Novak Djokovic: Why can't the next generation stop the Australian Open champion?..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C57B/production/_128455505_djoko.jpg19-year-old Alcaraz, the youngster who looks best placed to stop Djokovic in 2023, beat the Serb in the Madrid Open s/f last year. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/1DE7/production/_128455670_novak_djokovic_getty.jpgShortly after 35-year-old Novak Djokovic despatched another considerably younger player to win a 22nd Grand Slam title, his coach Goran Ivanisevic was asked how long the new Australian Open champion could stay at the top level. The response probably sent a chill through the rest of the ATP Tour. "Definitely two, three more years," said Ivanisevic, who has helped Djokovic win seven of his major titles. "His level is unbelievable. He is from outer space. His brain is working different." Djokovic, who turns 36 in May, showed all facets of his greatness on the way to beating 24-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas in Sunday's Melbourne final. The Serb has won five of the past seven Grand Slams he has played in, although this victory came in a tournament where Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz - the world number one before the event and new leader of the next generation - was ruled out through injury. Pretty much every younger opponent talks before a match about treating Djokovic like any other opponent - playing the man and not the name. But how many truly believe it and don't get overawed? Greece's Tsitsipas was the last of four players at least a decade younger than Djokovic to be beaten by him in Melbourne. In the past four years Djokovic has lost only five of the 45 matches he has played against opponents under the age of 23. Djokovic has won six of his seven Grand Slam finals in that period against players born in the 1990s, with Russia's Daniil Medvedev landing the younger generation's only success in the 2021 US Open. Tsitsipas insists Djokovic's stranglehold on the younger players isn't a "curse". "I don't see this as something annoying. This is very good for the sport, to have competitors like him, to have champions like him," said Tsitsipas, who has lost his past 10 meetings with Djokovic. Whether Tsitsipas sincerely thinks that is a different matter. If he does, it feels like he is an exception. It has been telling that Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev and American Tommy Paul - the players whom Djokovic made light work of in the Australian Open quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively - discussed the dread which players feel when seeing his name in their part of the draw. Rublev, 25, laughed when he said after his last-16 win that he wished Djokovic was in the opposite side - but it was no laughing matter as he became increasingly despondent on the way to a straight-set beating. "A lot of players have a lot of respect for his game," said 25-year-old Paul, who was also despatched in three sets. "No-one really wants to see him on their part of the draw."

‘Remarkable’ Novak Djokovic won Australian Open with ‘three-centimetre tear in his hammy’..
Suggestions that Novak Djokovic exaggerated his injury during his Australian Open title run are way off the mark with tournament director Craig Tiley revealing that scans confirmed he had tear in his hamstring.
Djokovic picked up the injury en route to winning the Adelaide International 1 title and there were initially doubts over his participation in the season-opening Grand Slam.
However, he made it to Melbourne Park and played with a heavily strapped leg and admitted after his second-round win that he considered pulling out of the tournament.
Things, though, improved and by the time he reached the second week he didn’t appear to have any problems, leading some to question whether or not his injury was serious at all.
Djokovic, though, slapped back at his critics, saying: “I leave the doubting to those people – let them doubt.
“Only my injuries are questioned. When some other players are injured, then they are the victims, but when it is me, I am faking it. It is very interesting.
“I don’t feel that I need to prove anything to anyone.
“I have got the MRI, ultrasound and everything else, both from two years ago and now. Whether I will publish that in my documentary or on social media, depends on how I feel. Maybe I will do I it, maybe I won’t.”
His performances improved as the tournament went by and by the time he faced Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final on Sunday he was in supreme form and dismissed the Greek in straight sets to secure at 10th Australian Open title and 22nd career Grand Slam.
During the post-match press conference his coach Goran Ivanisevic said: “Let me put it like this. I don’t say 100%, but 97% of the players, on Saturday when you get results of the MRI, you go straight to the referee office and pull out of the tournament. But not him.”
And now Tiley has also pointed out that he was playing with a tear in his hamstring.
“A lot of the challenges around Novak is that he gets a bad rap,” the Tennis Australia boss told SEN Sportsday.
“But at the end of the day, I don’t think anyone can question his athleticism. This guy I did see, he had a three-centimetre tear in his hammy. Absolutely (I saw the scans), the doctors are going to tell you the truth.
“There was a lot of speculation about whether it was true or not, it’s hard to believe that they can do what they do with those kinds of injuries.
“He’s remarkable, to deal with it extremely professionally.”

Thailand Open: Heather Watson into first quarter-final in 18 months..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1480B/production/_128497938_gettyimages-1244708325.jpgHeather Watson reached her first quarter-final in 18 months with a three-set win over South Korea's Han Na-lae at the Thailand Open. The British number six triumphed 6-3 5-7 6-4 in a match lasting two hours 33 minutes. Watson, 30, will face Chinese seventh seed Wang Xinyu in Hua Hin on Friday. Victory over Han means Watson - currently 160th in WTA rankings - will return to the top 150. She led by a set and a double break before Han fought back to force a deciding set. Watson broke again in the third set, but threw her racquet in frustration when Han again levelled at 4-4, before wrapping up the win with a drop shot on her second match point. Watson lost in the semi-finals of the Birmingham Classic in June 2021, the last time she reached at least the last eight of a WTA Tour event.

Emma Raducanu to play at inaugural ATX Open in Texas from February 27th..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11D6D/production/_128296037_emmaraducanu-2.jpgEmma Raducanu is set to take part at the ATX Open in Texas, her first apperance on the court since her round two exit at the Australian Open at the hands of American teenager Coco Gauff. Emma Raducanu will take part at the inaugural ATX Open in Austin, Texas, alongside the likes of Danielle Collins, Sloane Stephens and Peyton Stearns. The 2021 US Open champion has committed to play at the WTA Tour tournament, which starts on February 27th at Westwood Country Club. "We are thrilled that Emma, the youngest Grand Slam champion in the game today, will be coming to the ATX Open," said Christo Van Rensburg, DropShot Series Tournament Director. "We look forward to her joining Danielle, Sloane and Peyton for our inaugural tournament, and are very excited to know that we will be welcoming them to Austin in less than one month." Raducanu's 2021 New York success made her the youngest women's major champion since Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 2004, and the Briton reached a career-high No 10 in the rankings last year. But she had a disappointing first full season on tour, suffering from injury problems and bad form, and pulled out of the Billie Jean King Cup at the end of the year before returning for the Australian Open earlier this month when she was beaten in the second round by Coco Gauff. The event, which will be the first tournament held in the United States during the WTA's 50th anniversary season, will also feature a 16-team doubles field. Two sessions - one during the day and one in the evening - will be held on each of the first six days of the ATX Open, which runs from February 27th to March 5th.

Thailand Open: Heather Watson beaten by Wang Xinyu in quarter-finals..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11EAE/production/_128509337_gettyimages-1244707326.jpgHeather Watson is out of the Thailand Open after a three-set defeat by Chinese seventh seed Wang Xinyu in the quarter-finals. The British number six was beaten 3-6 7-6 4-6 in Hua Hin. It was the 30-year-old's first last-eight appearance since reaching the semi-finals of the Birmingham Classic in June 2021. Despite defeat, Watson - currently 160th in WTA rankings - will return to the world's top 150. After an even start Wang, 21, reeled off four straight games on her way to taking the first set in 45 minutes. There were eight breaks of serve in the second set where Watson led 4-1 at one stage before being pegged back, eventually taking it on a tie break. The deciding set was much closer, with Wang making the decisive break in the seventh game before twice holding serve to seal the win.

Davis Cup 2023: Great Britain reach Finals as Cameron Norrie seals victory over Colombia..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/178C4/production/_128525469_6fdd3d814144290a96fd36580e47fdc020ee84ad.jpgCameron Norrie sealed Great Britain's place in the Davis Cup Finals group stage as his victory over Colombia's Nicolas Mejia gave the visitors an unassailable 3-1 lead in Bogota. The British number one made it back-to-back straight-set wins at altitude on clay as he beat Mejia 6-4 6-4. It meant Dan Evans was not required to play a final winner-takes-all rubber against Nicolas Barrientos. Evans and Neal Skupski won their doubles contest earlier on Saturday. The British pair defeated former world number ones Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-4 6-4 to turn the tie in GB's favour, after Norrie beat Barrientos on Friday to cancel out Evans' surprise opening loss to the 253rd-ranked Mejia. The challenge of competing 2,566 metres above sea level and using the unfamiliar pressureless balls required to cope with the high altitude led captain Leon Smith to label the trip the "most complicated" his side could have drawn. However, Norrie seized the opportunity to send 10-time winners GB into September's 16-team group stage with a hard-earned win at Pueblo Viejo Country Club. Having punched the thinner air in celebration after forcing a first breakthrough in game seven, world number 11 Norrie was initially frustrated by an immediate response from Mejia, whose final winner prompted the excitable home support to erupt. But the Wimbledon semi-finalist, 27, fired back once more to edge the first set - and he then took firm control as he consolidated a break to move 4-2 ahead in the second. After Mejia once again delighted the crowd by denying Norrie on a first match point, the Briton roared as he served out the contest to love and confirmed GB's progress to September's 16-team Finals, where they will look to improve on last year's group-stage exit.

Emma Raducanu signs up to new mixed doubles event and picks familiar partner..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/51A7/production/_127030902_gettyimages-1243723135.jpgEmma Raducanu has signed up for a new mixed doubles event which is using an unusual format - with the seven-match tournament completed in one night. The 20-year-old will compete in the Eisenhower Cup alongside Cameron Norrie in the new format tournament The former US Open champion is looking to re-build her ranking points after dropping to world No.80 due to an injury-plagued 2022 and poor run of recent results. Raducanu has added the ATX Open in Texas, starting on February 27, to her schedule after being handed a wildcard for next month's Indian Wells Masters. The young Brit saw her Australian Open campaign derailed by an ankle injury she picked up in Auckland ahead of the tournament. Despite winning her first round match the force of world No.6 Coco Gauff was too strong in the second round resulting in Raducanu losing in straight sets. Ahead of the Indian Wells Masters she will partner fellow Brit Norrie in the one-night Eisenhower Cup tournament consisting of the Tie Break Tens format. The frenetic event sees no games or sets but matches decided by a single tie-break with the first team to reach 10 points and lead by a margin of two going through. Taking place at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Tuesday, March 7, there is a big prize on offer with a £166,480 winner takes all first prize. Seven pairs have been confirmed for the event with a further duo to be announced for the eight-team single elimination draw. The British partnership will come up against some formidable opposition with Australian Open women's winner Aryna Sabalenka pairing up with world No.8 Taylor Fritz. Women's world No.1 Iga Swiatek will also be in action alongside Hubert Hurkacz.

Novak Djokovic equals Steffi Graf's record for most weeks as world number one..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/603E/production/_128683642_gettyimages-1246643961.jpgNovak Djokovic has equalled Steffi Graf's record for most weeks as world number one after starting his 377th week at the top of the men's rankings. The 35-year-old Serb has held the record for the most weeks as men's world number one since March 2021. On Monday, he moved level with Germany's Graf, who first rose to the top of the women's rankings in 1987. Djokovic first became world number one in 2011 and like Graf, is a 22-time Grand Slam champion. After first becoming world number one, Graf remained at the top of the rankings for 186 consecutive weeks, a women's record that was later tied by Serena Williams in 2016. Djokovic's longest continuous run at the top was 122 weeks between July 2014 and November 2016. For that record, he trails Roger Federer (237 weeks), Jimmy Connors (160) and Ivan Lendl (157). Djokovic returned to the world number one position for the first time in six months by winning the Australian Open in January. He is currently on 7,070 points, 590 more than Spain's Carlos Alcaraz. The men's world rankings were introduced in 1973, while the women's rankings were introduced two years later.

Andy Murray beats Lorenzo Sonego at Qatar Open after saving match points..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16705/production/_128690919_gettyimages-1246406442.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/118E5/production/_128690917_gettyimages-1246406126.jpgAndy Murray saved three match points and won a final-set tie-break to beat Lorenzo Sonego 4-6 6-1 7-6 (7-4) in the first round of the Qatar Open. The Scot lost his opening service game to love as Sonego went on to claim the first set before Murray raced through the second to level the match. Murray saved three break points when 4-5 down in the decider and then came from 3-0 down in the tie-break to win. "It was really tough," 35-year-old Murray told Amazon Prime. "We've never played or practised against each other. I didn't know exactly how the match was going to go and took a while to get used to his game. "He's a very aggressive player and takes a lot of chances, plays high-risk tennis. "He rolled the dice at the end and it looked like he had the momentum and then, thankfully in the mid-part of that tie-break, he made a couple of mistakes and I managed to turn it around." Murray was playing his first match since being beaten by Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round of the Australian Open in January. Sonego, 27, quickly took the initiative by taking the first game on Murray's serve and the Italian went on to take the opening set without facing a break point. Murray, who is 70th in the men's rankings, quickly addressed that in the second set as he took it in dominant fashion against a player ranked one place lower than him. Both players held their serve in the decider to take the match into a dramatic third-set tie-break, which Murray won to set up a second-round tie against Alexander Zverev.

Qatar Open: Andy Murray beats Alexander Zverev to reach quarter-finals..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13BA2/production/_128720808_murray.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/C672/production/_128720805_murray.jpgAndy Murray continued his eventful start to the season with a notable win over Germany's Alexander Zverev to put him into the Qatar Open quarter-finals. Britain's Murray, 35, dug deep into his physical and mental reserves yet again to win 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 7-5 after an absorbing three-hour match in Doha. "I managed to stay strong, keep fighting and get the break at the end," said the former world number one. French qualifier Alexandre Muller, ranked 170th, awaits Murray next. "I would like to win the matches quicker but Alex is a top player and a great competitor, who always fights until the end," added Scot Murray after upsetting fourth seed Zverev. "In the third set I was hanging on and he was making better chances." It was another gutsy win from Murray in a year where all of his four wins have come in dramatic circumstances. At the Australian Open, he survived a match point to beat Italian 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in the first round and then fought back from two-sets down to win at 4am against Thanasi Kokkinakis in his next match. On Monday, he saved three match points before winning a final-set tie-break to beat Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in Doha.

Qatar Open: Andy Murray beats Alexandre Muller to reach semi-finals..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/6A4D/production/_128731272_murray_gettytwo.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/1C2D/production/_128731270_murray_getty.jpgBritain's Andy Murray reached his first ATP semi-final since June by going the distance again to beat French qualifier Alexandre Muller at the Qatar Open. Murray, 35, fought back to win 4-6 6-1 6-2 against 26-year-old Muller, who was playing in his first ATP quarter-final. The Scot will play Jiri Lehecka in the last four after the 21-year-old Czech beat top seed Andrey Rublev. "He is one of the best young players on the tour, it'll be a big test for me," said former world number one Murray. "He has started the year extremely well, did well at the Australian Open and hits a huge ball." Murray, who last reached the semi-finals of a tournament at the Stuttgart Open, has long been targeting deeper runs and playing against the inexperienced Muller provided a fantastic opportunity. However, the issue for Murray in recent months has been recovering from gruelling battles in time for the next match. All of his four previous wins in 2023 had gone the distance to a deciding set, showcasing Murray's fighting spirit and physical endurance. This quarter-final - less than 24 hours after a long and gutsy win over Germany's former world number two Alexander Zverev - followed the same pattern. Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray, seemingly sensing a quick start would be beneficial after a short turnaround, did that by breaking for 2-0 before a careless third game allowed Muller to break back. From that point the Frenchman relaxed and showed his power on the way to winning the first set in 53 minutes. One of Murray's trademarks is his resilience and he responded by upping his level in the second set. Playing smarter and serving strongly, he denied Muller the time he had in the opening set to pick his shots and Murray's level remained high in the decider. "I had to start going for my shots a lot more first set, I wasn't doing enough with the ball and he was dictating the points," said Murray, who won the Doha title in 2008 and 2009. "I was doing a lot of running and that wouldn't give me the best chance to win the match."

Qatar Open: Andy Murray saves five match points to reach Doha final..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1051C/production/_128744866_murray_gettytwo.jpgAndy Murray produced another remarkable comeback from the brink of defeat, saving five match points to beat Jiri Lehecka and reach the Qatar Open final. The Briton, 35, beat the talented Czech youngster 6-0 3-6 7-6 (8-6) in yet another fluctuating match in Doha. Murray saved two match points on his own serve and three as Lehecka served for the match before somehow rallying to win the deciding tie-break. He will face Daniil Medvedev or Felix Auger-Aliassime in Saturday's final. Murray, who is into his fifth final in Doha and a first overall since June 2022, roared with delight as victory over 21-year-old Lehecka was confirmed and the crowd rose to their feet. Asked how he had fought back, Murray laughed and said: "I don't know - that was one of the most amazing turnarounds I've had in my career. "I have no idea how I managed to turn that one round, to be honest. "I will enjoy this evening and hopefully put on a good performance tomorrow." It caps another astonishing week in Murray's resurgence since his career-saving hip surgery in January 2019. He saved match points in his first-round match in Qatar, and has been taken to three sets in all four at the event. Murray has won three matches from match-point down this year - including in the first round in Qatar - as well as winning all six deciding sets he has contested. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0874/production/_128746120_murrayreaction_getty.jpg

Qatar Open: Andy Murray beaten by Daniil Medvedev in final..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1B03/production/_128751960_andymurray.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/14F9B/production/_128751958_gettyimages-1247473438.jpgAndy Murray's bid for a first ATP Tour title in more than three years ended in a straight-set defeat by Daniil Medvedev in the Qatar Open final. The 35-year-old Briton, whose last win came at the European Open in 2019, lost 6-4 6-4 to the Russian third seed. It was a second title in less than a week for Medvedev, who won the Rotterdam Open on Sunday. Murray had reached the final with four three-set victories, saving eight match points along the way. Having rescued five of those match points against Jiri Lehecka in Friday's semi-final, Murray got off to a laboured start on Saturday with Medvedev securing an early double break and racing to a 4-1 lead. The Scot broke back at 4-2 and recovered to hold serve, but Russian Medvedev closed out the set without any further mishap. Murray had an equally poor start in the second set, losing his opening service game. But the three-time Grand Slam winner rallied from 40-15 down and a superb backhand saw him level the scores at 3-3. However, unforced errors from Murray allowed Medvedev to break again at 5-4 and serve for the title. With the scores at 40-30, the world number eight double-faulted on his first match point, but he saw off Murray with a sublime lob on his second attempt. "Daniil is an incredible player. He is one of my favourite players to watch and one of the best players on the tour," said Murray. "Obviously it didn't finish how I wanted but I had some amazing matches and created some great memories. "I am proud of my week and the work me and my team have done to get me back at this stage." It is a 17th career title for 2021 US Open champion Medvedev who has now beaten Murray in all three of their meetings. "Today was a big fight," he said. "Both of us sometimes were playing bad, then suddenly both of us were playing amazing and I am happy to win."

Emma Raducanu pulls out of Texas tournament with tonsillitis..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/18DD/production/_128756360_hi081681120.jpgEmma Raducanu has withdrawn from this week's WTA tournament in Austin, Texas, because of tonsillitis. The British number one has played only four matches this season having turned her ankle in Auckland, and then taken time out to train after her second-round exit at the Australian Open. The 20-year-old's next target will be the prestigious tournament in Indian Wells, which begins in 10 days. "I'm sorry to have to withdraw from the ATX Open," said Raducanu. "I am currently suffering from tonsillitis and am unable to compete this week." Raducanu had flown to Austin in plenty of time to prepare, but started to feel unwell upon arrival. She will complete her recovery there before flying to southern California. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/14929/production/_128756248_hi081679927.jpg

Andy Murray withdraws from Dubai tournament following run to Qatar final..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D6F2/production/_128762055_gettyimages-1247495167.jpgAndy Murray has pulled out of this week's Dubai Tennis Championships. On Saturday, the Briton, 35, played in his fourth ATP final since undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019. After losing to Daniil Medvedev in the final of the Qatar Open in Doha, Murray said he needed to be "a bit smarter" with managing his body. "Andy has been dealing with a recurring hip injury that has unfortunately forced him out of Dubai," tournament organisers said on Monday. Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray lost 6-4 6-4 to Russian third seed Medvedev at the end of a thrilling week which saw him overcome four three-set matches and eight match points en route to the Doha final. It was the latest remarkable showing from the former world number one, now ranked 52, as he continues his resurgence since his career-saving hip surgery four years ago. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/C644/production/_128765705_gettyimages-1247494831-1.jpg

The Briton recovered from an early break in the opener and then took a 4-2 lead before Kovinic levelled at 4-4. Watson failed to take two set points on her rival's serve in the 12th game but won the tie-break to take the opener. She then kept Kovinic at arm's length in the second set and took her second match point when serving for victory. Watson will play Sloane Stephens or Taylor Townsend in the next round.
