Sodomites? Interesting language. Homosexuals. Just for you Baldrick. The term 'sodomites' has used as an insult towards homosexuals for centuries, so I understand why baldrick questioned your usage. What are your thoughts on the LGBTQ+ community Bas, out of interest

I get some of it, but do not understand it totally. A couple of weeks ago I was interviewing in Cardiff and my co interviewer said to me "I think this candidate is trans" I suddenly realised I was not sure which pronoun to use when introduced. My co interviewer (who I have always presumed to be gay) told me to use "they". How the eff do you use "they" when addressing one person? So I stumbled and just said very nice to meet you. It's all a bit ridiculous, but I don't care enough to get wound up about it whilst recognising that I have been a character from "Life on Mars"

As I understand it, not much but some actively want to use it as some form of reclaiming the term queer, whilst others don't. The whole LGBTQ+ is an umbrella term covering many.

I so wish they hadn't done that. He said he wanted to be called "IT" They said you can't do that and try again He suggested "THING" That was rejected and he was warned. So it went on. They never asked me again.

Anyone enjoyed the Lake District? "Permit breaches should be reported to the Environment Agency, but United Utilities failed to do this for most of the discharges identified by the BBC between the start of 2021 and the end of 2023. In those three years, we found that United Utilities illegally pumped sewage into Windermere for 165 hours, of which at least 118 hours was not reported to the environmental regulator. We were able to calculate the volume of the sewage released because it was dumped into the lake using either one or two dedicated pumps, each of which operates at 240 litres per second. This means that between 143 million and 286 million litres was illegally dumped in the lake, depending how often both pumps were operating. United Utilities failed to report at least 102 million litres of that pollution." www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdrj70dynk1o

After any heavy rain you don't go swimming in the sea because of the sewage discharges. The real issue here is that the water companies are not breaking the law. The laws in place have been put there by successive governments over the years. It's up to the politicians (lawmakers) to change the laws, and the punishments. First off, they can make a law where all sewage on the coast has to go through a pipeline that discharges ten miles out at sea. Next, they have to make any punishments for breaking the law very harsh. Monatary fines are good, but the water companies would rather pay the fines than pay for the solution. Penalties and punishment needs to be directed at the very people at the top of these organizations, and that goes for any company that pollutes the environment, not just water companies.

At least 72 killed in Spanish flash floods as king warns of areas cut off by damage..by Sam Hancockichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/2c8e/live/f8c5dcf0-96d2-11ef-ba4d-5b04a90bcb33.jpgFlash flooding has killed at least 72 people in the south-east of Spain, where rescue teams are working to find those feared missing The country's King Felipe VI warns there has been "enormous destruction" to infrastructure and, as a result, some communities are harder to access Earlier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised residents in affected areas "we won't abandon you" - and announced there would be a three-day mourning period Footage uploaded to social media overnight showed floodwaters causing chaos in some areas, dragging cars through streets and leaving some people clinging to trees Local authorities are issuing warnings about false information circulating online, including whether Valencia's tap water is safe to drink

Rescue operations continue in Spain after flash floods kill at least 95..by Sam Hancock, with Bethany Bell and Nicky Schiller reporting from Valenciaichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/fb79/live/a9c71c10-96da-11ef-ba4d-5b04a90bcb33.jpgEmergency teams in southern Spain are continuing to look for those feared missing after flash flooding killed at least 95 people in the region Hundreds of soldiers have been deployed to Valencia, one of the worst-hit areas, to help with the rescue effort; some places can only be reached by helicopter It comes after Spain's King Felipe VI warned yesterday that there had been "enormous destruction" to infrastructure and, as a result, some communities were harder to access Footage uploaded to social media showed floodwaters causing chaos in some areas, dragging cars through streets and leaving some people clinging to trees Local authorities have issued warnings about false information circulating online, including whether Valencia's tap water is safe to drink British man, 71, dies after being rescued from Spain floods..by Alex Smith & Ian Aikman, BBC NewsA British man has died hours after being rescued from his home on the outskirts of Málaga, Spain, after intense flooding hit parts of the country, local officials say. The 71-year-old - who has not been named - had been taken to hospital after the rescue, and was "suffering from hypothermia", according to the president of the Andalusian government, in southern Spain. He died after suffering "several cardiac arrests", Juanma Moreno said. At least 95 people have died after heavy rain and hailstorms triggered flash floods on Tuesday. Most of these deaths - 92 - have come in the eastern city of Valencia. Two more died in the central Castilla-La-Mancha region. There are fears the death toll could rise in the coming days as many people remain missing across affected areas. Local officials in the town of Chiva, near Valencia, said it was "impossible" to put a final figure on the number of people who have perished. More than a year's worth of rain fell there in just eight hours on Tuesday. Footage posted on social media from the region shows neighbourhoods destroyed and cars piled up in the street. Meteorologists believe the extreme weather is due, in part, to the Dana phenomenon - when a pool of cold air interacts with an area of low pressure to create an intensely unstable atmospheric environment. While studies suggest Dana events occur many times each year in the western Mediterranean, the intensity of such rainfall events appears to be increasing due to climate change.

‘No-one is helping us’: Anger in flood-hit Valencia as Spain's PM deploys more troops..by Emily Atkinson and Matt Spiveyichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/395b/live/84c79ea0-9921-11ef-9260-19e6a950e830.jpgLocal authorities are facing criticism over the response to the catastrophic floods in Spain - one Valencia resident tells the BBC "no-one is helping us" Heavy rains that began on Monday caused floods that destroyed bridges and covered towns with mud, cutting off communities and leaving them without basic services More than 200 people are confirmed dead, with the toll expected to rise further as recovery efforts continue Earlier, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced the country's biggest deployment of troops and emergency services in peacetime to support recovery efforts Weather warnings are in force in north-eastern and southern Spain, with another issued in the Balearic Islands

2024 will have a lot of elections and with 2 major conflicts going on we have to hope for the best. EU elections, will parties on the right be able to get more Euro MPs and change the direction of the EU ? Can Trump win in the US elections ? he has promised to stop the war in Ukraine, lets hope that that war hasnt spread to neighbouring countries before he can end it. Gaza, this has the possibility to cause lots of problems in the Middle East (and in Europe if there are terror attacks) again if Trump wins will he pull out of bases in Iraq and Syria ? will the Iranians cause problems ? will Israel invade Lebanon again ? Going to be interesting. Well we know the answers to a lot of my questions now and it has been interesting. Could get even more interesting in Europe now that the governing coalition in Germany is falling apart, could cause problems for the EU ?

Girl, 17, dies on M5 after leaving police vehicle..by Sammy Jenkins, BBC News, West of England

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the teenager was being transported to custody by Avon and Somerset Police before the incident. The collision happened between junctions 24 for Bridgwater and 25 for Taunton, Somerset, at about 23:00 GMT on Monday. An IOPC spokesperson said an investigation had been launched, adding: "Our sympathies are with the girl’s loved ones and everyone affected by her death." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/11/12/07/91966805-14071385-image-a-39_1731396864785.jpgThe spokesperson added: "We were advised by Avon and Somerset Police that the girl was being transported to custody in a police vehicle and had got out of the vehicle shortly before the collision. "We sent our investigators to the police post incident procedure to begin gathering evidence." The girl died at the scene. No-one else was injured in the incident. Avon and Somerset Police said it had made a mandatory referral to the IOPC due to the recent prior police contact. The M5 was closed in both directions following the crash while inquiries were carried out and repairs were made to make the motorway safe. National Highways confirmed at 10.20 GMT on Tuesday the northbound carriageway had reopened between junctions 24 and 25, and the southbound carriageway reopened shortly afterwards. The site of the collision is near Creech Heathfield, close to Taunton. There are long delays on local roads, especially the A38 near North Petherton and Bridgwater. Motorists travelling southbound on the M5 are experiencing delays of 90 minutes, with seven miles of congestion. There are delays of 30 minutes and congestion for two miles northbound. Anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage which could help the investigation is urged to contact police.

I went to Devon today from Wiltshire to stay with a friend and had a lengthy detour via the A303. Inconvenient but in the light of a tragic incident like this then you just accept it. And we had a lovely walk along the cliffs near Westward Ho! However, having read the story about the victim, I'm feeling a little less sympathetic.
