Attendances are higher when we're battling relegation. Apologies, I understand your point now. I suppose that I'd argue that even in the promotion season, we only came on a late run having had a pretty mediocre time of things. It is so long since we had a season of sustained success, that it is difficult to judge the impact on crowds that one might have. Well yeah, it's easy to say in March of a mediocre season "Well there's nothing to play for now so why spend the money?" and I know people who have had that attitude. I suppose during relegation seasons as a fairly superstitious lot football fans will think "If I'm there when it's crunch time at least I can say I tried to help".

....but watching Roverss in the Conference is not very different from watching a L2 game. Of those we have seen at the Mem Wrexham, Halifax, Grimsby etc are certainly on a par with the L2 basement sides. Granted Nuneaton and Telford are not there yet but they are 2 of 7 or 8 sides who will predictably struggle but still both gave us hard games.
I'm enjoying it, winning helps and I think the fans attitude has so far been superb.

So, Otley ....basically you'll not watch the Gas much til we're in League 2.....Glory Hunter or what!! if you think that watching league 2 football is glory hunting then our expectations have been successfully lowered. I was regularly one of the 4000 or so gas heads who watched us at Twerton in our dark days back then and put what little pocket money I had at the time in the bucket collections to keep the club going so do not feel I really need to justify myself! maybe I'll catch the bug again if we really start to show we are capable of mounting a serious promotion challenge, but for now, I'm just a bit disheartened by the whole thing. Maybe I just need to accept that 20 years ago we missed the boat to establish ourselves at championship level and now maybe we have missed the boat to be an established league club. without major investment perhaps I need to come to terms with supporting a lower league 2/upper conference side and enjoy it for what it is.

does that figure include away support?

does that figure include away support? The top figures (5736 vs 6421) are up to date and are based on total attendance. My thinking was that there is not a great deal of difference between the total number of away fans we'll see this season compared with last, because there was a fair number of poorly supported clubs in L2 and "old league names" in the Conference. That is probably not the case as we have now lost the home games with Portsmouth, Plymouth, Oxford and Newport which would have sold more away tickets than any of the teams coming this year. Even the "derby" with FGR will probably only see 300 or so away fans. But I suppose my point is that even though we are at an all time low in terms of division, there are signs that we might do pretty well at home this year - so wouldn't it be better to see Rovers win at the Mem in the Conference, than struggle at the Mem in L2? If you ignore the title of the competition, the quality of the experience may even be better.

whether there are 100, 300 or 1200 away fans we can pull in crowds of 6k+ easily if we have a winning team and i would expect to see 8k+ should we be top and looking to at promotion. the key is actually enjoying what you are watching and after 7 yrs of dross winning games at home although a bit unusual is bringing the enjoyment back for me. The only thing that a larger following of the away fans bring is an increase in atmosphere.

I feel a controversial post.....
If you stay away, I think you have everything upside down. Faithfully and true my arse.
The "paying good money" argument sounds very much like s**thead talk to me. The money you pay buys you a seat. You are not buying an ego boosting win, as there is an opposition team who similarly have fans who have paid. Withdrawing support at this time is the worst way to harm your team when you need them most. Ill be called a rose tinting happy chapter for this, but it's better than a crotchety bad loser who can't face up to their responsibilities as a fan. I will alwAys welcome you back, we need you. None of this "we don't want this sort of fan". We do. We need you to turn up and show the world what tough mettle lies within the heart of blue and white.
Your rivals, the red menace, are laughing at you staying away. They want you giving up hope!
Fight for god sake, get out of your grief hole and fight!

Also, when we're back in the Championship, you can say 'I was there.' Of course, everyone will be saying 'I was there.' But you won't be lying.

I don't know about anyone else but coming to Rovers on a Saturday afternoon was something I looked forward to and it would counter a mundane weeks work. It was an escape, somewhere to let off steam and enjoy the banter with the guys that I sat/ stood next to at the ground.
It had ceased to become that and actually it was making my weekends gloomier.
Its all very well suggesting that the supporters should fight the apathy but we needed a lead on the pitch and at last it looks as if we are getting one

I've only watched two games this season. If there is something better to do (IMO) or someone better to spend my time with, then sorry, Conference football loses out!
I'm happy that the current squad are putting in the effort (losing to Braintree & Altrincham aside!), and the skill level is better than last season. However, the opposition is non-league and therefore pay-on-the-day prices should reflect this!

I was there on our last day in the football league...I will have been there for several dull Tuesday evening conference games...I was there throughout Twerton. I was even there in the last days of eastville.
I was also there at wembely, millennium stadium at at Ashton gate (to see us win and loose)
If we ever get back to the big time I will have no problem saying "I was there".
However, I will pick and choose my games this year if that's ok.

Just reflecting that crowds had stood up reasonably well, despite dropping out of the league and that the fare on offer might be surprisingly good for anyone who has stayed away.

Yeah, I didn't mean to imply you had to turn up to every game to call yourself a supporter, either.

17 consecutive years a season ticket holder came to an end in the summer. Now picking and choosing games.
Reasons, part financial (had second child), part want to spend time with people who give me something back (my kids) and partly because the Football was so s**te it was horrible. Also had an unsavoury experience with another supporter last season so decided to step back this year.
Much less stressful, enjoying the games I do go to. Much more to life than BRFC.

Why are you here then, exactly? Eh? Where have I said that I detest Rovers? Where have I said I would never go again? Rovers have been, and will continue to play a pretty big part of my life. I have made some great friends through them. However, life changes and lack of enjoyment make me appreciate that there are other things a bit more important than Rovers, hence why I am taking a step back this year. Will more than likely get a ST again next year. Does that answer your question? Not that any gashead needs to justify why/why not they are attending games anyway.

No, I require evidence and attendance records to make a proper evaluation.
Just the last comment which I was responding to :-)
