Parking Joey, the Trump like celebrity aside, I still think you are all being harsh in assessment about Barton the manager.
”now same place where he came in” underestimates we can now be in a completely different place thanks to Barton the Manager. When he came in the club was in grip of a Master Plan. No one could have kept us up, and the same master plan could have taken us out the league.
Lucky with the Elliott signing and only went up because Scunny didn’t compete for Northampton as they should have done. Truth is Barton completely rebuilt the squad and mentality and got us flying, which is why we bounced back.
This season there’s been enough good and more than capable performances to suggest we are not in trouble, we have under performed in points won haven’t we? It’s yet another rebuild, that could come together later like the L2 season. Not nearly the same situation he inherited.
If he was a very bad manager there is no way we would have bounced straight back up on such a great run. He swapped out the entir Squad, built a team with backbone, fight, leadership, strong mentality. He killed a Master Plan which didn’t understand this approach and could have taken us to further ruin.

If you still think Barton was a bad manager, and we are in a worse place now than when he came in, I have a free Josh Barrel for every poster 😀

I think the new owners will want someone with a more professional, refined approach. The issues associated with Barton overtook some jog his positive traits - confidence, recruitment, certain benchmarking. Our new manager will be based on what the club will offer - if we have a budget and a believable plan then I think we’ll be happy with the new appointment. Somebody who fuels the entire fanbase and not just the malcontent section.

It is also a squad that is more likely to escape this league through the trap door rather than through the attic Edit - and yes Josh Barrel was horrendous but then so was the whole of Benny’s time here

I am not a fan of Barton as a man, but as a football manager (only) he has my respect. He turned the club around on the football pitch, and we were starting to build a decent football team in League One (again). He is a decent manager who will have no trouble finding another club. I find this a strange time to let him go. He has a long contract and whilst we have not set League One on fire (yet), we are not even halfway through the season. Given that we always start slowly I still had expectations for this season. As many have said, a devisive character who regularly embarasses the club, so hopefully we can move forward as a unified fanbase again. Absolutely critical we get the right person in, there is still potentially a promotion to be had this season (or next). UTG I liked some of the football he played and that second half of the season in ‘22 was very good. He found a system, used a very talented Elliot A and stuck to it but the previous season kept trying different systems with little success and last season was ok to consolidate but we’ve flattered to deceive this season and whilst I think we could have come good his overall record was below average imo. But that end of season 21-22 will linger long and it was a great time to be a gashead. He struggled for any consistency in League 1. His non-football stuff wasn’t the best and his inability to concentrate on the football and to call players and managers out publicly (even before matches so doing their team talk for them) was embarrassing and unnecessary and showed a complete lack of discipline though of course others loved him for his honesty at those times. It’s a shame his honesty didn’t always stretch to the post match interviews when wheat he said bore no resemblance to what had happened. But, a memorable time for good and bad reasons. The only thing I would disagree with you Richmace is the assumption he will have no trouble getting an another job. Football has moved on and the calling out, bad publicity that he attracts might not worry some fans but it will owners and BODs. Brand awareness is vital now. Whenever clubs appoint managers they talk about the values of the club and in-coming manager being very close. Now I think that’s usually a load of cobblers but clubs say it all the time. I’d love to hear a club say that in relation to JB. It won’t happen so finding another job will not be quite so easy, certainly not one as attractive as BRFC. (Attractive insofar as potential, owners who are prepared to spend, owners who tolerated the baggage he came with as well as that he accumulated whilst here, passionate fanbase who travel and large city around it and atm nearly a decent squad) Seriously, thanks JB but all managers have a time span and his was naturally up. UTG!

After finishing his playing career, Steve Cotterill became a manager. His managerial career began when he was hired as manager of Sligo Rovers in Ireland. Since then, he has been the manager of Cheltenham Town, Stoke City, Burnley, Notts County, Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Birmingham City and Shrewsbury Town.
Been round the block age 59 seen it done it and got the t shirt.
Interview him.

I know this Forum generally seems to have strong negative opinions about him, but there has been just 1 (one) person who seems to think it was the wrong decision to fire him. And I said elsewhere - we don't actually know the reason for his sacking. Given the history of him shooting his mouth off - we're bound to hear his version of events soon.

I know plenty about football thanks - do you? I’ve said many times that we have some good players in this squad but it is unbalanced and now contains too many journeymen who will not be here beyond this season. Whoever inherits this will face a significant rebuild at the end of the season. A better manager will get more of a tune out of them than Barton could but I’ll be very surprised if this squad has enough to get anywhere near ghe playoffs

Agree with a lot of this Wareham, well reasoned, thoughtful post, as always. I had no time for the constant call out of others, be it other managers, coaches, our own players. There is a thin dividing line between being “honest”, and being tactless, or, needlessly unpleasant, which JB crossed too many times. Even Steve Evans had been very complimentary about both Barton, and the club, before Tuesday’s match, then became the latest opposition manager to be coated. I am struggling to think of any other manager who has been as abusive publicly,as JB has been. Having said that, he has certainly been able to attract some decent players, but we will never know how many would not want to work with him. I thought he gave up in the relegation season, and was scathing in his assessment of the players at his disposal, which was hardly likely to be a motivational tool. However, I can’t think of any of those players having succeeded anywhere, since he got rid of them. I did like the way he correctly identified Rovers as a massively underachieving club, and outlined what he intended to do, to put this right. The Quarters, the upgraded, but probably expensive, backroom staff, were positive, the incredible end to 21/22 will never be forgotten. Aiming for a promotion push this season was ambitious, but also put pressure on JB to deliver. Things haven’t gone smoothly this season, marred by too many injuries, and no settled side, but I greatly enjoyed some of the football played, I have seen all,of the home games, and matches at Portsmouth, Charlton and Shrewsbury. There were times when I really thought we were on the cusp of getting somewhere, especially after Charlton away, and Wigan at home. We were impressive at Portsmouth, and recently at Oxford, but setbacks were always just around the corner. The West Ham Under 21 defeat was another huge embarrassment, Pizza Trophy, or not. We always find a way to let a goal in, and seldom keep a clean sheet, the home record in 2023/ has been a disgrace. Barton cannot complain about the backing he has received, it must be costly, maybe the new owners were getting cold feet about the expense, especially with the lowly League position. Possibly, Barton was never going to their idea of a Rovers manager, and his time was going to be up. I think JB would still be manager if Wael was in control, but new owners often don’t want the man they are bequeathed. JB would have been well aware of this factor, and that he needed to provide an on the field impetus. I just hope we are not set for another spell of upheaval, but there will be a lot of players out of contract at the end of the season. I have no real confidence about the new owners getting the next appointment right, who knows who they are taking advice from, or how deep, their football knowledge is? The early supposed candidates don’t inspire me, but who knows if they are just journalist guesswork. Maybe Mangan deserves a shot at manager, but at the same time, he may well be off, as soon as JB finds another club. Can’t honestly see JB landing another club easily, any owner would be aware of further controversies and fall outs, only being a matter of time.

I don't understand why any of you think or thought we are or were looking at a playoff campaign. We lose more games than we win, so the campaign is to reverse that ratio to get away from danger, and to enjoy Rovers winning. I am perfectly happy to aim to have won more games than we've lost in the third division, and continuing to do that for long enough (hopefully years) will make us an attractive club to supporters and players, and so we'll one day get promoted.

I doubt the owners have your patience and looking at the opposition so far this season we should be giving it a go. Whether it's worth going up to get relegated if you can't finance it is another question.

I doubt the owners have your patience and looking at the opposition so far this season we should be giving it a go. Do you think? I think winning more than you lose over a forty-six game season would put you between mid table and playoffs, so giving it a go, somewhat? Do that long enough and gates will increase, and you 'might' go up every summer! Of course it is, for the fans, and for building the club. I've nothing against playing at Burton and Fleetwood, but I'd like to play at Leicester and Leeds, not to mention BC1982.

Absolutely critical we get the right person in, there is still potentially a promotion to be had this season (or next). UTG A balanced post and I respect your views. But (you knew there was going to be a but) - this is the third year which has seen a total 'rebuild'. Which consists of old players, injury prone players and loanees. Even if Barton manages a year of relative success based on luck & chemistry, a total rebuild would be required the next year. As yet, we don't know the real reason the Club have sacked him. I have a feeling Barton will sling mud and trash talk his way out of the door, tarnishing his reputation further. I sincerely doubt another EFL Club would gamble on him. Good point.
Every year there has been a large turnover of players, which I assumed JB was doing to "move us forward".
Season 2 - Promotion. Season 3 - Consoluation in the higher league. Season 4 - Languishing in lower mid table. Too early to tell though (the goal was promotion and we are not seeing promotion form yet). We are notorious slow starters.
Looking at the above, then the turnover of players would appear to not be working, although I stand by my feeling that it is too early to judge this season. We have a good squad of players.
I would have thought that for successive promotions, you need a solid core of players across a number of years and add depth / strengthen specific areas, rather than replace large parts. Each season we have a lot of new players to learn.
The only thing that niggles me with JB's football in Leagie One is that we were not decisive enough in the final third. I like the possession football, but at times we were keeping possession for posession's sake. There was no end product, and I think the opposition knew that.
To summarise, the JB system I feel is not far off delivering us Championship football, and is the style of football I would like us to be known for. We just need it to be effective.
