Yes, but this Government are actually talking with and trying to work with the Europeans. The previous lot didn't want to be seen to be too close to Europe for fear their Brexiteers like the ERG Group would think they were trying to backtrack on Brexit.

Keir Starmer's top aide Sue Gray paid more than the PM..by Chris Mason, Political editori.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/18/13/89820623-0-image-a-15_1726662153872.jpgSir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff received a pay rise after the election which means she is now paid more than the prime minister. The BBC has been told that Sue Gray asked for and was given a salary of £170,000 - £3,000 more than the PM and more than any cabinet minister – or her Conservative predecessor. One source told the BBC: "It was suggested that she might want to go for a few thousand pounds less than the prime minister to avoid this very story. She declined." A government source close to Ms Gray said this claim was "categorically untrue" and she had "had no involvement in any decision on her pay". The decision has ignited a row within government over Ms Gray, whose report while a senior civil servant into parties in Downing Street during the pandemic contributed to the downfall of Boris Johnson. She then went on to work as a Labour Party adviser. Her wide-ranging role as the prime minister's chief of staff includes controlling access to the PM and helping to ensure the government's policies are put into action. Her Conservative predecessor Liam, now Lord, Booth Smith, who did the job under Rishi Sunak, was paid at the upper end of the highest pay band for special advisers, between £140,000 and £145,000 a year, external. The boost in Ms Gray’s pay comes after the prime minister signed off a rebanding of the salaries for special advisers shortly after taking office. The government says the rebanding was done by officials, not by Ms Gray herself, and her salary is not at the top of the new highest band for special advisers. News of Ms Gray’s pay rise, briefed to the BBC by a number of Whitehall sources, is the latest in a line of leaks about her which paint a picture of fractious relationships at the very top of government, just months into Labour’s tenure. "It speaks to the dysfunctional way No10 is being run - no political judgement, an increasingly grand Sue who considers herself to be the deputy prime minister, hence the salary and no other voice for the prime minister to hear as everything gets run through Sue," one insider told the BBC. The prime minister earns £166,786. One angry government insider branded Ms Gray's pay "the highest ever special adviser salary in the history of special advisers". Others in government speak passionately in Ms Gray’s defence and believe there is a misplaced and deeply personal campaign against her which is grossly unfair. A government source said "any questions should be directed at the process and not an individual". Asked about Ms Gray being paid more than the PM, Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: "We’re very lucky to have Sue."

Small beer: Study calls on government to shrink pints..by Sam Francis, Political reporteri.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/18/01/89798789-13862259-image-a-50_1726617734833.jpgA sobering discovery has led to Cambridge University academics calling on the government to stop serving beer in pints to reduce Britain’s alcohol intake. A study found , externalthat beer consumption dropped by 10% when pubs shelved pint glasses and served customers with glasses two thirds the size instead. That could be enough to make an impact in the fight against several forms of cancer and other health issues linked to excessive drinking, researchers argued. The government has no plans to remove pints as the largest serving size of draught beer, but former Tory cabinet minister Lord Vaizey told the BBC he thought it was "a good idea" that should not be "dismissed out of hand". Speaking on BBC Two's Politics Live, the former culture secretary said offering "people what looks like a pint, feels like a pint but isn’t a pint which means you end up drinking perhaps less and get healthier". Researchers found drinkers tend to stick to a specific number of servings when drinking at a pub, regardless of size. And at 568ml the imperial pint - Britain’s preferred measure for ales since the 17th century - is larger than typical servings in the US (473ml), Belgium (250ml), France (330ml), and Germany (500ml). In a similar trial in January, wine sales fell when the largest glass size, typically 250ml, was scrapped. Researchers asked more than 1,700 pubs, bars and restaurants to participate in a trial to say if the same trick worked for beer. Only 13 accepted, despite compensation offers for lost sales. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/18/08/78199195-13862259-Data_gathered_by_the_World_Health_Organization_and_compiled_by_O-a-2_1726643057557.jpgThe study found customers did not complain about the smaller beer measures and on average venues found number of units of alcohol that were sold fell by about 8%. Of the 12 pubs in the final study, an average of nearly five fewer pints (2.77 litres) of beer and cider were sold per day when pint glasses were replaced. There was a 7% increase in the amount of wine purchased. Labour MP Josh Simons - an ally of prime minister Sir Keir Starmer - said he would not back any plans to remove pints as the top measure of drinks. Speaking to the BBC he said: "I love a pint and leader of the Labour Party Keir Starmer loves a pint. "Pubs are places where people come together - they are public goods in a sense." Simons said he was "not comfortable" with the government dictating glass sizes. Pints were "what it means to be drinking in a British pub," he added. During the election campaign Labour promised a greater emphasis on encouraging healthier lifestyles including tackling obesity, smoking, and alcohol-related harm - alongside shifting the focus of the NHS from treating illness to preventing it. Sir Keir has confirmed the government is looking at tougher rules on smoking in pub gardens and other outside spaces to reduce the number of preventable deaths linked to tobacco use. But on Wednesday, Health Secretary Wes Streeting insisted Labour did not want to be the "fun police". Speaking at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) think tank, Streeting said he would make changes "with people" and not "to people".

Sounds like a good idea so it probably wont happen, I expect they will ban advertising on beer mats, they just seem to tinker around the edges of problems instead of getting on and sorting them out.

This is great and very entertaining to read. The worst government ever in British history after 11 weeks.
And to think they have the brass neck to accuse Remainers of being bitter about not getting their way.
The one consolation for me is that Reform will never have to face the accusation of being bad in government. It helps me sleep easy at night.

Nothing sordid, this is what happens within the Civil Service, etc. I doubt Starmer just added the money, if there are pay bands then that isn't something changed overnight. The real news here is that some are out to undermine Sue Grey with drip fed stories.

The British public have noticed as Starmer and Co slide further down the polls.Still leading but heading downwards.
