Ex-Liverpool star John Barnes owes £238k in tax, court hears.. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/06/17/75131739-12488051-image-m-37_1694017627958.jpgA bankruptcy petition against former Liverpool and England footballer John Barnes has been lodged by tax officials. A judge considered Barnes' case at a hearing in a specialist court in London which the star did not attend. Judge Catherine Burton was told by an official from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) that Barnes owed £238,000. The judge made no orders and said the case would be reconsidered on 29 November. Barrister Nathan Webb, who represented Barnes, told the judge his client "just" needed time to pay and asked for an adjournment. He said Barnes was employed by Liverpool FC "on a salary of £200,000". "Mr Barnes is very well and able to pay," Mr Webb told Judge Burton. "He just requires a bit of time." A previous judge had dismissed another bankruptcy petition lodged by tax officials against Barnes in June. HMRC officials had indicated during that earlier litigation that Barnes had owed at least £200,000. They had told a judge that money owed had been paid. Barnes, 59, also played for Watford and Newcastle. He won 79 England caps between 1983 and 1995 and was head coach at Celtic after ending his playing career. Judge Burton oversaw the hearing in the Insolvency & Companies Court.

Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad are ready to lodge a £200m bid for Liverpool's Egypt star Mohamed Salah, 31, but fear time is running out before Thursday's transfer deadline. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/1455A/production/_131009238_mosalah.jpgShould Liverpool accept £200m if that bid is launched before close of play ? It would be Liverpool’s biggest ever sale, eclipsing that of Philippe Coutinho in January 2018 for £146m. Off the back of that, the Reds funded deals for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, going on to lift the Premier League and Champions League titles. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/7/19980ea4-e94f-43ef-9f0f-116eef6d3bed.jpgSalah's agent has previously dismissed talk of a move to Saudi Arabia but has not responded following the latest links with Al-Ittihad. "Mohamed remains committed to Liverpool," agent Ramy Abbas Issa wrote in a social media post on 7th August. "If we considered leaving Liverpool this year, we wouldn't have renewed the contract last summer." Salah has started all four of Liverpool's games this season, with Klopp's side having accumulated 10 points following a draw with Chelsea and wins against Bournemouth, Newcastle United and Aston Villa. He set up Luis Diaz to score at Chelsea but showed frustration at being substituted in the draw before knocking in the rebound from his saved penalty in the win against Bournemouth. Salah had the assist for Darwin Nunez's winner at Newcastle, with Liverpool getting the three points despite being down to 10 men for most of the match. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/7/a8c8b833-b532-4df0-b287-60c4c27ca648.jpgA key player for the Merseysiders, Salah has 187 goals in 308 games for Liverpool and registered 76 assists. He has won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, Fifa Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup during his time at Anfield. He has also won or shared the Premier League Golden Boot three times and been named the PFA player of the year twice. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/7/33ff6269-84e8-4f8c-93dc-014d8c4752f4.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15612/production/_131007578_gossip.pngGossip: Salah will not leave Liverpool this year, despite being offered a contract worth between $500m and $600m [£400m-£480m] over three years. 'If Salah stays I really believe Liverpool can make a challenge' - That’s the view of former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton. BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club have been discussing Mohamed Salah's Liverpool future amid continued interest from Saudi Arabia for the forward. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/7/7871e577-281b-448a-97c2-d5607d776e99.jpg

Salah staying boosts Liverpool..ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/8/cf29f4b8-c265-413f-99a6-b9f0c2b961f2.jpgLiverpool fans had been waiting nervously for the Saudi deadline to close. There was the fear Al-Ittihad could come back with a bid the Reds could not refuse for Salah - when they would not have been able to buy a replacement for four months. Salah has scored 188 goals in 309 games for Liverpool since joining from Roma in 2017. "The key for Liverpool is Salah," said former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live. "With him, I really believe they can make a challenge to Manchester City. If he went, they wouldn't challenge - he is that important to Liverpool." Reds legend Jamie Carragher added on TalkSPORT: "It feels like a brilliant start [to the season] for Liverpool, everyone has got their energy and buzz back. "It feels like the start of a new team, Klopp 2, Liverpool fans are calling it." While Al-Ittihad may yet make a renewed offer in January or next summer, Salah's Liverpool contract runs for almost two more years, until the end of 2024-25. "Before you know it, his contract will be up and he will be able to go on a free," continued Carragher. "The feeling among most Liverpool fans is we have him for one more season. "For all parties it feels like next summer Liverpool would still get a substantial fee and would still have him this season and a good chance of success. Liverpool would then have 12 months to consider how they replace him. "It would be very difficult to get another Mo Salah right away, but great players come and great players go."

Bournemouth rejected a late £20m bid from Tottenham for English defender Lloyd Kelly before the window closed, and Spurs could be joined by Liverpool and Newcastle United in wanting to sign the 24-year-old in January. Liverpool reportedly made a £100m bid for Newcastle and Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, 25, just before the transfer window closed on 1st September.

The defender was sent off in the 28th minute for fouling Alexander Isak. Van Dijk appeared to remonstrate with referee John Brooks prior to walking off the pitch. He was suspended against Aston Villa on 3rd September and will now be unavailable to face Wolves on 16th September. "The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent regulatory commission," said an FA statement.

Mohamed Salah: Saudi Pro League chief Michael Emenalo says door not closed on Liverpool forward move..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17631/production/_131039759_gettyimages-1657082705.jpg Salah joined Liverpool from Italian side Roma in 2017The door to Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah joining the Saudi Pro League is not closed, says the SPL director of football Michael Emenalo. Al-Ittihad had a £150m offer for the 31-year-old rejected last week, with the Reds insisting he was not for sale. A move for Salah did not materialise before the SPL transfer window closed on 7 September. "First and foremost, Mohamed Salah is one of the best players on the planet," Emenalo told Sky Sports. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/12811/production/_131039757_gettyimages-1652988714.jpgEmenalo added: "I've said before, privately and publicly that we welcome anybody that wants to come [to the SPL] and that includes Salah."But we have to do things in a very professional and respectful manner. That's what we're there for, it's what the SPL has been refined to do - bring professionalism, respect of efficiencies, and to do things in a competent way." The Al-Ittihad offer came just before the English transfer window closed on 1 September and gave Liverpool little time to bring in a replacement. Nevertheless, the Reds, and manager Jurgen Klopp, maintained Salah would be staying at the club. "You can't imagine how much fuss the world has made but how calm we are with it," said Klopp after his side beat Aston Villa on 3 September. "He is our player and wants to play here." Salah scored against Villa to take his tally for Liverpool to 188 goals in 309 games. "If it didn't happen, it's not because we no longer fancy the player, or because we have a problem with Liverpool," added Emenalo. "It's because certain things that need to align for all the parties involved in the process didn't align. "Nobody is angry, we move on, but we absolutely close no doors and if the opportunity is there to do things and do it well - and it brings Mohamed Salah to the Saudi Pro League we will all be very grateful."

Tottenham are on the verge of signing Hajduk Split's Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic, who had been linked with Liverpool, Chelsea, PSG and Manchester City, but the 16-year-old will not join Spurs until the summer of 2025. Inter Milan rejected approaches from Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle United for Italy midfielder Nicolo Barella this summer, but the 26-year-old could be available for around £77m next year.

'There are so many things we still need to improve' - LASK v Liverpool
ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/21/d5976737-2615-4609-93a8-4540767beedf.jpg Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk says the Reds must "stay calm and level-headed" as they begin their Europa League campaign as favourites to win the competition.
The centre-back, who is available for Thursday's group opener at LASK after missing the past two Premier League matches through suspension, acknowledged that the team have made a fine start to the campaign, but insisted expectations need to be managed."It's a reflection of the world we live in at the moment. It's from one extreme to the other," said the Dutchman. "There are so many games to play and twists and turns to happen. "We know we had a good start but there are so many things still we need to improve. We need to stay calm. "Everyone else from the outside world will say things, but we should not worry and think about it." He is clearly highly rated at Anfield, with Virgil Van Dijk comparing him to a "tasmanian devil". "I remember when he came on against Aston Villa away last year, and he did that stepover and went past the full back," said Van Dijk after a pre-season friendly in Preston. "He’s very exciting, very direct, one-on-one. I call him a Tasmanian Devil with the way he is buzzing around, he’s just so quick. If his decision making gets better - and he has all the time in the world for that - then he could definitely be one for the future." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/21/61ac1c67-6c18-4454-a897-919cc091b9e7.jpgLASK's Raiffeisen Arena

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cd0d/live/a39382f0-58c1-11ee-83bb-5f9bffc8f569.jpgWe asked for your reaction to Liverpool's 3-1 win over LASK in their Europa League opener.
Here are some of your comments:Garry: When you put 11 players on the park that have never played together, the first half is what you expect. However Jurgen turns it around, again. James: Good that many on the fringes had game time - and on this evidence, they needed it. Still too much of a gap between first and second choice players. More game time will hopefully narrow it. Concentration levels remain poor in the first 25 minutes. Stevo: I wasn't concerned about conceding a wonder goal from LASK as the big guns were always there to come on and blow away a gutsy but tired opponent. So impressed with Jurgen's continuing trust in the younger players. Experience at this level is vital. Klopp is quietly overseeing an influx of exciting talent all over the pitch, which is being tempered by strong competition. Jason: Considering most of the players who started should have pushed this team aside, there was no spark or invention. It took a wealth of talent to change the outcome because it was not good enough. It was an opportunity for fringe players to impress but sadly they were lacking. Bob: Liverpool have not been at their sparkling best but are showing a resilience that was missing until the very end of last season. Still short of a defender/defensive midfielder but new signings are definitely settling in. Expect a Champions League place this year. .................................................................................................................................................................... LASK 1-3 Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp spoke after Liverpool's 3-1 win over LASK in their Europa League opener:
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/3b41/live/39d5ba10-58bf-11ee-9e32-8f2aaa24b2bf.jpg"I’m pretty sure the boys would have thought there was nothing good from the first half, but that’s not true; we had good moments and that’s what we showed and besides that we could start getting back into the game again and we had a good chance to turn it around. And that’s what we did. And I’m really happy because I knew it would be difficult, it was difficult. We won it, well deserved, that’s it." On his 50th European win as Liverpool boss: "Let me say it like this, if I have still 50 after the group stage then I’m still the most successful Liverpool manager [in this regard] and everybody will hate the fact! [It’s] nice. "We played quite a lot of games in Europe. It’s good that we won that many, we have qualified for four finals. It’s great but probably it’s because in European competition there are just much more games than in the past. I’m pretty sure that’s the reason." On promising performances from Liverpool's youngsters: "If we would have used Ben Doak a little more often, given him the ball I think he would have got the ball more times on the touchline and passed the ball inside or whatever. Stefan [Bajcetic] found a way into the game after a difficult start, but we caused the problems obviously with the timing of our passes. Ryan [Gravenberch] played a super game in really difficult circumstances and was really decisive for us. Ibou [Konate] could get 80 minutes I think, Stefan could get minutes. So there were so many positives and I am really happy about that."

Sunday 24th September 2023 - Liverpool 3 (Salah 16 pen, Nunez 60, Jota 85) West Ham United 1 (Bowen 42) - Full-time score
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0AFE/production/_131241820_gettyimages-1698774383.jpg Darwin Nunez's goal was his fourth of the season for LiverpoolDarwin Nunez scored a fine goal as Liverpool saw off West Ham to extend their unbeaten run to 18 games in all competitions. Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead against the run of play with a penalty after he was brought down by Nayef Aguerd. Jarrod Bowen levelled for West Ham with an excellent stooping header to meet Vladimir Coufal's cross. Soon after Curtis Jones had a goal ruled out for Liverpool for offside. Nunez put them ahead with a difficult hooked volley from Alexis Mac Allister's clipped ball over the top. The Hammers played well in stages but never created a clear-cut chance to equalise. And Diogo Jota sealed the points when he pounced from close range to turn home Virgil van Dijk's header. West Ham boss David Moyes has now lost 24 Premier League games against Liverpool, a joint record for a manager against one team, level with Harry Redknapp against Manchester United. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/A73E/production/_131241824_gettyimages-1698773655.jpg

Liverpool: FSG agree to sell minority stake in club worth £82-164m to Dynasty Equity..By Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15404/production/_127544078_klopp.jpg Liverpool principal owner John Henry (second left) with manager Jurgen KloppLiverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have agreed to sell a minority stake in the club worth between £82m and £164m to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity. The deal ends the search for new investment by FSG, who wanted to retain majority ownership of the Reds. The new investment will primarily be used to pay off the club's bank debt. "Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever," said FSG president Mike Gordon. "We have always said that if there is an investment partner that is right for Liverpool then we would pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club's long-term financial resiliency and future growth." Liverpool lost £100m of revenue during the Covid-19 pandemic, also spent about £50m on a new training ground in Kirkby which opened in 2020, as well as £12m re-purchasing their previous Melwood training base for use by the women's team. The ongoing development of the Anfield Road Stand is going to cost an estimated £80m, and follows the completion of the new £114m Main Stand which opened in 2016. The Reds also spent about £145m on transfers in the summer, bringing in midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch. FSG are understood to be keen to reduce the bank debt the club has accrued through the financing of those recent infrastructure projects, and the new cash injection will help cover those costs rather than be directly used on future player transfers. "We look forward to building upon the long-standing relationship with Dynasty to further strengthen the club's financial position and sustain our ambitions for continued success on and off the pitch," added Gordon. FSG, who bought Liverpool for£300m deal in 2010, said in November 2022 they "would consider new shareholders" and the new investment brings that process to an end. Dynasty's chief executive officer, K. Don Cornwell, said: "Liverpool is one of the most iconic football clubs in the world with a passionate fanbase and significant global reach. "Dynasty is privileged to support the club and work alongside FSG to execute on the tremendous growth opportunities ahead." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/11555/production/_131279907_hi088171369.jpg

We asked for your views on Sunday's game between Liverpool and West Ham.
Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fansBilly: We now have a sold starting base, even if I've bitten my lip once or twice. Keeping pace with City, who also haven't been 100%. The chasing pack (Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle) have further competitions this year, so they all need to play 110%. Early days, but happy with the effort. Alain: Midfield and attack are in good shape, as expected since the beginning of the season. But let's not mistake it, our defensive line is weak with it's boss at nowhere near the form that helped Liverpool win many trophies. It'll be very difficult with oppositions such as the likes of Man City, Arsenal and Brighton. Paul: Another mixed bag performance from Liverpool. We still keep giving teams multiple chances which need to be addressed. We have to be delighted with three points, after the way the game started. Overall, a decent performance with no real standout players. Great finish from Darwin after the miss but we're missing Trent. Muaz: I love that we finally didn't have to make a comeback. Jota was a superb substitute and, in my eyes, there was not a single player off today. Perfect example of what we can do without Alexander-Arnold. Improvements can be made but overall great performance. West Ham fansBarry: Poor in-game management again by the manager, sadly one of his downfalls. Our changes were made too late. This shows where we are at the moment and we didn't deserve anything out of the game. I still think we will be in the top 10 this year. Tom: Clinical finishing is our downfall. It could have been 3-0 inside 15 minutes if we could tuck away the great chances we create. Stan: For the second week running, we go in at half-time in a strong position against a top side. Both times we lose comfortably. We are not a bad side but we don't believe we can beat the best, and Moyes' record against them is poor. He has no wins in 20 games at Anfield, as superbly as he's done for us. Joe: Not particularly happy with that performance. We started well but wasted some golden opportunities early on and then we were under pressure for most of the game. The scoreline could've easily got embarrassing. Moyes has built a good team but still needs to use his substitutes sooner.

Liverpool statement a 'mistake' - Gary Neville..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/d2ff/live/d9377e80-60f9-11ee-8feb-1f7179b2c49b.jpgFormer Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville has called Liverpool's statement in response to refereeing body, the PGMOL, a "mistake". The PGMOL released their own statement admitting that the decision to disallow Liverpool winger Luis Diaz's goal for offside during Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Tottenham was wrong - citing "significant human error". Liverpool responded by saying "sporting integrity has been undermined" by the decision and the club will "explore the range of options available given the clear need for escalation and resolution". Now writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, Neville said: "Jurgen Klopp handled the situation well last night after the game. Most football fans will have had empathy with what happened and recognised it was wrong! "However Liverpool's statement tonight is a mistake! Talk of exploring all options (what does that mean!) and sporting integrity are dangerous phrases along with being vague and aggressive. "Sorry should be respected and not undervalued. This is a snap reaction that can always be wrong but I feel strongly about it."

AND WHY NOT ?...SET A PRECIDENT.
Liverpool ’s controversial defeat to Tottenham has led to calls for the match to be replayed but it would be an unprecedented decision from the Premier League.
The Reds were left furious with Luis Diaz ’s disallowed goal in North London. The PGMOL have offered an apology for the “human error” that saw the Colombian’s goal struck off, but that has not satisfied the Merseysiders.
Liverpool have threatened to take the PGMOL to task and confirmed their intent to “explore the range of options available” and there are calls for a rematch to take place. It would be a first for the Premier League but one famous FA Cup match was wiped from history and replayed.
Back in February 1999, Arsenal clashed with second-tier Sheffield United in the fifth round of the FA Cup. Patrick Vieira and Marcelo had both scored to leave the clash finely poised at 1-1.
Things very quickly turned sour though after Sheffield United stopper Alan Kelly had kicked the ball out of play so that his teammate Lee Morris could receive treatment for an injury. Understandably, the Blades were under the impression that they were sportingly going to be given the ball back.
Ray Parlour attempted to do just that but Gunners debutant Nw**kwo Kanu had other ideas. He intercepted the throw-in, raced towards goal and squared for Marc Overmars to score into an unguarded net.
“I just remember seeing the throw going down the line and then suddenly Kanu was latching onto it and rolling it across for Marc,” revealed former Arsenal star Nigel Winterburn to Goal. “It was just a complete misunderstanding of the etiquette and what usually happened in the English game because it was clear what Ray was trying to do.
“There was a lot of confusion and angry players around. Sheffield United were furious and that was understandable because everyone knew an injustice had taken place.
“I spoke to a couple of their players and could only apologise. I mean, what can you do after a moment like that? It was pandemonium, I don’t think any of us really knew what to do.”
The goal triggered a furious reaction from then Blades boss Steve Bruce, the players and the fans tucked into the away end. Chants of ‘shame on Arsenal’ rained down until the final whistle - as the Gunners secured a 2-1 victory.
Iconic former boss Arsene Wenger was not thrilled with the win and expressed his intent for a replay during his post-match interview. The Frenchman said: “The second goal is a controversial goal and we feel that it is not right. We have the feeling that we didn't win the game like we want to win our games.”
That decision got the thumbs up from both dressing rooms. “It became apparent quite quickly that we had made the offer,” Winterburn added. “I was pleased because I didn’t want to win a game like that.”
“Arsene did it straight away,” former Sheffield United captain David Holdsworth said. “It was immediate. He was absolute class.” The Football Association granted the Gunners’ request for a replay ten days later and Arsenal again, and this time fairly, won 2-1. Overmars scored once more, with Dennis Bergkamp also finding the net.
Liverpool will certainly hope that Tottenham are as accommodating as their North London neighbours should the prospect of a replay be suggested once more. Whether they manage to turn around their 2-1 defeat though, remains to be seen.

Liverpool are keen on Brazil Under-20s centre-back Lucas Beraldo and have sent scouts to watch the 19-year-old play for Sao Paulo a number of times. Meanwhile, West Ham are in talks with 26-year-old England winger Jarrod Bowen over a new deal amid interest from Liverpool.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7133/live/e33d3d30-61cf-11ee-bf62-3360c46602f9.jpgLiverpool are "exploring" their options following an incorrect VAR decision which saw Luis Diaz's goal ruled out in their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The decision has certainly caused a lot of controversy, with some supporters even calling for the game to be replayed. So we asked you to tell us what you think should happen now.
Here are some of your thoughts:Paul: I hated the Tottenham game and the referee was definitely a rival supporter. After the bookings and the goal that never was but actually was, the referee wouldn’t even let us play on after Szoboszlai was fouled, had gotten up, and Endo was on the attack. I would say they should just add the goal on now, so the score is 2-2. Andy: The game should be replayed. No other possible outcome for this debacle. If it's not replayed and Liverpool miss out on the Champions League by a point, for instance, will they be able to claim millions from the FA and refereeing bodies? Steve: Over the course of a season every team benefits from an incorrect decision and, conversely, every team is unjustly penalized. This season and most other seasons, we see it play out week in week out. Bottom line is it all evens out in the end. No replay. Liverpool, no more or less than others, have benefited from incorrect decisions. Maz: The game should definitely be replayed. This is the second time Spurs have won this season through a VAR wrong decision. Spurs should offer to replay the match but they won't because they won't want to risk losing three points they shouldn't have. Alan: This was such a clear and obvious error that it must be rectified to a just and equitable result. Clearly the game cannot be replayed as that would cause all sorts of issues with fixture congestion and player fatigue etc. However, four goals were scored and that would've resulted in a 2-2 draw, which would be a fairer result for both sides.
