Caught a bit on the radio this morning about an Albanian thief who was deported but sneaked back into Britain (seems easy to do) and is now to be allowed to stay here, must be more to the story but I didnt hear all of it. Originally came to the UK illegally. Was jailed here for burglary and then deported to serve the rest of his sentence in Albania under the returns agreement. Was released (I believe) after serving 6 months of a 2 1/2 Yr sentence. Sneaked back into the UK illegally to be with his Lithuanian girlfriend who he apparently married and had a child. The ECHR deemed he was entitled to a family life in the UK and could not be deported.....Unbelievable. Was it a British judge deciding or did it go as far as Strasbourg?

The main articles on this in the Express and Telegraph are vague but it appears to be in the UK not Strasbourg. But it looks as if the judgement was made in March 2024 while James Cleverly was Home Secretary and he felt that it should not stand. I believe it was due to the separation of the family and the health of his new wife. The Telegraph states that it was '...judge’s ruling was upheld by an upper immigration tribunal...' That would be in the UK. I presume the UK Government can take it further to the European Court.

Headline grabbing free, details for a fee. Funny that.

Right to life: The state must protect people's lives by enforcing the law and protecting those in danger. Prohibition of torture: The ECHR prohibits torture and the death penalty. Prohibition of slavery: The ECHR prohibits slavery and forced labor. Right to liberty and security: The ECHR guarantees the right to liberty and security. Right to a fair trial: The ECHR guarantees the right to a fair trial. Freedom of expression: The ECHR guarantees freedom of expression. Freedom of assembly and association: The ECHR guarantees freedom of assembly and association. Prohibition of discrimination: The ECHR prohibits discrimination. Right to respect for private and family life: The ECHR guarantees the right to respect for your private and family life, your home and correspondence.

There will be plenty of rights kept from the ECHR. We just twaddle a few things in favour of Britons rights and safety.
