David Soul: Starsky & Hutch actor dies aged 80..By Charlotte Gallagher, Culture correspondent.i2-prod.dailyrecord.co.uk/incoming/article31815706.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_01HKD0BG0D8RDXZAGMSS1F35H1.jpgActor David Soul, best known for his role in the television series Starsky & Hutch, has died at the age of 80. His wife, Helen Snell said he died on Thursday "after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family. "He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend," she said. "His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched." The US-born actor was best known for his role as Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson in the classic crime-solving series Starsky & Hutch. He starred opposite Paul Michael Glaser in the series, which ran from 1975 to 1979. He and Glaser reprised their roles in the 2004 remake Starsky & Hutch, starring Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. Soul was also known for his roles in Here Come The Brides, Magnum Force and The Yellow Rose. The actor and singer, who was married five times, was jailed in the 1980s for attacking his then wife, Patti Carnel Sherman. people.com/thmb/F0R4bYgpc-m5Rtwm7GkGaOCzTLY=/750x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():focal(434x139:436x141):format(webp)/starsky-and-hutch-022223-1-b9d5ae889bd3452d89d8dedc5ae5248d.jpgBefore he found fame as an actor, Soul started his professional career as a folk singer, warming up audiences for stars like Frank Zappa, the Byrds, and the Lovin' Spoonful. He picked up an interest in music as a teenager in Mexico, where his father was a professor at a college for young diplomats. There, he was befriended by a group of radical students who gave him a guitar and taught him the indigenous songs of Mexico. Upon his return to the US, he found some success playing those songs around Minneapolis - but it was only when he donned a mask and hid his face that his career really took off. As "The Covered Man", he was signed by the William Morris Agency and appeared on the TV talk show circuit, including multiple appearances on the highly-rated Merv Griffin show. But when he decided to lose the mask and reveal himself, bookings dwindled and he turned to acting instead. Later, after the success of Starsky & Hutch, he returned to music, putting out four albums of soft rock ballads in the late 1970s. They produced two UK number one singles, Silver Lady and Don't Give Up On Us, snapped up by adoring fans of his TV persona. A New York Times review of his first post-fame concert in 1977 described "camera‐wielding teenage girls charging the stage" amidst "the flicker of hundreds of exploding flashcubes and a continual squealing". The fervour ended after his spell in jail and rehab, after which he only recorded one further album - 1997's self-released Leave a Light On.

Derek Draper a political crony of Blair,Mandelson etc has died after a long illness caused by covid, involved in TWO political scandals... been praised by Blair today though. i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article31814368.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_Im-a-Celebrity-Get-Me-Out-of-Here-TV-Show-Kate-Garraway-at-the-Versace-Hotel-Series-19-Aus.jpgKate Garraway today revealed that her husband Derek Draper has died aged 56 and told how she held his hand 'throughout the last long hours and when he passed'. The Good Morning Britain star, 56, announced the death of her husband of 18 years on Instagram this morning and said: 'Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.' Derek suffered a heart attack before Christmas following a long battle with Covid. Mr Draper was a former researcher for Blairite Peter Mandelson who became a New Labour spin doctor and later retrained as a psychotherapist after a series of political and lobbying scandals. Former prime minister Gordon Brown led tributes today. Mr Brown tweeted: 'So sad that after such a brave struggle Derek Draper has lost his life as a result of Covid. I will remember him as brilliant, creative and multitalented, and our thoughts are with Kate, Darcey and Billy. RIP Derek'. Sir Tony Blair said: 'I am so sad to hear the news about Derek. My heart goes out to Kate and their children William and Darcey. 'It is extraordinary and remarkable that Derek survived so long after the ravages of Covid. And that was in large measure due to the love Derek had for his family and they for him. This also says something very special about Derek. 'He was a tough sometimes ruthless political operative, a brilliant adviser and someone you always wanted on your side. 'But underneath that tough exterior he was a loving, kind, generous and good natured man you wanted as a friend. 'He was an important part of the New Labour story, at the centre of things right at the beginning. But most important of all, he was a good colleague and great friend. And we will miss him deeply.'

Sir Roy Calne: Pioneering Cambridge surgeon dies aged 93..By Lewis Adams, BBC News, Cambridgeshire.ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p01h7zcc.jpgPioneering British surgeon Prof Sir Roy Calne, who undertook the UK's first successful liver transplant operation, has died at the age of 93. Sir Roy led the operation at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge in 1968, a year after the US's first successful liver transplant. The world-leading surgeon, who died of heart failure overnight on Saturday, received a Pride of Britain award for his life's work. His son Russell said he was "an incredible person to have as a father". "He was an amazing character, a slight eccentric and a wonderful father to six children," Mr Calne said. "We were all very, very proud of him for everything he has achieved and done, and we've been to some amazing places due to his accolades." Born in Richmond, Surrey, Sir Roy was educated at Lancing College before having his medical training at Guys Hospital in London. He was the first to use drugs to help stop the rejection of donated organs and this led to a major expansion of organ grafting worldwide. Sir Roy's work saw him elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974 and knighted in 1986. The following year, he undertook the world's first liver, heart and lung transplant with the Royal Papworth Hospital's John Wallwork. He collected numerous accolades including the Pride of Britain award for lifetime achievement in 2014.
