presenter has also worked on other major sporting events for the corporation, including seven summer Olympic Games. Balding added: "This will always be a team effort and we're lucky that the BBC line-up includes former professionals with huge insight as well as wonderful reporters and commentators. "It's my job to bring out the best in them and to help make our viewers feel they have a front-row seat on the greatest sporting stage." Director of BBC Sport Barbara Slater said Balding will bring her "passion and knowledge for the prestigious event" to the viewers watching at home. As with last year, Isa Guha will present the early coverage before Balding takes over later in the day. The partnership between the BBC and the All England Lawn Tennis Club is the longest in sports broadcasting history, spanning more than 85 years on BBC TV and more than 95 years on BBC radio.

Indian Wells: Andy Murray, Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper win to reach third round..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1824F/production/_128959889_gettyimages-1248035805.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1311A/production/_128960187_gettyimages-1472847289.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/8152/production/_128960133_bbc-sport-index-imagery-3-split-images-gradient-b52213ec-31a0-402e-9333-35df04a4e5e3.pngBritish trio Andy Murray, Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper all won on Saturday to reach the third round at Indian Wells. Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, fought back from 4-1 down in the first set to beat Poland's Magda Linette, the 20th seed, 7-6 (7-3) 6-2. She will now face either Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, the 13th seed, or the Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova. Murray beat Moldova's Radu Albot 6-4 6-3 to set up a meeting with Draper, who beat compatriot Dan Evans 6-4 6-2. Raducanu, 20, continued her return to form after shrugging off illness and a recurring wrist injury to beat Danka Kovinic on Thursday. The world number 77 fought back to win the opening set on a tie-break, then eased through the second set for her first back-to-back victories since September. Raducanu suffered an ankle injury before January's Australian Open and tonsillitis forced her to withdraw from last week's Austin Open, while the wrist injury that cut short her 2022 season required attention from a physiotherapist on Saturday. "I feel more positive about my game today," she said. "The first day [against Kovinic] I didn't really know what was going on. "Today I felt pretty decent out there, especially with the conditions. It was really windy and I did well to overcome it."

Indian Wells 2023: Cameron Norrie beats Taro Daniel to reach fourth round..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CE00/production/_128963725_d07cf2105e5253fe943d18fbb6c683244367855b.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie came from behind to beat Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel on Sunday and reach the last 16 at Indian Wells. The 10th seed was a set and 4-1 down in California but won the next five games before clinching the second set. The 2021 champion, 27, then saw out the decider to claim a 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-2 win over the US-born Daniel, 30. "I'm happy to be riding the wave right now but I still have a lot of things to work on," said Norrie. The world number 12 now has 20 wins this season and upset top seed Carlos Alcaraz to win his fifth overall ATP title at the Rio Open last month. Norrie's only previous Masters 1000 title came at Indian Wells in 2021 and his latest visit will continue against either the sixth seed Andrey Rublev of Russia or France's Ugo Humbert. "It was not the prettiest of matches today, but I'll take it," Norrie added. "I should have won that first set. lots of chances and I think it carried over a bit into the second set.
"But I was able to really play point for point and then really come back and play some of my best tennis."

Indian Wells: Jack Draper beats Andy Murray in straight sets to reach last 16..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/125B3/production/_128978157_gettyimages-1473410032.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/D793/production/_128978155_gettyimages-1473415763.jpgJack Draper beat Andy Murray 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 in their first competitive meeting to reach the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters. The 21-year-old will now play US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday. Draper was on Centre Court as an 11-year-old when Murray won Wimbledon for the first time in 2013 and has formed a strong bond with the Scot. "If I was going to say one sporting person who has inspired me the most it would be Andy," Draper told BBC Sport. "To come off court with the win against Andy - I'll never forget that moment." Andy Murray will now move on to Miami, where he is a two-time champion, with at least a week to rest before his first-round match. "In the tie-break, I had a few opportunities but he came up with a really good return on the six-all point and then the second set was tough for me, physically," Murray said. "Just a bit of fatigue to be honest - recently I've played quite a lot of long matches and the first set was very tough physically for both of us, and here it's not that easy to finish points."

Indian Wells: Cameron Norrie's run ended by Frances Tiafoe in quarter-finals..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/351F/production/_128999531_gettyimages-1248347298.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/F8D3/production/_128999636_gettyimages-1473760058.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie's run in Indian Wells ended with an error-strewn defeat against American Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals. Norrie, who won the event in 2021, was well below his best and beaten 6-4 6-4 by the 25-year-old 14th seed. Norrie, 27, the 10th seed, looked unusually flat at times and made 28 unforced errors. Tiafoe will play Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev or Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain in the semi-final. He reached the semi-final of the US Open last year but this is the first time he has reached the last four of a Masters 1000 event. "It is big," he said. "I'm super happy about today. "I have been playing really well all week. I am happy being here." The opening stages of the match were interrupted by drizzle in the desert but afterwards Tiafoe was comfortably the better player in windy conditions. He broke serve at 3-3 in the first set before closing out the set and soon took a 5-2 lead in the second. Norrie won the next two games but Tiafoe closed out the match on his serve on the second attempt. The defeat ends the British singles interest in Indians Wells, one of the most high-profile tournaments outside of the Grand Slams, after Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu were beaten on Tuesday.

Billie Jean King Cup: Emma Raducanu absent as Great Britain name squad for France qualifier..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/988B/production/_129015093_gettyimages-1440608183.jpgGreat Britain have named an unchanged squad to face France in their Billie Jean King Cup qualifier, with Emma Raducanu unavailable for selection. Anne Keothavong's team lost to Australia in the semi-finals of the competition in Glasgow in November. GB's Harriet Dart, Heather Watson, Katie Boulter, Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls will aim to qualify again in Coventry from 14th-15th April. Raducanu has committed to playing in an event in Stuttgart the following week. "I'm pleased to name the same team as the one we had four months ago in Glasgow where we gelled so well, and the team spirit was electric," Keothavong said. "There were some memorable performances across the week to help us reach the semi-finals." She added: "While Emma is unavailable for this tie, we look forward to seeing her back on the team in the near future." British number one Raducanu, who missed last year's Finals because of a wrist injury, reached the fourth round at Indian Wells this week where she lost to world number one Iga Swiatek. The indoor match at the Coventry Building Society Arena will be played as a best-of-five rubbers. Switzerland are the defending champions in the women's team competition - which was formerly known as the Fed Cup - and both they and Australia have qualified automatically for this year's Finals. They will be joined by the winners of the nine qualifiers and the host nation - although a venue for the Finals has not yet been confirmed. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/134CB/production/_129015097_gettyimages-1440607476.jpg

Novak Djokovic: World number one will not play at Miami Open after being denied entry to USichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4990/production/_129023881_whatsubject.jpgWorld number one Novak Djokovic has failed in his bid to play at next week's Miami Open after being denied entry to the United States. The 22-time Grand Slam winner, 35, had applied for special permission to enter the US because he is not vaccinated against Covid-19. The US requires international visitors to be vaccinated and proof will be required until at least 10 April. Djokovic withdrew from the ongoing Indian Wells event for the same reason. "Obviously, we're one of the premier tournaments in the world, we'd like to have the best players that can play," said Miami Open tournament director James Blake. Speaking to the Tennis Channel, he added: "We did all that we could. We tried to talk to the government, but that's out of our hands. We tried, and he wasn't able to play. "Same result that he had in Indian Wells, where I know [fellow tournament director] Tommy Haas did as much as he could. We tried to get Novak Djokovic to be allowed to get an exemption, but that wasn't able to happen. "We'd love to have him, and he's our greatest champion, he's won six times here. Unfortunately, that's way above my pay grade." Serbia's Djokovic missed last year's US Open because of his vaccination status. Djokovic, who also missed last year's Australian Open and was deported from the country because of his vaccination status, has said he would skip Grand Slams rather than have a Covid-19 vaccination. He was permitted to travel to Melbourne in January and won a record-extending 10th Australian Open title, tying Rafael Nadal's men's record of 22 Grand Slam wins.

After a 78-minute opening set, Kazakhstan's Wimbledon champion Rybakina went on to win 7-6 (13-11) 6-4 for her maiden WTA 1000 triumph. It marks her first win over the world number two in five attempts. In January, Belarusian Sabalenka beat Rybakina in three sets in Melbourne to win her first Grand Slam. Sabalenka had dropped just one set en route to the Indian Wells final - her third this season - but under pressure from 10th seed Rybakina, the serving issues that plagued her last year returned as she hit 10 double faults in the first set alone. Rybakina, who beat defending champion and world number one Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, needed six set points - four of which were on her own serve - before she could edge ahead in a lengthy tie-break. The second set proved a considerably quicker affair, as Moscow-born Rybakina broke Sabalenka's serve to love in the first game. After both players saw two break points apiece go begging, Rybakina went a double break up at 5-2 only for her opponent to break back in the next game. But she served out the victory on her first match point and will rise to a career-high position of seventh when the world rankings update on Monday.
