With 2 signed today, I’m very happy with our summer recruitment. Let’s hope we’ll all be happy as the season develops
But the other thread got me thinking about all the disappointing ones over the years….
Well-upholstered Derek O'Riordan Tom nice haircut Nichols Looked nice but goalless Luke James The one who got a hat trick at Brentford away on his debut and did nothing at all after Jevani Brown John Bambi-on-ice Akinde Chris Beardsley Kaid Mohammed Chris fast-but-headless Zebrowski
Any more?

Going back a bit further the two pie gobbling Bobs - Lee and Newton were awful. Newton was a good player and scored for fun at Port Vale but was way past his use by date when we had him.
Personally didn’t get the dislike of Tom Nicholls. Reasonable player in there in the right team - just didn’t do it for us.
The two Pauls - Tait and Bannon weren’t very good but were tryers so can’t fault them for that.
Lee Thorpe was useless as was Stefan Payne. Also in the not very good bucket albeit fleetingly for us were Lee Matthews, Joe Anyinsah, Stephen Gillespie and Bo Henriksen.
Finally who can forget the magnificent talents of Moussa Dagnogo, Michele DiPiedi and Jefferson Louis (shudder)

I can’t think of a player with more self-regard or worse attitude!

I remember Mickey Evans and Martin Cameron both being terrible strikers and both having quite strange medical issues. I can’t believe we signed a player who contracted gout!!

Justin Richards. Couldn`t have put the ball in the net, if he`d been the only player on the pitch.

I can vaguely recall that an evening fixture at the Mem,against Hartlepool, which was abandoned after around 7 minutes ( ground frozen in places) and Cameron could have had two goals within that time spell, not sure if he had hit the post with a shot,

Eveything you want to know about our new striker
SHAQAI TYREECE STEVEN FORDE Born 5.5.2004 Watford 5’ 9”; 11 st 2 lbs F Career: 2013 Watford (4.7.22 professional); 25.2.22 Kings Langley (loan); 28.12.22 York City (loan); 14.8.23 Orient (loan) [26+14,9]; 30.8.24 Bristol Rovers undisclosed. It was perceived as a calculated gamble when manager Matt Taylor signed strong striker Shaq Forde on a three-year deal on Transfer Deadline Day in August 2024. The young striker arrives at The Mem with a great deal of potential, having been named Young Player of the Year both at Orient in 2023-24, when he had been playing alongside Ruel Sotiriou, and also at Watford in 2021-22. Fabian Forde, who had played eight minutes of a League game for Watford against Burnley in May 2001 and won two caps with Barbados, saw his two sons on his former club’s books, Romari moving to Arsenal Under-18s, whilst Shaq followed in his footsteps with sixteen minutes in the Hornets’ side for an FA Cup-tie against Leicester City in January 2022. He also managed to score three goals in five FA Youth Cup appearances in 2022-23. Loaned out to Kings Langley, he scored two goals in three Southern League appearances, registering a goal and an assist as well as winning a penalty in his first game, a 4-0 victory over Wimborne Town. Creative, powerful and used to bursting in from the right onto his stronger left foot, Forde scored nine goals each at York and Orient in further loan spells; his goals in 13(+7) National League matches at York City included a January 2023 hat-trick against Maidstone United, when two first-half goals were succeeded by a strike eight minutes from time in a 4-1 win. At Orient, he had scored nine times in League One, played in both fixtures against Rovers, scored a brace of first-half goals at home to Carlisle United in February 2024 and had been sent off in a Football League Trophy game at Gillingham in September 2023. We paid £100K for Bernard Mensah.....from his brief stay, I recall he wasn't bad at running in straight lines!

In the replayed match on 12th February 2002 we lost 0-1, Darrell Clarke aged 24 came off the bench to play in the 81st minute.

So wouldn't be on my list

One more to add to the mix - Scott Rendell. 5 games 0 gosls. Watched him trundle around the pitch vs Westbury on FA Cup QR1 today for AFC Totton, just in front of a trundling Charlie Austin. He did score Totton’s late consolation goal as they were on the end of an upset

Remember Evans came to us on the back of a quite impressive loan spell, and had also scored goals in the PL for Southampton. Geoff Dunford described him as the club's worst-ever signing when dismissing a Holloway whinge about the board not backing him when he was manager. Payne for me was a poor signing from even before he played for us. He was a panic buy. I think he scored something like 12 or 13 in the previous season but a considerable number of them were pens. If you remember his introductory photo session with the club, it spoke volumes - he looked like he had just trodden in something and would rather have been anywhere else. Strangely, he had a good debut but it was all downhill from there. I noticed that some people have mentioned Lee Thorpe - as I recall, he was actually the foil for Agogo, in the same way that Heskey was for other players throughout his career. Paul Tait was a not very good player in a useless side. Riordan was an example of 'higher league' managers and players showing insufficient respect for the level they are actually managing at. McGhee, like Barton, had no respect for D3, and thought all he needed to do was bring in players with an established reputation in a higher league.

So yes wouldn’t make the awful list but definitely on the mediocre one. I also didn’t think Martin Cameron was that bad. Scored a fantastic goal against the s**theads where he brought the ball down from an aerial pass and banged it into the top corner from about 30 yards out. Always seemed to me that he needed a good hard preseason to get fully fit and prob better dietary habits if he suffered from gout. IIRC he got injured after about 30 games for us and never played in the quarters again. No idea what happened to him after that. Think we were unlucky with Micky Evans too. Had glandular fever and was rubbish in his time here but great for the Janners. Perhaps recovered by the time he moved there

Bob Lee actually scored 2 for us??? My memory must be a bit off as I was certain he was as prolific as Luke James in front of goal..
Tait’s record also better than I thought. Deffo off the list though he was still pretty mediocre really
Saw Mensah at Redditch two seasons ago and he was rubbish at that level too.
Nathan Blissett another candidate for the list

Nathan Blissett another candidate for the list Tait was actually decent, but was in the Grayson era of wasters, plus he was very light weight but his record was ok. I remember he scored this delightful chip in front of the Thatchers end in a mid weekend game, or Friday night game on Sky against Hull.

Bannon’s record was ok, 8 in 29 is a fair return. He Should not be on the list. I remember the day he was signed from Carlisle, had a lumbering swagger about him and often tripped over his own feet, but he was a decent footballer. Passed away in 2016 RIP Paul.

I wouldn’t describe him as decent though I also remember the chipped goal which was a rare moment of quality from him. Some dreadful players in that era - Rob Quinn who would come second to a road cone in a midfield battle being about the worst. Bannon’s record better than I thought too though I remember him as being bot very good either
