was when DC was manager. Just saying I've spent way too many hours / days trying to analyse why I have become so detached from something I was so committed to. For me the 'problem' goes back to the despicable snake departure. DC then spent an extortionate amount of money on Tom Nichols to replace him in the summer window, and from that point on, it's been a slow motion car crash. Sacking DC made me angry. Maybe I've never felt the same about the Club since then. Wael spent lots of money and it got us nowhere. A benevolent fool. Then the appalling decision to hire the scouse thug. The slow motion car crash speeded up. I watch from afar. Shaking my head.

For me my most exciting period was under Holloway even though we never won anything I think that is when we played our best football.we could do with his enthusiasm and contacts now.

I think it is an age thing with me, the older I have become the less committed and enthused I have become, still ,probably a good thing I suppose as I am not really that bothered how Saturdays now ‘ six pointer ‘ pans out ! What will be will be.

was when DC was manager. Just saying Not towards the end, because we would have ended back up in L2 had he remained manager. However, I don't think people felt any great degree of attachment to the club under Coughlan or Barton TBH. People forget the Irishman wasn't particularly liked and his football was, to put it kindly, somewhat primitive. Barton alienated people for other reasons. Now, I think people are alienated by the running of the club, which seems unprofessional and detached. They are also concerned by the utter dross that is being served up at present. However, its important to see in broader perspective. This season we have beaten Portsmouth, Bolton, Charlton and Oxford - four of the top six sides. All these wins came under MT. Yes, the current form is the worst I have seen in my time supporting the club (worse than the relegation from what is now the championship or relegation to the conference). However, MT should be given the first ten games of next season. No substantial improvement (further regression isn't possible), and we need to go our separate ways...

For me i have always been enthusiastic about watching Rovers, good and bad, they are my team that i will always follow.
The 108 game era of David Williams was very good for me, P108, W51, D28, L29 = 47.2 win rate and 2 Gloucestershire Cup wins.
Francis, Ward, Holloway and Trollope helped by Lenny all had lots of good players and played good stuff with the round thing...
DC got it going again after a few very poor seasons, GC continued the good times but left and there's not been a lot since..

Megson, Francis, Holloway, Rofe, Ward, DC, Coughlan era’s peaked my enthusiasm. I guess my enthusiasm has been tidal since early 60’s, but at least my enthusiasm for Rovers has endured. Owner issues have by far been the strongest negatives to curb my enthusiasm over this whole period, and by a country mile, excluding B***** of course. It has always seemed to me that whenever Rovers are about to climb the football pyramid, the Owner Management fail’s us in the final push for glory.

Owner issues have by far been the strongest negatives to curb my enthusiasm over this whole period, and by a country mile, excluding B***** of course. It has always seemed to me that whenever Rovers are about to climb the football pyramid, the Owner Management fail’s us in the final push for glory. For all the criticism that was thrown their way, no Dunfords, no party. We don't know who the current owners are and we don't know what their agenda is, just as we didn't with the Al-Qadis. The complacency, incompetence and even outright laziness they have shown to date (remember how long it took to appoint MT in the first place?) doesn't bode well for the future. At the time, we deluded ourselves that the sacking of JB was somehow related to his (generally poor) performance as manager, but I think what has come out since has reinforced the belief that there was stuff going on behind the scenes. In other words, it wasn't a decisive action, but was them reacting to something (or various things) that created a kind of critical mass that compelled them to belatedly take action. Say what you like about Geoff Dunford (and a lot of people did), but I least had the sense that, even if the worst came to the worst, there would still be a club at the end of it. With the current owners, I'm not so sure. This is the sharpest downturn in performance I've experienced since my support of the club began in the early 1990s. Even the championship and conference relegations weren't this abrupt. However, as I have commented in a separate thread, we just need to write this season off, give MT the first ten games of next season, and then see where we are.

I was always excited by a Bill Dodgin team, never much danger of not scoring under Bill, although he had a poor run in 1971 when we couldn’t win at home from January to April iirc which cost us promotion. The promotion team of ‘73/‘74 was great esp knowing we were going up all season. But I have struggled to be excited by anything this century. Even in the 3 promotions from League 2 we weren’t very good until the end of the season and promotion was more about relief than joy. I enjoyed the Conference season but it was a very low bar and again the Grimsby win was more relief than happiness.
I think I could get excited if I thought we were well run with a decent chance of having a decent season in League 1, something I took for granted in the 60s, 70s, 80s and the 90s. Up until a few weeks ago I thought this season was going to be another decent consolidation in League 1 but it’s gone very wrong in the past month. I just console myself with the thought I know a few Torquay fans, several Yeovil fans and a Hartlepool fan so it could be far worse. But I come down to earth when I go to AFCB and sit with my regulars and think we used to beat this lot (not at Dean Court obviously! Well not often) regularly. Now they just feel sympathy or have even forgotten who BRFC are.
Although not exciting, with how we have finished this season I think the next few weeks will be interesting. Not sure if Taylor will survive and we certainly can’t take replacing him taking as long as last time. Our ‘new’ owners are on a very, very steep learning curve and I’m not convinced they will be up to the task.
UTG!

Although our owners over those decades weren’t faultless they ran a tight ship because they didn’t have the luxury of millions being readily available from family resources. Enjoyment of the sport was their main motivation and, because they kept things tight, when opportunities arose to increase that enjoyment they were able to take them. I’m thinking of the signings of Bruce Bannister in 1971 for 23000 and Alan Warboys in 1972 for 35000. What would those figures equate to today ? There are big question marks about the new owners but having seen how throwing thirty million at Rovers over the past seven years hasn’t worked they must know we have to try something different. Running a tight ship and ensuring cash is available to seize the right opportunities as and when they come along can be exciting so long as fans know what’s going on and are made to feel part of it.

But that’s the crux of it isn’t it? At the moment fans don’t have a scooby doo what’s going on and they aren’t being made to feel a part of it. If anything there’s a bigger disconnect between owners and fans than for some time. Communication is a funny thing. Wael thought he could come out every few years and write a long letter outlining lots of things that most knew wouldn’t happen or do a Radio Bristol interview where he avoided the hard questions and thought it would please the fans. We accepted it for a time but soon realised the lack of progress in the big things (Ground). He hadn’t had to follow a hard act so he was able to gain a few early and easy successes off the back of DC. For clarity I’m not anti-Wael, he’s a very nice man but leader of a football club he isn’t. The current owners? I’m not convinced they have the answers or know how to run a lower league football club. This awful end of the season and growing calls for the manager to go will test them. I think they need to be strong and see that the players are not playing for the manager and perhaps ask why. And look beyond MT for reasons. But they may take the easy route and sack him, albeit it will cost them. Too reminiscent of Dave Penny/ Stuart Campbell and relegation in ‘11. Their communication isnt the best, little news about next steps in developing the Mem (if there are any). I fear that in todays climate no one likes to tell unpopular news, no one is prepared to say what sometimes need to be said about money and budgets. Consequently fans, esp us, have inflated ambitions about what may happen and when that doesn’t come to pass (this season) there’s a sense of being let down or even outrage. Wael could never present bad news, he would go undercover rather than do so. I fear the new owners may be similar but I don’t know. The other place has lots of rumours about them. I’ve no idea if these are true or not. Suffice to say the disconnect between the club and fans now makes the argument between the SC/ Eric Godfrey and the Club in the 60s look small, albeit being a disconnect that the club would probably deny. UTG!

No probably about it, they’d add in that the SC is not relevant and more, many would agree too, not understanding the SC has been independent for just in case we need to have a rescue plan. Ah well, nowt i can DO. Too many fall for the dream OVER the glaring reality, something i can never understand nor accept but i cannot deal with the abuse and gang mentality. I have my own end point of patience too. I had to take time off or i felt a rage building that only bad could have come from had i continued to try and give out truthful information

I have a mate who is a massive Man City fan, been going since 1967, he says that the football now is superb but he says that he can make more atmosphere watching in his kitchen than there is at the match, that tickets are hard or impossible to get and that everything is very expensive. He still goes when he can but he says that he hasnt really enjoyed match days since City left Maine road ! and that he feels that the club would rather have people coming from abroad, spending money in the shop, paying for a guided tour etc than a supporter like him (he understands why that is) and he feels disconnected too, well thats the price of success I suppose.

Very true. I’m sure you’re right over many, many clubs. Not just us. As most know since living down here I’ve been going regularly to AFCB together with Rovers over the last 30 years and you are right. AFCB are still having a good connection with their fans. They are living the dream, a rich American prepared to spend as opposed to a rich Russian who also spent. They are just enjoying the day to day of being an AFCB fan. I do know several fans who have been priced out of going and miss the “old days.” (Although tbh the “good old days” weren’t very good and nearly led to there being no AFCB) I think AFCB have done it well although again succeeding is at the whim of a rich overseas owner and many fans aren’t sure about what legacy the PL days will leave if they get relegated. And of course the American owner here, Bill Foley, sees it as business opportunity. Like most foreign owners and there’s nothing wrong with that. UTG!

It’s in your blood ( or it is mine ) , it would be very easy for me to go & watch forest ( live notts ) , I did once when I first moved up with a lad I worked with , forest mad , but I’ve never been less enthusiastic about something in my life , bored out of my brains after 30 mins , never been since other than when we’ve played them . Rovers are my team and always will be , the journey home can be a bit tiresome after a loss , but you do get used to it , I work with blades / Sunderland / Leeds etc etc , there all the same , same moans , can’t kid pop to city ground but all head up motorway to there team on a Saturday It’s frustrating but nothing decades of supporting rovers has got me used to .

Each to their own isn’t it ? I love live football. I will watch local non-league stuff but having been down here for nearly early 50 years I’ve taken an interest in most local things. Having two boys who loved football and were in danger of becoming armchair Man U fans I started taking them to their local league club, AFCB. At that time they were in Div 4 hunting for fans and their Season Tickets for families were incredibly cheap so we did it. I just couldn’t afford transport to Bristol regularly, neither did I have the time and the kids had to fit other stuff in. 30 minutes each way meant we only spent Saturday afternoons doing it, it didn’t dominate family life. And one has become a life-long cherry taking in away matches. We were no glory hunters but he’s now loving the football dream. Well done to them, though I only whisper it on here! And I still get about 10 games a season with us. UTG!

For me it was when the second stadium dream evaporated before our eyes not long after the UWE fiasco and a retro 50s stand complete with pillars appeared as out of nowhere to stamp home the fact we're just a grain of sand in the great big scheme of footballing things. Where there's a dream, there's hope. But they've killed that.

I got enthusiastic during some games under Joseph and Matt this season.
The "7 0 Season " was just bonkers with enthusiasm!

Good to hear from you, Bas, you old goat. What do you think's wrong at Rovers? What do you think's the solution? I'm totally behind Taylor. But I appreciate it's worse for those there.
