No problem, if the Nuffield Trust isn't a suitable source (๐), the IFS has done some research too. "Looking at trends in the English NHS, nurses saw a significant reduction in real pay over the 2010s (falling 7% between 2010 and 2019) and only a modest recovery since, with average nurse pay growing by a little less than 1% over the same 2019โ23 period. Doctors also saw pay cuts between 2010 and 2019 (of around 10%) but, unlike teachers and nurses, have also seen their pay fall further in the period since 2019, making them the hardest-hit group of the three." ifs.org.uk/publications/recent-trends-public-sector-payWait for it "But the IFS is full of Remainers" Well they do analyse the numbers rather well. Anyone see the study out of Aston University on the impact of Brexit on the trade in goods? I did, but I'm sure they are biased and just trying to raise money with a flawed report. ๐

It was a word he would never use, he claimed. Jason Beer KC then produced e-mails showing that he in fact did use this term!

Love the amount of instances where Jason Beer has produced the emails or some reference to disprove the point the person " in the hot seat" has denied saying, certainly has done his homework on these people..

Post Office boss Nick Read gives third day of evidence at inquiry..by Peter Ruddick, Business reporteri.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/10/22/90717499-0-image-a-16_1728594520462.jpgHas the Post Office sufficiently changed in the past five years? There were lots of topics covered again today. Many questions. Countless documents. But one key theme. We began with the new sub-postmaster contract. It still includes reference to investigations and interviews under caution. Is that really appropriate? Nick Read admitted it was not but assured the inquiry his investigators had changed, even if the contract hadn't been updated properly. Is it right that some people working for the Post Office at the height of the scandal are still there? Read said they had "struggled" to "move people on", despite apparent government encouragement. Finally, redress and compensation. Was the Post Office dragging its heels because of "historic, dyed in the wool prejudice"? Again, Read said no. When faced with emotional examples, he said he regretted how long it was all taking. But, a document from the setting up of the very first scheme did appear to suggest hurdles were put in place. Still no discussion of Read's own pay. Tomorrow might not be any easier for the outgoing boss. Another report from Emma Simpson, Business correspondentBefore winding up his questions, Jason Beer KC got onto the topic of outgoing Post Office chief executive Nick Readโs pay. Weโve heard a lot from a series of witnesses about his desire for more money. โDid your repeated grievances and complaints about remuneration become too significant a feature with your tenure and interfere with your ability to carry out your role?โ he was asked. No, he replied. He admitted to being very frustrated at times but denied ever threatening to resign. Sam Stein KC, acting for sub-postmasters, wanted to know where all the money taken from sub-postmasters ended up. Read said they had external forensic accountants trying to find out: ยฃ36m had so far been identified between 1999-2015, after assessing claims from the two main Post Office schemes. "Itโs our best endeavour in terms of where weโve got to," he said. Stein said the figure was now growing because it was clear many sub-postmasters were still paying for current shortfalls out of their own money. Read repeatedly stressed that the Post Office wasnโt forcing people into making good any losses they didnโt agree with, but acknowledged that message wasnโt getting through. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/10/22/90717487-0-image-a-14_1728594513805.jpg

London Tube drivers to strike over pay..by James W Kelly, BBC Newslogos-world.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/London-Underground-Logo-1933-1949-500x281.pngLondon Underground train drivers are set to strike next month in a dispute over pay, the Aslef union has announced. As well as Tube drivers, instructors, management grade staff and those in the engineering section are to take action. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) has also announced industrial action by its members next month. Aslef said train operators and management grade staff would strike on 7th and 12th November, and those in the engineering section for 24 hours from 6pm on 1st November. Transport for London (TfL) said the action by Aslef and the RMT was "disappointing" but it remained engaged with the unions. Finn Brennan, Aslefโs full-time organiser on London Underground, said: "We donโt want to go on strike โ we donโt want to make travelling in and around the capital more difficult for passengers and we donโt want to lose a dayโs pay โ but we have been forced into this position because [London Underground] management wonโt sit down properly and negotiate with us." The union said its Tube train driver members "overwhelmingly" backed taking industrial action, with 98.8% voting in favour on a turnout of 68%. Aslef is seeking a pay agreement with London Underground, which has offered a 3.8% pay rise and a variable lump sum. Mr Brennan said the offer would leave members on a lower salary than drivers on other TfL services, such as the Elizabeth line and Overground. Different groups of staff will also not be working any overtime at various times in November.

Alan Bates gives evidence to MPs over compensation for Post Office scandal victims..by Jeremy Culleyichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/1024/cpsprodpb/83c0/live/51d7f300-9ac0-11ef-9260-19e6a950e830.jpgSir Alan Bates is giving evidence to a parliamentary committee that is considering fast and fair redress for victims of the Post Office Horizon scandal Bates leads the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance, campaigning on behalf of hundreds of sub-postmasters wrongly convicted after faulty software showed money missing from their branch accounts It comes after it was announced in last week's Budget that ยฃ1.8bn has been set aside for victims of the scandal Bates has previously hit out at the length of time it is taking for the government to pay financial redress Sir Alan Bates poured his life savings into a Post Office branch in Llandudno, north Wales, but was sacked in 2003 after faulty Horizon software showed up discrepancies in his accounts. This helped spur him to start up the Justice For Subpostmasters Alliance in 2009, a group that took on the Post Office in the courts and eventually won. Public interest in the long-running scandal was reignited in January this year after an ITV dramatisation of the scandal, which focused on the fight of Bates and other sub-postmasters who took part in the landmark group legal action. It has been an eventful year for Bates. In August he married his long-term partner Suzanne Sercombe on Sir Richard Branson's private island in the Caribbean, with the Virgin tycoon officiating at the ceremony. In September, he was knighted for services to justice after being named in the King's Birthday Honours in June.
