Liverpool Captain and legend Ron Yeats has died aged 86..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/07/12/89387359-13824095-Former_Liverpool_captain_Ron_Yeats_has_died_at_the_age_of_86_the-a-33_1725707079590.jpgLiverpool will lower flags to half mast across club sites on Saturday following the death of Anfield legend Ron Yeats at the age of 86. Yeats was part of the Liverpool side that won the Second Division title under Bill Shankly in 1962, before going on to win two top division titles, the FA Cup - the club's first in 1965 - and three Charity Shields. He made 454 appearances before leaving for Tranmere in 1971. More than 400 of those appearances were as captain, with only Steven Gerrard leading the team on more occasions. After signing Yeats from Dundee United in 1961, Shankly famously said to the media: "Walk around him. He's a colossus." Asked about his greatest achievements at Anfield, Yeats once said: "Being the captain that took the club out of the Second Division after eight years was a very, very proud moment. "To follow that by being the first captain of Liverpool to lift the FA Cup is something I am very proud of. "I do not go round with the medals on my chest- it is just there for me to say." Yeats returned to Liverpool as chief scout in 1986 and eventually retired in 2006. A Liverpool club statement said: "The thoughts of everyone at LFC are with Ron's wife, Ann, all of his family and his friends at this incredibly sad time." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/07/12/89387683-13824095-Yeats_top_led_Liverpool_to_their_first_FA_Cup_success_in_1965_ag-a-34_1725707079591.jpg Ron Yeats, top, led Liverpool to their first FA Cup success in 1965 against Leeds United at Wembley

James Earl Jones, voice of Darth Vader, dies aged 93..by Thomas Mackintosh, BBC Newsi2-prod.themirror.com/incoming/article684841.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_James-Earl-Jones-You-Cant-Take-It-With-You.jpgAmerican actor James Earl Jones, best known for being the voices of the Star Wars villain Darth Vader, has died aged 93. He died early on Monday morning surrounded by his family, agent Barry McPherson said. Jones starred in dozens of films including Field of Dreams, Coming To America, Conan the Barbarian and The Lion King. He was best known for giving the Star Wars supervillain Darth Vader his distinctive, gravelly voice. Mark Hamill, who played Vader's son Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, posted "RIP Dad" with a broken heart emoji as he shared a news report of the death. During his career, Jones won three Tony awards including two Emmys and a Grammy, as well as an honorary Oscar in 2011 for lifetime achievement. In 1971, he became only the second Black man nominated for an Academy Award for best actor, after Sidney Poitier. i2-prod.themirror.com/incoming/article466528.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_James-Earl-Jones.jpgBorn in Mississippi in January 1931, Jones said he was unable to speak for most of his childhood because of a stammer. He explained he had developed his famous voice while working on how to deal with the stammer. Jones was best known for voicing Darth Vader in the original Star Wars film, which came out in 1977, and sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He reprised the role in later film releases such as the first instalment of the Star Wars anthology series, Rogue One, and the third instalment of the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - both released in the later 2010s. A different actor always donned the Darth Vader costume and provided the movement for the famous villain, including the late David Prowse, with Jones lending his deep and instantly recognisable voice. "I love being part of that whole myth, of that whole cult," Jones said in a previous interview, adding he was glad to oblige fans who asked for a command recital of his "I am your father" line. Jones said he never made much money off the Darth Vader part - only $9,000 (£6,884) for the first film - and he considered it merely a special effects job. At his own insistence, he was not given a credit for his performance. He felt it was all merely another "special effect". When the films broke all box office records, he was persuaded to rethink. Jones was also well known as a television performer, playing the older Alex Hailey in Roots: The Next Generation and winning one of his two Emmys for the lead role in the US drama Gabriel's Fire. His gravelly tones were used in The Simpsons and he appeared in early episodes of Sesame Street. Jones also tackled many iconic Shakespeare characters on the stage, including Othello and King Lear.

US country music star Kris Kristofferson dies, aged 88..by Hafsa Khalil, BBC Newsi2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article33780985.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_Portrait-of-Kris-Kristofferson.jpgKris Kristofferson, the award-winning country singer and actor who worked with Johnny Cash and Martin Scorsese, has died aged 88. A representative said he passed away "peacefully" at his home in Hawaii on Saturday, surrounded by family. The statement described Kristofferson as "a peacenik, a revolutionary, an actor, a superstar, a sex symbol, and a family man." The multi-award winner was known for his songwriting, notably credited for Me and Bobby McGee, and Help Me Make It Through the Night, among others. He also acted in the hit movie A Star Is Born. A message from his family said they were all "so blessed" for the time they had with him. "Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all,” said the message, quoted by CBS News, the BBC's US partner. Born in Brownsville, Texas, on 22 June, 1936, Kristofferson became a leading figure in country music. “When I got started, I was one of the people hoping to bring respect to country music,” he said, according to the family message. “Some of the songs I had that got to be hits did that. I imagine that’s why somebody might vote me into a Hall of Fame. I know it’s not because of my golden throat.” He won three Grammys for best country song, Help Me Make It Through the Night in 1972, and two separate duets with Rita Coolidge (1974, 1976), to whom he was married in the 1970s. He also received multiple lifetime achievement honours, including from The Recording Academy, the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music. Kristofferson is survived by his wife Lisa, his eight children, and seven grandchildren. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/30/04/90256355-13905851-image-a-31_1727665971666.jpg
